Great episode Brett! I’d love for you to do a deep dive like this on Inside Zone. Mainly cause my team, the Eagles, are more of an Inside Zone heavy run scheme. They’re undoubtedly the best in the league at it having averaged a crazy 19.99 EPA running it in 2021 while the highest Outside Zone EPA was the Chargers at 6.10. I’d be curious to learn about the advantages it gives you and why the Eagles are so efficient at it. The fact the Eagles can get anywhere from 2-3x the EPA any team running ‘Gods Favorite Run Play’ seems pretty incredible to me. Is it just Philly having better Jimmy’s & Joe’s + arguably the best OL coach (no disrespect to Callahan) in the NFL? Does Outside Zone just lead to more negative EPA plays than Inside Zone due to it being more of a horizontal play with a lot of moving parts? I’d like to learn more about mid zone as well if you just want to touch on all of it.
Brett, found your channel a few months ago and this is absolutely excellent. I played football for 10 years (OLine) and I learn SO MUCH from each video (except this one - we ran a lot of outside zone and this threw me back to the film room in August). Keep doing what you’re doing and especially keep being your authentic self - I loved the ad read and how it was both personalized and honest, explaining somewhat how the content creation industry works. Love the content and love the videos. Can’t wait to see the team-by-team previews this summer.
This is exactly what I want in a football content youtube channel. I never played football, but I WANT to "get it" as best I can. There's a big gap between the talking heads and the deeply technical stuff (mostly aimed at highschool football coaches). There's only a handful of channels doing this sort of thing and nobody does it as well as Brett. Thank you thank you thank you.
You might also like The OLine Committee: youtube.com/@OLineCommittee …which is itself a recent offshoot of the “Trenches with Boone” series on another channel Both are mostly film study, and based around former pro offensive linemen, mostly Alex Boone who played guard in the league for 12 years and started a Superbowl for the 49ers under Harbaugh. Smart guy. Good analysis and lots of little insider peeks.
I second this.. if he says he could talk about it for forever, that sounds like some content ready to go.. maybe he'll be able to release something before next sponsorship deadline :P
I've requested this before and will request it again: A *FULL* introduction to offensive *and* defensive formations and concepts. I'm talking route trees and concepts (e.g., smash, dagger, flood), philosophy behind under center and shotgun, etc. on the offense. Cover 0-3, 6, and 9, man, coverage system concepts (e.g., Fangio v... others...). I would watch all of it. Perhaps multiple times.
I could see a current positions coaches in college or nfl quit doing that and start youtube channels if they have the skill and charisma to pull it off. Shit maybe Brett could put some coaches on. Have them discuss things. Shit PMS is trying it when he brings on Coach Pag or has players like Pac, Dbutler, Aj and company explain things. Brett just broke this down so well. This was great content
This would have to be a full series because there's no way to go over all those in just a handful of videos. And at that point I'd encourage you to look at his deep dives. He covers a lot of concepts and their names often enough. He just did a whole video on the Tampa 2 defense, it's origin, what it comes from, how it works, what situations is it for and how to set it up effectively. But I agree he should compile them in a playlist and then make it a series he revisits regularly
@@MAJ0ROCEL0T Yeah I was thinking a series on this. He’s done a couple one-off videos like this, and I’ve enjoyed all of them. It would be cool to have it be a series!
Do a google search with the terms Matt Bowen, NFL 101. He did about 20 articles on offense and defense for bleacher report about 10 years ago. He did stories on pretty much ever topic you requested. If you read the stories there are links to other stories he wrote that will help you find them all. Cover 1-4,
A coach once explained blocking to me as train tracks. A lot of times people think as blocking similar to man defense in basketball where you block a certain guy. But you block a track and anyone who runs into that track. Pre snap you have to determine what the track is and post snap you just find anyone that is in the tracks and put them on their ass. Outside zone is the perfect example of that
According to the wonderlic tests at the combine average intelligence by position #1 Center #2 QB #3 Tackle #4 Guard Any good o-line coach as soon as the line comes back to the bench goes right to the center and says "Tell me what you are seeing."
This content is amazing. I'd be down for a this to be a series.. certainly gives you years of content. This channel rocks Brett. Thank you so much. Been a fan for 5+ years.
as a former undersized lineman and somebody who only had my spot due to knowledge of blocking schemes, i love your channel and how you break down the abstract of football so many people are just blind to
I'm a simple man, I see Brett uploaded a video, I stop working, put everything on hold, and watch it. These videos help with the offseasonitis. So thank you Brett.
We can all watch videos on what players do and they plays they make, but Brett, you help me understand WHY these plays work. Please keep doing more of this. This is an incredible resource.
In college when guys would try and transition to d-line they would frequently have a hard time adjusting to just how quickly the game happens. Its usually decided in 3 steps.
Fantastic content. As a Packers fan I might have nightmares again tonight about that 2019 NFC championship game but great video all the same. These technical breakdowns of schemes are really interesting.
