Absolutely with JT. If Josh Allen is the example you’re using of QBs improving in the league, you’re gonna have a rough time.
It's the same kind of thing with CJ Stroud. Who's gonna be this year's CJ? No one. He had arguably the greatest Qb rookie season ever. That's not gonna get run back every year. Don't beat your guy up too much for for not being able to duplicate it, whoever it ends up being.
It's like Justin Herbert as well. You had to assume Mario Crystoball was a literal clown of a coach that can also be an elite recruiter who also would waste an elite QB throwing bubbles and PA boots exclusively for 90+% of plays all while loosing winnable games because of his fear of letting the now top 6 QB in the world throw against the sun devils
I know its not really this class but not everyone is Drew Brees or Russell Wilson, height and body type matter also, they are the exceptions to the rule

You guys should do a special video talking about the origins of the Sean Payton system. Everyone says it is over complicated and only Drew could make it work to perfection but i never saw a video explaining de Xs and Os about what really makes this system so difficult to play in and the origins of it.
Sean Payton is way over rated. Brees made him who he is. His offenses were easy to predict the real genius is the kid Sean mcvey with rams. In super bowl he got the ball to the best wr consistently even though every one knew ,,and still won the game
It would be great if JT could do a mid-season qb recap for the next season (or something similar), I watch his fantastic breakdowns but having a more concise recap of the goods and bads when they are in the league would be really cool! And doing it with EJ and Brett would be the cherry on top
Even though I support the Bills, and we do not need a QB, one of my favorite things in the world is seeing a team pick their guy on draft day. That feeling of "this is the one" is probably the best feeling in sports as a fan.
Nah, the best feeling is when they pick that guy and they're right about him. Zach Wilson and CJ Stroud give very different results though drafted in about the same spot. As a Texans fan, 2023 was one of the greatest years ever.
I’m not saying the superbowls aren’t my favorite part. But I understand what you’re saying. Watching Pat “trot” onto the field and throw 50tds his first year starting (second year in the league), was so damn awesome. We didn’t know what he was gonna be. We heard good things (just like every fan base hears about every qb). Getting rid of Alex smith forcing Pat to start was a sign of good things, but you still never know. We were hoping the man could compete on a week to week basis and hopefully improve. 50tds and an overtime loss in the afc championship game to TB12 where Pat didn’t even get to touch the ball. Yes sir! Ride of my life!

