As a journalism student, Ty's description of how we are taught is 100% spot on.
Don’t worry cuz I got u
I'm also currently a journalism student, and 100% agree with Ty's description. It's EXACTLY what I've been told.
Literally what I was thinking lol
I’m going in to broadcasting and sometimes I really doubt myself. Do you have anything to say to encourage me, I’m in my freshman year so it’s a little hard right now
@@TheHaydenCokerShow I would simply say enjoy it and remember that everything will work out. There might be times where it seems that you are not as good as those in your class or everything is so overwhelming, but if you just put in the time and effort necessary, it will all work out.
McAfee in the boy's hands down have the most energetic podcast / Radio Show out there
Facts pat
Love your content.

Tip # 1 be an former professional athlete
Or start screwing one
That’s how the major networks are. If you have a pulse and once played in the NFL or NBA, you’re in!
You're honestly right though, you instantly get the job and have tons of followers already and you're extremely successful. It's hard for new people to get into the door at places like that because they Hire a ton of retired players. Your chances of beating them out are slim to none.
Not true. I can name like 10-15 former players that had high success in media. Pat is 1... I can name like 50+ sports media broadcasters/journalists that made a living from this and never played sports. The top, highest paid guys didn't come from being pro athletes they came from media.
Noted 👍
I've seen a few comments talking about how Ty's description of journalism professors is so accurate, as a journalism student I 100% agree. Based on my experiences I'd advise getting involved early. No matter what side of sports journalism you want to pursue, there should be opportunities at most schools to gain valuable experience. The earlier you get involved, the more you'll get out of it and the more connections you'll make. If anyone out there is looking into pursuing this and wants some advice or someone to talk to, I'm here and more than willing to help as much as I can.
I’m a high school student and I’ve thought about going into to sports journalism and broadcasting because I love talking about sports and I feel like I have a little bit of a knack for it, but I’m not sure because I don’t want to be just sitting as like an intern as ESPN or whatever for half my life.
@@wildfirekkfires4523 if this is what you're passionate about I'd advise you to consider it. I'm a junior journalism major. It's a hard field to get into but I feel that once you're in and prove yourself you'll find opportunities. You may need to intern for someone like ESPN temporarily, but you should get a lot out of it. Also it's not going to be half your life. Internships last a few months, maybe a year. Once you complete them it's likely to either get you a better opportunity with that company or a useful reference to work for someone else. From my experience it seems like is a business where companies promote from within, and if you do what you're supposed to you'll likely get a higher position.
Hey man, I’m actually the kid who asked the question and I’m a freshman at community college with all the pandemic stuff going on, but was hoping to go to Mizzou, and probably going to transfer there. Any tips on starting a brand? I currently write stories for our schools paper and want to start a channel where I talk about sports, but don’t have the luxury of all the equipment at this moment. Any tips or advice you can give is much appreciated. Open to all things!
@@braedenrockwell1642 You don't need fancy equipment to get started. If you have a phone or a laptop and a mic you can create videos or podcasts or whatever else you want. They may not be great now but they can only get better. My advice would be to continue writing for your school's paper, but when you go to Mizzou or wherever you end up start writing for their paper day one. At the end of the day just do it, I feel like the hardest thing about journalism is getting started so once you clear that hurdle you should be able to get the help you need to take the next step.
jordan kendall much love my man. appreciate the feedback. any work you have out there that I can give a look? or socials?
Pat is definitely right, the internet just wants people to be real. That's why his show is so successful... we get to see their personalities, but they're professional enough to research topics and stay up-to-date on what to talk about. It's all about striking that balance between being genuine and being professional. I think this show hits that balance really well.
Thanks! I have a lot of things at my disposal and I was maybe thinking of doing a podcast at some point in the future. I've had a dream for a long time about going to school for journalism, and something like this is truly what I need.
Do it man! I run a sports podcast and have been doing sports related stuff for broadcasting since high school. Go for it! Hell I only get a few views but it still puts you ahead of the ballgame. Anything you can do to make yourself standout, go do it and live it up!
I'd say an invaluable lesson is to know "the code/rules".
1. Be someone that can be trusted by those who you talk to. Don't go out blabbing things someone told you if it isn't meant to be shared.
2. Don't be negative with the person you're interviewing. You can ask tough questions without calling someone out.
