Did you know- field peas are great for soil conditioning since they are high in Nitrogen. Let's talk about growing peas ya'll!

I invested in a pea sheller several years ago. Best investment ever. Growing up I used to always beg my grandmother, please let's take them to the sheller. She always responded, no it mashes them to much. When I got grown and started my own garden, I grew some of the family white peas and took them to a local sheller. I brought them by my grandmother's house and she said Ooo that's some pretty peas. I told her I tookem to the sheller. She just laughed because I always begged her to take them to the sheller...
Another great show! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I grew up eating black eye peas. They are very good dried and are shelf stable, but my favorite way of eating them is picked young and green and I always pick some immature pods for snapping which adds a great flavor to the peas.
Old goat is behind Mr Hoss in the corner on the middle shelf next to the tomatoes.
This year we planted red rippers and brown crowders.
Yes, he is
In Florida we always called the "cow peas or field peas" black eye peas. We also plant zipper peas and crowder peas. When I was very young 3 to 6 years old we lived in
Savannah ; this colored lady would come around with a cart selling vegetables (she shelled the peas as she pushed her cart) one of the peas she sold were called pigeon
peas , they were half the size of a black eye pea and were excellent. I haven't had or seen them since, by the way that was in the 1950's.
Pigeon peas are in a lot of the rice dishes here in Orlando at the mexican restaurants. They also sell them in cans at Publics
Love field peas and your selection. Thanks for all your hard work "Hoss"!
I loved learning about peas
our pleasure
I always plant my southern peas in the fall because production is so much better
This was a great talk. I learned a lot about peas getting stung up and other things I didn't know! The old goat is on the second shelf behind two big yummy tomatoes..on the side the nails are on.
Glad it was helpful!
My first year growing field peas here in southeast Ohio. I've got some purple hull pink eyed peas growing and plants are looking great. Cant wait to try them. Old goat hiding behind hoss and tomatoes
Yes, he is.
Great show. Saw the Ole goat, 2nd shelf on the left, behind Mr.Hoss, amongst the maters.
Correct, thanks Ron
Those zinnias are gorgeous! Zinnias are one of my favorites and since pollinators like them it’s a win-win! I planted cow peas for the first time this year.
The zipper peas are really good. I never ate a bad cowpea. Big Boy purple Hull, crowders, or red rippers, all go go great with corn bread! I get some in Arkansas every year, but I grow them here in Missouri (zone 4).
Hello from Jacksonville, Florida! Another GREAT video! Field peas are my favorite to grow in the garden. My grandpa would grow a few of them (mainly zipper peas) every year when I was a kid and they were always my favorite to eat at our family meals! I found out a few years back that the local feed and seed store that I shop at each year (Standard Feed & Seed) was where he would get his seeds from. I am so glad that I found out that your company sells a variety of field peas too (including my favorite zipper peas). I've bought many of them from your company to give a try in my lil' backyard garden. Feels like I am carrying on a gardening tradition! Anywhooo.... I would say zipper peas are my favorite to grow even though they have given me a fit in the garden this year. I'm taking your advice & trying them again in the fall garden. As for Old Goat, I think he is hiding on the tomato shelf right behind Mr. Hoss. Have a GREAT 4th of July holiday! :)
Thanks Amy
LOVE YOUR KNOWLEGE .HAVE LEARNED ALOT
Thanks Glenda
I don't eat field peas, but I did plant a few as a cover crop a few days ago (they're up now, and more than I really expected), and am anticipating doing more with them along those lines in the future. I might grow them in a compost pile that has a lot of woody material in it as well. I confess, though, that I went the cheap route: I just grabbed a bag of blackeye peas in the dry bean section at the grocery store for this year's experimentation.
Mississippi Purplehull Peas have been by far the best field peas we have grown!! Of course, we bought the seeds from Hoss. ;) We are in Central Florida, Zone 9a. Usually, aphids and nematodes take them out but even with our lack of rain and an extreme heat wave these beauties just keep right on trucking. I love the purple flowers too! They are easy to shell and there are a lot of peas in each hull as well. Thank you, Hoss, for such a great selection of such great seeds! Oh my gosh, they taste great too. Can't believe I almost forgot to say that! LOL!
I may just have to plant me some field peas now. Old goat is on second shelf behind Greg’s head. Great show!
