She shared her feelings about Science Diet so I wanted to share mine, in hopes it might help the pet parent watching all these conflicting opinions of you tube concerning pet food and pet nutrition.

It’s easy. A quality dry food, formulated by board certified nutritionists can definitely deliver a better balance of nutrients than fresh food. Now in a perfect world, feed fresh food with a healthy recipe and you’re all good. But about half of folks that do homemade or raw do it wrong… and that’s from the proponents, not me.

    • @jbrown715

I agree. But some self homemade or raw that is home prepared, Not formulated by nutritionist and or veterinarians, without proper calcium phosphorus levels and other nutrients can be worse than a bag. So it would be important to research if feeding home prepared meals cooked or raw. I personally feed lots of whole foods along with some kibble or can , they get different stuff each day, different meals etc. They thrive off rotational. I can't fathom only feeding a bag of kibble, let alone the same kibble the dogs entire life.

@@jbrown715Just an FYI: We've had our 12 year old since she was 9 weeks old. Thought we'd start her off as best we could diet-wise. After her puppy stage, began feeding her boiled, organic chicken breasts mixed with a bit of kibble/organic veggies. Only years later did we discover she was allergic to chicken. Tried organic ground beef with a bit of organic veggies for awhile, but it still seemed her stools were never 100% right. Then got her on beef Freshpet where she thrived for years. Strange, her stools weren't right on the boiled organic chicken/beef, but were great on the beef Freshpet which also had a bit of chicken in it. THEN we tried the ultimate designer dog food, Farmer's Dog. She had a major allergic reaction to that. To make THAT "allergy troubleshooting long story short", we now have had her on an off-the-shelf Purina Pro Plan kibble, salmon formula for a couple of months, and that has cleared all her terminal itching. We have slowly melded-in a cod formula from Farmina, but that is probably all the variety we plan on feeding her. She is just as enthusiastic about those 2 kibble varieties as she was with the Freshpet, boiled chicken/beef. Like I said, just an FYI.

Yeah even my vet who’s totally brainwashed by the big pet food companies into loving Hills, and Mars owned foods even admits that he agrees with me that fresh food is better than kibble. We don’t always agree on what are good and not good kibbles. But my vet at least admits to the fact kibble is made for the convenience of the consumer. I see this guys reply to you. And I understand it. I understand and agree that formulating and creating an appropriate diet home-made for dogs is complicated and hard. What I disagree with is that kibble is the solution. Instead of giving people kibble what vets should be doing is educating their clients on how to appropriately create homemade meals for their dogs and cats. Problem is vets CANT do that because none of them are actually educated in animal nutrition. It’s well known that vets only take a one semester course on animal nutrition. I’ve seen many people in vet schools talk about this fact and how little they actually are being taught. Not even vets themselves know how to appropriately create a balanced meal for dogs. So yeah it’s pretty hard because basically no one really knows for sure what is best for dogs. Vets are going off bias studies many of which I’ve read and was not impressed with, funded by these big brand pet food companies. The FDA doesn’t do much regarding regulating pet food and so people are relying on these private companies that we know objectively have a financial incentive to tell them what’s good for their animals. And then veterinarians have the f***ing nerve to tell us we’re being stupid and anti science for questioning what the pet food companies are telling us? It’s ridiculous. Because of this corruption people are forced to try and figure out what works best on their own through trial and error. And this shouldn’t be happening either. But it has to be because cancer rates prove that something is wrong with our dogs, and a lot of people including myself think it’s no coincidence cancer rates started increasing as our animals started to eat kibble instead of our table scraps

@@I-hate-youtube797 great comments. I understand thinking vets are simply brainwashed. But you need to consider vets use these diets on very sick animals and day in and day out they see the results. Even vets not interested in nutrition or how the diet works, will recommend them because they see them work! And vets talk! That’s why they love and trust Hills. I watched it for 3; years! Now as far as the research behind these results, it’s not like there’s one biased study produced by Hills(or RC or Purina) that determines how the dirt is made or even the results. These studies are studied, evaluated and vetted by other nutritionists who don’t work for the companies. Very often these companies will use independent studies to help them formulate a food. It’s not as simple as you think. And Hills and RC and Purina argue over certain issues and diseases, such as urinary diets. Vets by nature live evidence based research and clinical studies. They are comfortable with that. Anecdotal claims that they hear often, are very uncomfortable for them. And rightly so. Trust me, I wish folks like you would ask lots of questions ! But ask them to the people filling your heads with slick marketing gimmicks and totally ignoring nutrition! These people in UA-cam say things that are so blatantly false, I have to question their sincerity because many are in a position to know better or simply ask these companies nutritionists! They choose to remain ignorant or do they do it on purpose? If food companies simply provided their actual nutrient numbers and explained why, anyone could evaluate a diet. Instead you get ingredient games and philosophies and when I get the real numbers the diet is terrible. That’s corrupt to me!

