I bought a 2001 WJ 4.7 2WD about 7 years ago with only 62000 miles on it. It's in very good condition. After I owned it for about a year the engine dropped a valve seat. I immediately shut the engine off when I heard the clattering and felt the engine miss fire. Fortunately it didn't do any damage to the engine, in fact the machine shop was able to reuse the exhaust valve to my surprise. But pulling those heads off with the engine still in the vehicle was a pain!! Still own it today and runs great! And I forgot to mention that it came with the factory tow package which comes with a limited slip differential with 3:73 gearing. So this thing pretty fast off the line.
@@brynnond.6952 From what I seen on a website that talks about WJ"s, the ones without the tow package came with a 3.55 ratio. Not sure how reliable the website was though.
@@TheHawaiiantiger my 4.7 is a 2002 model, non tow package, and has a Dana 44A with 3.73 gearing, only thing I’ve noticed between models with and without is the cooling system for the transmission is different / has a bigger transmission cooler, and that’s instead of 80w-90 conventional in the rear, manual calls for 75w-140 full synthetic, but I have only looked at a handful of 4.7 wj’s so a 3.55 could be possible since the rear diff if 100% swappable +\- some drive shaft sizing options with the u-joints.
About to put 4.0 with manual in my wj. The 4.7 seized around 330k. Hoping to use ecm and wiring from a wrangler. Have clutch parts for it. I reused a bread tie in fuel injector clips because I broke a couple lock tabs. My block seized so I tore it down to the block to autopsy it. Removed bumper too. I pulled mine with trans also.
Where did you mount the chains on to, to lift the motor? Also, there's a wiring harness that runs through the back side of the valve cover by the breather connection on the passenger side, its a thick harness, is this harness bolted onto the engine or the chassis?
There are two threaded holes where long bolts can go (might already be there) and you can hook to those. That harness is not connected to the body...I don't remember if it was bolted to engine or not, either way, not connected to body in my case
Thanks for good info I have 02 jeep grand Cherokee trying to do same engine swap Now I have to figure out what motor year 4.7 motor is interchange with my jeep. Any information will help Thanks again
Thanks for watching! From what I understand (not a mechanic) any 99-04 engine from a jeep will fit. It's going from dodge to jeep that I guess sometimes creates problems. That is what I understand anyway
I've done it both ways and I've struggled to line everything up both ways. Next time I do it I'll just flip a coin lol. I don't think either way is faster than the other
4.7 is a real pain in the ass to work on. Wish mine had a 5.9 magnum. Should’ve been an option for the wj’s. Love my wj though, it’s an off road beast.
I have the lift, removal was easy. With moving camera and all that it took my probably 8 hours total. Putting it back together is what took a couple of days
I have a 08 3.7 GC with 270,000 miles. The only problem is that she is oil thirsty….probably 1 qt every 800 miles. I might be close to having to replace the engine…
Same exact thing. Intake slightly different but bolt pattern is same. Then there are two more wires for the knock sensors on top of engine valley. So yeah, no different at all. I've done both. Plus I've put an ho in my non ho
Good day. I am from Sierra Leone. I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ of the same age. It cranked but did not start. The timing was reset and it can now start. But the problem now is, when the engine is running and engages gear R or D it stalls. Can you advice what is the problem?
@@AGuyandHisProjects I'm on my 9th WJ and have always taken care of them and fixed them and made them better. NEVER changed an engine and I do not plan to. I'm glad yours went fairly smooth.
I've done it oth ways now. I think they were equally involved. Best part for me about removing grill was not having to lean on the grill. Other than that, not sure it makes a big difference personally
I ended up getting it pretty much all fixed up then sold it. That's typically what I do. Buy them as crap, make them less crappy, and sell them to buy another
He says, "I'm not a mechanic". Then he shows us removing an engine. Seems to me he's more than a paper pusher.. My concern would be missing something when putting it back together and having to tow it to a shop to get it fixed. I test drove a 2008 Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 engine, 105,000 miles. That thing was fast. I looked up the specs and learned the 2008 with 4.7 is faster than the hemi with 5.7 liters. It appears the 4.7 makes more torque below 3500 rpms. According to several car road tests, It did 0-60 in 6.6 seconds when new. I can't figure out if ALL 2008 have the HO equipment, but the HO has 30 more HP than the standard 4.7L.
Thanks! Yep, very easy to forget something for sure! Once you have your hands all over ut though it is fairly easy to figure out where you went wrong...most of the time anyway haha

A worthy endeavor! I've got 266k plus and three engines. One was a factory recall in 07. My 01 just got a new engine and brother that was not cheap
I've been looking at new engines, yeah, hard to justify those haha
It was less than a new Grand Cherokee! Feel me?
Haha, yes, yes I do
Should mention that you have to remove the starter to removebthe two forward facing bellhousing bolts

I keep the wj around for winter, thing goes wherever I want it to (reasonably) on the snow/ice. Plus it's a fun little thing to drive around
