Cornell was such an under appreciated and innovative guitarist
chris was an amazing guitarist. he wasn't a dumb shredder, he was an amazing riff creating machine. chris, Kim, Ben and Matt created some badass tunings too. very well done video btw.
IntrovertedLoner
Agreed, also playing and singing in odd time signatures as Chris did is seriously tricky.
i think kim and Chris are a little bit underrated
@@nathanielbaker6884 Slightly so.
Hei I love dumb shredding !
I've always loved the "wall of sound" Soundgarden create on their albums with those guitars, especially on Superunknown and DOTU, where they started mixing clean tone and distortion, basically becoming the Led Zeppelin of our generation. Then you have Matt's unique drumming, Kim's crazy solos, Ben's psychedelic stuff and that AWESOME voice.
Brilliant band, absolutely the best band from Seattle if you ask me. No disrespect to Nirvana, AIC and Pearl Jam (I fucking love all of them), but Soundgarden have always been on a whole different level.
Just a few days before the passing of Chris I was surfing the web in search of some news about a new Soundgarden's album, dreaming about how good it would have been. Great loss for rock music and music in general.
It was a sad day when I found out Chris Cornell had passed. I seen them twice live. A great lesson here. Thank you for the great lesson. R.I.P. Cris Cornell
dude, these videos are great. I've played for years, but as I'm self taught I've never really 'learned' anything. I've unintentionally stopped playing these last couple of years and am soon giving myself a kick up the backside to start playing again. When I do I'm absolutely sold on signing up with your website - you're a great teacher. Keep up the good work! cheers
what a brilliant video! I've been using some of these techniques while covering Soundgarden but never realised how novel they were. Chris and Kim was/are true geniuses.
Almost 4 years on and I still can’t get over it. I was just starting to play guitar in Summer of 2017, so I wasn’t aware of all the greats that died that year.
Awesome video and great guitar tone! What I like about SG is that Kim and Chris used interesting tuning techniques not for show off shredder virtuosity (trend of the 80's), but for easier playing and sonic heaviness. SUB-stance over style.
Came for my love of Soundgarden, stayed for the BEAUTIFUL mirrored polish on that SG. Respect.
Thanks for this! ofcourse soundgarden is awesome. But making such a in-depth lesson about a band, is what's missing from youtube guitar tutorials. I'ts always about a song or specific techniques.
I would love more in-depth band tutorials :D
Wicked video! Gonna try some of these in the morning. The missus is asleep and wouldn't be impressed if I broke that old axe out now...he he. Keep making good videos and Chris''s music and memory will live on in us all. RIP CC! X
Thanks for making this video. Soundgarden is one of my favorite bands.
I have just discovered your videos a day ago, and you are so good at this. Amazing that I have been playing for 30+ years at a very advanced level and I am learning tons from you. Trick after trick after trick. Thank you.
Very well packed video! Please do Kim too! Or it's not complete.
Chris and Kim = Soundgarden's guitar sound...
Great video man. Love the sound you are getting, nice tonezzzz
guitar techniques of chuck shuldiner please, would be super interesting
Yes please!!!! Chuck Shuldiner is badass.
So awesome, thanks for the lesson!
Great job on nailing the tone pretty well I would say!!! Great vid
Soundgarden is my favorite band by far. Now I know I am not alone!
dude i'm not a musician but i am a soundgarden lover, and this was exactly the music appreciation lesson i've been looking for, and a mourning instrument. thanks
Thanks for the lesson! Fantastic. I'm a total SG fan. Thanks again!
Mike, great lesson with well deserved respect!
Excellent, inspiring and reverent vid! Right on!
I think you may have hooked me as a new subscriber to your online lessons. I was at their last show in Detroit and this video got me in the feelings.
Super interesting. Thanks for the lesson!
Impressive in depth lesson. Just gained a subscriber
boss, if you get any "unkind" comments on your vids especially this one, dont give it a second read...
you've been sharing alot here and to people like me, this is so priceless
thanks and keep the lessons coming please... love this one, my all time favorite band and riffs!
you've got a new sub, great video!
