- You can’t think of Nashville without thinking of music. Some of the greats have called Music City, USA, their home: Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, and Gibson. Since 1975 Gibson has been manufacturing instruments in Nashville. In this episode of The Scene, host Mark Agnesi is back in Music City to take us on a tour of the Gibson USA factory, where some of the world’s finest stringed instruments are made.
Mark joins Master Luthier Jim DeCola as he walks us through the factory where electric solid body and hollowbody guitars are produced every day. Watch to follow the process and see the hard work and skill that goes into making each guitar, from belt sanding and hand rolling the necks to scraping the binding.

I just bought a new Les Paul special made in Nashville and I have to say the build quality is fantastic. Thanks to the skilled employees!
No matter how many of these Gibson Factory tours I watch (and I’ve seen quite a few), it always amazes me that the three Gibsons staring at me from across the room started life right there. I’ll probably never make it to Nashville, but they were there and made it to me!
I couldn’t recommend Nashville any more, man. You gots to go! It’s truly guitar heaven on earth!
Used to think the same way about my 2009 Triumph Street Triple R. Never been to England, probs never will but the bike emerged from there!
@Vito Spatafiore Cor blimey!
That's the place they forgot to fully stain the neck on my Les Paul and horrendously cut the nut! How Cool! Not trolling, btw, this really happened, lol.
@@chrisdigital what year?
Just so everybody knows, this guy is a badass! He was Randy Rhoades guitar tech, was the guy who designed Wolfgang for EVH, and can skateboard
Did not know.
@@Ghost_2366 it's improved over the last 3 years so yeah
Just so you know, the host is unwatchable and Gibson needs to dump this dude already. Did not watch.
@@metfan999 you should go to the garage and meet him. Cool dude
@@metfan999 That's your opinion, who cares if you watched or not, you left a comment so your still counted as video traffic. Smart guy aren't you.
7:28 "So there's a lot of great heritage here." lol!
Show this video to the guy that says that Gibson is just a name. I own many guitars before Gibson when finally i could afford to get my first Les Paul, i understood why the Guitar worth that price, is not even about sound, its about the feel when you get one in your hands is just amazing, for sure many brands are great too, but Gibson deserves its status and leadership.
I really like Jim he’s genuine, not trying to sell us product. Thanks for showing us around again Jim. Hope one day you can show me around. Keep up the good work
Haha the interviewer looks constantly worried, like he's perpetually recieving devestating news
2 weeks from log to an owner. Good job Mark Agnesi 🤘
No greater presenter than Mark Agnesi, GOTD, Every day. I have no particular allegiance to Gibson, but love what they're doing with these videos.
Really cool to see a tour of the factory. I couldn't help but to chuckle at the fact that the workers had to have barriers between them and had to wear masks, but these guys doing the video aren't wearing any protection and not even two feet apart the entire time. You jokesters, you! :D
I thought the same exact thing. Rules for thee...
Boy Mark, you've come a long way. And what better than to now be the spokes person for Gibson. My grandfather played a Gibson back in the forties and fifties in Los Angeles. That was one fond memory my mother had of her father.
I own four Les Pauls and they are thee absolute BEST guitars I’ve ever played!
I've got two Les Paul Standard 60's, and as a players guitar, they're every bit as good as a custom shop. I have a R9, and sure, it looks more vintage, but the guitar I reach for day to day is my USA. Awesome guitars.
Spot on Rod. 2013 Traditional here, I can't really imagine how much more of a Les Paul it can really be from a feel- performance - function standpoint -outside of attaining that perfect 50s sunburst finish and vintage patina.
Bought one in Nashville at the Gibson Garage last year. Unburst and love it through and through...nothing wrong with that guitar at all. Not one flaw.
Loved Gibsons since I first played a Les Paul Custom in 1979.I love this video too.Brill tone brill guitars.
I can't imagine how good it smells in there with the laquor, sanding, painting, glue.
I'm awaiting delivery of my first Gibson and I'm pretty excited, it's been a long wait.
Awesome! Totally dig the geek out of the manufacturing process. So interesting!
I got to work with Stanley, the man working on the guitars. He's such a character! Loves coffee like Louisiana mud. Highly skilled and very kind about informing newcomers.
Great show...I love these peek under the hood videos.
There are plenty of great guitars out there’s something extra special about a Gibson.
I visited this factory in 2011 and 2014 and it was pretty cool to see what goes on. I was lucky enough to buy a white explorer from the training room upstairs on my first trip. I remember begging to have them let me toss one in the wood chipper and we also learned to scrape binding. My second trip was to learn about the Firebird X but that didn't go over so well lol
Got a tour from Jim at the factory this week it’s amazing how much work and passion is put into these guitars. Proud to be an owner of the product and Gibson is an amazing family oriented company.