Thanks Cathy
Great show as always. Getting ready to plant a Buckwheat cover crop ahead of our fall Lady Cream peas. Appreciate the info on pests and disease. BTW..the Old Goat is behind Hoss's left shoulder on the middle shelf behind the tomato.
yes he is
Another great episode you two. I don't know how the old goat could see anything hiding behind Gregs head like that. Also OSHA regulations say you need a safety harness when climbing on the tomatoes.
Thanks for joining us tonight
@@gardeningwithhoss You're welcome
I’m in Northeast Oklahoma…high humidity and 90+ days from first of June until October usually. I grew up with what we called black eyed peas and purple hull peas. Love them. What we called black eyed peas are actually purple eyes. I want to find some orange lentil seeds because I’m gluten free and I buy a lot of them, and I’d rather grow them myself. I can make flour from the dried lentils.
Just placed yet another Hoss seed order! Great video. Bet that old goat is enjoying himself in the maters.
Thanks Susie
Alabama Purple Hull Peas are normally first or second every year.
Great show tonight as always. Didn’t know so many pea varieties, I like growing any type purple hull pea and black eye, that’s what my mom grew for years. Thanks for the show.
Old goat a bit hard to see, but, right behind Greg, middle shelf in the tomatoes and peppers.
Also, great wheel hoe tools, I have the high arch, the regular 2 wheel and just got the single wheel hoe, have also the planter, so I’m set for gardening more, with the push type tools when I retire, here in Arkansas, retirement is in 2 years.
I enjoy your videos, the tools and of course your seed. Next is to learn more about your drip tape.
Sounds great, thanks for joining us tonight Robert
Great show !
Second shelf behind greg i believe
Thanks
You got it!
Thank u for the info on the field peas....
Our pleasure!
The goat is behind Hoss’s left shoulder on the end of the second shelf!
Correct, thanks for joining us Thomas
I've never been much for Southern Peas, but honestly didn't know there were so many choices beyond black eyed peas and purple hull peas until tonight. I'm in zone 9a near the Texas Gulf Coast, so I think I am a week off your timeline. I will be adding some varieties with my fall crops to try for the first time. BTW, Old Goat is hiding behind Hoss' head. Thank you for sharing your knowlege. Love the show!
Thanks Diane
Love the top pick purple hulls. Made 8 bushels on 4 -75’ rows!
great job Linda
Great Show. I learned alot about peas. when I was growing up it was always beans. It was a litte hard to find the old goat but every now and then he would show up behind Greg on the second shelf. I little worried about my garden tomatoes are looking great and just pulled some sweet corn but going to be in the 100's next 11 days.
Good stuff
I was disappointed you didn’t mention Mississippi Purple Hull Peas-my favorite! Those white butter peas-I planted those a couple of years ago and they were quite good But I won’t plant them again. Even at maturity, the hull is rather small. I had to literally feel every hull on the bush every time I picked to determine if they were mature. They grow down in the bush and I just found them tootime consuming. And then, they’re hard to shell. Very good though! 😊
My favorite is the blackeye pea. I tried the pinkeye pea last year and they were all "stung up" from the leaf-footed bug and other stink bugs. Lost the whole crop. Back to the California Blackeye pea this year. Already enjoyed the first harvest with cornbread. I ordered a fresh packet from Hoss Tools, planted a row and got 100% germination. Will be succession planting again around mid July. Thanks for the planting dates.
Thanks for watching Sherald
Purple Hull and Black Eye are my favorites !
Hi,
Thanks for another great show. I believe the old goat is in with the tomatoes right behind Greg’s head.
Have a great weekend and Happy 4th of July!!
Same to you
The old goat is hiding in the tomatoes behind Mr. Hoss near some peppers. Have a great day!
Thanks Karen
Great show enjoyed it and very interesting. Packed with some knowledge and wisdom. Old goat behind Greg's head.
My Hossanators are very productive and large. They started out from seeds with 100% germination!
And they still impressing me with the size of fruit, numbers of fruit, taste of fruit, and them dog gone good mator sandwiches. Tonight we had BLHT....(bacon, lettuce and Hoss tomato) just wonderful.
Will grow them again. 21 ounce so far my biggest. May not win the contest but I am a winner with these.
I am coming to get some zipper pea seeds.
Thanks Danny
Another great garden show. Thank you very much for taking the time to show us all those pea varieties. I heard a Florida Urban Gardener say that, in the spirit of permaculture, having aphids all over your cowpeas is beneficial. They draw in the ladybugs for the next rotation crop that you grow. Lady bugs is one of the best beneficial predators. Just something to weigh and ponder on.
Aphids weren’t looking so good on my Mississippi Purple Hulls today!
