“Your brand is not what you make. It’s how you make people feel while they watch what you make.” As a visual artist, this is PERFECTION.

This is the first vid ive seen from brett and this sentence alone made me subscribe for more
@@puranen I would go down the rabbit hole and dive in to the content man, there is so much to learn
As a designer in the games industry, we use this as the number one ‘lens’ when looking at our work. What experience are we trying to make? What should the player feel? Folk lose sight of that when creating often, they establish a paradigm by which they succeed and then they just repeat it over and over without thinking on the goals, and eventually the world moves on.
Yea that quote is spot on and honestly very transferable to how you interact with people in everyday life.
In a world of negativity, the sports creators on UA-cam bring so much joy and good energy that it becomes infectious. Plus as Brett said, you don't get tape breakdown like this anywhere else. This is the future
No doubt, what a great comment.
So true. There are rare exceptions where you get good tactical analysis or insider insight on TV, but you notice it because it's the exception. By and large broadcast and cable sports media has become a race to the bottom, and for the good stuff you need to seek out independent producers.
This is only the future for white guys that like being smarks and feel like they're being educated by watching UA-cam videos
UA-cam just allows so much more information and conversation about the sports topics that people actually care about. ESPN stops caring about the NFL draft about halfway into round 3 while I’m watching guys break down the film for tight ends drafted in the fifth round that could be a hidden gem. Meanwhile ESPN will be having the same Lebron vs Jordan debate day in and day out and making a mountain of one player’s tweet to leverage a new contract the night before. Ironically, it’s the small guys that I go to that don’t resort to the clickbait headlines
@@colten53 see, this guy right here. He convinces himself he knows anything, but he's completely clueless about how clueless he is
Why I don't watch ESPN: They'd rather pay people who yell than people who make me think.
Why I watch UA-cam: I'd rather watch people who make me think than people who yell.
Simple concept.
Let's also not forget the fa t that a lot of the "news" or opinions aired are influenced by agents.
..you forgot to mention their crocodile tears
Acting like UA-cam is some paragon of unvarnished truth telling and objectivity is absolutely hilarious to me, when a massive source of medical misinformation during the pandemic came directly from sports media figures on UA-cam. Not to mention it being a dogshit opinion factory in general.
I think the negativity and toxicity part is such a HUGE part of why people are flocking to new media. Being a fan is already a negative enough experience, between poorly run orgs, greedy ownership, and the failure machine that can be sports... I need more good vibes. I need that thing that hearkens back to the fun that got me hooked on sports in the first place.
When Pat opened the ESPY's i expected him to say, "ESPN fired the guy that was supposed to host this and since they gave me so much money they said I have to do it."
Why?? He sold out. He will be sucking disney off now
That would have been the best opening ever lol
@@Bliu2thAnd probably have been some kind of contract violation

Also: NFL live has that "feel good while watching" vibe, and that's mostly why it's doing good
NFL Fantasy Live and the ESPN Fantasy Football Now before Sunday Football is always how I prepared for Fantasy over the last two seasons. Both seasons I've won my very serious league! Great programs with pretty good opinions as well!
I miss the days where corporations could FAIL. Could die, could get replaced by people with better ideas. But now disney and in general huge corporations are so big they're just 10-15 years behind everything but they'll buy their way back up once they get their head out of their ass. Brett you're amazing I hope we get to keep you forever :)
Good point. The bailout was bullshit. And yes, they are soooo Big now they can do anything, and survive. Look at budlight.
Yup, big businesses are not allowed to fail
They privatize the profits, and then socialize the losses so we pay for it.
I blame Jews
Without getting too political. There's always a lot of anti-socialism posts on certain websites... but the mega rich corpos get socialism, while the little guys and normal people get capitalism. If my business fails, it fails. I don't get a bailout or some parachute package lol. 2008 set a precedent that corps could be "too big to fail" (there's a literal movie named that).
@@atkascha Capitalism vs socialism argument is irrelevant at this point...
This was so beyond informative, it was inspiring. Thank you Brett.
Now heres a guy ESPN should be reaching out to
Its headline clippings and Twitter screenshots. A monkey could do this
The one other network show that I really enjoy is the Rich Eisen Show, there's just something about his personality that I really gravitate to. He's really well-spoken, very professional, and just straight-up loves the sport of football, and you can feel that passion every time he speaks
He can still do one hell of a sprint as well.🏃
Rich eisen talks with the confidence of Cowherd but with the vocal cadence of Ernie Johnson and I appreciate that
He's also a kind-hearted soul and gives a shit
It's the authenticity. Rich, Brett, Grossi, Perna, McAfee, etc, all of them have a legitimate relationship with their audiences that makes you feel like you truly *know* them, and it's not just some talking head that the network decided on.
@@patrickcorcoran4377 Not to mention you can literally interact with them, whether it be through social media, YT live chats, Discord, etc.
Had no idea about your previous career endeavors. Makes sense as to why your content is so top notch. Impressive stuff dude.
Brett’s shared some cool nuggets from his NFL Network days throughout the years. Really cool stuff
Another thing I'd say is, as a UK fan of the NFL and Rams, UA-cam content is a lot easier to access anywhere in the world. Add to that, that content like yours dives in deep but explains things well so even someone like me can understand, which happens less on the traditional channels. People like you, Tom Grossi, That's good sports, Around the NFL, Jourdan Rodrigue with the Athletic Jake Ellenbogen, you all keep me going.
Exactly. Bronco fan in the U.K. since 1980s my knowledge of the game has increased without going bankrupt! The thing is it going to be better for the NFL expanding their audience outside the States too.
Dude the rams don’t even have fans in the states, didn’t think they’d have overseas fans 😂

