Crowd was chirping at TSJ, he had just been fouled after a transition fast break and got the foul call He looked at the fan, gave him that “jibber jabber” hand movement thing and says “keep talking”. Sank the shot. The very next possession-TSJ steals a pass and throws down a dunk, looks over at the opposing fan and winks.

    You guys did a much better job covering this than any of the "national" media. I'll name names. Gary Parrish, Rob Dauster for two.
    A bit of nuance that I've only seen Illinois media cover regarding Underwood playing him after the Temporary Restraining Order was issued. He had NO CHOICE of whether or not to play Shannon for non basketball reasons. He would have been in Contempt of Court for disobeying the TRO which reinstated Shannon with full student and athletic activities.
    Again, you guys did a good job of covering this story which was traumatic for all. You should take pride in that.

    • @findlisa
      @findlisa 11 днів тому

      Not true. Go back and read the 38-page ruling. Or, if that is too long for you, read its 2-page conclusion. Lawless's injunction didn't require Underwood to play Shannon. She required the University lift Shannon's suspension and not suspend him again (or worse) without giving him due process, but Lawless left the choice of how to do that up to the University.
      Part of what Parrish did was blame the University, but I believe Parrish wrongly put it more on Underwood than made sense. Think about it. Is the University going to have their response to a high-profile court ruling be decided by the men's head basketball coach? Of course not. They also aren't going to ask the same AD, Josh Whitman, who just lost them that civil suit (due his policy and decision making) decide how to address the ruling. It was already higher than the DIA and involving the university chancellor and/or the university president working together with the university's legal team. Ultimately, U of I President Timothy Killeen bore responsibility for the University's choice of how to address the ruling. It was his choice to let Shannon continuing to play with no federal appeal and no accelerated investigation. Pres. Killeen decided the policy, based on consultation with his legal team, that Shannon would be treated as any other member of the basketball team. So, it was neither Lawless's ruling nor Underwood's choice, but rather Killeen's policy that allowed Shannon to play.

    • @charlessmith4242
      @charlessmith4242 11 днів тому

      @@findlisa * What do you think TSJ would have done, if after being reinstated, he would not have been allowed to play? He would of sued Underwood, Whitman, and the U. of I. TSJ was not some third string player that could be hidden on the bench. Illinois was caught between a rock and a hard place. They had to play him or face more litigation, especially in light of TSJ's recent exoneration.

    • @findlisa5
      @findlisa5 6 днів тому

      @@charlessmith4242 I agree with part of what you say here Charles. Shannon and his legal team certainly would have fought any U of I action that inhibited him from playing. But I don't agree with your conclusion that the University "had to play him", since even Judge Lawless left door open in several ways that they could lawfully suspended him or worse.
      Here's a list of those ways: (1) An accelerated investigation by the DIA that afforded Shannon more due process than AD Whitman's original policy had, like allowing Shannon or others to testify directly to the panel, releasing the names of those on the panel, etc. Whitman's policy never allowed for those things. (2) An accelerated OSCR investigation. The University did open an OSCR investigation on 1/8/2024, but it seemed to progress slowly, maybe since the U of I wanted it that way. At standard pace, it was expected to be concluded in 60 days, but there were options for extensions, so it had to be accelerated or else it couldn't have been concluded in time enough to matter. (3) a victory for the University in an appeal to Lawless's ruling, or (4) other possibilities related to these options or to the criminal case.
      So, yes, in the short term, Shannon probably would have played based partly on the injunction and since all of those options require some amount of time (weeks to a month or more, even when accelerated). But, no, when University President Timothy Killeen decided NOT to fight the federal court ruling and to issue the policy statement that dictated that Shannon must be treated like any other player and to make no immediate changes to DIA policy and slow-roll the OSCR investigation, then it meant President Killeen initiated a major change in DIA policy related to sexual offenses. It meant that AD Whitman's policy on zero tolerance (yes, what he preached to everyone about on 12/28) was over, and University had established a new lower-than-ever standard. If you are a student athlete who isn't yet convicted of a sex-related criminal charge and if you earn enough NIL money, then you can continue to represent the University of Illinois.

    Great video! Only thing I I’ll mention here is that Underwood did not have a choice to play Shannon. He had to return to his status before the charges were filed. Underwood likely plays him regardless of the injunction wording, in my opinion.
    You guys covered this better than 99.98% of the “media,” if not everyone that was not Illini specific.
    It’s a travesty that it happened at all. It’s a travesty that no one has printed a retraction or commented on it whatsoever.
    The silence is telling.

