- Lately I've been noticing a lot of people in the forums and chat groups getting into 2018 - 2021 used LC 500's. I thought I'd help some of you out by making this video and letting you know of certain main issues to look out for when going through your due diligence prior to your purchase. Of course, there are many other long term owners who've experienced various other issues, but I wanted to point out the main ones - at least to get your bases covered. So, I hope this video is helpful to some of you, and let me know if you have any other questions in the comments below.
Chapters:
0:00 - Introduction
0:40 - Issue #1: Fuel pump recall
2:32 - Issue #2: Rattling in the interior
4:38 - Issue #3: Brake squeak and dust
6:57 - Bonus issues (my personal experience)
8:30 - Conclusion

All in all, those are relatively minor issues. I'm definitely picking one up used in the future.
U definitely should! Try and test drive one before tho!
Not if you're not close to an accomodating Lexus dealer or on that is a stickler for warranty expiration times. This is a pretty exclusive cars so replacement parts won't be floating around at discount prices. Brilliant car nonetheless and awesome video.
@@kevinbrown7966 to a certain point you're right. Not only would parts be an issue to find, but they can also be expensive. Some of the parts in the LC are shared, but many others are bespoke to the model, so they can get costly.
Me too
Compared to what many people suffer with on their German competitors it’s IMHO ridiculously flawless…
If these are the only problems you have, then you're miles ahead of the competition as far as reliability is concerned.
I'm not complaining, and I'm well aware that they're not as bad as others. I'm trying to educate others on the issues I've had, in case they're looking to get into an LC.

I think Lexus really takes care of their customers. I have heard they were replacing dashboards of I believe the LS sedans that were over 15-20 years old because they became deteriorated and “sticky”. I feel like they take care of issues out of the standard warranty and take customer complaints seriously. Awesome machine. I had an RC 350 and I really love the LC.
Agreed, I heard the same. Which supports the reasoning behind Lexus' rankings in customer loyalty and reliability (even though they recently dropped in the JD Power loyalty rankings - wonder why).

Correct. I got a new dash in both a 4Runner and a GX470 when they were both very old.

I periodically kick myself for not buying one before the pandemic. Such a world class beauty of a car!! Thanks for the heads up on the three issues you outlined. I was only aware of two of them. Cheers!
It looks like they're slightly coming down in price again, like all other vehicles. Glad you got something out of this video 👍
I was trying to purchase one during that time also. It was at a no haggle Lexus dealership. They would not lower the price. I walked away from the overpriced deal.
@@snakedog77 what was the price they were asking ?
In was a dealership in Sacramento California. I do not remember the price. They would not bulge on the price. When they finally reduced the price, it sold. Not a fan of no haggle dealership.
theyre back to normal prices now
It’s seems like Lexus takes accountability and really looks out and takes care of their customers, something you don’t see with most manufacturers. Hopefully I can get one in the next few yrs or so.
Lexus makes the ownership experience very pleasant. Most Lexus dealers honor the Lexus mentality of customers first. My family and I have been Lexus customers since 1989 (when they came out with the LS400). Been a happy customer since then!
I had a 2004 GS300 for a year and since then have driven a BMW and Mercedes. Lexus dealership and maintenance experience is so much better it's not even close. I plan to get an LC 500 in a year once my E43's warranty runs out.
Great info and looks stunning! 👌
Thank you! Cheers!
I love your LC. Ive had my eye on them for a while now. If i ever sell my RC F i will probably get an LC. Thank you for the info!

Helpful vid. Another big one I would mention is the valley plate leak that this engine is known for. Common issue in RCFs GSF and ISFs. Easily fixable though
Yeah I don't disagree, i read about it on the forums. But I didn't experience that and not sure how many LC owners (if any) actually had that....