I used to LOVE ESPN back before the Kellerman/Smith/Bayless era.

For people who actually love sports, you guys gave us what we needed
I stopped watching after Kellerman left First Take.
It used to be good sports journalism with some fun. Now, it's a ball of anger about something with light journalism.

I lack the words to truly express my love and appreciation for you and the work you have done over these years, so I will say that and thank you.
I started watching your content when I was 15. I've loved watching you grow and witnessing your career has been remarkably enlightening to me. Thank you so much for your work and your perspective on this matter. Back when I first saw your Amari Cooper vs Jalen Collins video, I was a 10th grader looking for a way to blow off his Journalism class (and began writing about football for every article, despite being in the Middle East where no one cared lmao) and now I'm graduated, having written two honors research papers on football and am applying to law school this fall. Thank you so much for your content for nerds. It's really helped me out in life
I’m so happy to hear that and I’m really proud that you’ve been able to do all that!

Forreal man nice work, best of luck w law school and future endeavors, you’ve got good judgment if Brett’s a role model
That's pretty cool man.
I’m a sports media student at the University of Georgia and this video really struck a chord with me. When I first came to college it was my dream to get an on air job in network TV but I’ve really started to get into content creation over the past few months, and have started to turn my focus more towards UA-cam. My school still primarily focuses on training students for network TV, but I’m very interested to see how that evolves as digital content becomes more mainstream. Great video as always!
You're lying. You're a lame white guy that always wanted to get into content creation bc you think its easier. Plus, this will never get more mainstream you simpleton bc it still requires the skills and money from television

Great analysis, loved how you set the stage by discussing your past experience to give validity to your unique position to dissect the topic. I appreciate your giving us this insight where very few people could.
Well handled discussing the plight of those that unfortunately lost their jobs. Hopefully they can pivot and find a just as rewarding career, perhaps by following the trends and building their own brands.
What really got to me was your impeccable self analysis, and sharing with us how you built your brand, doing things that made you uncomfortable but were necessary to differentiate, and the lengths and efforts you put forth to do what you do. It was honest and passionate, and really struck a chord with me, so thank you!

I’m a relatively new NFL fan. Between your channel teaching me technicalities and Secret Base teaching me the history, I now feel in a place where I can really engage with, and enjoy, a sport that always confused me (I was born & raised in England where we play football football 😉)

Completely agree. ESPN is moving towards a new direction because what they have isn't working.
@@Dee007xit’s hard to feel bad for people making millions of dollars
I think the biggest problem they're facing is when I was younger, you'd have to sit through their show in order to see the highlights of the one game you care about or to hear them cover your team for all of 5 minutes. You don't have to do that anymore, simply because the content is on demand, you can find specifically what you're looking for. Not only that, but am I going to pay like 50 bucks a month or w/e it is to get a cable subscription to see them? Nope. The only use they have is as a topic setter for when I'm at a bar with people who like sports.
Wanted to share my appreciation for your dedication and hard work like the rest of us here. I started watching when I was just getting into football shortly after highschool and couldn't begin to describe how much my understanding has grown since then. I keep coming back because it feels like i'm sitting down in a room with a friend and watching film while knocking back drinks.