Yeah the normies don't get it. Any run play film session 5 minutes breaking down the o-line, 30 sec to tell the back he did or did not do a good job finding and hitting the hole.
God i cant get enough of these breakdown videos. This is what i live for. This is the type of football videos I love learning about because its hard to realize what is happening in a play in real time, but when youre made aware of it, youre going to be able to point it out immediately and its fantastic.
Definitely do a video like this for weakside, inside, and every other kind of zone run. Great stuff. I remember how Denver in the 90s used to chew up every defense they played running Terrell Davis with those concepts and the 49ers are the best at it now.
Those Denver teams were the best at blocking it IMHO. New rules now on cuts so it isn't as pretty. Dudes would be talking trash and Mark Schlereth would just laugh and say "Watch your knees" ;-) If the d-line works hard to maintain gap integrity then the backside cut chops them down. If they protect themselves from the cut then massive gaps open front side.
15:20 that block isn't impossible for a backside guard and center. The only reason it doesn't work consistently is because your Center leaves you hanging when going against a shade or a 1 back side, your BSG is just dumpy and lazy, or your whole unit has no dawg in them. I was always coached to take care of 1st level 1st so as elementary as this scheme is, as an OL the emphasis on pad level, feet and technique is paramount and underrated. I love the rest of the analysis.
Surprised Brett didn't mention that this zone blocking scheme started with the Packers and Vince Lombardi's run to daylight. Which was only stopped by Landry's Cowboy flex defense designed to protect the middle linebacker from being blocked. Unfortunately the flex's Achilles heel was the wide open passing schemes now in place.
Well, we weren't doing history or how to try to stop it. But that brings me to Lombardi apparently adapting this from a single wing play. That means if that play is one of the original plays that this play is, just like the qb position because Halas wanted single wing tail backs, designed for that MF Jim Thorpe gold medal decathalete.
Not only did those 2019 niners run outside zone well, but they're counter and inside zone game with Kittle and Juice picking up extra gaps was insane. They literally ran through the NFC into the Superbowl
Maybe consider making a video about the Falcons, they performed much better than they were expected to last year and did especially well running the ball.
Raheem's path on that cutback vs. the Ravens looked a lot like a puck carrier standing up a hockey defenseman while entering the zone. The way the linebacker gets stuck in the middle of his stance: Raheem gone.
Dude, Brett, I just wanna say that your videos have taken me from a watch-just-the-superbowl-and-just-for-the-ads, never-played-football type fan to a whole-ass football fan, occasionally able to predict plays, and just enjoying the game so much! Thank you!
Ah thank you for stimulating football nerd in me and also bring back some old school memories of zone blocking schemes in college. Ours wasn't as detailed but was still detailed and all those lil minor things made so much of a difference. And you right when its rolling...absolute art and soul snaching. Amazing video as always
I have to feed the algorithm on this one: I love these detailed explanations of different concepts, makes you see the game in a whole new light. Keep on analyzing Brett!
I absolutely loved it. It has the right amount of details for any casual viewer (of football, in general) to actually follow. It will be fun to follow it up with how a good defense can counter it (other than a sloppy execution by offense). After all, football is also a chess game between the offense and defense. So it'll be nice to see the theme alternate. Thank you so much for the good work :)
brett, these are the type of videos we all want to see!!! we would all watch those breakdowns on other zone runs. thank you!!! and may i suggest that when the season starts you do a weekly breakdown on a certain scheme or call you liked from that week?
This specific iteration of outside zone, from the Shanahan coaching/offensive tree is mostly referred to as "wide zone" now for anyone interested in learning more. If you look up outside zone you're going to get spread zone and spread buck sweep. Thanks for the video. Definitely subscribing.
This is great. If you wanna do inside zone please do! One thing you mentioned in passing that I think is very underrated is the running path of the running back. For instance in your example at the end with the Ravens on D with outside leverage, the way the running back appears to be taking an outside path but then bouncing back inside makes it easier to block on that side. The running back can greatly improve the success of the blocks on that side and therefore get more yards on the play. 👍🏼
This quality of consumable educational content needs to continue to exist. So much so that I actually made a point of going back to several of your recent videos to rewatch them to the end and make sure I watched the ad read. Just to make sure your sponsors know we want more of this.
Brett, Alex Rollins, Sammy Gold and billy stephens been holding it down for years. Y’all are the reason i wanna get into coaching after my playing days. Love the details you and all these others go into depth of the most simple plays in football
Another banger. Thank you sir. I would love to see more "nerdy" zone videos. This was great. Can I get some clips of Arian Foster and that amazing Texans run games from 2010-2014? Question how much does RB matter in this system?
Awesome video, Brett. I think this "play breakdown' video would have benefited from a clear description at some point of why the play is called what it is. For example, with "Outside Zone", why is it called that? What is "outside" about it when, as you explained in the video, the RB can bounce the run inside the tackle. What is "zone" about it when it seemed the play is designed initially to go through a specific "gap" vacated by the DL. And what makes "inside zone" inside zone, when outside zone can be run inside the tackle? For viewers who've never played the game I think explaining all of this would be very helpful :) Keep up the great work (including with my LA Chargers).
