How To Play the Guitar Part of "Seasons" by Chris Cornell
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- I had many questions on the tuning of Seasons by Chris Cornell. The Open Strings are tuned D-A-D-A-A-D but with the Capo at the 3rd Fret it becomes an F5 tuning F-C-F-C-C-F.

6 years later, and I still find myself coming back to this, heart broken.
Again, I can’t express how much admiration I have for Rick Beato for showing how the magic is made. The best I can do is say thank you Rick Beato and Rest In Peace, Chris Cornell.
Right now listening to this is the most I've ever wanted to learn guitar in my life.
Hope you decide to, it's nothing quite as beautiful as learning thkse songs you love.
Do it! You won't regret it. Best decision I ever made, been playing 30 years. This is a particularly good song for a beginner to learn, simple but elegantly arranged, lots to learn from this but not difficult with a little practice.
Do it dude.. This would actually be pretty easy to learn from nothing (at least the very first part).. The alternate turning makes it so you don't have to learn many finger positions.
Never too late👍
I will tell you - it is definitely worth it. No question about it.
You will be glad forever that you learnt it.
Lots has been said about Chris. I can't be the only one that thinks these grunge-era musicians were a class all their own. The 70s had the doors, Jimi, and many others of whom had a unique style and offered something pivotal to the entire industry. The 90s, in contrast, had something very different. Not to take away from the others, but how many people could invent entirely new tunings, such as this one, to carve their marble statue of pure emotion? Not like anything else ever was, and will never return.
so fuckin true man, in my mid 30's the more i listen to the classic grunge the more i appreciate how bloody good they were :)
Jimi and the doors were the 60s
@@reeseblair2878 How true. They do tend to be lumped into the same rock sound, because they really invented it. I know about ol Jim Morrison. 27 club member. Similar to how these guys paved the way for Godsmack and Linkin Park.
Agree with your premise...though it is my generation. Amazing though how I never heard how much this song seems to draw influence from Zeppelin.
The 80's were taking what the 70's had brought and perfected much of it with precision. The 90's took what the 70's had brought and amplified that x100.
60s = beginning
70s = creativity
80s = perfecting
90s = 70s on steroids
00s = losing momentum but sparks of genius
10s = falling into a more palatable (bland) blender for the masses
20s = all is lost
I know very little of Chris Cornell - even though I grew up in the nineties.
Too bad I only became aware of his unique musicality after he passed.
Good stuff Mr. Beato!
I envy you because you're about to listen to one of my favourite musicians for the first time. Happy journey!
That's crazy dude, I can't imagine my life for the past 25 years NOT listening to C.C, that would be like living in a wheelchair for me. His music has been an inspirational program guide on life in this world. I envy you as well, you're about to have your mind 💥 blown!! Enjoy and keep listening!! 💯👍👀
Impossible, black hole sun was the biggest song if the 90's.
@@EnlightenedSavage he probably listened to sound garden without realising C.C was in the group
Same here! 😔... And I'm 48 years old. @Not Right Music
I cannot thank you enough, I love this song so much that I want to learn to play the guitar. This song got me through some of the toughest times in my life. Divorced and lost a custody battle of my daughters. Had to take a job overseas because of the amount of child support I had to pay. Lost my best friend to Lou Gehrig's Disease, a month later, lost my brother to a car accident. It was a rough year to say the least. However, this song carried me through it....that is the power of music. And Chris Cornell is one of my favorite artist. So in short, even though it's not short...lol. Thank you for what you do; words cannot express my appreciation of the song.
LEARN TO PLAY! It's so rewarding and has gotten me through some hard times. It's an emotional outlet. Being able to pick up a guitar and just improvise music is a fantastic feeling.
@@christco120 I couldn't agree more. It can be frustrating sometimes, but when it clicks it REALLY clicks.
Wow your story is heartfelt. And how powerful music is!! I hope you are getting better and hope you will see your daughters again. Hold on, Hold on to the music and to guitar
Great video here. Very hard to find one like this that breaks down for the beginner how you get a guitar into the whacky tuning for the song, yet doesn’t blind you with theory and demonstrates how to play it practically. Top job!!