When UA-cam announced they were buying rights to show NFL games I didn’t see the appeal, but if they allowed creators such at Brett to livestream the games and add personal content to the streams I actually think I’d consider paying. Having genuinely football smart people commenting and explaining the nuances of the game live is something I’ve wanted for a long time
Same... Agreed 100%...
They can’t do that because they don’t produce the games.
Brett, I have to say how much this video made me appreciate the effort you put in to your work. Im glad I stumbled on your channel during Covid. I started taking an interest in football in 2014. But after watching your videos i now really understand playbooks both offensively and defensively. Even helped me in Madden. Never got that from regular TV sports shows.
i respect the grind it’s a tough industry you’re one of my favorite content creators fr
I found Mina Kimes through her podcast before I knew she was on ESPN. I just love her grasp of nuances that usually don't appeal to the lowest common denominator that broadcast television is used to catering to.
That's the advantage of podcasts. Mainstream sports shows just don't have the time to analyze or dive deep into topics. They have 30-60 minutes of coverage with ad breaks every 10 minutes.
She is definitely one of the good ones and I’m not just saying that because she is a Seattle fan 😂
She is good. She just struggles to say a complete sentence when not reading a script.
Kimes is garbage mud shark
The insight into You, your work and how you got here was incredible. Anyone can break down Xs and Os, but only you can tell the story of your own journey. Great stuff, Brett.
I learned a ton about football from this channel and am glad I went to youtube once I realized how much I liked the sport. Thanks for the nerd stuff Brett, didn’t know I needed a calm, winding down type of football content to end the day and it’s very much appreciated
Ok
I’ve already commented on this video like 2-3 minutes in.
I’m so proud of you
You have a fan for life as long as you keep making content and beyond.
You’re doing a wonderful job and the content that you are creating is really beautiful
This is a damn good video that explains everything so eloquently. I don’t watch ESPN anymore except for select personalities for all the reasons you stated. It’s why I watch Pat, it’s why I watch Tom and not SAS screaming. Beautiful video
I'm seeing this vid and the way you described how you explain playbooks (esp. plays) and defenses is exactly why I got interested in those subjects in the first place. You've been able to explain concepts in ways that makes people who are more causal fans get more interested in the game. I remember seeing your first vid about why Carson Wentz was struggling in 2020 and I've been hooked to your channel ever since. Big fan though I miss seeing you prepare a drink in the intro/outro.
As someone going into college this fall on the sports media track, I appreciate the insight
Kollmann, Jomboy, Perna & Jon Bois are on my independent sport media Mt. Rushmore.
The networks still have one trick up their sleeves: insiders. Schefter at ESPN, Glazer at Fox, etc. are still network guys. The independent personalities don't have that angle... yet.
Cant speak to all markets, but as a Packer fan I can tell you the indy guys who cover them are becoming pretty well connected to the team.
@@zacharypatterson423 Shefter's just a puppet for the league office. He reports what they tell him to report. A mouthpiece. Remember, all 32 NFL teams are actually 1 entity. Its all centralized, including what information gets released. They craft narratives just like any mainstream news outlet and they use Shefter to do it. Dont care much about it. Now seeing players go on indy content channels where you get to know the players is worth far more to me. For instance, Aaron Nagler of Cheeseheadtv has had many Packers current and former players on his channel. Tom Grossi (who Brett mentioned and showed multiple screenshots of in this video) has had sit down interviews with the Packers team president Mark Murphy and many others. Absolutely love it. Way better than anything Shefter brings to the table. The indy content creators humanize the game where corporate "insiders" just commercialize and streamline information. Wont miss much.
@@zacharypatterson423yeah except he's wrong over and over and over and you just pretend he's not...
Good point. Yet is the keyword. In other sports, new media has started to become the de facto “insiders.” Prime example: No Laying Up w/ Pro Golf.
One thing fox and CBS have. Is that they don't have to depend on subscribers like ESPN.
Love your channel man. You’ve expanded my knowledge of football 🏈 ten fold. So, thank you for that!
Just discovered you channel. I haven't had cable in years, but if there's something I've missed from ESPN the entire time, it's been the NFL Matchup style breakdowns. You got yourself another sub.
Love the shout-outs to Perna and Grossi, along with tons of other creators I've been getting my sports coverage with you over the years, especially since I got rid of cable some 15 years ago. I hope all of you guys experience success, but my biggest worry is that these monoliths don't understand what made their content deal-breaking in the first place, and will just ruin every creator they sign.
This was a super honest take on the state of sports media. Awesome content and amazing context. Thanks Brett