Well said. 2 things. First the outside zone with Mostert was undefendable. If the defense did everything correct, it still was usually positive yardage. However, if just 1 defender over or under pursued, his speed (turned into power) and balance was insane, he would beat the defender to the point of impact get through the arm tackle and run away from everyone. The second point, that 2019 team was SOOOO GOOOOD at faking blocks. Kittle and juz would run by the EMLOS after getting him in the habit of taking them on, and the runner would just run right by. Then the OL would "lose" blocks to DL. Richburg would "try" for a reach block on the 3T to get them to get down the line. Then seal the inside for the counter while another blocker is pulling to lead through. Those 2 Packers and Viking games are masterpieces.
This would be an amazing series. I'd love to see God's favorite pass play, God's favorite blitz, God's favorite special teams punt cover call. The level of detail here was great!
I was a huge Broncos fan in the 90's and I remember how they implemented the zone run. I always got the impression that almost a kind of 'hail-mary' attempt to develop a run game behind John Elway in order to get him some ultimate success in the twilight of his career. So what do you do with athletic slightly-undersized lineman who were mainly there to protect Elway? (1) Draft a RB at the ass-end of the draft with middling athletic talent but top-tier vision. (2) Develop a run game relying on intelligent athletic offensive lineman and RB vision. (3) Convert Elway from a scrambling rocket-arm, do-it-all QB to a game manager who severely punished any defense daring enough to cheat the run-game? It was truly amazing to see that team transform into the juggernaut they became mid-90's on the back of the zone-run scheme . I'd argue that Alex Gibbs was a genius and should go down as Top 3 position coaches in football history.
Just go all-in on the zone run scheme that the 9ers have been doing for a few years now. There's a ton of content, a lot to learn and demonstrate, and it's super interesting.
We used this a ton in highschool we called the blocking assignment a scoop block and then between the play side guard and tackle an ace block on the 3 and we basically just used the tackle to nail the 3 and then go look for work wether it was the play side, backside or a poor safety tackles love head hunting and from this angle it’s so easy to tell what’s coming based off the center guard tackle and tes alignment guard and tackle are in closer on that side and little is out further than normal to bring the end way out making his job easier creating that big ass hole on the bubble it was a staple of what we did and we probably ran it 25+ times a game
I was O-line in high school. It’s simultaneously amazing to see how similar the NFL scheme is to what we ran as kids. But at the same time the complexity and execution makes it seems like a whole different sport. It’s very familiar and very foreign at the same time.
Let the record show that it's still May 31st for another three minutes and therefor I am completely on time with this release.

For viewers who've never played the game I think explaining all of this would be very helpful :)
Keep up the great work (including with my LA Chargers).

Yes Brett, would love to see more break downs like this. Thanks!
Your transition into sponsers are nice. I don't skip unlike most other youtubers. Good job.
Bring on the nerdy details!!! Love your channel!
Any content you put out on offensuve or defensive scemes is a must watch. I love watching and learning from your videos.
I love this channel cus I feel really smart and like I understand everything when in reality most of it goes over my head
Love this stuff. I’ve learned so much from this channel. Made me so much of a better football player.
Well said.
Those 2 Packers and Viking games are masterpieces.
random note- the mock offseasons were an incredible idea and i really hope you bring them back next year
God I love running the ball
Absolutely loving this in-depth content!
Excellent work on this. I thought I understood the concept very well but I learned some new things today. Appreciate your work!!
Yes, Yes, please talk about run game stuff forever. I want individual videos about all of those concepts. It's fantastic, I love this stuff.
Great work! Excited for those podcasts!
You really need a playlist with your videos where you explain concepts. I can never find any of them without scrolling through all of your videos
Please give us more videos like this, they’re so good
I truly love this channel, amazing video Brett
We used this a ton in highschool we called the blocking assignment a scoop block and then between the play side guard and tackle an ace block on the 3 and we basically just used the tackle to nail the 3 and then go look for work wether it was the play side, backside or a poor safety tackles love head hunting and from this angle it’s so easy to tell what’s coming based off the center guard tackle and tes alignment guard and tackle are in closer on that side and little is out further than normal to bring the end way out making his job easier creating that big ass hole on the bubble it was a staple of what we did and we probably ran it 25+ times a game
Great content! Would definitely be interested in a video breaking down the difference between outside zone and inside zone
I was O-line in high school.
It’s simultaneously amazing to see how similar the NFL scheme is to what we ran as kids. But at the same time the complexity and execution makes it seems like a whole different sport.
It’s very familiar and very foreign at the same time.
More of this please! Content gold!
Absolutely want more Brett, keep the scheme stuff coming
This is the best vid I have seen about football since I watched that Oregon fan explain their offense ten years ago.
I'm very much here for the nerdy conceptual content. Please do more of these!