I've looked at probably 15 LC500 service records and never noted a fuel pump replacement? But I have noticed brake works. I also noticed new tire sets between low miles and wondered why? Overall so far very few services have had to be performed other than normal stuff. My opinion based on these reviews is this is a high-quality vehicle!
Generally it is a high quality vehicle. The premature tire wear wasn't an issue with me, but I have seen other owners complain about inner tire wear. Look at this video I did on mine:

Hi Rich,
Add the Airconditioner/heater Servos to the list of things to check. Mine did not have this problem when I first bought it, but after it went over 45,000 miles the aircon was not being diverted to our face, just able to get it up to defrost and feet. NO Light will light up for this. Your first hint is that when you put A/C to your face and it does not come out, but when you put it to defrost it blows just fine. Putting the code scanner on the car came up with 4 different codes. I got DTC stored errors for 4 of the A/C servos not doing what they are supposed to. (no light, but they were stored-B144x) They were not allowing the air to come out in different places (feet, face, defrost windshield, passenger/driver) or the cool/hot air diverter stops working. There is TSB for this (Lexus TSB L-SB-0009-22 HVAC Servo Motor Malfunction) which they will troubleshoot and replace if necessary if still under warranty and your VIN# is early enough. I ran into the problem that although we were under the warranty's 48,000 mile limit, we were over the 48 month limit for the warranty to cover these. There are at least 5 of them (I think...don't quote me on it) and they run about $260 a piece. Not too bad priced, but the cost to replace them will be charged at 8.0 to 9.0 in labor depending which one they have to dig out from under the dashboard... very buried, not fun to get out and replace.
I also had the brake disk clicking noise during slow turning in parking lots issue. This is a 2-piece rotor thing that occurs in other vehicles with 2-piece rotors, not just Lexus. I was able to fix that issue on my own.
There are 49 PIDs of information for a scan tool to diagnose AND with almost everything on these cars being done by electronics, I highly recommend you find someone with a good code scanner to put on the OBD II port prior to purchase if the seller will allow it.
Overall I love my LC and would not trade it for the world. I'm still thinking of getting me a GSF to add to the family too. Not so convinced about the IS 500 yet as I like the body shape and size of the GS-F over the IS-500. Take care Rich, keep the good videos coming.
Thank you so much for all that detailed information. This will definitely be useful to others when purchasing a used one to make sure and check on these issues as well. 👍
Wow this is the best lc500 I think I have laid my eyes on! A little bias because I enjoy the blue and gunmetal wheel combo (my boosted 86 is the same color combo). Such a beautiful looking car! I hope to buy one in the near future and have it serve as a replacement to my daily ls400.

I definitely think you should! Amazing car. Doesn't have the power that most of its competitors have (BMW M850i, Aston DB11, etc.), but the fit, finish, quality, design and sound are absolutely incredible
Great car. Love the way you customized yours. I have a couple of your music vids in my playlist. Was that dark blue a color option that particular year or did you get it painted? The faint condensation marks inside the brake lights is also a common issue in the headlights of the new ES.
Thanks!👍 The blue color isn't a limited color, it's been available since year 1 of the LC. It's called Nightfall Mica.
Condensation on the headlights should get covered under warranty IMO.
@@RichWithCars It's a rare color.I never saw that color in person here in Houston. The seats in that year LC also look better than current models.I thought about replacing the lights, but it's only noticeable if you really look for it. It's not too bad. Thanks !

Glad it was helpful!
It's a great car and a dream car. Looks like these are all minor issues that the deal dealt with. All cars in their first few years have some sort of issue but nothing major, especially engine wise, Well done. Lexus
Yeah, nothing major for sure - especially considering this was the 1st year of a 1st gen model....
Great advice! I am considering buying new or used.
If you're not interested in updated tech, then definitely go for a used - it'll save you a few extra bucks. The 24's have an updated infotainment system, and safety features, to name a few....
Dear Richard, your modifications regarding the Bodykit are very nice. I would like to copy the exterior. Can you recommend where and how to get exactly this one and mounted?
Thank you Ralph. It really depends where you live. But I'd recommend taking it to a reputable aftermarket body shop that has experience with installing body kits and that you can trust. Best of luck!
Awesome color!
Yes, unfortunately it's been discontinued as of 2024 model year