I’ve really found that podcasts have replaced any tv I would watch, especially for football, it’s a great mix of different takes and X’s and O’s, and the guys on the shows usually get along really well! Loving Athletic Show, Ringer NFL, Stock Exchange and of course Bootleg. The main thing for me is that on those shows the banter is good natured
Bootleg is no doubt a fucking painful schedule for the team, but the content is so good. I’m no scheming expert but its amazing how much I’ve already learned
On demand is much better than a show with a time slot.
Podcasts in audio/YT format has replaced even my sports radio talk cycle even from ages ago. The best part is that there are many guys who want to touch on more peculiar/different subjects within that same sphere.

Really appreciate this video covering the topic from your perspective. I love watching your channel and several others that you’ve listed here on UA-cam exactly because you all provide a very personal and specific brand and outlook on the NFL. Since Netflix first came out with a streaming service I haven’t looked back to traditional cable. I used an antenna for years to try to get NFL games (recently switched to UA-camTV so I can skip commercials or watch from my phone) and the worst part of the game is the mediocre commentary and the commercials in a system from decades past. I would pay a premium to instead to listen to any of you guys and your commentary to the game. One of the smartest things that ESPN has done in the last couple years is the Manning cast which added some fun and perspective the game.
Again great content!
It’s really simple. ESPN has sucked for a decade. They’ve been very open about the fact that they(much like other mainstream media networks Fox/CNN for example) base their entire programming on creating controversy. They also have obvious agendas. I know that every time I turn on ESPN, someone will be yelling at me about Lebron or the Cowboys. It’s boring and annoying at the same time. It’s hard for me to feel super bad for most of these folks. They got the incredible opportunity to make great money to do a dream job. They didn’t do it well enough. Most folks never get the opportunity.
The other part of your brand that I've always appreciated is the focus on education, not just film breakdown.
Those other breakdown channels you mentioned are great, and you can learn a lot watching them. But none of them are likely to do full episodes on the Tampa 2 or outside zone....and those are 2 of the best videos in terms of quality you've ever done.

@16:00 hit the nail on the head with understanding how and why you connect to your audience unlike networks that have been rinse repeating their process the past 20 years
Maybe if Disney and ESPN focused on sports & entertainment, instead of telling us how to think and feel, they wouldn't be in this position
100%. This is a really big factor for why their ratings have been tanking for years now. I said in another comment how i personally would feel insulted when I would see the latest attempt at forcing some political leaning agenda or viewpoint into their sports coverage because it was so obvious to me. Just fucking show me the popular sports and highlights and analysis... dont try and sneak in your ideology.
When they talk about women’s sports, they basically lie about reality. And that is just one example.
Remember when every single nba affiliated person was screaming “get out and vote”!!! But they made it very clear they meant vote democrat. It was just gross if they had been doing the same but for conservatives it would still be gross.
Its not that complicated. Once ESPN got political people tuned out and in todays world there is plenty more options.
As a long time fan and subscriber of the channel, your transparency shown in this video feels genuine and is very endearing and appreciated. You rule Brett, KTO forever
“I don’t want to be at the top of the pyramid, I’m good “down” here”……. You are at the top of YOUR pyramid…🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 great work
Independent news is way better than cable news and sports outlets. Given the politics that have seemed to creep into everything, people can pick what they want.
We don’t want anybody at ESPN to have a job in the media anymore. No Stephan a no Malika Andrews no woke racial nonsense that has nothing to do with sports.
ESPN dragging politics into sports was incredibly cringey, but we shouldn't drag it up always as well, lets be better
Just the way you use woke in a sentence says a lot about you and your own politics.
"Everyone" (that I know and watch) is equally frustrated with Andrews specific behavior. That being said, the "leave politics out of sports" is stupidity personified.
Yes, politics shouldn't be a part of game day coverage, but it is the responsibility of those in the media surrounding sports to be aware and speak up of what goes on inside, outside, and around the business.
Sexual scandals, drugs, abuse, exploitation, raising awareness, etc. It is all free game.

So while there are other Xs and Os focused channels, I've stuck with your brand because of the brand, putting a face to the content and... I often get enjoyment out of something because someone else is enthusiastic about it as well. I care about Miami sports because of The Dan Lebetard Show, for example.