Thanks for watching!
@@carolynfulton4060 Yeah, they never look good. Looks gross actually.
I've transplanted what I call blackeyed peas many times. our local feed store has a greenhouse and have them in spring. But I only set out 15-20 Back in the day helped grandma sew them and she just bought a bag at grocery store to plant. Also back when I worked long hrs and lazy Id just cook some dried ones in my pressure cooker and mix my fresh graden snaps with them and a pan cornbread.
Thanks for sharing!
Howdy Greg,
Got a question for you…I’m fixin to replace my chicken flock. The old girls are spent and it’s time for them to become dog food. While I am raising my new chicks I want to replenish my chicken yard with a good clover or ground cover while the chicken yard is empty. What I’m looking for is something I can broadcast and roll in. My chicken yard is approx 15,000 sq ft. Of course, I have Florida Sandy soil so I need something that will take to the Sandy soil. You got something like what I need?
TIA,
Hollis

The goat is in the ‘maters behind Mr. Hoss’s hat!
YES HE IS
Old goat behind Hoss' head behind tomato 🍅 🐐
Thanks Lisa
FOUND THE OLD GOAT - hiding in the tomatoes on the shelf behind Hoss' hat. Took a long time to find him, until 21:03 when Hoss was talking fertilizer.
Thanks for explaining what field peas are, I was mystified until your video!
Well done!
I might have a warped sense of humor. But laughed at your one star review story. Cowpeas? Field peas? My dad grew up in the south so black eyed peas for New Year’s is a must. I learned something new again from this video. I really only think of green peas when I think of peas. That is all we’ve grown in our small Colorado garden. Never heard of cowpeas. Well that darn goat has found his way into the corner on the shelf tucked behind a tomato tucked behind Mr Hoss’s head, which is tucked under a cool hat.
Thanks Barbara
Luved the show and loved Greg's hat, bought me one. Also could not find old goat.
he was hiding good this week, around the vicinity of Greg's hat
Here in east central Mississippi i grow top pick purple hull and zipper cream. I also grow a smaller pea my grandpaw had that runs a little with a white hull not real sure what it is but i grow it in his honor.
Gotta admit, I'm not a pea eater. Forgive me, I'm a Northern Yankee. But on a better note, I ordered some seeds from you last week on Thursday. I got them the following Monday. I ordered some seeds you didn't have in stock from another seller at the same time. I got them two days later and they were closer. If your seeds grow anywhere as fast as you ship them, they may be sprouted in the package already. 1st time customer and I do believe I'll be a lifetime customer. I have binge watched your videos over the last couple of weeks and have been convinced on drip irrigation. I bought everything I needed local and will be installing it tomorrow. Thank you for all the information you give us and most importantly, God Bless You!!!
Thanks for comments and support.
Love y'all... Would love a recipe/video of a vegetable soup mix that you pressure can? 🥰
Coming soon
Hi Greg looks like the old goat is enjoying some tomatoes behind you.
yes he is
My favorites to grow are Colossus and Big Red Ripper, but this year I am trying the top pick pink eye pea. I missed the name of that new grape or plum tomato.
hosstools.com/product/cream-of-the-crop-red-torch-f1-tomato/
I did not grow peas this year. I saw old goat while you had your hat off talking about how much you liked it for only $20. Old goat was all the way in the right corner of the middle shelf with the tomatoes.
correct
Our Hossinator tomatoes are doing great but nothing like that monster you have Greg! Still very satisfied with them and they are holding on in this heat so far. Back in my younger days my grandfather had a hobby retirement farm and he grew all sorts of peas. I remember every summer all the extended families sitting around in front of fans in the heat of summer shelling peas. My favorite back then was the "butter pea", but cream peas were a close 2nd. Now that I'm in my later years I look back fondly on those simple summer evenings and wish I could go back there again and spend just a little more time there. Peas are one of those "memory" foods for me! As to the Old Goat, that sucker is getting good at hiding behind Greg and avoiding the camera. He is in the very corner of the 2nd shelf behind Greg and his "Mission" hat (those hats are available on Amazon by the way).
Thanks David, great memories
Great show wonderful information old goat is directly behind hoss head
Yes, thanks for joining us
OMG I need to know how to order the Dixie Lee peas from y’all oh my y’all I’m 70 years old and disabled I try to grow them in containers I have to drag my chair and do the best I can thank you for doing what y’all are doing
just call customer service 229-769-3999 and they can take your order
The goat is on the middle shelf behind your mission hat lol
correct
Have never grown field peas .I have ordered some from you to give a try in zone 6 the old goat is on the middle shelf behind Greg's head
Thanks Tony
Crowder peas, cow peas all are delicious. Black eye is still my favorite. Old goat is in the pumpkins behind Greg.