Com’on. I can’t afford another Gibson. I watch these videos and listen to you or Jim speak and it gives me GAS!!
Great video! I love my Gibson Les Paul Trad Pro V Satin Iced Tea!! Classic Les Paul sound and much more with the coil split and coil tap!
Another fine video from the people at Gibson. I really enjoy these. (and I don't even have a Gibson). Thanks for doing this series
When they were talking about the final, quality control, inspection, I wanted to scream. A few months ago, I bought my 2nd LP. It is a lefthanded, LP Tribute. I love absolutely love the guitar, but it needed some pretty major work to become the player that it now is. Sure enough, in the case, there was a picture of the guitar on the work bench..along with the inspection check list.....which said that it passed its inspection. However, there were issues and the inspection obviously hadn't been thoroughly done. What was the biggest issue, you might ask? I'll tell you....the freaking nut was barely cut. It was almost like there someon tried to cut it with dental floss and gave up. The strings were resting on top of the nut..and it almost looked like they put a right handed nut on it..but gave up part way through cutting it. Regardless, I love the guitar...but I had to put a few hours of work into it. Gibson..I want a present!
I’m glad you brought this up here so they can read it. The quality of these instruments has just suffered so much in the last few years. My Les Paul Studio (2017) had 2 fret endings that cut me and I considered myself lucky after researching what’s been happening with Gibson.
In the last couple years of going to my local Guitar Center I’ve run into major problems with their Gibsons. One SG had a screw sticking out of the strap lock hole which was broken. An Explorer a busted pick up selector. The clerk said they came that way and shame on Guitar Center for keeping them on the floor at full price.
@@michaelsnydermusic that’s a Guitar Center issue. They obviously take zero pride in their stores it’s like being in a smelly shopping mall. Gibson has its faults but they deserve better retailers than GC.
@@dahliafiend it’s both.
So this is where my future guitar will come from? Nice
Very nice to see a current video! Keep up the good job.
You can really hear the passion in Jim's voice for the brand and for guitars in general. I'm a brand-fan of Epiphone by choice, but it's always amazing to see what the parent company's production process is like, awesome!!!
I really love Fender!! ...But I was and will always be a Gibson-Guy! Nothing like a Gibson.
Works of art that create music and inspire others. What a way to start the day? I love the craft that Jim and Mark talk about that expresses a way of life. Wish I were closer to Nashville and could see where my LP began life! Thank you both for the journey !!
Thank you, really enjoyed the video!
great video! have loved having my 2020 les paul standard. sounds amazing in the studio !
Gibson - my dream place to work.
I did and believe me, it's not...
Love the factory tours.
Had the amazing honor in 2019 of taking THE tour! Thank you Gibson for making the greatest guitars in the world. Honored to be part of the family 💙
I like some of the modern style Les Paul's, but honestly I think the way the Kramer guitar stuff has come along is absolutely amazing!
got my first Gibson les paul standard in cherry burst a 2021 year and what a great guitar it sings like an angel
Seems like a very subtle "call to work" video ...
Another awesome video! Made my evening 💪
I had a great tour of the factory in 1994 during the 100th anniversary. I've recently purchased two Nashville made ES-335's. They look, feel, and sound great!
hope the 20 year employee guitars get something on them that says 20 years ... 20 years is a real achievement these days
wow would love to visit the factory
Great video, thanks.
looks like an awesome spot to spend the day!
I ❤️ seeing the Gibson factory makes me happy
As a HUGE Gibson fan, this was an awesome video to see so I know what all goes into the guitars I own! Keep em coming!
More forward thinking at Gibson!! Thanks for making these Mark!!
Beautiful 🤩
I love my Gibson ES-355, CA Country Gentleman, and my les Paul custom. Truly the only guitars that inspire me to play everyday and learn new things.
Mark, Jim or anyone else who's been to this Gibson Facility, when Mark is walking down the hallway in the intro, are the hallway wall panels a flamed maple veneer?
What a great look, great idea.
Really cool, and thank you, I enjoy these videos.
Nice, it's always fascinating to watch these videos. I have a house full of Lefty Gibsons. Also I spotted 2 on the carousel behind Mark. Keep up the good work.
I've been very lucky to get a tour of the Gibson Custom Shop! it's fun to see inside the U.S.A. Shop where I see everything is pretty much done the same way, just on a larger scale.
Awesome!
Hope one of these days I’ll be in that factory designing my new signature guitar!
My 60s Standard Les Paul i buyed this year is absolut perfect quality ! realy Gibson is on a new Level of quality, it is Custom Shop level - thx ! greatings from germany
When Gibson finally makes a Slash mdl LP that doesn’t weigh 14 pounds I’ll consider buying one
Would love to see a custom shop factory tour... Proud owner here of a '58 standard reissue sunrise tea burst LP 2016.