Thanks so much for doing this! Truly one of the most underrated artists and really sad I only started to explore his music properly after he left us...
One of a kind sounding band... Soundgarden
Nice video! Pls do a part two explaining Kim techniques!!
Cool video man! Rip Soundgarden
thanks again for another GREAT lesson ;-)
GREAT video! You did Chris and the whole band proud.
How about a Smashing Pumpkins/Billy Corgan vid?? So much to dig into there(my god, the tones alone!), and I'd love to see how you break it down.
Keep it up man.
Great video as always, Chris was a hugely underrated guitar player in my opinion. I actually understood how good he was not that long ago despite being a fan of the band for years and years, mainly because he was that great of a vocalist that I didn't even think of him that way.
I know you probably have a gigantic list of artists to cover on this series, but do you think about making a video more focused on Thayil's lead guitar too?
Thank u for your help.
I just discovered this channel. Great stuff. Would love to see one of these on Mike Einziger.
Wow it's a fcking good concept to do these kind of videos !
Keep going like this man !
Damn dude, you Really know your shit!! Excellent video.
Very cool. Thanks
I just discovered your channel and subscribed right away. Thanks for a great lesson about Soundgarden's unique style! I will try this in depth later today. Sorry if I missed the info, but did you say anything about your rig? I'd love to learn about your overdrive/amp sound.
I love this series, but damn do you put the videos out fast. I'm still trying to learn those Randy Rhoads licks!
Nice lessons!!(now I need to buy a wah pedal)
Thank u
great series! one of my favorites! About the real fast wah-thing: are you sure it's not an autowah with the rate set high? I used to own a Boss DynaWah and you could make those exact sounds with it... All the best
GREAT, GREAT INFO - thank you very much !
I have 2 suggestions: Vernon Reid 's greatest guitar techniques! And Duane Denison (from Tomahawk, Jesus Lizard and Legendary Shack Shakers). Both very unique, robust and underestimated players who never really got the credit they deserved. BtW the Dime episode is a mainstay for me, real insightful!
Thanks
hey great video. Which wah pedal are you using? It sounds great!
how did u get that rotary effect on the "black hole sun" slide technique? any particular brand, model, etc pedal? & is that the same effect ur using on the high triad apreggios? as always, great lesson! i learn a lot from ur vids.
+mjt11860 Honestly I did it after the fact in Pro Tools adding the effects with plugins. That being said I loved the rotary so much I may buy a pedal. I used a flanger plugin for the triad part with a high rate speed.
thank u very much! always wanted to know how it was done.
What kind of amp you rocking on this video? I know it's old and if you reply that would be awesome thanks man!
Jesus Christ Pose the guitar riffs are so haunting they make my stomach turn in a good way! A song that keeps surprising me and Soundgarden at its best!
don't forget almost all of those things you are showing to us comes from kim thayil, he's very underrated, such an amazing guitarist
7/4 is one of the most known and popular time signatures from the 90s. If there's a time signature I really love it's 9/8.
good vid dude. Do a jeff buckley :)
LOVE SOUNDGARDEN . NOT MEANING TO TAKE AN THING AWAY FROM THEM OR YOU BUT DO YOU KNOW WHAT KIND OF GUITAR HE WAS PLAYING IN DETROIT I WOULD LOVE TO GET ONE TO REMEMBER HIM. GREAT LESSON THANKS.

THANK YOU SO MUCH
Whats that Badmotorfinger font you used called? Never been able to find that
Kyle Carruthers Not sure. I just Googled Soundgarden font and grabbed one.
The-Art-of-Guitar Guess I haven't googled it in a while. Thanks! Good video, loved the ugly truth stuff.
i subscribed.
youre new here i guess.
keep doing videos.
you can do pink floyd, muse, radiohead, rage against the machine, alice in chains, tame impala, white stripes etc.
Would love some more rhythm oriented technique lessons like this one. Sonic Youth or Nirvana maybe? Also, props to you for doing this. Not many people take the time to teach songwriting concepts.
Mike, how are you getting your sound? Amps?, Pickups and pedals? Show me what you got. Love the sound
I believe for this one I used my Marshall JCM800 direct.
+1 SUB!
A trick I use for 7/4 and 5/4 is to break up the measures into groups of 3 and 4 (or 2). Counting "7" sucks with two syllables.
Who is actually forcing you to pronounce the second syllable in your head? People abbreviate names all the time and know whom they are talking about. Give yourself the freedom to call Seven "Sev" if it helps.
you should do a video on Kim Thayil guitar technique
Can't believe it's already been almost a year.
For those who don't know the reason Chris was so good at those odd timing signatures was because he started as Soundgarden's drummer and he used to sing while playing drums until it became too difficult
They had Matt who is one of the best at playing those odd time sigs.
i remember people asking Kim Thayil about Flower and what kinda stuff he was doing for that, turns out it was just Drop D and barre chords
I don't really know how you're hearing the Outshined riff like that, ur playing extra notes when Kim Thayil just slides down the neck and starts the riff again, sounds way cooler
oh yes do a feed back on jesus Christ pose pls!, I am looking forward to this I am very thank you for the tips and tricks awesome stuff , thank you
Ugly Truth has a great riff.
do audioslave or ratm!
Can you do Lenny kravitz
The most important Kim's guitar technique is missing!!😅 The beard-picking that he used a lot in live shows in early 90s. After Jimi's teeth-picking and Jimmy's bow, Kim invented the beard-picking...
guitar techniques of Mark Knopfler
No band was ever more aptly named.
1:24 accidentally played a Gojira technique
You're playing the end of the "Outshined" riff wrong. It just holds on the F then slides up quickly right at the end. No idea where you got that extra G and F from!
I know where I got it from. My imagination. I'm considering it my Berenstain/Berenstein Bears moment. ;) Good call.
Do u think music school, “music college”, is getting in the way of originality? There are so many amazing bands, perfect sounds, but they don’t have that thing, that snap!
Originality will always prevail but I do think a lot of people believe that by going to music college you're instantly going to find success in the music field. Far from the truth.
very creatove sound garden was hmmm
your shirt breaks the rule
chis Cornell played rhythm on most songs
You must teach a lot of beginners....I feel like a four year old even though I've been playing almost 20 years
Say hi to Scully.
Passed away???? It’s more important to tell the truth. Another great video.
I don’t think some of this is true. All respect to Chris Cornell (RIP) who was one of the great voices, but I think it was Kim Thayil who invented the unusual guitar style of Soundgarden and Chris Cornell got into it over time, most likely under Kim’s tutelage, and then they probably started splitting roles and collaborating. But the heart (and the orchestrator) of the guitar sound was always Kim. Just listen to Chris’ guitar playing with other bands to confirm this - it’s very different. There just isn’t enough credit being given to Kim and I keep wondering why.
Kim Thayil's name is pronounced Thayil like SMILE not like ALE
Very cool video of techniques for their guitar playing , just wish you played some of their riffs correctly
Maybe you're like me in thinking we'd have so much more time.
Love your vidoes but this was not your best. Most of these are just very simple and very common techniques hardly unique to Soundgarden at all.
Also I think leaving out some of Soundgardens unique tunings (Drop B, CGCGGE, EEBBBB, etc) seems like a big omission as well as leaving out some of Kim Thayils preferred modes. Was a great pointer about the Wah-filter for Rusty Cage though, seems so obvious now but I never realized that was where that tone came from.
You had me till you compared him to Eddie Vedder in a negative way, , Eddie Vedder is very very talented, just wasnt bi-polar or as self involved,. its also drop d they plyed in, like Black Sabbash, the band the Chefs used to cover in Chicago, when Chris was the drummer
I did?
guitar techniques of Joe Walsh
