Richard, thank you for leaving the mistakes in the video. Everyone makes them regardless of how much experience or training you have had. By leaving them in, you make everyone aware of such things. It takes a strong personality to not edit them out. I've been doing this for years, and I still learned a few things by observations I've made while watching your video.

I started with another video, but I had to leave it because it didn't make several thing clear. This video gives all the explanations that I need, and I'll be using it tomorrow--I'm too tired now--to install the toilet tank repair kit. I'll be back after I finish the job. Oh, I just noticed the presence of some old-timers here. Well, I beat them all. I'm 81, but I don't feel any reason for boasting. I still have everything I need to do the job. I'm just a not a very handy handyman, but age has to do with the unhandy part.

Very clearly done step-by-step video of how to do a FluidMaster Tank Repair Kit installation. Mr. Lloyd is a calm, patient instructor who isn't hyped up on caffeine and he takes you thru the installation steps at a pace anyone can follow. If only every UA-cam presenter could follow his lead we could all learn a thing or two.

I am a 58 year old woman that's been divorced and on my own for 16 years. With the help of online videos, I've installed and repaired all kinds of things I never imagined I'd be responsible for by myself. I especially liked this one because it was real time and you ran into difficulties just like most of us do, making the repair/installation process realistic. This made for a longer video than others but was worth it to me because you shared problem-solving techniques. My children are all grown and on their own now and they know more than I did partly because of watching and helping me be the do-it-yourself lady I have become. Every time I successfully complete another project, I believe I am awesome! Thank you for your help!

This was so very helpful! I bought the Fluidmaster kit at my local Lowe’s, got it home, and was totally buffaloed by the “easy installation” instructions. After looking at the parts for a couple of days, I found this video and felt totally confident about proceeding. My only issue was a big triangular rubber gasket on the bottom of my Kohler’s toilet. I called Kohler (SUPER not helpful) and Fluidmaster (equally not helpful). After much deliberation, I reused one of the three bolts from my Kohler and the six rubber gaskets in this kit and threw the triangular gasket in the garbage. Richard, you are my hero! Thank you!

Thank you Richard! Your video proves that even a 65-year-old lady can fix her toilet (with a LITTLE help from her husband to lift the tank). I love the step-by-step thoroughness of your instructions. I looked at another video but found it lacking in some details that I needed, so I'm glad I stumbled upon your video. One skill of a good teacher is the ability to put yourself in the learner's shoes -- yes I need to know which direction a gasket should face, etc. At one point my husband came in and tried to bull his way into helping me. I told him to get out -- I want to know that I've done every step correctly.

I used the same exact kit, I put in the bolts the way it was described in the instructions. The second rubber gaskets protect the porcelain on the bowl. But it works great, I put this kit on a 68 year old toilet. Unfortunately my disassembly wasn't as smooth as yours the flapper and over flow tube were extremely corroded and improperly installed. I had to carefully cut off the brass assembly with a reciprocating saw. Now the toilet works better than it has in years. The adjustable flapper helps control the amount of water that goes thru the system. Also it's a great idea that the fill valve assembly is height adjustable.

Really appreciate the time you took to make the video and share it. I found one issue with your process that I want to bring to your attention. The tank bolts need to use the thinner nuts before the regular nut. Basically the correct order is for the bolt head to go through rubber washer, bottom of the tank, metal washer, thin nut, toilet bowl, rubber washer, metal washer regular nut. This allows you to directly tighten the rubber inside tank with the thin nut. Then you tighten the regular nut for the tank to the bowel. Some will have three bolts instead of two and they provide extra rubber washers for this but you need to reuse your bolt and nuts. There is a correct order of hardware parts diagram in step 4 of the instructions that will make this more clear.

@@richardlloydusa I was confused about the washers and nuts on the tank bolts, so I went to a plumbing supply store. I bought a tank bolt kit from them and asked them about the washers. They said that there should be a rubber washer inside the tank and outside. One metal washer should go over the outside rubber washer and one of the nuts should be used to tighten it. The other washer and nut should be used to hold the tank to the bowl. This allows the torque on the tank sealing washers to be different from the torque used to level the tank. My tank was installed the same way you show yours, but the attachment bolts had been torqued so much to make a seal that the inside rubber washer was heavily deformed and the metal washers holding the tank to the bowl were bent into dome shapes. I suspect this was done by the contractor because it saves money.