I'm also poor but I WILL buy one of these in the future 😎 maybe the best looking car Toyota/Lexus has ever made
In due time....yes I agree - LC has to be among the top 3 from Lexus, alongside the SC, and LFA ....
Also look at the Lotus Emira for about the same price.
@@davepaturno4290 that's very true. A friend of mine who also owns a modified LC, is selling his LC500 to replace it with an Emira.
@@RichWithCars The Emira's Toyota engine and transmission should be bulletproof but the only unknown is the electronics. I'm waiting to see how that goes, but the LC is still in the running.
@@davepaturno4290 ya I'd recommend to stay away from launch year Lotus, despite the fact that they're using the V6 Toyota engine on one of the variants. So many other components that could go wrong - as you said, electronics. They're introducing a new infotainment system - 🤔
IMO the best looking car made at any price .
Can't say I disagree....
This is the exact color and setup I’d do if I had a LC500.
You should consider it!
I’m currently undergoing the issue with the door handle. Also a clung noise emanating behind the driver side rear. Gas pump was issued as a recall and as you mention with the brakes I also opted to have the noise over less breaking power. Now that you mention the strut replacement it might be that. Dealer is investigation but they also mention there’s a B pillar issue with a welded nut. Mine been in for a few weeks now. Hopefully they can fix it.
First time I hear of the B-pillar issue. Please keep us posted on your findings and best of luck with the repairs!
Good luck keep us posted!!!
The clunk noise is the brace that goes attached to the b pillar. It goes across from one side to the other. Nightmare, I was one of the first people to complaint and ended up with no car for 6 months. We finally concluded to make 3 1/4inch holes and weld the plates together. Noise went away for some month but it came back. So don’t do that. Waste of money and time. Now I took the car apart myself and torque it to 20nm, did it on both sides. Two months in, no more clunk noise.
I have a 2019 with a glass roof and noticed some small bubbling under the front edge of the glass. Lexus called it "delamination" and replaced the entire roof under warranty.
Did they replace the glass portion of the roof? That's a first that I hear of. Glad they fixed it for u
@@RichWithCars yep, the entire top assembly. Seems like they had to take out the interior headliner to replace it, had some rattling after that, but fixed it by making sure all the clips where popped back in.
beautiful car man
Thank you👍🙏
Yo that car is SICK BRO
Thanks man🙏
Watch the throttle body on the 2UR-GSE. I've had issues on my RCF and I know others have had problems with them. Mine has thrown CEL and gone into limp mode twice. Lexus recommended I replace it, however on inspection I found there was a lot of sticky oil at the back of the butterfly (likely due to the oil breather pipes fed into the intake) which lined up with the error code of it sticking open and a rough idle error. I've cleaned it well and so far so good. I'd recommend pulling out the air intake and giving it a clean at least once a year. It's an easy job to do at home.
Thanks for the heads up! I'll def keep an eye out...
rims are sick... very niceeee

Hi, Great video. I have a 2018 Lc500, brought it new, way back. Love the car, and Lexus, but, It eats tires. The fronts wear heavily on the inside. Had the car aligned serveral times, but no help. do you have the same problem ? Do you know a solution ? Thanks David Z
Hey David, thanks for watching. I had the exact same issue on mine - but I originally thought it had to do with the fact that I lowered my car. The more I read, the more I see that this is a common issue with the LC. You can watch a video I made on this in the link below:
ua-cam.com/video/jPkc0hojDHo/v-deo.htmlsi=u8WN7dqWCX-nYLWT
Some people have mentioned that this is caused by the weak LCA bushings. This can be replaced in order to counter this issue. I haven't tried that yet. I believe RR Racing offers stronger LCA bushings....
Thank you sir for your information and you have a beautiful lc 500 and I'll be picking up mine by summer time. I had a question sir from 2018 to 2021 is there a big difference in the models?
Thank you and much appreciate your support. No major differences between 2018 to 2021 except for the following minor changes:
- suspension tweaks
- transmission tweaks
- in 2021 they added Android Auto integration
- new Yamaha performance damper in the rear axle
No design changes except for different color wheels and some new design wheels for some of the Inspiration Series models....
What wheel and tire options did you get on your Lexus? Do you know if any owners had reported any Mechanical or Electrical issues on the 2022 or new 2023 Lexus Convertible.
You can check out all the modifications on the description of this video: ua-cam.com/video/8Ij9oH4hBfA/v-deo.html