Shouldn’t we want passionate players leading our teams? Him crying over a loss/let down performance is showing you exactly how much he cares. I don’t even want to get started on the fingernail thing. The fact that “fans” actually care about that is legitimately incomprehensible to me. Who gives a fuck. The guy is just being himself and if that’s what he wants to do why should anyone else care? I hate the “diva” narrative that mainstream football media has tried to create about him. Everything I’ve heard about his character and work ethic from teammates, coaches, or literally anyone else who’s been around him in a meaningful way is that he’s exactly who you want leading your team and that’s all that matters to me. He's actually better than he realizes at calling out play-calling. He _sees it_ & points it out but rarely directly *says* it's the play-calling. But he called out Cliff Kingsbury for One Thing at least even though IMO it's not The Main Problem with him.
It's hard to tell if we're in a terrible period for coaches & play-callers. Even Andy Reid has a limited view of what he wants his offense to do & it never worked with any of his QBs. People forget this because of Mahomes. But Kellen Moore proved himself worse than both Joe Lombardi & Mike McCarthy & no one is calling _him_ out.
I thought that the internet would help fans force teams to fire the incompetent coaches. Instead people defend them. Greg Roman kept an MVP-calibre QB at a pedestrian level for _three full years _*_despite the fact_* that many analysts proved he was the problem. Matt Patricia, Josh McD & others still get work despite being so obviously inept.
& my favorite is still how everyone turned on Justin Fields. The Bears OVERTLY sabotaged him in so many ways, most caught on film & everyone said it was Fields' fault.
Not J.T. at least, but pretty much everyone else.
@@choosecarefully408 Of course its the playcalling. Offenses are way too predictable and pass happy. Its especially ridiculous when you see offenses that arent even good throwing all the time. This is directly leading to more qb hits and injuries. As a Packer fan, I started noticing the trend in 2018 with how defenses would play them. Defenses were basically playing pass every single play cuz they knew Rodgers wouldnt stick with the run. Playaction didnt work at all because the dline would just go straight for Rodgers and not fall for the ball fake. The few times the Packers did run it would usually be good gains but Rodgers wouldnt stick with it and defenses knew he wouldnt so they would gladly give up the occasional 10-20 yard run cuz they knew they would have the upper hand on the like 75% of the other plays. The pass to run ratio leaguewide should be somewhere around 45/55 but instead its the opposite and the league is paying dearly.
@@williamhermann6635Ah, cool. I wasn't watching from about '14 until '22 (when I found channels like this) & it _seemed_ as if this was the case, but I couldn't tell. What seems obvious is that a rash of coaches brought up on video games who don't understand that players get tired are in charge & that owners are enforcing top-down structures that harm their own teams. But I can't tell if this last was always there because I can only tell now due to the internet.
I don't remember anyone as bad as Matt Patricia, Josh McD or Brandon Staley, but Mike McCarthy who *obviously* falls to pieces in the clutch is still solely in charge of making decisions in it. This is why Rodgers was so miserable. HCs who refused to consider his opinions valid, likely due to maintaining a command structure, not because it was what was best for the team.
@@choosecarefully408 Mccarthy is where you lose me. The guy is #18 on the all-time wins list lol. He developed Rodgers and has now gotten the absolute most out of Dak. And heres the secret: neither Dak or Rodgers are big game quarterbacks and Mccarthy gets the blame. Theres few coaches out there that I will stand up for and Mccarthy is one of them.

As a michigan fan, I was on the fence about McCarthy being a NFL starter, but after going back to his 2021 film, when he plays behind Cade Mcnamara as a freshman, he's legit. Cut it loose and had deep, cross hash throws. JJ has all the talent and tools to be a top 10 NFL QB. He threw 5 TDs as a back up, constantly made impressive plays on broken plays.. escaped a for sure sack from travon walker during the Georgia. Also 2022 TCU game he cut is loose. JJ will be the next Justin Herbert.. my 2 cents

I was just about to mention that people should go back and watch his 2021 highlights. Thanks, cuz I can get long winded. The pass against Western Michigan is all I needed to see to know Michigan had what it needed in big games. That's when I knew he was a stud. I would have started him that year. That pass to Roman Wison against Ohio State and the throw he made across the middle against Georgia were also nice.
He has an absolute cannon and can thread the needle.

Your McCarthy conversation was so satisfying for my soul. We're Michigan fans and I heard so much crap about play calling, and my dad was so concerned because he kept getting text messages about how bad our passing game was, and every time my response was, "We are LITERALLY rushing for 300 yards a game!"
People also ignore that there were games were McCarthy put the offense on his back. He just wasn’t asked to do it every week because it risks the health of your qb when you do that. Not to mention Michigan had such large leads that in 8 out of 12 regular season games McCarthy did not take a snap in the 4th quarter
Most people don't realize that Harbaugh's definition of balance offense isn't = # of run vs pass plays, it's his team is equally equipped to beat you running or passing.

Those type of comments are from people who do not know football. They always bring the Penn St, "Michigan did not throw a pass imn yhe 2nd half"... Yeah, because they beat the #hit of them. Dominated them and thus Penn St had no chance of winning.

I always find it funny that when talking about JJ McCarthy people will say that the ran the ball 32 straight times, which is not true there were passing plays in there that were wiped away by penalties.