God, Rick, if only EVERY guitar lesson on UA-cam were like this so simple yet so informative, fret numbers, repeat it a few times, and it's a masterpiece!
Rick, thank u so much for making this video. Cornell was a hero for me and i feel closer to his spirit learning this song which i revered so much i never dared try to learn it. From my heart, Thank you!
This is the best tutorial ever. You're very thorough. So easy to follow. I've always loved this song, so thank you!
Who are the people that hit the "thumbs down" on this???? Rick, this is awesome and a beautiful reminder of Cornell's magic.I love all your videos. They are never not inspiring and informative. Rock on, brother!
This has always been one of my many favorite Chris Cornell songs since The Singles soundtrack when I was teenager. I was fortunate to see many great Soundgarden concerts. I always wanted to learn to play this song. Many people play it differently. This lesson blew my mind! This is it! I will have to try this, slowly but surely. Thank you Rick! I love watching and listening to your great stories. YOU ROCK!
30 thumbs down? WTF!
Thirty people that poked their eyes out with broken strings trying to tune their guitars lol Thanks Rick this is killer.
This is the best tutorial for 'Seasons' I have ever seen. Thank you, I learned a lot!
Thanks so much. Even without the vocals this song is gorgeous.
The guitar singing it
Interesting how almost makes it sounds like a 12-string guitar with this tuning chords
Innit
DAAAAD tuning!
This is so awesome man. I had convinced myself I would never be able to play this. Gonna add this to the playlist.
RIP Chris.
This is now one of my all time favorite YT vids. The best Cornell song IMO.
Rick Beato as in your name you are truly Blessed with talent.... loved your tribute song from the other day. Still can't believe it. He was all that is Rock and Roll. He filled the Zeppelin hole for me too. Thank you..
Thank you man for all what you do for sake of magical times😘
Thanks for taking the time to do this tutorial. Very interesting tuning. Clearly, Mr. Cornell had a sound in mind and tuned accordingly, rather than reaching for a more conventional tuning and going from there. Great stuff!
Thanks for taking the time to explain this. I learned it years ago in standard tuning, but never realized the richness of all the open strings was l missing.
Thank you very much Rick! What a shock & terrible loss with Chris Cornell's passing. What an incredible talent he was.
I hadn't put this tuning with this song yet. Interestingly enough, I already know this tuning from playing Pete Townsend's cover of Save It For Later by The English Beat. Thank you for your great lessons and awesome cover of Seasons - I'm practicing it now. Peace. JR
I love you man! You makes me cry First Time i saw your tribute video about Chris, and now a Grest tutorial to celebrate Cornell's music. Thank you very much!
I put this as a reply to a comment here but putting it here too.
Yes I only have an electric my dad got me when I was 16, now 51. Never learned much beyond Smoke on the water ;) but had dug it out for my step son who taught himself on it. We got him a nice electric and acoustic. But now I'm hoping my 10yo daughter will pick up the ole Epiphone "by Gibson" and dive in. This video has ME wanting to pick it up to learn. If I do then maybe I'll have earned the right to get my daughter and I am acoustic. She plays viola and her awesome Grampa has gotten her a Uke so 🤞 the sound of many vibrating strings will be heard from our home. Love this song and its writer. One of those tunes you LOVE THE FIRST TIME YOU HEAR IT. Of course it came out before you could instantly "pull up" a dozen versions of it. I first had to figure out where the hell it came from, then "pull up" to my record store. Thank God I did because for me it's simply one of the best soundtracks out there and introduced me to a whole WORLD of amazing artists!!! ✌️🤍🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
A great song by one of the greatest.
Great lesson Rick. This was one of your first videos I came across at that sad time and have followed your impressive growth in followers since. Can't believe this didn't have more views. Your knowledge and work ethic is admirable, please keep it up
Rick Beato, this was an AMAZING TUTORIAL. No disrespect to the other guys who have posted "how to" lessons on this song, but Rick, yours is the ABSOLUTE BEST! You sound just like Chris. You guitar playing sounds just like the guitar playing on the actual song. My favorite Chris Cornell song of all time. Thanks, Rick!
