  • A few weeks back we did a livestream as we wrenched on our WJ - we replaced the waterpump. Today we finally have the editing done and are posting the edited version that shows the job with more camera angles!
    So these are all the details to replace the waterpump. Like usual, our videos are longer than most, but we show alot of detail and talk about alot of things. Hope you enjoy!
    You can also checkout the livestream that is saved on our channel, if you want to see how that went and see behind the scenes stuff as we did this filming.

    Dealer wanted ~$600 for this job. Thanks to you and your video I was able to knock it out myself ($60) and I have never worked on cars before. Heck I never even took auto class in HS 30 years ago. I don't care how much money I have lying around, I hate paying people to do things I can do myself. Extra bonus is I added a few new tools to my toolbox to complete this job. I did have an issue with it running hot after I got everything put back together. I finally figured out it was because I did not bleed the radiator correctly when I added coolant back in. Rookie mistake, but I could see others doing this as well.

    The belt tensioner mounting bolt should be 30 ft. lb. of torque (page 7-18 of service manual). You mentioned 45 ft. lbs, which is for the pulley to the bracket. Mine was really hard to get off, most likely because others have made the same mistake. Otherwise a great video. Thanks for the attention to detail.

    This video was just what I needed to replace the water pump on our Jeep. I had constant problems with overheating, and I just about replaced everything. The final stop was finding this video and I was able to replace the water pump myself. Also, I could not believe I have been using the wrong Dexcool coolant all this time based on my neighborhood mechanic's recommendations. I dug up the WJ 4.7l user's manual and it clearly stated on using HOAT-compliant coolant. I gave it a flush and replaced it with Zerex G05 coolant. This Jeep has over 200k miles but it runs great now without overheating. Thanks again for the video!

    Thanks to this video i almost tear apart the timing cover of my engine, i thought it was the chain sliders and tensioners that where making the noise, but when you turned the pump pulley it sounded the same as mine does , i just removed the drive belt and turn the engine on and sounds smooth without the pump, so im replacing it as soon as it arrives, will keep the chains and tensioners for a future repair..
    Thanks..

    You set the standard for good UA-cam video. Do list the camera, lights, and audio you used. You did such a nice job in presention alone I am impressed. Certainly the information you record was very good. Since you have all the best tools at hand; with just a little more effort you could have shown how to remove the fan shroud and make it even more easier to work.
    Another suggestion, since I love you and what you to be great, again; try to record clips of jobs that have a value in itself. Like removing the belt by turning the tensioner. Then link small clips of the videos together to do more complex jobs like water pump replacement. Soon you will be able to rebuild the whole engine. Jeep Cherokee is a good baseline model to do this.
    With my high regards.

    Great video, it’s very straight forward and helpful. I need to replace my water pump and I just had one question. For whatever reason the previous owner welded the bleed hole at the highest point shut so I won’t be able to pour coolant in from that point. Is there another way to refill my coolant without needing that hole?

    Great video! Very detailed! Only one thing I would be concerned of , you may have caught all the clean fluid in the drain pan from the rad, but I would then remove that drain pan and put other one underneath there to catch whats coming out when you're removing the water pump bolts and water pump. That fluid that's draining down the motor into the pan would get dirt in it from the exterior part if the motor. And just disturbing those bolts alone would dropped dirt into your clean fluid.

    I just did one today that was 150k miles and pretty much bearing exploded on water pump. I unbolted the three bolts for the AC Compressor with the lines and clutch plug still attached and lifted it straight up to get room for water pump. And for refill I took out bleed plug and filled via radiator till it flowed out of the bleed screw and then reinstalled plug, started up truck with heater on to feed the core and then put the radiator cap back on after it started to warm up.

    Seems
    Awesome video. My WJ went down this weekend and I’m more than positive it’s the water pump. I was able to safely get home. Unfortunately it won’t start at all now. Would a failing water pump cause it to start at all?? Thanks b

    • @VortexGarage
      @VortexGarage  3 роки тому

      What makes you think it's the water pump? Did the Jeep overheat? Other symptoms? I would say that a failing water pump will cause the noise from bad bearings, or perhaps and overheating condition if it leaks badly. In a really bad scenario of water pump failure the impeller can seperate and stop water flow, causing an overheating condition. Bearings could also seize completely and toast the serpentine belt but I've not seen that on the handful of WJ's we've had in the family.
      I don't think a bad water pump would prevent the Jeep from starting. However if it overheated badly, that could cause it due to other issues. I'll caution against letting the 4.7l overheat - I drove mine home (I have a get home no matter what gene!) when the thermostat had failed, and it ran hot for several miles during some stop/go traffic. A month later I was doing head gaskets...iron block and aluminum heads don't like to overheat due to their differing thermal expansion rates. Best of luck with yours, and overheating isn't a guarunteed head gasket issue, but it definitely ups the risk, so I have learned since then to immediately park an overheating 4.7l.

    When you were putting the coolant back in did you put it in the reservoir at the same point you put it in radiator and the high port or did you fill the reservoir after?

    • @VortexGarage
      @VortexGarage  2 роки тому +1

      I add in the top port as in the video. Afterwards check the expansion tank and top off if needed. Usually I find it is at the correct level. It's not quite a reservoir but an expansion tank. As the coolant heats it expands and goes into that tank via the small hose on the top of the radiator. When it cools and contracts it pulls it back in. So really just check it and top off if needed after filling in the small top port in video

    I ran into the problem of having two fans? A high flow fan connected to the water pump, and an electric fan connected to the shroud. This had me take out the radiator to get the water pump and fan off together. Why didn't your model jeep have this fan??

    • @jojo16009

    "The bearings seem to fail every 2 years" - Then why keep buying a cheap pump? I just checked Autozone and their Duralast water pump is $62 (of course their Duralast Gold pump is like $82). You can get a Mopar OEM pump for $94 and I'd bet anything it will last a lot longer than the Duralast will.

    • @051biohaz

      Yeah, but the duralast has a lifetime replacement, so you’ll never buy another one

    • @jw11432
      @jw11432 3 роки тому

      @@051biohaz But is that worth having to tear into the engine and perform the job every 2 years, to save 30 bucks? I'd rather do it once and not have to worry about it, likely for the remainder of its life. My WJ has its (presumably) original water pump and it has 148k miles. That's a damn good amount of time, and it doesn't appear to be letting up, but since I'm about to do a preventative overhaul, I'll go ahead and replace it, but I'm actually going with a Melling. BTW, you should buy your car parts from RockAuto.com if you can, their prices are insanely good. I'll never go to Autozone/Oreillys again if I don't have to, their markup is crazy.

    does a bad water pump cause the engine to over heat?

    • @VortexGarage
      @VortexGarage  3 роки тому +1

      Usually a bad water pump will make bearing noise, or leak coolant. In some cases leaking can cause low coolant and overheating, or in more rare cases the impeller will fail causing overheating. On a WJ, the thermostat is a common cause for overheating. Either way would require some diagnosis to be certain as there can be several things that can be the root cause for overheating.

    • @VortexGarage
      @VortexGarage  2 роки тому +1

      I have never heard of a Jeep or Dodge 4.7l calling for Dexcool. While Dexcool is primarily a GM coolant, I do know that recent Fords use a coolant that is basically a Dexcool standard. It's possible that later Mopars have similar? But every WJ I'm aware of called for HOAT compliant coolant, not Dexcool.
      Zerex G-05 is what I've used each time I've done a WJ 4.7l water pump.
      JeepForum.com is a great place to also go post and see if anyone else has come across this, but again, I've not seen that personally.