47:53 I think time to throw is important because of timing with WRs. Once you get to a certain point, play breaks down, but good teams like Chiefs seem to plan and prepare for that, like, "if play breaks down, next option is to go here." But more often than not, you want to be on time throwing. if you wait too long, play just breaks down.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence is a famous Carl Sagan quote. It made me smile to see Brett bring it up for evaluating prospects. I believe when you lack evidence either for positive plays or negative plays, it is the hardest to project. My biggest question for this revolves around learning and honing your craft. If a prospect is lacking tape of skills needed for the NFL, how likely is it they have enough experience to develop or hone those skills once getting to NFL? I think this is where a lot of evaluations falter.
My problem with it being used for McCarthy is Michigan was championship or bust this season basically and the argument is they chose to limit themselves to a one dimensional heavy run offense. If mccarthy was a top pick they would’ve used him.
@@JJ-zr6fu, as a rule of thumb, I don't hold it against prospects or give prospects the benefit of the doubt. If you don't have enough plays to show certain skills, it is an incomplete grade. Having a few incomplete grades along with a bunch of really good grades likely means the prospect has enough skills to lean on. The problem comes when you have too few good grades to form an opinion. That is where I am at for JJ. There is just too few good grades to make me confident in his ability to step i tup to the next level.

When the whole season was on the line against Bama in the 4th quarter on a drive they HAD to score a TD on, they went to JJ the entire drive.
4th down pass to Corum.
Designed runs for first down the next play.
Huge gain to Roman Wilson right after that.
TD pass to Wilson after that.
When their entire season was on the line and in the highest pressure situation, they relied on and went to JJ.
I love how people talk about Drake Maye like he’s a huge project even though he threw 60 TD in 2 years as a young starter

I 100% relate to his hesitation looking back at Herbert and questioning his rational, I feel that with Maye. I finally got around to my final grades and Maye is QB3 behind Caleb and Trevor going back over the past 4 drafts, but I still hesitate much like I did for Herbert.
Nervous Washington fan here, it seems like you would pick maye over daniels all day every day but I want you tell me why he’s that much better. ( and currently I want us to draft maye who’s the more prototypical big pocket passing QB)
I don’t like that maye misses so many layups but Jayden’s size and the fact he takes so many bad hits gives me RG3 flashbacks and I don’t want to go down that path again.

You’re telling Michigan didn’t ask mccarthy to be a dominant top pick qb because they wanted to be a one dimensional heavy run offense.
Yeah I don't super buy that either, although *part* of me wonders if Harbaugh just likes a super run-heavy offense. I think almost everyone agrees that JJ McCarthy is better than the other full-time starting QBs Harbaugh coached at Michigan: Jake Rudock, Wilton Speight, Shea Patterson, Cade McNamara. And yet ... he threw fewer attempts per game than all of them? In fact, the average attempts per game basically declined each season Harbaugh was head coach. (Leaving out the years when reps were split amongst different starters.) Rudock, 2015-Harbuagh's first year-almost 30 attempts per game. Speight, 2016, 27.5 attempts per game. Patterson, 2018-2019, 27.1 attempts per game. McNamara, 2021, 23.4 attempts per game. McCarthy, 2022-23, 22.55 attempts per game.
And it should be stated…
Herbert has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in the NFL!
He’s had some great talent around him on offense and defense and they have made what, one or two playoff games?

And, frankly, saying you can figure out the value of one player based on their team's results is stupid. I'm not sure Harbaugh will help, but FFS go watch Herbert videos on the QB School's channels-he looks at the actual game tape, going through the throws.