Love my peas with snaps, have black-eyed, purple hull, and Creme peas. Old goat is on the shelf hiding in the peppers
Thanks for joining us tonight Kevin
Behind Greg
Almost didn't find the old goat, well hidden behind the tomatoes on the middle shelf right behind Greg's ticktock hat
yes, he is hiding well tonight
Red rippers are some of the best tasting peas I've ever grown
It is true what Greg said about canned foods not spoiling when power goes out and freezer stuff does if you don't turn on the generator or have solar backup. I love to have home canned food in my pantry too! I also think a freeze dryer is a worthwhile investment and I sure hope you two get a freeze dryer and share putting up produce in that. I bet you could work a deal with Harvest Right to give discount to your viewers and maybe they would discount you for your purchase of the freeze dryer if you show your journey of getting it and using it on some of your videos. Also -- is that the old goat behind Greg on middle shelf I see at 16:49 of this YT video?
Thanks Maggie
Zippers are best I’ve ever grown and eaten! They literally melt in your mouth!
One of our favorites
I just finished with my pink eye peas this past week. On my 20' double row I put up about 3 or 4 lbs. That old goat is getting good almost couldn't see him in the tomatoes behind Greg.
Thanks Jesse
The old goat is behind Greg,in back of the orange squash 🤗
Oops! He is behind the tomatoes 🤦🏼♀️
We can't submit pictures on the form anymore. I tried 5 times to put in our family garden but it didn't let us. Any ways we love watching you guys. We are growing hossinator, snapper, orange wellington and other tomatoes.
Will pass along.
Going to order those tomatoes seeds for next year!Question for Greg.We grow lots of produce to sell here in Fair Play SC . We grow on black plastic, irrigation under it. I want to grow corn next year in many of our plots the same way . How close should I plant my corn in my rows. Close or really close. Going to put down chicken manure for my fertilizer this fall! Love your Videos ! Thanks for all your help and know how! Have a great day!
This is from our corn growing guide. The link is included below
hosstools.com/corn-growing-guide/
Based on 6” seed spacing with 36” row spacing and 5 extra seeds per row to be on the safe side.
25 seeds/10 ft. row (3 rows)
75 seeds/10’x10′ Plot
750 seeds/1000 sq. ft.
This means you would need roughly 32,000 seeds of sweet corn per acre.
Row Spacing - 30 to 36 inches
Plant Spacing - 6 inches
Planting Depth - 1 inch
Sugar Ann peas are our favorite.
I see the old goat hiding in the peppers and tomatoes right behind Hoss’s “big ol’ jug head”. His words not mine 😂
Correct, thanks for joining us
We are planting the pink eye from you this year!
great, thanks for your support
Well I ordered zipper peas from y’all about a month ago . I was gonna plant them in mid August but you said your gonna plant yours in late July . Now I’m gonna plant mine in late July.
great
Planted White acre peas that I got by mistake so I said why not use them. So glad I did because they are doing great. Going to be planting Zippers soon. My question is how do you tell when they are ready to pick? Old goat is hiding behind the tomatoes but he was hard to see behind Mr. Greg new hat.
When they are completely filled out and easy to shell.
Iron clay peas gotta be double first cousins to field peas. Both good food plot fillers or dinner plate fillers.
I MAY BE WRONG BUT MADE MY OWN SOIL 1 TH SAND ,1TH PED AND 1TH COW MARURE IT SEEMS TO WORK FOR ME
Love the show as always do yall grow pinto beans? I'm thinking of growing some love good ol pinto beans and can't wait to plant the blackeyed peas thanks for all your tips and information 😊 have a blessed evening.
No, we have never grown those
I think I see old goat at 16:49 over Greg's shoulder on middle shelf tucked in above tomato. My UA-cam picture definition isn't very clear even when I increase the pixels so I'm not sure but that would be my guess.
correct
Love my snaps in my peas. I got a white pea that's been passed down through the family. The original pea is probably over a hundred years old from the original. It's so old no one remembers the variety of white pea it was...
that is awesome.
The old goat is in front of the pumpkin good video!