3. Be you. Have a style that's your own - but don't be a phony.
4. Lastly, care about what you're asking about. Like Pat said - educate yourself about the subject. Even if you’re not an expert on something just know a little about a lot of things so you don't come off sounding like an idiot.
I will be on ESPN I have a major love for sports, analyzing and talking sports, sports artifacts, and such and I live to talk. I’ve been struggling so long to know what I want to do but I think this is the life for me. I live writing and researching and I think there’s nothing better than to write in what you love. I would love to deep dive into sports and share my sentiments with the world. I really love the understanding of how “ the game” works and elaborating on it . It’s seems like such a long road ahead but I’m manifesting this! Book It!
Hit the nail right on the head Ty
I started my channel to get a jumpstart in my career, and I am majoring in communications right now. Just take it one day at a time and work hard at it and you can get there, it's hard sometimes for me but I know what I want in the end. Thanks for the great advice Pat McAfee!
I’m also majoring in communications if u need another voice for ur channel hmu😂
The first few seconds of this video is Pat laughing hysterically. You know this is a good day
hell ya dude i love this clip. I started my basketball channel 2 months ago and already have 2k subs and I go back to this clip from time to time. It's true just put in a crazy amount of work and do something different I'm just an idiot in a bedroom w/ a laptop.
Ty could not be more spot on about the mindset of Journalism Professors
Tip #1 have a indoor practice facility *bengals*
Thank you so much guys
Thank you. I needed this video.
My dream is to be a full time
Sports commentator
Don't piss off people....unless you're a heel on nxt 😊 For the brand!! 💖
great video
Great advice, sir!
Think about Stephen a Smith who was a beat writer covering high school sports for little to no money and he did that for YEARS. Now he’s working for Mickey Mouse and is making amazing $ that he earned from grinding. There’s tons of factors, but it’s hard to beat hard work and never quitting.
Some say that even to this day, when Pat McAfee goes to sleep, all he sees is Troy Polamalou in his Steelers uniform
My son is trying to pick a college for this exact career and its been stressful any advice, he also has a UA-cam channel so he is trying to get a following early!
Whats his youtube
As someone working in Sports and TV production. Yes, Ty. This is exactly what we are told "Be a yes man, and work your way up".
what did you major in?
Well, Now I have the tools to be sports broadcaster. Thanks for the advice Pat. 💪💪
Ehhh, I wouldn't say a 5 minute video with a handful of different people's perspective would mean you have the 'tools'. Tools are molded over time - with experience, knowledge, and skills. After watching this video, I'd say you have a starting point to be a sports broadcaster. Keep working my dude, and good luck.
im on the same level amen
How do you become an nfl scout?
You don’t
Usually Former Players and sometimes Coaches Son's....... my Sister knows a scout named Zack Crockett for the LV Raiders and He played for them
What about if you’re looking to work in sports production (videography, production, audio, etc)?
Thank god I live in ny I lived in a small pa town the local news in NY is prob the best local news in the country and when i throw it on to see who got shot it's not cringe worthy
Question to everyone who reads this and can answer.. recommended sports media/ sports journalism online programs?
I want to see that ferehty interview
Inspirational
Pat, would you ever come out of retirement and play again, for say, Pittsburgh?
💋👁🇩🇪 Still No.1 in Ping Pong!
I’m wanting to be a sport’s broadcaster but is it too late for me too start studying at 20 years old? I’m trying to get a diploma.
Go to a school that you’ll be able to get experience while you’re getting the diploma
@@jaydentaylor4299 I’ve been homeschooled my whole life i forgot to mention that.
Never too late
Going to school for literally this
You like that Matt prater kick to win the game
Hey pat I was hoping you could explain how Green Bay was third in the division even though they beat the saints and now that it's looking like Seattle is going to lose does that mean Green Bay jumps in the number one spot and how that all exactly worked out Green Bay was three even though they beat the saints in the head to head
Yeah you either gotta have family in the bussiness, friends in the bussiness, or be a former player. Been writing sports 15 Years published all over , better then 80% on TV personalities , with better info. Cant even get a sniff .
Keep grinding.
Be active on twitter‼️‼️‼️‼️
137th! Did I nail it? Did I do it gents?
People just want honest down to earth takes and arguments on sports. We are tired of the crazy obviously biased Stephen A, Mccoy, and Orlovsky saying crazy things just to try and boost ratings. Local podcasts after games will be honest and give credit when it’s due to both teams.
Repent! For the kingdom of God is at hand. Get right with God!
Have the name Golic lol jk

Going to school for sports journalism is a waste lol useless you got connections

Hey, I’m the one who asked Pat in this segment. Appreciate what you have to say. I’m actually going for Journalism as a whole, but it got roped into sports journalism. I’ll take your advice though. God bless!
