BYU being a one and done destination works because one year at a religious institution will be more tolerable to most. It will be a strength because with less distractions, it willbring more focus in preparing for the NBA draft with Kevin Young at the helm

Listen Ur comments about Coach Painter losing Catchings because coach refused to change his stance is so wrong. Coach made his stance long before Catchings ever came to enroll. I'm not knocking Catchings for leaving, although it could have been handled and discussed before his first day on campus. Painter has always been a straight shooter with recruits from day one. Besides Kanon wanted a guarantee that he would start from day one and Painter doesn't operate that way. He is the coach, a coach with integrity and no one player is bigger than the TEAM. Better to resolve this early than to have a disgruntled player and problems in the locker room

Mormons is a slang term for Latter-day Saints because they read the Book of Mormon. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints do their best to not use the slang term Mormon anymore.
Also, PS BYU going to the 1996 cotton bowl was bigger than this for the LDS faith the baptismal rate in 1997 was abnormally high.
The problem with the football team is there are no LDS HC’s in CFB that are elite or even good. Andy Reid of course is one of the GOAT’s but he ain’t coming to BYU. Unless BYU changes and hires a non LDS HC for football they won’t do a thing. 0 candidates.

“Mormons” was originally a derogatory nickname given to the early believers in the Book of Mormon. The Saints ended up embracing that nickname and went with it. However, there has been a recent push to use the full name of the Church: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “Latter-day Saints” is a shortened version of the full name, but the full name is preferred as it contains the name of Jesus Christ.

When Mark Pope left i thought BYU was going to be a insignificant team in the BIG 12. Now i think BYU will be very competitive, maybe even top 3 team in BIG 12. Kevin Young and his group has done so much in such little time. It's amazing!

Also, in general Mormon is an umbrella term that includes all the religious groups who follow the Book of Mormon. Latter-day Saints are the biggest group by far, but there are other small groups who kinda do their own thing. That’s why Latter-Day Saints try to avoid being called Mormons, cause we don’t really want to be associated with some of those groups (like the polygamist crazies)

To answer the "Mormon and Latter-Day Saint" question, it is different terms for the same thing. The official name of the church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Members are commonly referred to as "Mormons" due the Book of Mormon, a book of scripture that we believe is a companion to the Bible.

There is little difference between LDS and Mormons. Mormonism is a religion that is an umbrella to many different sects under it. LDS is one of those sects that is Mormon. So they are really the same thing. Its just that the people of the Mormonn/LDS religion dont like to be called Mormons any more. They used to but not any more.

Just FYI, and I'm old so I'm not sure how it's done now, but all students (LDS and non LDS) are required to get an eclesiatical endorsement from clergy of a Faith. I believe they are supposed to attend Church somewhere to gain that endorsement, but I'm not sure how stickler they are about regular attendance... especially lately. But there are a lot of bros and other non-members who are people of faith, so you never know...

What are these guys talking about? I just watched an interview with Catchings. He said BYU didn’t promise him anything but a chance to compete. He said BYU offers the best player development program in the country and it’s now the best place in America to prepare for the NBA.
I promise you that’s exactly what paint told him he had at Purdue but he knew he wouldn’t have as good a chance to play 20+ min on a team with Tkr, Heide, Colvin, and furst. Could he have started? Maybe, but he is way more likely to start and play significant minutes at byu since he wants a 1 & done which he should have realized earlier.

And having an NBA coach just coming from that league put him over the top

I think there’s very little chance he’s a one and done. He’s not that mature physically. I think he projects more as a 2 or 3 and done guy.
And yes, he will get guaranteed PT, but at the expense of being seen as a quitter, sulker, one who can handle adversity or having to fight for a role. These aren’t attributes the NBA will put up with unless he’s absolutely amazing.
And also, you guys either didn’t see or ignored the reports that Kanon tried to take back his decommit the next day and Paint was over it bc it was the 3rd or 4th time he’d acted like that.
So, yes, a loss in the short term, but a massive W for Purdue in the long-term bc Paint’s word is oak. Players can trust him and he just took a team to the Natty game. So if Purdue had to miss out to maintain that, I think Purdue fans are totally ok with it.

If he was a 6’2 guard probably not gonna be one and done. Look at Cody Williams at Colorado. He wasn’t great but he has good upside at his size. Catchings probably will do no worse as a freshman than Williams

Paint will always play the best guys and right now, a 21 year old Heide was projected to start over him to start the season. Maybe he'd beat him out end of the season, you just don't know. But if he was really going to be 1 and done, he'd be day 1 starter.
Remember, this is a high end 4 star and there are only 14 lottery spots where 1 and done guys usually go not to mention the burgeoning international talent. Even the recruiting analysts saw him closer to 40 than 10.
In defense of Pope, the boosters (alex smith) really didn't truly come out of the woodwork until they hired Kevin Young. Smith is the reason Kevin Young got such a sweet deal to begin with. The church does not spend a cent of tithing money on BYU athletics, and this is the first year pay to play was even a thing anyway. I imagine the change helped get things moving, but Mark Pope would have had a solid team at BYU if he had stayed
Tim fanning is the reason why Catchings committed to BYU. BYU lost their coach, so you think their gonna drop off? BYU is a great school and has resources. We will see if they can keep recruiting like this,

They said they don’t know the last time people have been this excited to watch BYU, It’s easy… People haven’t been this excited since Jimmer’s PoY campaign! Jimmer had BYU on Sports Center every time they played. That year was so fun.

Ok. . . settle down guys. If Kannon is as good as he thinks he his, then he should have had enough confidence in himself to stay and out complete the other players on the team to earn time at Purdue as a freshmen.
If he is that good, he would not have been put in "shackles", rode the bench, or made to wait in line at Harry's. The only way that would have happened is if the other players were actually better / more ready, and redshirting or limited minutes would have been best for the team and his development as a player and as a person.
Look, it really sucks that he left. . .and yeah. . .it would have been great to see what he could have done here. But in the end it looks like it wasn't a good fit for him or us. Players who work hard, earn their minutes, are humble, and ever grateful become legends at Purdue; even the players who aren't 2 time national players of the year. I'm never going to fault Kannon for wanting to follow his dreams on his timeline. I truly hope he achieves them.
I'm only saying that I'm reasonably confident that he would have become a better player, teammate, and person had he stayed and competed at Purdue.
I'm a Purdue fan, but it is just a fact that Painter's method did cost them Catchings. Yeah, that sucks here, but I'm still not sure if it is bad thing long term.
It is frustrating that literally nothing changed from the Purdue side, this is how Painter has always operated - it should not have been a surprise to Catchings.

You don't sacrifice your coaching philosophy for one player. Painter has had plenty of success before Kanon and will have plenty of success after him. They'll still be very good this year

Also BYUs coach just came from being the top assistant in the NBA and is proven in player development. That put Catchings over the top .

What a random couple teams to compare to BYU. And outside of this last recruiting class, Rutgers hasn't done anything in about ever. So if you're fine with projecting just off of recruiting hype (which you clearly are), then BYU is a top 25 team.

@@johnblue2270 Catchings is a bit much, but Demin has absolutely every right to be brought up in the same conversation as Harper and Bailey. Also, BYU returns most of their core group from last season that was ranked the better part of the year, Rutgers doesn't have the same kind of depth or experience. Not saying BYU will be better than Rutgers, cause it's all projecting how a bunch of freshmen adapt to the college game, but honestly it doesn't matter. I anticipate both teams will be top 25 caliber.
