    I have "grown" onions for years... and rarely if ever got a decent onion. Last year I listened to what Kevin and Greg said, and this year I got a lecture on don't you dare plant that many onions again. Their method works... I had beautiful large onions... only problem I had was I had hundreds of beautiful onions... and we were trapped at home due to covid and no one to share them with. So do your homework, pick our a couple or three varieties you want to grow... and plant you seed now... (if you are in the south). I planted mine yesterday night I believe it was.
    And yes... it's going to be a beautiful weekend here in the south... and hopefully it will dry up some here in North Florida so I can get out in the garden. I am so looking forward to a nice long fall!

    Great show guys, as always! Good info, especially about the day length! And that Ammonium Sulfate tip! Game changer! I've encountered a lot of that "square peg in the round hole" deal concerning day length. So many folks are not aware, and I'm glad you emphasized it. It goes for most of the garlics too! It's about time for me to start my yearly onion mantra........"I will space my onions better"......."I will keep my onions clean and weed free"......."I will fertilize and water as needed"..........etc. etc. etc. As with most of my gardening, I know what I should be doing, but I might be a little short on "execution" sometimes! :)

      On beans, not really. If the leaves don't look nice and green after they get going, I may side dress with more organic fertilizer or inject some 20-20-20 through the drip system.

    Using what yall have taught me about onions i grew a heck of a crop last year. More than i could eat or give away. so this year needs to have storage included. What onions do you recommend for long shelf life? The longer the better. I still have a couple Savannah sweets on the rack, they just started to push out new growth. zone 8

    This year will be my third attempt at growing onions and I’m so happy I saw this video. So just to recap….I live in Sacramento, CA. I have some intermediate day red onion seeds that I started August 1 and again on August 18(the first batch didn’t germinate as well as I wanted). So they should grow in the seed tray for 8-10 weeks and then be transplanted into my prepared garden bed. At transplant stage I should fertilize with a complete fertilizer. Then switch to ammonium sulfate fertilizer until bulbing starts. Questions: I fertilized the seed tray with fish emulsion….how often should I fertilize seed tray? And once they are transplanted in garden bed, how often should I fertilize? Thanks again for your great information!!

    I’m in zone 7B, extreme west Texas, about 30 miles from NM. Last October, 2022, I bought normal shirt day yellow onion bulbs, not sweet, and white onion bulbs, and planted them. From all my research, over wintering them here is the best, so that’s what I did. I can’t figure out what to do with the things now. They started to bolt on me the beginning of May, and temps, until this week in June, have not even been over 95, but certainly weren’t over 75 in May. I pulled the ones that did, and some aren’t even 2” around. The largest I think I had was 3” maybe, and that was just one. They are still in the ground, June 2023, the rest seem to be ok, only a few more bolted, but they aren’t flopping over, the bulbs aren’t coming out of the ground except maybe one or two, but even then, they are very small. They have had water, and were fertilized when I planted them. I’m getting ready to just pull them and call it a huge loss, but when they aren’t even flopping over, I assume they aren’t done growing. Your advise is more than welcomed. What happened?, or what didn’t happen, where are the mistakes made?

    Have you ever planted multisown onions in the garden? 5 to 6 seeds per cell. You pull some out earlier to use as green onions and let 2 or 3 grow out to be medium size onions at harvest.
    Charles Dowding did a complete start to finish video about it and got a pretty good harvest. I might try it this out with a dozen cells and compare it against a set of single planted onions. Thought it would make an interesting experiment.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 роки тому

      You could certainly plant more than one seed per cell and do it that way.

    Thanks for more expert onion info. Please clarify one important point. You said to stop fertilizing when the bulbing phase starts, but you didn't say whether to stop or continue watering at this same time. Important to know.
    Also, hearkening back to the recent sunflower show, coupled with Greg's microgreen venture; I currently grow Mammoth Grey Stripe sunflower, because it makes a large seed head, and dry these for microgreen sunflowers. I'm attempting to create a perpetual crop cycle. Will you, Greg, be working toward this end, too? I'm looking for the best sunflower for this purpose. The Black Oil makes a small seed head, and the squirrels usually get them early. Thanks for sharing your crop wisdom.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, keep watering during the bulbing phase. The sweetness of the onion is primarily determined by how much water it receives during this phase.

Might I suggest you insert a close-up still picture of the items you are featuring, or maybe a 2 camera system. Hello - My question is about which plants can be planted on the same row together utilizing the same type fertilizer when you are using the Hoss Fertilizer Injector and Drip Irrigation system. I have a small family garden and may have different plant types on a single row of drip line. I plan to put a cut off valve for each row on the main line but a single row may grow multiple type plants. Example: if I have onions that need ammonium sulfate, what other plant can use that same fertilizer. Thanks for all your help.

    An Onion timing question . . .
    I just placed an order with Dixondale for my Texas Legend onions. I order plants as all my seed trays are already in use with fall crop seedlings. I received an email saying that my ship date was changed to February as that was the recommended date for my area. I have never overwintered onions before and considered trying that this year. I am in zone 7B (Cleveland, TN). Since bulbing is triggered by day length, will my harvest be much quicker if I plant in November vs waiting until Feb. as Dixondale recommends?

    Good evening Travis and Greg. I live in Virginia zone 8A which variety of onions are best for my area. Also I grow in a 4' high raised bed due to back issues. How deep does my dirt need to be to grow onions. First year gardener and it will be my first time growing onions. Thanks in advance.

      Need to grow intermediate-day onions. If you go to the onions page on our site, you can filter just the intermediate-day varieties. Cultivate 3-4" deep and you should be fine.