Lol Karl Brownie
Despite growing up in the 90's and being a huge Soundgarden fan, I somehow missed this song until very recently. It's no wonder why so many people want to learn it on the guitar though. It's more Blues than the majority of traditional Blues music out there. Definitely a highlight of Chris' discography which didn't get the attention it deserved back in the day.
I've seen it played a couple of other ways, the most popular alternative being FFCCCF with no capo. The benefit of not using the capo is obviously more sustain/resonance, though I don't think it sounds as harmonious as the DADAAD that Rick is using here.
Great lesson, great song. Cheers Rick.
Grabbing my acoustic when I get home and trying this
The tuning is actually from low to high is EEBBBE when he played the song live on his acoustic tours and it's played without a capo. this is shown on a picture that was posted on his facebook on a sheet of paper on top of the guitar stand with the songs Seasons and The Day I Tried To Live written on it.
Sure, for the live performance he sang it down a 1/2 step. But D5 tuning with capo'd 3rd fret sounds like the studio version IMO.
Such a great sound and that was such an early song in his career. So amazing at that age. Love the grungy tone
That's fantastic. I remember playing it as soon as i heard it back then. Now you just have to SING IT, man!!! Give it a try!!😅
Omg thank you!! I always wanted to learn that song, it's my favorite song from Chris Cornell. RIP
Great Song - I've always thought of this as one of Chris Cornell's Best (and first) Solo attempts from the Singles OST. Really amazing to see you break it down = Very Nice and sounds Great !! Excellent
First time I heard this song I was just blown away. Thanks for the video Rick
You are a scholar and a saint for this!
I feel so mad... I saw you playing it in your tribute to Chris Cornell and wanted to learn it so badly (I even asked you for the tuning) so I sat myself down and started figuring it out by ear for like 2 and a half hours and now you just uploaded a lesson of it. Anyways great video buddy. Subbed for your great video content.
Sorry Jerry!
Hahaha. Nothing to apologize about buddy.
Just taking the cue since the cover is the subject at hand: Jason sang wonderfully! Does he work with music? I was surprised because from the way he spoke I got the impression he didn't, perhaps I'm wrong. He reminded me a lot of the original recording, and in this sad occasion I feel hinting at the original was a good choice. Thanks for both videos Rick!
Great lesson. I play it in a different turning: FFCCCF which seems to match the timbre if the song a little closer.
Mister Tee that's how Cornell actually plays it
That’s the original tuning. However, he drops it to E when he plays it live, because he does The Day i tried to live(?) after...
I just posted a tribute video of Seasons, I’d be honored if you’d take a look
Rick seems to have it close if not spot on n sounds like the record..although in the Adam Levine live on Howard Stern; his guitar player explains the song is tuned FCCCCF
Yeah it would be the same key. Drop tuning it and using a capo like Rick does would put less tension on the neck.. and save you the risk of breaking strings from having to tune up high.
@@allendean9807 I decided to take a stroll onto your page and "liked" your cover of SEASONS and subscribed 👍 very nicely done..also really liked your cover of We Die Young..
bad a$$!! 🤘🤘🎶🎶
Amazing. Rest in peace.
Sound is flawless..super clean
I've always wanted to be able to play this song and now I can. Thank you so much Rick!!!
Thank you Mr Beato. Always loved this song. Still brings tears. Im going to buy another guitar just so I can have one in this tuning.
Rick I loves ya for this. Best of all is my guitar is in CGCGCD 90% of the time so for me I only needed that tuning pointer. Respect.
This different tuning reminds me of rain song by zeppelin, that song affected me so much as well. So original.
this guy is a riot, and the only correct version on youtube
There's something so incredibly Page'esk about this song it's beautiful 😍
I love this song and I loved your explanation on how to play that song!
Amazing job!
Excellent lesson Rick! Thank you
Never realized it was this easy. Reminds me a little of Like Suicide. Different tuning but similar chord structure.
