I grew up canning hundreds of qts of green beans every year, still do a ton, and Mama Hoss is RIGHT! There's no sense in cutting corners and risking giving botulism to your family! Love yalls show...especially corn sappin!

I start all my sweet potato slips myself because most of the time the ones in my kitchen volunteer sprouts so I just let them do their thing and then pot up the sprouts and let them develop in pots while it is still too cold to put them in the ground. I've been growing the Japanese sweet potato that has the reddish skin and antique white flesh for several years at my former homestead. I love that sweet potato, I think it tastes like roasted chestnuts. Years ago some that I had bought from Asian grocery store to eat had started sprouting so I rooted each sprout individually in small pots and kept up potting them until I finally decided to make a bed with a trellis and grow them not just for the root but also for the greens. I had watched AsianGarden2Table for years, she trellises hers; I decided to try her method and it is the way I continue to grow them and my other regular sweet potatoes such as the Beauregard. Up here at my new homestead in northwest Florida I have an archway over the ramp that goes up to my garden shed and I prepared a bed next to the trellis so my Japanese sweet potato can grow up the side of the trellis. I do that with my other sweet potato varieties and just dot them around my landscape in areas where there is a fence or I make a trellis for them. The greens are wonderful in salads as a hot weather green they are versatile because they can be stir fried or cooked like spinach or added to an omelet, the uses are many. The greens stay much cleaner growing on a trellis and I get two crops; the greens and the root-tuber.
Also want to mention difference in sweet potatoes and yams; they aren't even in the same family. Sweet potatoes are in the same family as Morning-Glories, Family: Convolvulaceae, Genus: Ipomoea. Whereas the true Yam is in the Family Dioscoreaceae, Genus dioscorea spp.

I grow my own slips. Just build a hot box and bury them and when the vines grow out, break them off at the potato and then cut off about a half inch from the bottom of the slip to get rid of any diseases that may be present and pull off the lower leaves so you got a long stem to stick in the ground...

We planned them in our black soil. 90 plus days later, OMG !!! The best tasting sweet potatoes I’ve ever had!!!! They grow well here. Thanks so much for the info, we’ve been growing them now since we heard about them with y’all and from Danny at Deep South Homestead. Best ever 😃

I bought a six pack of sweet potatoes at a local store and planted them in mid April . The vines grew 5-6 feet long and I trimmed them a little to keep them from completely taking over and I decided I would put them in water to see what would happen . Every single one of them grew roots and I planted them out last week and they’ve grown fast since then . Now I have about 40 plants . I never knew it was so easy to propagate them . I may even try to take a few cuttings this fall before I dig them and try to keep them over the winter in the house just in case we can’t get them next spring .

I plant all purple sweet potatoe slips from my own sweet taters(prior years potatoes) and plant in 15gal root pouch. I only fertilize prior to planting, then they act like a cover crop. Water only if needed. I harvest them in Oct and get huge potatoes. Zone 7B/6A border.. then I can them after they've cured. Yes use a pressure canner according to USDA recomendations. Blessings.

Congratulations on 200!! Best dadgum show on the internet or anywhere! Pretty sure I've seen them all, and enjoyed every one! Get em' Mama Hoss! I agree completely on pressure canning those beans! You need that 240-242 temp that's only attainable with a pressure canner. Period. Paragraph. End of story. No matter how long you boil water you ain't getting more than 212 degrees out of it! Do folks water bath green beans, sure, but it is just not recommended at all. Ok, I'm off the soapbox now too! Follow the rules folks, it's botulism you're dealing with here. Beautiful, beautiful sunflowers!! Ok, here's the skinny on those sweet taters vs. yams: Sweet potatoes belong to the morning glory family of plants, called the Convolvulaceae family. Yams belong to a different family, called Dioscoreaceae. For practical purposes, sweet taters are lighter, sweeter, fluffier. You won't get a very appetizing yam souffle without some serious help. Yams are drier, starchier, and denser. Yams are tubers, like taters, sweet potatoes are roots.

Ps on my UA-cam channel community page a homestead sales them with nice roots I got 40 from him he ships and they look great he has different varieties and his is inspected by that state I felt it was really important to get them into hands of people because you can eat the leaves too God bless