Wow !! it looks like Gibson are making guitars I ordered an ES-339 over 2 years ago, Nothing not even a date for a date, emailed the CEO James just to try and understand why I have waited over 2 years. He didn't even bother replying. Glad to see another factory tour from gibson TV, maybe one day the will remember how to make the ES guitars.
Lololool hey Nino, i ordered a studio 2 or 3 years ago but i'm still waiting too 😄😄😄🦧🧠🪓
Love my 2019-2021 made Les Paul standards!
Cool vid
I saw a Buckethead Signature Les Paul! Woohoo!
Beautiful guitars always wanted a gold top ✌️
Cool video 😎
I would love to see the staff who keep the factory running: the industrial electricians, the line mechanics, and the carpenters who build the bin racks.
Guitar builders are the rock stars; the maintenance crews are the roadies.
(:
I was offered a job there doing maintenance but it was 3rd shift which I hate so I turned it down. I did get a friend on there who was a builder.
Awesome
Cool! 😎
How is that guy spraying nitro without a proper respirator?
Who cares!
Jim is the best!
I have to visit that place
I LOVE Gibson guitars!! I have 3 Les Pauls and hope someday to add an R9 burst to my collection! I have USA made PRS and Fenders too, but NOTHING compares to a Les Paul!!
Just bought a faded 50s les paul. Sounds like all of your favorite classic rock songs. 8lbs 7 ounces..non weight relief.
My 2008 gibson explorer was made here :)
Would love to work there!
Hey Mark. I'm an artist and a drummer. I've welded for the past 25 years for the Dept. Of Defense for my job and I hate it. Haha! I really do.. But.. Could I work at the Gibson Factory in Nashville? It's time for a change. And at night I will play drums for anyone who needs someone who's not afraid to Dunk the Funk! 😁🤘 or rock the jock or jazz the spazz or whoever will let me play!! Edit: I could weld if you really need me to! 👍
It's incredible that I live in the ass of the world and my 3 Gibsons came from that factory traveling thousands of miles and are still my favorite guitars (and the only ones that I've kept since I started playing). The only bad things about current day Gibsons is that the QC needs to be improved even more and that there are not enough silverbursts to choose from (I just love silverbursts since I got my Thunderhorse explorer 11 years ago)
That explains alot
I love Gibson guitar 🎸
30 years playing and never owned a Gibson. Never found the one for me. I’m ok if it doesn’t happen, I do admit some LPs are the prettiest guitars ever made.
Guy is spraying lacquer with only a dust mask on!? Wow.
Love it man. Hard work much respect to those cats. Gidson has gotten a bad wrap in the last few years but honestly, nothing like a Les Paul. Fing iconic and certainly stands the test of time. Cheers!
Try a Tokai LS80 from the 70s . Well , you can thank me later ...
The Gibson USA Factory please take me in I work for no money only for food and accommodation just to be in Heaven
Gibson please make more metallic finished les pauls! Love you
Gibson Por Vida!
I happened to work in Kalamazoo so I “toured” that facility because I own a Gibson that was made there.
Would be good for some of these peeps to check out factories in Indonesia so they can learn how to have better build quality
Absolutely 👌👍
A minimum of.... 2 months.
I don't feel it should be neccessary to take a chisel to the tenon to make it fit the body, it's CNC'd after all, or is it? At the very least it should be way less than 1mm of material needed to be removed, not the big hunk of wood we see here 4:04.
I've also seen a side view of the inside of a Les Paul, it shows the neck tenon having a bow so it doesn't make contact at the front and back on the bottom, if both the tenon and pocket are CNC'd why so much adjustment?
I never get tired of watching the factory scenes. It’s like I’m watching wood and art having sex, with a bunch of people joining in and then boom a guitar pops out at the other end.
5:00 mins in 6th guitar on rack on right. is it a Fire bird in black?
I've never wanted to work in a factory till now
Would be cool to see a lefty being built in factory, and how it’s different/harder compared to the standard right handed guitars.
0:44 Mark how the fudge are those guitars attached to the wall? And who else can name almost every model hanging? 😃
Love my Gibsons. Love this video. Someone PLEASE get that man in the spray booth a proper respirator. That flimsy little disposable mask is NOT the right tool for the job.
So when are you going to ship some new guitars to the stores?
Why are there no Gibson Les Paul Tribute models available to purchase in authorized Gibson retail stores???
You know what amazes me is that any time one of these UA-cam people puts a foot in the Gibson factory they GIVE them a FREE Les Paul. I've paid for at least nine Gibson guitars and never even given a sticker.
They forgot to mention; all guitars on that hanger conveyor pass through Joe Bonamassa’s living room. 😂
Maybe work on the QC part??