Hannah, anyone telling you that is probably trying to sell you something or is sincerely wrong. Coran must be cooked to be bioavailable but provides many different benefits besides energy. It contain protein, fatty acids, fiber, and board certified vet nutritionists know this. Pet food marketers pushe high protein and meat because its easy to manipulated people into buying their products, not even asking if the nutrients provided are optimal. I find it really interesting that she’s a human nutritionist interested in animal nutrition, but yet she doesn’t look at the nutrients herself? From what I can see her channel focuses on dogs. But with cats though the nutrients are critical. I wonder if she knows about calcium and phosphorus? And that high levels of these two nutrients can be detrimental to a senior cat’s health? Only asking because these things are important as senior cats have very different needs than adult cats. I can only assume senior dogs have different nutritional requirements as well?

My job was to train vets and their teams on therapeutic and wellness nutrition. I did that for 34 years. And loved it! Learning about all the new discoveries and new diets and seeing the results in clinics every day was my real education. And it was a passion I still have. Too many people think what to feed has become a contest or a debate. It isn't. We feed what we feel is best for our pets. When I caught my kittens, I fed Fancy Feast. It made Colbie throw up. I switched to different commercial foods. Then Panda started throwing up anything I fed her. For over a year, they have had a mostly homemade diet. I made the choice, but I also don't have a choice. No matter what anyone says, or how good someone thinks "their" food is, my cats do well and don't get sick, on fresh food. There are others who's cats only eat wet food, or dry or a combination. That is fine. Whatever works for your pet, keep doing it.

Hello. I am in the process of learning more on this subject. I feed my 9 year old cat daily kibble (orijen) in small amounts. Cod (cooked) and wet canned. I am in England. I use Edgard cooper and lily's kitchen wet food. I asked both for calcium and phosphorus levels.
Edgard cooper said - Our calcium levels in our chunk recipes are mentioned AS FED in grams/ kg:
    Calcium
    CAT_AD_CHUNKS_TURKEY26-CHICKEN20 4.30
    Phosphorus
    CAT_AD_CHUNKS_TURKEY26-CHICKEN20 3.10
Lilly's kitchen only sent me the phosphorous.
The following phosphorous percentages are on a dry matter basis (DMB)
Tasty Cuts Chicken & Salmon: 1.2% phosphorus (DMB)
Tasty Cuts Beef: 1.8% phosphorus (DMB)
Tasty Cuts Chicken: 1.8% phosphorous (DMB)
Tasty cuts Ocean Fish: 1.8% phosphorus (DMB)

So the optimal range for a 9 year old cat is .7% phosphorus on a dry weight basis so you can see 1.8% is quite high. Of course the 1.1% is the best. At nine, lord willing your cat has lots of years left. The idea is to help reduce risk of age related diseases. If you haven’t done any bloodwork on her, a basic senior panel will let you know everything is fine and perhaps you don’t have to be as careful as the cat with elevated levels. Then I’d be telling you definitely find a lower phosphorus diet. Hope that helps!

Thank you. I have had blood work done and was told everything is ok.
Would it not be a good idea to seek out a wet/dry food low in phosphorus and calcium regardless. From what I understand from learning from you this is the hallmark of low quality. Chicken lips, feathers etc if these numbers are on the higher end. Hope I got that right.
One reason I am looking into this is my cat keeps developing cat flu like symptoms. This is something he has always had to some degree from been a kitten. However in the last year the symptoms would come back every one/two week.
He had to have an operation. A type of nasal wash out for the thick mucus. Runny eye. Hard breathing. I was told its a virus which keeps activating. So steroid/flu shot injection is required every 3/4 months to keep the mucus down after the op. I do as they say. But I am not convinced by this theory and am intrigued by toxicity.
The vets essentially said they don't know and the mucus could be a by product of something else. Feels like I am chasing my tail. Treating symptoms. He's been good for months now and I hope it stays that way. Apart from that he behaves like a kitten most days.
