    Thanks a lot for the new video - approach & landing into snowy ❄️ Rovaniemi (RVN) 🇫🇮 That’s a nice contrast to the destinations in southern Europe 🇪🇺 In my opinion your channel is good to think about the Airbus procedures. I sometimes ask a friend of mine about them who is a Captain at Eurowings as well. For my personal use I recently bought a new 360 degrees camera and I gonna use and test it in the upcoming months. Maybe a 360 degrees camera (GoPro or Insta 360) could be an improvement for your YT-channel as well. I would love it. Please think about the idea 🎞️ Once again thanks for all your effort and great work! Shout-out to Airbus for the better LCD-Screens. I don’t like the old CRT-Screens 😜 Have a nice weekend! Lukas

      Thank you so much for watching and the detailed feedback! I agree, the new screens are a great improvement. They are better readable and even have room for more information. I thought about using a 360 degree camera. My videos are all produced in 4k quality. The small 360 degree cameras which are currently available are not able to produce a straight 4k picture out of the 360 degree picture. We will only see 2.7 k or less. But I will keep your suggestion in mind and may come up with something in the future. Please stay tuned! Have a nice day!

    A couple years ago at Chicago O'Hare, a E145 went off the runway. I recently read a brief summary of the report, and when they started skidding they applied maximum braking -- a mistake! The best way to handle ice is no braking at all, or as little as possible. Obviously the best way to do *that* is to go as slow as possible in the first place -- Excellent taxiing here, and turning off the runway. I agree that single engine taxiing would have been very unwise! (I can even claim to have some real world experience: once in my life I've lost control of my car while driving on icy roads, and I like to think that my quick recovery from skidding to traction was a result of *not* panic applying my brakes. I let of both brakes and gas entirely and just kept my wheels straight until my traction came back.)

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for watching and for sharing the information about the E145 incident at ORD airport. I fully agree to your statements. When taxiing in these conditions, you have to be very very slow during all turns. Being that slow helps to avoid skidding and if it happens that you are skidding, it won't have any bad outcome because you are very slow. During our flight in the video, our reward for being that slow was that we did not skid at all. Have a nice day!

    Thank you for another fantastic video captain. I have a question, when taxiing, do you control the speed with small adjustments in thrust, or is the thrust from the idle engines enough for the maximum taxi speed, and you control speed with the brakes? Thank you so much!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the good feedback and your question! Whenever possible, we taxi with idle thrust and reduce the number of brake applications because carbon brakes wear out by the number of applications. Depending on the weight and other variable circumstances like if engine anti ice is on, we may need a little amount of thrust to start the acceleration of the plane to taxi speed.

    Just enjoyed your latest approach and departure vid Captain so it must be Saturday. Tell me, do you have some sort of noise-canceling device when you record the videos? Because there is hardly any engine noise in the background.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Рік тому

      Yes, you are right: It is Saturday. In regard to the audio, you can hear the normal cockpit audio in the video. A good amount of that audio is from ventilation fans and, for example, from the landing gear. If you jump to the gear extension on the video, you hear the sound of the extending gear. The engines are far away from the cockpit. In some videos, I increased the level of the background sound channel on short final to hear some more of the engine sound. But this increases also the noise of the fans. Let me know if you would like to see this again.

    another awesome video...all brilliant by the crew...just i dont understand how is possible to have an airport open to the commercial traffic whit the taxy fully white frozen...i like to watch also the documentary...one is about Ted Stevense airport at Anchorage...to stay open they fight every day to clean non only the runways but also the taxys...in Rovaniemi the taxy was wonderfull....to have a bob competition....ok the captain is skillful an capable to face this situation in fully safety conditions...but the crew of the airport has only one runway and one taxy to take care, and their job must to be better, in my opinion. bottom line, congrats again Captain...well done despite all!!! Federico from Rieti🤗🤗🤗👋

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the friendly feedback and your detailed thoughts. In general, the airport decides whatever they want and have to do in regard of clearing the runways and the taxiways. When the snow is removed, they also have to make sure that the residual water does not freeze again and makes the taxiway even more slippery than before. I do assume that this needs chemicals which they only want to use if there are no other options. I am 100 % sure that airports like Rovaniemi do always the best for the actual weather situation. The winters up there are long and cold. The airport crew must be very experienced in regard to winter operations. I have no complaints: The runway was clear of snow and only wet. The plane decelerated very good on that runway. The taxiways were snow covered and we taxied with lots of caution. We did not skip or slip at any time.

    Great video. Thank you.
    I have a question, if you please have time. It is often said that the plane when landing "is stable". What does it mean and since when does it become stable? Thank you

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Рік тому +2

      Stable or stabilized is a term we usually use to describe the final setup and positioning for a landing. We are stabilized, when we do have the landing configuration (flaps and landing gear), the speed is at or near the final approach speed and the thrust is set accordingly. Coming close to the runway, we also want to make sure that the track we follow is the runway track and that our vertical speed is appropriate in relationship to the groundspeed and the slope of the approach. For example: On a 3 degree glideslope we have to use a descent rate of about groundspeed x 5 to stay exactly on that path. We normally say, only from a stabilized approach, we can make a nice landing.

    Questions:
    1 why do both pilots have their hand on their sidestick? Isn't it supposed to be only the pilot flying?
    2 and why was a flightattendant in the jumpseat?
    3 are airports not required in the case of snow on the taxiway to clear the yellow line of snow?
    4 i would like to see if the 2 engines exhaust melted the icy snow behind the plane?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Рік тому

      The pilot flying has to have his or her hand at the stick to hand fly the airplane. During the approach, the pilot monitoring also has the stick at or near the stick. There are 2 reasons for that: The pilot monitoring has to be able to take over any time and the push to talk button for the radio is located on the sidestick. Airports are not required to clear taxiways of snow. Even the runway may be covered with snow. As long as the braking action on the runway would be ok, this is possible. Most of the time, the runways are deiced and only wet. The exhaust does not melt the ice during taxi because we taxi with very little or idle power. If we would increase the power to takeoff power I do assume that it may be possible that the snow and ice behind the plane may be melted and/or blown away.

    Around @1:13 the vertical speed selection of -2800 ft/m clears (to all dashes) at around 10.000 ft, apparently on it's own. Why is that?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Рік тому

      The vertical speed selection was a "leftover" in the display. It was not activated and cleared by itself. As you can see in the FMA, we did use vertical speed mode at that time. The FMA is always the relevant source which tells us what mode the flight management and guidance system is using.

      Gute Frage! Der Kreis entstammt der RADIAL FIX INFO Funktion in der MCDU, die wir nutzen um zum Beispiel die MSA oder andere Bereiche, die wichtig im An- und Abflug sind, darzustellen. Im Anflug hier hatten wir 2 Kreise dargestellt. Der äußere Kreis ist der 25 NM Kreis für die MSA und der kleine Kreis ist ein 4 NM Kreis als Basis für einen möglichen Anflug nach Sicht.

      I do not know which video you are talking about. You definitely can not be talking about the Rovaniemi video. The landing in the video was very normal. Other viewers rated it as nice landing or so. I agree to that. Most important is the length of the flare. The touchdown was not really hard and at about 300 to 400 meters from the threshold. This alltogether makes it a picture perfect landing.

      @@sukru8773 This is far away from a hard landing. Your crash landing comment is outrageous and inappropriate. It was not the smoothest touchdown, but it was the perfect touchdown for the weather. We fly as safe as possible. During such weather conditions, you want to touchdown as early as possible because the runway condition may be different from the published values. During this weather, It would be a very bad idea to land very smooth at the end of the touchdown zone with a long flare.
