  • "Rare opportunity", a massively overused phrase in UK real estate BUT, this really is a unique, rare and exciting chance to own a piece of history. A medieval family house, and the Hastings home of Sir Quentin Blake between 1972 & 2022.

Having owned a house on the West Hill many years ago, I know this property well. The current owners deserve congratulating for such a sympathetic restoration yet also modernisation.
Have lived all across the South East and now split time with family in the Cotswolds as well, but our decade in Hastings remains our fondest and we revisit every year. There has always been a thriving arts and events community, international chess congress, a beach launched fishing fleet using eco-nets, theatre within walking distance, the usual big name stores yet lanes with unique little shops, plenty of choice for dining out or having a tipple, good station for commuting. beautiful nearby towns and villages to visit. Magical place to raise children, retire to the coast or simply have everything on your doorstep on days off from work. This really is a unique opportunity to acquire a slice of history and wonderful lifestyle.

Google says lower ceilings helped to efficiently heat the rooms by fireplaces. I always thought that it was because people were shorter back then😂

People then were much smaller and lived much shorter lives . I think living till 40 was considered a long life. This was due to lack of sanitary living conditions and the food or lack of it that most people had access to.

Gorgeous - love the simplicity of the renovation. Looks like part of it exists separately next door to the left from the street? Wonder if that has had the same care taken given the party wall. I actually spent a night in the Piece of Cheese house across the street back in the 80s, a friend of my housemates owned it, she was an interior designer. It used to be a coffin makers? Lovely house and can feel the history in every beam :)

I can feel, the atmosphere, the peace, the serenity through the screen. I did once have a cottage from the 1500's that originated as a little Inn named The Eagle', had the same. Once inside you were transported into another realm of existence......so tranquil, peaceful. The building held and cosseted you and the weekends seemed to last days, for sure was a time warp 😁. The owners have a done a wonderful job of restoration and I hope future caretakers take care in maintenance. I have seen too many beautiful historic homes where young people have moved in, ripped the soul out of the house and created a blank heartless void of chrome, glass and industrial metal beams, and tiled floors. Is sacrilage and should not be allowed. If they want ultra modern, they should buy or build an ultra modern space. I reckon the time loop in these buildings is shut off or evaporates once they start ripping out the interior.nso very, very sad, asconce gone, us gone for good.

    • @juliebrooke6099
      @juliebrooke6099 Місяць тому +1

If you buy the freehold you buy both the house and the land it’s built on plus any gardens and driveways. Most houses are freehold. The alternative is leasehold which usually applies to flats (apartments). In leasehold you only buy the use of the property for a set period, typically 999 years or 125 years. A freeholder owns the land and can charge an annual ground rent, and the building which they will charge you to maintain the outside. If the lease is getting short you can pay the freeholder to extend it. There are plans to abolish leasehold.

So much history but I'd hit my head on something every 5 minutes, it feels so cramped.
After all that work one wonders why the current occupants no longer want to live there ...

They are down sizing and splitting their time between a smaller place locally and in London. Thanks for watching, Simon

Do they just get the furniture in the home by the windows? No one is moving a dresser up those stairs!

@@outoftheforest7652 furniture could be included. This very much depends on the sort of offer they receive. 👍

Think about how many times the house has been sold.

I wish all the brick and original woodwork hadn't been painted. I understand someone wanted to make the room feel lighter, but still sad 😔

Why don't you ever state the asking price? Would save the viewer a lot of wondering.

He said it whilst filming on the train, £950,000. Those things on the side of your head aren't just for decoration, you know.

Love love the house and its history. I would not live there though, it is a moneypit. And to many rooms and corners collecting dust.

Beautiful yes. Historic yes. But, I have to say, not a very safe home. If you are upstairs and fire breaks downstairs, you're done for. No escapes, many windows covered by metal grates.