Having watched JT for years now the thing I appreciate most is that even though he knows his shit forwards and backwards he also has the humility to know his takes are not the gospel and that a lot of this is projection and guesswork. It terms of film breakdown at the QB position he is in a class of his own though. Great conversion boys.
Awesome conversation. One aspect of QB prospect evaluation I disagree with to a large degree is the hyper focus and bonus points given to QB's who hold onto the ball too long and 'create' with circus plays.
There is a stark devaluation occuring this decade of the Tom Brady type pocket pass efficiency king and clutch, accurate, quick-read ice in the veins QB in favor of qb's that will complete a pass with their opposite hand to avoid a sack for example.
Why are we giving bonus points to QB's who fail to read defenses properly or lack precision quick release pocket passing for guys that take high sacks and fumbles rates but occasionally make a circus play after they fail to get the ball out?
Do offenses want to rely on circus play scramble drills as a crutch for bad QB play from the pocket on an every down basis? Watching film of some of these guys, they rarely play from the pocket.
The ability to extend a play when it breaks down up front is great, but the bonus point and constant flowers to these guys and devaluation of better QB's who identify defenses faster and rip the ball out accurately and on time is wild to me.
NFL qb play for me comes down to efficiency, the rate at which QB's can convert positive outcomes than absorb negative outcomes and that's over all plays not one highlight play. Mike Vick was a highlight darling as a QB as an example but he was never efficient enough to go far in the playoffs.
Sullivan puts out good stuff even if I don't always agree with every take (Bryce Young blind hype train mob mentality last year). Good personality and root for his success in the industry. Seems like a good dude.
I would not be surprised if the best QB's out of this class are Bo Bix and Michael Penix. I hope for their sake neither land in Denver though as that team is a train wreck.
Very well thought out and articulate post. Given what you said I’m curious if you watch any Raider games and Aiden Oconnal playing for them last year. He IS NOT a runner but he knows where to go with the ball! Raiders fans are very split on trading up for a qb or just taking dudes and building around Aiden with out numbers 1 defense when AP took over and enough offensive talent with Adam’s, Jacoby Myers and a young stud TE in Myers. I’m of the opinion, let Aiden prove he’s not the guy.

@@user-cb2kw8hf1l Take this with a big grain of salt as I'm a Lions fan and mostly just watch Lions games, but I did get to watch more overall games this year in the NFL. I didn't see much of O'Connell. In our matchup Jimmy G was still the starter. After that game I saw a bit of O'Connell and wasn't overly impressed but to be fair to the young guy he was thrust into action well sooner than expected when you draft him mid-rounds as a rookie. I did watch the Raider vs Chiefs game late in the year where the Raiders gutted out a terrific defensive win, but what stands out and my mind flashes back to is that O'Connell didn't complete a pass after the 1st quarter, yet somehow the Raiders won in spite of that. I can't get that game out of my mind when I think about the Raiders situation.
Given that, personally I'd look to draft either Bo Nix or Michael Penix, and I'd avoid J.J. McCarthy for your team. I might trade up as well to secure one or the other if your team has a preference. Drake Maye could be intriguing if he slides, but personally I like Bo Nix's tape a lot, probably more so than Drake Maye. Maye to me seems like you're drafting on his traits and hoping he hits the high upside. He's more of a gamble where Bo Nix and Penix are professional level passers and QB's day 1 at a high level imo. I like those two guys a lot and I know I'm in the minority that is vocal and thinks they're both going to outperform expectations especially if they land in favorable situations on draft day. The old Raiders would salivate over Michael Penix, and considering Pierce, your HC, is mentioned as an old-school Raider type I would guess that's your teams' leaning, but I don't follow the Raiders closely and Pierce could be his own man with his own thought process. Unsure how much the old Chargers GM, Telesco?, will let Pierce decide or if he'll take the reigns with the draft pick alone. I don't know their dynamic. I'd much rather prefer Bo Nix land with you guys than the Bronco's where I feel like that's a bad situation for a rookie QB to be thrust into. GL on draft day whatever happens.

I appreciate the honest assessment of Bo Nix. I left a comment stating that Nix wasn’t a 1st round QB and someone responded that I was a fatherless child (which is very much untrue). Nix got beat out at Auburn by a guy that plays WR now and another that’s at Texas State why do people assume he’s a 1st round pick now is mind boggling to me.
Probably because he got better? I mean haven’t you gotten better in life at your trade? Plus it’s a known fact that Auburns offensive scheme was a joke!