    • @findlisa
      @findlisa 11 днів тому

      True for Underwood, but not true for the University of Illinois as a whole. Judge Lawless's ruling was based on the fact than Shannon wasn't afforded due process regarding his suspension by AD Josh Whitman and the 3-person DIA panel. Lawless clarified that that had Shannon been afforded due process in a manner similar to that of an OSCR investigation, then he could have been lawfully suspended or worse.
      University of Illinois President Timothy Killeen bears ultimate responsibility for how this was handled. A university spokesman issued a statement on how the University would respond to the injunction. In truth, the University had options to both fight the injunction (in a federal appeals court) or, in a number of ways, to comport with it. For example, one option they must have considered was modifying the DIA policy to comport with Lawless's ruling, such that Shannon could still be investigated in an accelerated manner that AD Josh Whitman claimed was essential on 12/28. Again, ultimately, University President Timothy Killeen bore that responsibility. In short, President Killeen set a new lower-than-ever standard concerning the conduct of University of Illinois student athletes and the university which they represent.

    As a retired professor/attorney, I think outrage against the prosecution in this case is deserved. Finds the guy she accuses, after drinks, of course, no DNA, no evidence of any penetration (digital even) and a man’s life nearly destroyed. This was over-charged, with not actions taken by a truly quality prosecutor (in my experience, the best do this) would have said their was not sufficient evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. It, as a prosecutor, I believed there was insufficient evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, I SHOULD NOT RISK SEEKING THAT VERDICT, especially when an 18-year old has had several drinks, is guided & advised by a girl friend & others, and the defendant is far too often the easy target: a black male (one somewhat shy, with absolutely no character failures ever reported or suspected. I think the male prosecutor in particular, who should not have been allowed to even argue that “he is a rich, privileged athlete, at the top of the world” so find him guilty. Obviously, I paraphrased, but the comment made SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ALLOWED, as it called for pure prejudice against athletes. I believe Terrence Shannon has already suffered financial loss and other damages that are irreparable. He could sue, but I doubt there are assets in her name sufficient to compensate a great kid. Even in California, I would not expect a court to allow such railroading.

    In all honesty, protecting the “alleged victim” is crazy. Like sure don’t promote ppl to harass her but giving her any sympathy for almost ruining this kid’s life is nasty work.
    Cuz the trolling Shannon received is the same thing… but I get it. It’s not good for future S/A victims wanting to come forward. I just really believe something has to be done for falsely accusing someone of this heinous act. This guy has to deal with this for the rest of his life potentially still… and tbh , she is wrong and the consequences of her doing this is still never gonna reach the point of what Shannon affect will be.

    At 15:36, Greg says, "That's an icky part of this." Not just icky, but illegal. Those actions, some of which Greg alluded to just before, like outing her or her friend, bashing her or her friend, making death threats against both women and those who supported them, can be prosecuted. It will be at the discretion of prosecutors to decide which of those crimes will be prosecuted.

    To anyone who says the alleged victim (yes, she is still an alleged victim) should be sent to jail or punished harshly in some other way, we have no evidence that she committed any crime or lied about being assaulted. So just like TSJ deserved (but didnt always get) the benefit of innocence until guilty, so does the alleged victim. Otherwise, what you are saying is that we should tell any victim of rape that if the alleged rapist is found not guilty, they should go to jail.

      Well said. The guys who want to illegally out and bash and threaten the alleged victim (or lawyers who fought on her behalf) are taking things to a hellish low. Is that what guys think is appropriate for people who aren't successful in pressing charges against an alleged perpetrator of sex crimes? BTW, most people that go through that stuff are not lying, even when their cases are dropped, or when their cases end, as Shannon's did, in acquittal. Unlike Cart said near the beginning of this video, the verdict in Shannon's case didn't mean the woman's allegations were false. Instead, the verdict just meant that Shannon was NOT guilty of the two charges he faced.

    At 4:56, Greg says "Holy Shit! He went and drove himself to turn himself in." Did he, Greg? You mean in that car owned by the DIA and accompanied by multiple DIA staff members according to AD Josh Whitman on 12/28? Okay, I won't guarantee they never let him touch the wheel, but I doubt he did much driving. Keep in mind, their argument was that he can only go to the football game on 9/9/2023, if he doesn't do ANY driving, because of his falling-asleep-at the-wheel incident in Florida. Now Greg, seemingly, has Shannon driving 13 hours round-trip to Lawrence and back. I assure you, that didn't happen.

    Stop letting people who falsely accuse get away with doing this crap. Is this man would’ve went to jail for 20 years and lost his career who is responsible for that? Stop putting a Band-Aid on these mean two people.