Thanks
I like every kind of pea but those english ones but then I have only tried (once) the store bought can version!😣 Maybe I should grow a few to try fresh. Psst. the old goat is on the shelf with the tomatoes and peppers (behind Greg)
you should try, there is no comparison
Behind Greg on tomato shelf.
Correct, thanks for joining us Pamela
Well that was good field pea info. I have grown red ripper and now have been growing the pink eyes, although I don’t think I have the top pick variety which I may have to switch over to hopefully they are the same Pea . For me my biggest pest is a aphids but neem does not work well, I have to go stronger .for the most part. You said that when planting you only put an organic fertilizer as a pre-plant, do you still use the inoculant as well or is that not necessary?
Also you stopped at zone 9 would Zone 10 be the same I’m guessing? Momma hoss should do a canning and recipe video for them.. thanks
We use the inoculant for English peas.
Lovely Zenas
Thanks
Greg,Can I plant silver Queen corn now, my early crop, I think, was planted too early. It didn't do so good.I live in N.W.Ms.
yes
Old goat is behind Greg on the tomato shelf.
yes he is
I’m going to order the zipper peas and try them along with the hossinator tomato for the fall. I’m zone 8a so should have plenty of time, right? The old goat is hiding behind Greg’s head on the second shelf.
yes, thanks for joining us Julie
The favorite crowder pea of my childhood was Colossus but I havnt been able to find them. I just moved back home to SC and started gardening again. Any ideas on where to find them?
We don’t have that. Just try searching on web.
My favorite pea out of all of'em is the ones in the bowl in front of me. How in the world can you have one particular favorite?
👍 I always liked purple hull peas. I remember sitting with big bowls at my grandma's shelling them watching the NASA astronaut moon landings. 🙂 My grandpa always did a good job growing all kinds of beans and peas and everything else in his garden. My grandma gave me a cookbook from her local area that had a recipe for purple hull pea jelly. Using the outside part not the peas. It was supposed to taste like grape jelly. Always wanted to try it. I don't know if I still have the cookbook, hopefully I do. Have you ever heard of that?
yes I have
HaHa, liking the Tick Tack hat
I'm in the same zone as yall in Alabama. Planting Zipper Creams as well. Probably toward end of July/1st of Aug. I'm planting 2- 30' double rows. I am going to plant a 10' row of Miss. Purple Hulls as well. Old goat behind Mr. Hoss on the shelf next to the tomatoes. How much of the Complete Organic Fertilizer do you think I should add preplant for that size or LFT?
Prior to planting, apply at the rate of 1.5 cups per 10 square feet. If you have a raised bed that is 4′ x 5′, you would need 3 cups for the entire bed.
Side-dress at half the rate (.75 cups per 10 square feet) 4 to 6 weeks after planting.
The old goat is behind Greg on the tomato shelf.
Correct
Is it too late to plant zinnias in Central Louisiana? I'm fixing to make my seed order for fall and spring.. Old Goat is behind Greg's hat hiding behind the tomatoes!!!✌🏻
Not at all
Two things - first, absolutely love White Acre Peas and Hoss Tools is one of the very few places I can find the seeds for them so thank you so much for that. Second, here's a corny joke for you - I heard WD40 was good for getting mice out of your garden. I tried it. It didn't work - BUT the mice have stopped squeaking. :)
good one, we will have to use that one
Mr hoss im in North Alabama do you think we have time to get another round of sweet corn in and it do well?
Yes, and it should do fine with proper irrigation and fertilization schedule.
What is the name of the hat Hoss is wearing? And where did he buy it?
Love the RBR shows!
Thanks Mission is name of hat
Zipper and texas cream are excellent. What are the small green peas? we call them field peas. Can I buy them?
below is a link to our field pea selection.

Again A Great Video , I Love what I have always heard of October Beans . What is the difference between horticulture beans and Cranberry beans ?? Can't find anything actually October Beans . Maybe another Video??😉😉
Cranberry bean and October Beans are slang terms. Horticulture beans is a type. You need to look for Topazio. This is the October bean

@@gardeningwithhoss Yeah that's what I keep getting is the Taylor Horticulture Beans . Thanks
thats Round up they spray with to keep the combine from clogging up they do the same with grains how is this possible in America ?
Is that old golfer on the 2nd shelf above the tray of peppers on top of a glass cylinder... 😮
nope
@@gardeningwithhoss I can't spot him this time... I think I need a new phone! 😂
Old goat is in the corner behind Hoss' new hat. My daddy used to grow what he called "clay" peas. Do these peas go by any other name?
We have iron clay peas
