      1. Thank you and love from my family to yours.
      2. This video is amazingly put together.
      3. I personally feel frustrated as I have said this for years in forums and comments sections for years (almost two decades) and been ridiculed by casual idiots online who only play Madden and finally have a singular video to link to.
      4. It is too bad that, in Madden on the PS2 and later Xbox 360, these defenses "never" work as designed/intended. Especially with the default All-Pro settings for online play.

Further proves that even in the NFL, great defense isn't about trying to always fool the offense. It's about having great players and keeping it simple and executing. There's only so much you can call on defense and remain fundamentally sound, and this is a good point that almost all defense at its base is fundamentally the same.

Side note: one of my favorite things to watch was the 2010s Bears facing the Packers year after year, because while Aaron Rodgers killed everyone, Brian Urlacher almost singlehandedly would give him unfortunately more trouble than just about anyone. The problem was, while Urlacher would give Rodgers trouble, as was the case the entire time Urlacher was in Chicago, the offense would give him almost no help.

The way my high school coach described it to me and how i describe it to my players as a DC is that Tampa 2 is essentially a Cover 1 Robber with an extra safety. In fact in my playbook i literally call it "Robber 2" and use it against passing teams when i want to bring in a dime package because imo it works best when that mike zone over the middle is a DB instead of a linebacker

    Great as usual, Brett.
What I’m wondering is, why is old all-22 film so difficult to get ahold of? The NFL already uploads the more recent all-22 film. Is it a simple matter of they just haven’t gotten around to it? Or do they think there’s not enough of a market to make it a worthwhile endeavor? Or is it a matter of maintaining some sort of racket/information diet whereby only a select few chosen initiates are deemed worthy of studying the game at a serious level?
Same question for the college all-22: why the secrecy and subterfuge with respect to access? What is the incentive to make this view of the game so difficult to obtain? Is this a matter of people who constantly preach competition being afraid of competition? Is there some sort of competitive advantage that making access difficult provides? Doesn’t every team already have as much access as they want to their opponents’ all-22?
What is the real story of what’s going on here? My theory: people absolutely love this game, and any way you can help people to understand the game more will only help them fall more deeply in love with the game, which, at the end of the day, means growth for both the game as a game and growth in profits. What’s the downside here that I’m missing?

I played football in high school, and we played cover 3 as our base defense, while some of the basics were met the free safety was to cheat to the left but not all the way because you leave the backside corner on an island and this wasn’t ideal. As far as the will line backer it was never a man coverage with the back. We called it being a rat, if the back went to the weak side you carried, but if the back is for instance in pass pro, you played the middle of the field for crossers or drop to a hook zone.

Fun "full circle" correlary is the "3 Cheat" coverage run by Saban disciples (especially Kirby Smart), which turns a cover 3 distribution into an invertedTampa 2. Instead of a fast bail to MOF the deep safety on early downs takes "cheat steps" to the MOF reading the QB. He becomes a middle hole player until reading dropback pass. Allows him to be break on in-breaking RPOs and be a +1 in the fit to cap everything or vs QB run. You get the box safety, corners matching #1 deep, and you have a guy who is playing essentially Tampa 2 Mike backer working down off the table instead of having to work back behind him... And if he reads dropback pass, he can fast bail to the post hole bc it's still rip/Liz Match.

Wouldn’t in this 3 Buzz having a safety as the mike be ideal ? Especially a taller physical Traditional SS , like an old school Cam Chancellor type we don’t really see anymore? I’m just wondering how an even an athletic Mike LB like a Leonard or a Warner , not have the ideal skills for covering a TE in man compared to a SS, just seems like a better fit for that scheme…. Being that a Hard hitting great tackling Safety would be great in the run in those plays but way better in coverage than a MikeLB….just curious

It really start in Pittsburgh with Bud Carson plus Tony Dungy was a DB coach. When Tony Dungy went to the Bucs Monty Kippen tweak the Tampa 2 to a Cover 3 Buzz and Invert.

    Thx for the video Brett.
Seeing that you used the tape of your Luke Kuechly filmroom episode from years ago, made me kinda sad as a Panthers fan.

I remember watching NFL playbook with , Brian Balldiinger and sterling Sharpe ,. i remember the show was going to a commercial and they had warren sapp on there for a segment, warren sapp said that cover 2 in tampa was actually a cover 3 if you get deep enough . i was in 8th grade it was like 06 . and that stuck with me.

Thank you for your hard work. That sting you feel never quite wears off, but it gets duller over time.

    Hey Brett,
The whole breaking down the country cover 3 concept to what's actually called was super interesting. Would a video ever be on the books that would bring up the commonly known concepts in football and compare how they're presented vs how they're actually called? I don't know, seems like some interesting march content for next year

Awesome video as always Brett! Very informative on how such a simple defense was so effective for so many years.
Recommendation: Jim Johnson’s 4-3 defense of the 2000s - it’s the same defense (or variation) that Spags, Ron Rivera, and Sean McDermott run from their years of working with him.

Brett great work here...the blocking scheme & little nuisances are awesome...I see you used Shanny & 49ers as they are 👑 at it but see many young co-ordinators using it more now as Ben Johnson uses it quite a bit but not exclusively