@@misfits12o This is not NFL Teams front office rankings lol. This is JT's personal rankings. He clearly mentions Daniels as QB2, then says if it was between Maye and JJ, he'd lean JJ. He also like Penix a lot and says Maye misses easy throws which he can't afford to do in NFL.

I'm still confused about the whole haven't seen enough throws from JJ McCarthy -- he had the same number of pass attempts this past year as Jayden Daniels. I understand it was over more games, but it's still the same sample size of throws from this year.
Notice Brett was saying he'd have to watch 9 or 10 games of JJ McCarthy as if that was a lot. They're looking at a ton of players, so they don't go all that deep on them. Some of these guys only watch 1 game and then make up their mind. Most of them probably didn't watch any of JJ's 2022 film.

McCarthy's footwork reminds me of Stroud when he throws from that base. Hes very young....big upside. Hes3,4 years younger than Nix and Penix. BTW, I love Penix in this draft.

Caleb Williams is a play creator, but he also holds the ball long and away from his body leading to more fumble issues. But his downfield vision looks absolutely wild, that part had my jaw on the floor a couple times. Its something different from what ive seen over the years, he can get away from sacks and somehow still see a guy 40+ yards down the field and deliver it with a side arm. His tape certainly looks incredible, but he needs some polish and sometimes learn to take the drop off route. Hes going to be throwing to Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, and Cole Kmet. Thats pretty freaking good.
It’s going to be great for us Bears fans. And remember, no college QB is a finished product. They all have things they need to work on. Now he’s going to have professional coaching to correct things that he’s having trouble with. And his coachable. What’s not to like about that? It’s going to be great. It takes a team to win a game. But having Caleb Williams as your QB to help on that, that’s a great thing to have.
@@zonedout5998 yeah, and the supporting cast is arguably the greatest supporting cast a #1 player has ever received. Its a decent situation to wak into. Things can be rough for rookie QBs, but with Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, and Cole Kmet as your options? thats a huge safety net. Should be able to learn a lot the first year.

What I’ve seen on tape is his feet is never facing in the direction he’s throwing! I’m like how has that been missed by his coaches!

I'm glad the kid with 5 years of experience and 2 top 15 picks along with 2 NFL starting bookends is a tier above the kid who just turned 21, operated as pro of an NFL offense as you'll see in the collegiate ranks to the tune of a national championship in a season mired with controversy.
The point to make here is you're more than welcome to have Jayden a tier above McCarthy today and even as a rookie entering the league.
The issue many can't seem to parse through is the idea of projection.
JJ has all the tools and more than what Jayden has and if his developmental tract is even remotely competently handled, his ceiling will be sky high compared to a Jayden Daniels who most certainly feels more maxed out.
Moreover, it's fairly safe to say if you dropped McCarthy and Daniels into identical situations with identical developmental tracts, McCarthy would outpace and outperform Daniels in the long haul beyond the initial lead that Daniels has in say that 1st year or two.

The lack of understanding of Michigan in the Penn State game by NFL people is astonishing. Michigan couldn't pass block Penn State to save their life and it got JJ hurt early in the game. Chop Robinson would have sacked him 7 times because the O-line was banged up and rotating. Sherrone Moore saw the mismatch in the run game though and they exploited it over and over again and won a top 10 matchup on the road. When I hear NFL types bring it up in the discussion without context I know their knowledge is limited.

One thing’s absolutely certain: the kid in this class who will ENTHUSIASTICALLY enlist experts to help grind his weaknesses in the offseason is JJ. Go out there and get yourself the only guy available who hates losing just as much as Jim Harbaugh hates losing.
If you watch Oregon tape of Bo, he’s extremely accurate even outside the short game and leads WRs well. He wouldn’t work for every team but if he goes to a West Coast system on rhythm and timing he will excel.
