    Hey guys! This week on Weekend Wankshop, we're going to be paying tribute to one of the greatest artist rock has ever seen, Chris Cornell. Many of you know him from his work with Soundgarden, but he also enjoyed success with numerous other bands like Audioslave, Temple of the Dog, and his solo career. He's absolutely one of Uncle Ben's favorite singers of all times, but i've always thought he was a SUPER underrated guitarist and riff writer! So today we are gonna learn some of my favorite riffs from my top 5 favorite songs on Superunknown, my favorite record of theirs! We're going to talk about how to play (and how to get your guitar into the crazy tunings used for) Spoonman, Black Hole Sun, the title track, Limo Wreck, and 4th of July.
    If you or anyone you know is wrestling with suicidal thoughts or depression, please use the vast resources the internet has to offer and GET HELP! There's so many places where anyone can get free anonymous help out there, i've included a few numbers and sites at the end of this video. If someone as godlike as Chris can wrestle with these kinda of issues, i think that completely validates it for mere mortals like us to have the same problems, too. GET HELP!
    Cheers everyone, thank you to Chris for all the amazing music.

    4th of july is probably my favorite guitar tone ever, just so simple but sludgy with a little weird timing thrown in. Great Album!

    Saw them on the "Louder Than Love" Tour and he was like this biblical looking god of a man, leaning out over the crowd seemingly 7 feet tall, melted my brain!

    You're already one of my heroes, but the ending of this video was really touching. I feel like too many people feel ashamed of their depression and such and just feel too ashamed to talk to anyone about it. I think it really does make a difference when people such as yourself tell them it's okay to seek help.

      was lucky enough to see them at the same festival...in april before he died. rip.. yeah they are both great, of course soundgarden is monumental, but mastodon has their own thing. no sense in comparing but we know really who is most legendary. those guys definitely like soundgarden too, who wouldnt?

    Superunknown is a masterclass of imaginative riff-making. The whole guitar playings of the whole album is flawlessly delicious, the best of its era and among the bests in rock history. Having a creative drummer and smart bassist help too.

    I've been depressed (and other mental stuff...) for some years and, when this happened, something snapped inside of me, because I thought the exact same words you said at 14:33 . I was like "I'm depressed because I feel useless, but Chris, the great Chris just commited suicide? What's the point of everything?". I felt like, if life didn't have a point, I might as well stop being afraid of failure and pick up the guitar again, which I had abandoned years ago. I started playing and, when something didn't go well, I'd search for tutorials and videos of better guitar players. Some months later here I am, trying to play 4th of July and I find a video where you say the exact same words that came to my mind the day Chris died. It's weird, it's like a circle that just closed or something...

    Definitely will be missed. Soundgarden was the anti Nirvana for me. Melodic, kinda creepy, and those insane vocals. Another great and honorable tribute. Well done

    • @jecaine876
      @jecaine876 5 років тому +12

      I love what you said about the Anti Nirvana, I was never a Nirvana fan, however in a culture of rock bands fighting each other and sabotaging each other Chris Cornell got all the bands of the Seattle scene to work together, and promoted an environment of cooperation among the bands. He sung on AIC's "Right Turn" on the SAP EP. What an amazing man and musician.

    • @Giovayo
      @Giovayo Рік тому

      As a fan of both, I think the hits make Nirvana look like just another band with power chords, screams and stupid lyrics, but if you actually listen to them, they're way more than that, some lyrics are actually really deep and have great vocals in my opinion. But yeah, Soundgarden still gets the prize for being that musically complex, which Nirvana ain't at all.

    My god, Limo Wreck is probably my favorite Soundgarden song. That song is literally perfect! I'm gonna write a song now in this tuning or something similar.

  • @keeranimal8
    @keeranimal8 7 років тому +7

    I'm a drummer, and I remember after the album came out I got a copy of modern drummer with Matt Cameron on the cover...he broke down some of the song's time signatures and explained them with notation...his explanation of Limo Wreck? "This is just your everyday average song in 15/8 timing!". Loved this band!!!

    • @jimplaysric
      @jimplaysric 6 років тому +3

      The odd time signatures in their songs are proof of their talent, the lyrics were always allowed to find their proper flow and to suggest or dictate the meter. I've heard a lot of terrible songwriters that are squeezing vocal phrases in a spot, or stretching the phrases somewhere else, all because they can only play in 4/4.

    As the guitarist for the Seattle based soundgarden & temple of the dog tribute, OUTSHINED, I say well done, sir. We had a show schedule 2 days after he passed & of course, it became a memorial show for him & my last show in Seattle before I moved 2100 miles the following day to TX. It was among one of my most memorable shows by far. The man that made me move to Seattle 21 years ago died 3 days before I left. It doesn't get any stranger. We love you, Chris. "No one sings like you anymore."

      Well that's another strange thing for me to find. My two favorite vocalists were Ronnie Dio and Chris Cornell, Dio died on the 16th of May of 2010, Chris on the 17th of May. That is one strange coincidence, and so is the one that affected your life as well. I hope you get to play as much as you did in Texas, Mr Sharp!

      Variations on open tunings and drop tunings most of them. Other tunings they used: CGCGGE, BADGBE, and EEBBBE. The latter two were coined on the Badmotorfinger record, another must listen.

    Great video, and more importantly, a great message at the end. No matter how happy, wealthy, or successful someone may appear to be, we never know what is really going on inside their head. We have to get rid of the stigma of mental health, so people that need the help will seek it out before doing something so extreme.
    Thoughts and love to the Cornell family and all of the great people Chris worked with over a huge career.

    Thanks a lot for this video, these are pretty good and fun-to-play riffs that you showed with such quality and generosity. My personal favorite song and opening riff from this album is "Let Me Drown", such a punch-in-the-face song that pretty much let's you know what good music you are going to listen through this record. For the end, I normally don't comment on videos, but you really touched me with you kindness towards people who are suffering from depression, as well as graditude towards Cornell. That made me this video 10 times greater. Thanks again, have a good jam and take care! :)

    He was a riff machine. I personally know 20 guys faster and flashier, but he was of the Zep, Floyd Beatles school, which is centers the guitar more in songwriting first and foremost. There are only a handful of guys that pull that off. And Chris did. Mailman, Room a Thousand Years Wide, Jesus Christ Pose, Like Suicide, Tyree. And many, many others. God damn, these riffs fucking kill. Beyond effective, they are truly inspired and inspiring. BTW I was hoping you would bring up Limo Wreck, Mr Eller! It's really fun to play and few know how it is done.