I have an interior rattle on my IS500 but I also have an aftermarket exhaust, but the rattle was there before the exhaust went on. Will Lexus deny warranty coverage because I have a mod like that?
Really depends where it would emanate from. You'd have to take it to the dealer and have them investigate. Once they find the source of the issue, then it would be determined whether it's covered under warranty. Good luck!
Just curious do you think this would be a reliable daily ? Current daily is a 23 RS5 but I also drive 10-12k ish miles a year
Definitely a reliable daily. Might not be as fast as the RS5, but better design (imo), fit and finish and glorious V8 noise.
My LC convertible is a 2021 and have had none of these issues. I see the fuel, pump recall was in ‘19 so prob fixed on mine.
I also have no brake noise of dust. Compared to my Mercedes SL, every day, there was brake dust which I hated so IMO, the Lexus system is much nicer.
No rattles found nor any water in the brake lights but I live in a dry climate.
Absolutely love the exhaust notes on my 5 litre. I have and (have had) many vehicles. Currently have plates on 9 and I have to say, my LC is my fav sports car, backed up being my GX for long drives. Hope this helps.
If you don't mind me asking, what do you do for a living to afford that car?
I'm not saying all LC's will have those issues. Yours is a convertible, which would be a 2021 or newer. Most definitely the fuel pump issue was resolved by then, and they put a different type of brake pad (different compound) which was less aggressive and didn't produce as much dust. Nevertheless, I'm glad you didn't face any of those issues and happy you're enjoying it!

I had the 2018 LC 500. The brakes (#3) was a little issue for me because people would try to embarrass me for having loud brakes on a high end vehicle. Mind you.. they would be walking in a parking lot or in a cross walk talking about what I'm driving.
Ya, u shouldn't care what others say or think about the vehicle u drive. Enjoy it for yourself...
As I mentioned in another comment, Porsche even made a video to show its customers that break squeal is normal....so for performance oriented vehicles, that's normal. For those that bug you about that, they're not car people - they don't know. That's what makes us car enthusiasts!
Plan to buy a LC soon . He’s correct. I’ve owned 2 Porsche cayenne and Macan and they both had strong breaks but were loud and dust everywhere lol
@@RichWithCars Couldn't agree more. IDGAF about what people on the street think about my car. I don't drive for others, I drive for myself!
do you face problems with road bumps? whats your departure/approach angle with that kit?
I face plenty of issues - to the point when sometimes I'll take my other vehicle to avoid having any. I've never measured the angles, but most likely very low, when you're working with 1½ inches of clearance.
Am I imagining things or does the right brake light have condensation again?
It's probably the camera angle or reflection. I'd notice if there was....😉
I may be able to “afford” a used high-end Mercedes, BMW, Audi, or Porsche, but I won’t be able to maintain them. However something like this is affordable and not a maintenance money pit. Thanks for the insight.
U should definitely give it a test drive. U won't be disappointed and shouldn't consider it as a secondary option compared to the Germans.
My 2020 LC had that door handle issue. It was stuck in for a few weeks and then stuck out for a few weeks. But it started working properly again and i havent had another issue in 6 months.
Thank God! Is your LC still under warranty? If so, I'd take it to the dealer and have them take a look. If not, then pray it doesn't malfunction, cuz the part alone is about $1800!

family member got a New S500 Merc, had to take it back a few times too. 1 was the brakes squealed so bad, 2. was having to get different tires to cope with the weight . Not bad for a $300k car. a friend also had a fuel tank issue with his Lexus. he could hear the petrol swishing every time he moved, they fix it buy having sheets in between the tank wall. design fault they don't tell u about until you complain.

Hard pads for high performance cars normally cause the squealing and need more pressure to grip.Soft pads are very grippy but wear out sooner. You can't have both. Same goes with tyres. This contradicts what I've read.
Appreciate your video! Any experience with issues of Overheating of Oil or Trans during the sustained high loads of canyon runs (or the rare track session)?
I was very disappointed to learn that this car has No Oil Nor Trans Coolers :(
I've never experienced trans overheating, but I've come across a few owners who have after hard track driving. I've had my oil Temps go up quite a bit during spirited backroads driving and some track driving (not with my car) after 20 minutes. Didn't get the warning light come on, as I slowed down to allow for cool down. Unfortunately this isn't a full blown F car, hence the lack of coolers.😔
@@RichWithCars Thanks for the input!
It def does Not have to be full blown F car to have some simple Coolers, at least an Oil Cooler! Lesser caliber vehicles have both.

