    I'm unashamedly an Epiphone man, and want to add that this focus on quality from JC, Cesar et al, has definitely impacted the product from that company thoroughly as well. Different plants, different processes and different expectations of course, but quality none the less. It's a great time to love guitars!

    Thank you for these videos. They have inspired me to actually attempt to strip a guitar from its clear coat, sand off the color and re stain and finish the instrument to my liking. I had to sell my Les Paul due to a severe injury and the weight of the guitar. 10 lbs became unbearable and Les Pauls should not sit idle, they need to be heard. I found a Epiphone Les Paul on Craigslist for $300 that was a little under 8lbs and had the 60s slim tapered neck. The perfect instrument to try this on. I gutted it, stripped it and watch many of your videos over and over to do this right. In the end, this guitar is beautiful to behold. I put Gibson’s pots in it, Duncan pickups and cut the top of the headstock off right under the epiphone logo. Re shaped the top with a file to look like the Gibson Crown. The question is, Can it compete with the real thing? In all honesty, NO! Lol. It sounds good, it plays very good, it has a nice feel to the neck even though it feels cheap compared to the real thing and it looks great. There is no substitute for the real thing and there never will be. Gibson Les Pauls have that magic tone that can’t be duplicated. These videos are fun and actually useful. Thank you for posting them.

    I play guitar, but also was a QA before I was a production manager. I wonder how you manage defect rates and balance that with production rates, while finding ways to have minimal or even no increases in defects as production rates increase. It's tricky and we would always have to keep customers happy, while not driving workers crazy or dragging down our output. Perfection is impossible, but we did find ways to improve production rates while also increasing quality (it came at the cost of paying higher wages, getting the best engineers and factory techs, and factory upgrades, but that was good business for us because it got more from who we had and attracted other good people from elsewhere). Not something a company will discuss in a video I guess -- not in an insider detail kind of way.

      Aquila Rossa , Gibson’s quality control is shoddy at best. This video alone shows workers using tools and methods incorrectly. Gibson is showcasing it instead of doing something to correct it.
      If you’re looking for PERFECT quality control in a high-production setting, look at PRS’ videos. Paul Reed Smith Guitars in Stevensville, Md USA is the pinnacle of a quality production instrument. Second would be Collings Guitars in TX.

    Everybody would love that improvement.

    man wen i made my guitar i had to sand steam remove whiskers and repeat a dozen times, but its important to get the oil to penetrate a needed distance as the coats build up then its scraped back down to the surface and polished with axle grease. theirs much more to it than that but i dont feel like typing it all lol. it leaves a very beautiful finish. and you can also do a few flash coats of amber nitro and clear and it will age like fine furniture has or like a 200k shotgun with a hand rubbed oil finish walnut stock!

    0:36 He makes it sound like orbital sanders are some cure all. You can botch a job very quickly if you don't know what you are doing with an orbital sander. They are quicker in the right hands with the right sander. I take my hat off to these people sanding all day, some wood dusts can be very irritating to throat and skin without the right PPE.
    I hope the premium price of a Gibson is represented in their pay rate.
    Consider how good the finish on budget guitars can be and how much those people must be getting payed as a percentage of the guitars price, shipped from overseas, duties and retail markup added.

    • @philloynes
      @philloynes 4 роки тому

      The premium price of Gibson is BECAUSE of the pay the USA staff get compared to some companies making theirs in the east. Also the quality is better and the components better.

    • @ExternalInputs
      @ExternalInputs 3 роки тому

      @@philloynes The price difference is more than just wages. Overheads like their factory, power, insurance for everything, including worker compensation in case of injury, and occupational health and safety add considerably to costs. The staff may earn more than their overseas counterparts but cost of living is higher in the USA too. If you're suggesting a guitar body sander gets a healthy income compared to other production line workers in the USA, I think you'd be disappointed.

  • @georgevanwin

    Quality control isn't what it should be. I bought a J200 from the biggest guitar retailing chain in the UK. They had 6 J200 Studio's. Three of them had the skunk stripes on the neck way off centre. The one I bought was the best of the group, and it is still a couple of millimetres off centre. I brought these guitars to the attention of the owner, he doesn't check new stock personally but he was gobsmacked to see how bad the quality control was. OK, it doesn't affect the playability of the instruments, but what it does do is call into question Gibson' s quality control. Further more, when I bought the guitar I also bought a Marshall acoustic amp to go with it. When I got it home and plugged it in I found it was crackling then stopped working altogether. I assumed that my cheap lead was the problem and replaced it. No dice! I then assumed that the problem lay with the £400 amp rather than the £2200 guitar. I took the amp back to the store, and they tested it and said there was no fault. That just left the guitar! I took that back, and they sent it to their out of store tech guy. He said it had a dry joint in the electrics. I got it back and it played ok for a couple of days, and then stopped working again. I eventually took it to a good friend of mine, who was a pro musician and techie. We took it apart and found the problem was a faulty output jack. We re-wired it ourselves and the guitar has been fine ever since.Another example of Gibson's crappy quality control!

    ...Sitting here watching your employees using their sanders incorrectly, and applying AND removing filler incorrectly. It just makes my brain hurt knowing that one, they haven’t been trained properly, or two, they simply refuse to follow protocol and have decided they’re going to do it their way regardless of what they’re taught. THAT’S why your guitars suffer from the worst quality control among the top manufacturers. Fix yer people.