Thanks for sharing, it was helpful. My kit came with six rubber washers so I used the extras between the tank and the toilet for a little extra cushion. I also found that if you have a pipe cutter, it makes a much cleaner cut than a hacksaw would. I didn't have a hacksaw handy so I didn't have a choice. Worked out just fine! Thanks again.

Great job. I needed the refresher. I'm glad you included the part at the end about the excess chain. It can get missed, and it doesn't always get tangled under the flapper valve. But sooner or later it will tangle, usually on your last flush before leaving on a weekend vacation. Make sure it is short enough (but not too short) even if it does not tangle on the first flush. That is a lesson learned on my part. Well done.

My hero! Thanks for including all of the little "important notes" for those of us who don't know the first thing about plumbing. Loved that bit of magic at @ 32:30 where the base cleans itself! ....and....just a side note...I have that very same "masterpiece" of behind-the-tank art. Same size...same shape! :)

Great job, great visuals, and great audio. I really liked how you explained, and showed what mistakes you made and how to fix them. I finally feel confident in how all the internal parts work, and at what level the parts need to be set. Also, what I should be looking for with running water, leaks, etc.. Before this video I wanted to stick with the old replacement parts. I didn't want to deal with the new types like this Fluidmaster. Now I feel confident in switching over to the newer replacement parts. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.

    this was a great help.
imagine going into the bathroom and finding the floor soaked and wondering why - toilet tank bolts leaking is why.
i bought this kit last year because the float valve was leaking out the top when flushed so now was the time to fix this. dremel with a cutting wheel + makita 5" grinder = removal of rusty tank bolts.
your presentation was easier than the instructions, thank you.

Liked and subbed! You really helped me out of a bind!
I have a tip to share, and an additional point about mounting the tank onto the bowl.
Tip: When removing the supply line and shut off valve, I taped some aluminum foil to the bathroom wall under the valve. I chose foil because you can easily form it in case of a leak, and guide the water into a dish or onto a towel.
Also, my instructions for the fluidmaster say to use washers and nuts on the tank bolts, then ADDITIONAL washers and nuts to secure the tank onto the bowl. The instructions have likely been updated since you published this video.

Just a note to Richard, when you are using a adjustable pliers you want to have them not backwards. Watch it and look when you can't get it to do anything that is backwards. When it was working that was the right way. The fixed jaw is on the top or backside and the jaw that moves you are putting the pressure on. Thanks for the video and hope this helps you. Dan

Did a full replace yesterday and this was awesome. Only tip I would add is folks REALLY need to pay attention to rotating the fill pump counter clockwise to raise the level before installing or you'll have to do a bit of disassembly to adjust later on. Sort of sucks how they've designed it because that's only something you'll figure out after it fills with water the first time.

I am so glad you got rid of that automatic cleaning system. You don't know how many calls I get because the back-flow of chlorine gasses from that particular system destroy the fill valve. Use Fluidmaster's Flush-n-sparkle instead. It traps all the gasses and protects the tank internals. Nice video. Thanks for installing everything according to the instructions. Most of these DIYer videos are done incorrectly.

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  10 років тому +1

You are welcome. I wasn't using that unit anyway. I will take a look at the Flush-n-sparkle. I follow the directions for three reasons. One the engineers who built the system ok'ed the manual. Two if I follow the instructions to the letter I have recourse with the manufacturer if it fails to work as advertised and in my case I also have video evidence. LOL. Three I find I have the greatest success with equipment when I follow the manufacturers directions. Thanks for watching and commenting.

The "skinny" nut you referenced at 32:04 is for reinforcing the nut and bolt connection immediately under the tank by placing a another washer and nut between the tank and bowl and tightening it until the rubber washer in the tank deforms indicating a good seal! The pros and cons of using this are that it reinforces the washers ability to seal but the con is that in the event of a leak under that washer the tank would again have to be removed to tighten it. The instructions advise reinforcement with the "skinny" nut and a washer to tighten up the seal!