That's amazing honestly prob wouldn't have as little problems with z4, 4 series or a bmw even if it's good and maintained
I love convertibles and I'm gonna keep reading and looking into it but I think even though extremely pricey
This is the best convertible and the price is ok
If I take care of it maintain it and it holds its value and like I said seems to be worth every cent
@samsonnazarite8673 the LC is absolutely a well built car. Check out my other couple UA-cam reviews on my F90 M5. It has way more issues, which I'm still dealing with. If you can find an LC like mine, we'll kept and maintained, then pull the trigger - you won't regret it.
That is a bad ass Lexus 💪
🙏👍
Why dont i see that retractable wing on any of the lc500s online for sale. Im trying to purchase and don't see that trim...
It's not very common. Those are the ones with the Performance Package.
@@RichWithCarsIs that the only difference?
@TheHitman- no. In the US, Performance Pack has the following:
- CF Roof
- Deployable rear wing
- Torsen LSD
- CF door sills
- Rear wheel steer
- Performance sport seats in alcantara and leather
@RichWithCars Thank you brother. Can I buy yours? 😂
@@TheHitman- shoot me an email. You know mine is modified. But it's babied, garage kept, personally washed every 2 weeks, etc. RichAndCars@gmail.com
I'd be interested to know more about your rear shock. I've got a fairly quiet click/knock noise upon acceleration and deceleration that the dealer has acknowledged but unable to find. My ears would suggest it is the top of the strut on the drivers side (UK) and it's driving me nuts!
It could be the strut - but it could also be a chassis flex. Mine and a few other owners have noticed this chassis flex issue that causes a click/creaking when going on uneven surfaces or with fast accel/deceleration. Nothing wrong with the chassis, but would need some adjustment on the braces
@@RichWithCars Many thanks Rich and I'll make this known to my dealer when it goes back in for a service.
I’ve had all of these issues. And I’ve had air conditioner servo failures twice.
Man that sux.... sorry to hear.
What was it???
Nice car!
Thanks 🙏
every lexus that i have owned had some sort of brake squeak or brake dust issue my IS300, ISF, and now my IS500 even with “proper” maintenance
I have that issue - has to do with the metallic compound in the brake pads.
Does it have water pump internal seal issues?
No nothing like that....only type of issue was a low fuel pump recall, which I never had an actual issue with - just a precautionary measure
Rich, which model year is your car?
2018
I ordered my 22 coupe Oct of 21 only to get it May of 22. IR, TC, with DHP and all the goodies. The car came with a popping sound over broken pavement from the center dash speaker. Resolved. The sound of a plastic bag caught outside your door on both sides. They adjusted the pitch of both door glass. Resolved. Now to my current: Rear center speaker distortion on many songs even "chill" songs played at 26 and up. They ordered a new sub yet to be here and get installed. Now i hear a rattling and popping from the passenger door on various road services which is driving me NUTS. They are going to have to look at that. And finally the COUP DE GRACE ( I know i said that wrong) 🤪 the black plastic housing which surrounds the rearview mirror to the front windshield is buzzing over pavement which is NOT close to either of my dealers. Meaning I've brought it to their attention every time and they simply don't have the surfaces to test. I told them to put felt in there or something anyway. Still nothing. I think an extended ride might be in the cards with the tech. So yea its my favorite object but still flawed.
Wow that's a long list of flaws! Sorry you had to go thru that since the beginning. Frankly, I only started having some of my issues about 1 yr ½ into my ownership. At least they're doing their best to help and resolve your issues. Unfortunately, it seems that you're far from any dealer, which makes things a little more frustrating. In my case, my dealer is about 15 minutes from my house....best of luck on the pending items!
@@RichWithCars Thanks. All that said I still adore the car.
I’m actually surprised to hear about that many of those types of issues with the LC. It seems out of character for Lexus. That said, I read the same things about brand new 911s and others. I have a 5 year old 4Runner that’s tight as a drum. Rattles are certainly not uncommon, but you definitely seem to have drawn the extra short on that one. Let’s be honest, those r the types of issues that do drive most of us nuts so I feel for ya. Hopefully everything was sorted to your satisfaction.
What size are your wheels?
They're 21's. You can see a list of all the mods in the description of the video below:
