i really like you but some of the things you are saying are simply not true.... 20 years experience here and while i agree that someone should come up with a competitor to rc that has the money and the means to do such comprehensive testing of the ingredient used.... i dont see anyone that is doing this... many other companies dont own the facilities either... i am telling you here and now that i dont know about science diet because i have not used it enough... i think they are ok but i do know that rc literally cause zero issues with the digestive tract and literally save life and extend life for diabetic patients... no joke... the food is causing the body to have no issues regarding the digestive tract so it is one less problem to deal with and they devour the food every single time...... i do however agree that if there was a company that did fresh food and could afford to own their facilities and do the testing needed on the used ingredients and live trials... then i would use them.... problem is it takes years to get reputation and on top of that no one has the money to do this it takes a lot of money to create a fresh food rc like company......

Could you possibly make a video with recommendations on some affordable dog food brands. Medicus is $40 for 32oz that would only cover 4-days. That would cost $300 per month to feed one 14 lb dog.

something affordable would be to grind up raw chicken quarters. my 120lb dog eats 1lb a day. it's $.40/lb. my cat eats 3oz.
you can use other cuts of chicken that you dont need to grind.

Great video, very informative and helpful. I looked into the Medicus vet diet and found that they only have a beef flavor for the sensitive stomache recipe. My dog has ibd and is allergic to beef. Our vet prescribed a hydrolized rabbit formula for our dog. I don’t like the list of ingredients in the royal canin , but the meat is hydrolized so it’s supposed to help my dog be able to digest the protein. Medicus in comparison has fresh organic ingredients but with regular meat. So, I’m not sure how their recipe will help with food allergies/ intolerance in dogs?

Hi Rachel, thank you so much for the great content! I've been watching and learning how to take better care of my dogs. Last year, after my mini schnauzer started having some vomiting, we decided to take her to the vet. They did blood tests and the results show that she has gastroenteritis (very common in her breed). The vet advised me to immediately change her food to Royal Canine Gastrointestinal Low Fat. I refuse of course because, well, I suffered the loss of my previous mini schnauzer as a result of many health issues that now I know, were because of me feeding her that same kibble prescribed and sold by my vet for years!! I don’t understand how they keep prescribing those. I guess money is more important than the health of the patients 😞

im going to test some of what she says ... even though i tried ... but what she need to understand is that the digestive system is shorter than humans... all the veggies go straight out unless it is really come in a powder form and even then then lots of it come out in the stool.... there is a reason to the addition of synthetic to cover all corners... the key is keeping it simple but keeping it tested rigorously and this is something very few companies are doing and i really dont know who to trust out of the "newer" companies

My dog is presently on a diet to establish if she has food allergies. What I am feeding her now for the next eight weeks is one of the brands you mentioned. I suspected that we had to go on a diet so I had found three products as an alternative I would like to try out. My veterinarian look at the ingredients but was not convinced that all the ingredients had been properly treated to break down the proteins. She could not find sufficient data with regards to the size of the proteins. However she had those information on three brands, namely Hills,Purina and Royal Canine. She is a very experienced veterinary with more than 30 years of practice so I had no reason to doubt her. It seems like these major companies have more scientific data to promote their products for allergies. I will complete the diet to establish if my dog has food allergies and then switch to a brand I think are better. The problem is that pet food is big business and there are so much to choose from.🤔🤔🤔

I’m doing the same. My dogs scratching has stopped on this prescription diet . But now to find out what we can transition to seems like a guessing game. The most help my vet is about this is telling me to try foods with novel proteins and minimal ingredients. This could take a while and I’m sure there will be setbacks. 😢

@@Solamia7 My dog has now been on the special diet for eight weeks and there are some improvements, however I am not sure if this is due to the diet or the medication she was on until a week ago. I am not convinced that her allergies are caused by the food or if she is reacting to something else. My suspicion goes now to soap we have been using , so I have change to a different kind that is said to be allergy friendly. We will see. We are going back to the vet in August and if there is no improvement I guess we can rule out food allergy.😁😁😁

@@treasuretrovel3816 luckily we are back to the normal diet for my dog. After the diet period we could establish that it was not the food she was reacting to. I am very skeptical to any major company that produces food whether it is for humans or animals. If find them very cynical and profit and stockholders trumps everything as long as they cannot be sued for it. They tend to add the cheapest ingredients they can to keep the production costs as low as possible. As for my dog I have selected two Scandinavian companies that I trust. One is called Vom the other Robur. Vom produces grind meat and the dried food is from Robur. I have also been made aware of the health issues grain free dog food can cause. Specially when they found heart issues with breeds that didn’t have this before it became a hype to buy grain free food for pets. One of the reasons why I choose Robur for my dog is that their salmon pellets are high on protein and they have added taurine something that can prevent heart issues. Now my dog is a Dogue de Bordeaux and they tend like most other large breeds have a risk of heart problems. I think we were both happy when we switched back to normal food. She eat more and gained some weight and for me it was the financial aspect of it. That special diet stuff had heroine pricing.😁🤠😁

Over the years every animal protein has caused my dog to eventually have loose watery stool and or explosive diarrhea. Each time I've switched proteins and each time she eventually becomes "allergic." I tried the plant based kibble mixed with wet and it's made her extremely gassy. The no kibble approach caused her stool to be like a smoothie all the time. Currently used a wet vegetarian formula with a prescription hydrolyzed protein kibble. I believe my dog has an IBD because of these sensitivities and also constantly suffers from ear infections, constant paw licking and heavy shedding. ( I should state she's a bulldog beagle mix leaning very bulldog.) Most supplements have proteins in them that get her sick. Constant testing has resulted in nothing conclusive. It's gotten extremely difficult and expensive and I don't know what else to do. My vet can't find the solution (they've been great and have tried hard), I can't lock down a good diet and the large hospitals are so booked up they mostly only take emergency cases. Any help would be appreciated.

It is amazing how our convenience is so much more important than the health of our pets. My 6 month old puppy has been on raw since he was 7 weeks old. He now weighs 104 lbs. and muscular. I don't believe in fat dogs, so at that weight he is very trim. It is sad to see fat or obese dogs. Eventually, fat or obese dogs develope heart problems, joint problems, ect.

Hey Rachel! My cat, Maddy, has been eating Science Diet as long as I’ve had her (8 years). She’s 10 and very healthy, for a senior kitty. I just adopted a dog and based on your videos, I feed her Ollie. I feel like I’m neglecting my cat’s nutrition now! Should I consider switching? Even if Maddy has been doing well on her Science Diet? And if so, what brand do you recommend? (She’s not on a prescription diet). Thanks!

Jackie, if I may…. I was a veterinary rep for Hills for 34 years. I trained vets and their teams on therapeutic and wellness nutrition. Your senior cat is doing great in Science Diet because it is probably the best food you can feed her. At 10, she is considered geriatric so we want to use nutrition to proactively reduce the risk of age related diseases. That’s why the ingredients in Science Diet are chosen by board certified nutritionists and chemists, to control micro nutrients like the minerals that could promote calcium oxalate stones in older cats and especially phosphorus contained in meat sources, that can damage older kidneys! I have a video explaining dry and another one explaining canned Science Diet cat food on my channel. I hope that helps!

I enjoy all of your videos. They are so informative. This one is so timely. I have an ongoing discussion with a supporter of prescription dry foods. It's the brand you did not want to mention in this video! Even their wet food contains corn and wheat. I try to explain there are better ways to get proper nutrients into a cat than with dry food, loaded with grains and carbs. That's what I don't understand. If these vets and nutritionists can develop pet food to treat an illness, why does the food have to contain corn, wheat and soy? Develop the "silver bullet" and put it in real chicken or beef.

    Hi Rachel,
The prescription diets are indeed not very good. The Hill's K/D gave my cat diabetes because of the high carbs. Cat's cannot handle carbs. He died because of it. I have started a course/degree in cat and dog food because of this. This school is independent and not sponsored by major pet foods. What I also learned is that you should not feed your cat kibble/dry food. They drink too little and because of that they are always dehydrated. That is a big cause in a lot of kidney failure in cats. I also thought I was doing right by my boy by giving him a good quality kibble with mostly meat and then he got kidney failure, my fault... The vet told me to give him prescription diet, high in carbs, stupid me, I listened to them... Then he got diabetes and died at 14, even with insuline, and also the vet didn't know what food I should give my cat with renal failure and diabetes... I know now, but I am too late. I still have his brother with me and he only gets fresh meat and prey. He is still doing great at 17.
Cats don't need veggies or fruit or rice, no plants, they need wet food/meat (Prey, Fresh meat, canned food) to stay hydrated. No carbs! Their blood sugar gets a spike every time they eat carbs and their body cannot handle that and then they get diabetes. They do need ballast, but that can be given in the form of Psyllium Husk (doesn't spike the blood sugar) or things like fur.
I am sorry, most of your information is so good, and you also explain everything very well, but at least the cat food of the brand you are promoting is not really good. For a dry food, yes, but cats should not be eating dry food. For dogs it is debatable, because some of them (not all) can handle carbs and dogs drink normally.
This is absolutely not meant to attack you or diminish your good work! I just wanted to share a little part of what I have learned. I just see so much people who love their pets so much and give them the wrong food because there is so much misinformation out there and the big kibble companies sponsor the vet (education of the vet).
Sorry if I made some mistakes, English is not my first language and I tried to explain it as clear as possible in English.
Also, I really only mean to give information and not attack anybody.

@@jackiedegroat6823 I don't know where you are from? I am located in Europe, so I don't know if any of the brands/store I use are available in the US. But I usually look at the ingredients. You can start with wet food/canned if fresh/raw is not possible for whatever reason. Make sure there are (almost) no plants (rice, grain other carbs or veggies) in it and no sugar. It is hard to find a totally carnivore wet food, usually I see like 1% rice (no more than 5%) and sometimes a little bit of fruit/veggies. That is fine too. As long as it is at a very low percentage