Thank you so much for this, Rick! Off to practice now. (I'll do the singing part - wish me luck)
Thanks Rick!! Great outdoors tutorial sir....love the book and love your channel
Outstanding
Awesome lesson.
This song means a lot to me, and really appreciate the upload.
Thanks so much for this. I wish I could like this vid many times.
Having watched many of your Holdsworth-related vids in recent weeks, and now seeing your name pop up in connection to a Chris Cornell song, I'm reminded of that quote (from Duke Ellington?) about there being "only two kinds of music."
Love this song
Nice Work. Favorite song from Mr. Cornell. Didn't care much for the movie, but this song off of the Singles soundtrack made the album worth buying.
Mike Love has a nice cover in standard tuning.
Finding a great lesson for your favorite tune is always great. Finding Rick Beato himself hand guiding you through it feels like I'm stealing something.
You are stealing it…and it was meant to be shared. I’m sure Chris would be more than delighted that it would move you, inspire you, TAKE IT, PLAY IT.
Fantastic song and so creative from Chris. Like how did he come up with that In that weird tuning
Rick you are a bad ass guitar player
Beautiful. Magical.
Ok I got the guitar parts down and thanks for that!.....But now....how am I gonna sing it? BTW subscribed!
That was a great tutorial!! Thank you very much, Rick!
That's brilliant, Rick. It sounds a little like Zeppelin during their 'inspired by lord of the rings' period.
very nice job!!!!!! uncovering 3rd fret capo makes it perfect!!!!!
I don't even play, but now I want to go buy/borrow a guitar just to learn this song
hey - I just discovered your channel, I want to say I really dig what you got goin on here.. very talented guitarist. thank you for sharing and teaching your skill with us
Great video! Wonderful song finely constructed.
Thank you!
This is really a fantastic tutorial, thanks!
That's one of your best videos yet Rick
I remember when you and your friend did the tribute to Chris perfect choice in songs in my opinion... one of my favorites you're a great teacher too
Mega tutorial !! Thanks so much Rick !
OMG, thank you for uploading this!
You’re the best Rick
Learned the song with standard tuning yesterday, how dumb was I... Thanks for sharing!
Thank You do much for this!!!
Do you know if Chris used a Capo in the Recording? Sounds like it. But live he just tunes it to the key open without the Capo. Sounds great though with the Capo. I have to finger pick it because with a pick I can't jump strings like you can. Its super hard with a pick. You Rock. Drums are my first instrument.
Maybe in the studio a mix of both but I agree
Thanks Rick great tutorial, Just subscribed.
Merci beaucoup !!!
Love this song and it's fun to play. I need to get better at alternate tunings though. Took me a while to get this sounding right (ish).
Thank you rick!
that's great, Rick ! thanks a lot!
Awesome brother!
That is an amazing tuning looks really fun to experiment with and and kinda easy to make a cool old school bluesy Zeppelin type sound fantastic
Hi Rick! You are a great person and an outstanding musician but the only and true tuning of this masterpiece is FFCCCC.
Very good thank you I'll try it
Love it!
That was KIm Tayil...a real genious too!
It's so "Zeppelinish!"
good video. sounds fine with the capo, but ya can tune in F5 without it. FFCCCF was how Cornell played it.
ffcccf or fcfccf?
@@ripincomicsans ffcccf
Thanks for this.
I owe you lunch for this.
I'm with you, Sean. i feel like I owe Rick lunch as well. Brilliant tutorial for such as brilliant awesome song.
I'm here because Nathan Wesley suggested it.
Great. Really tank you
On these notes (Seasons) you can play Within You Without by George Harrison ))
Thank you!!
Hi Rick..u seem to have it sounding right with the tuning u got although I've heard it explained that the tuning is FCCCCF.
The guitar player explained that tuning from Adam Levine live on Howard Stern.
Either way..the tuning u have seems to work..sounds awesome 👍🤘
I get why u chose the lower varied tuning with added capo...to actually tune to F would probably pop some strings 😳
Thanks!
RICK ROCKS🤷♀️
Again, if I had Chris Cornell's voice. I would never speak again.
I would sing everything I had to say.
