This is how i feel about the ancient meteoric ore greatsword. Not a new moveset but all my favourite GS moves in one (maybe except the old overhead swing R1). Good lights, stab R2, stab rolling attack and stab AOW with a magic follow up...literally so peak. Oh also it looks fucking amazing ... Don't really like the look of most base game UGS's
judging by its unique effects and the armor its paired with, it seems to be playing off the "demon with endless hunger and bloodlust" angle, because the armor and unique skill boost your damage but makes you take more in exchange, along with both weapon and armor being covered in blood

one thing of note that I found out, the backstep heavy counts as a backstep meaning you can follow it up with a thrusting light attack right out of the heavy animation. It feels super fluid and I found can work great as an opener since people don't expect the follow up

You don’t have to do anything else you just need to get the right timing. I usually start the light just as the backstep heavy attack animation is finishing up.
How did i not know this was part of the moveset? I mean I knew about black steel greathammer’s guard counter and backhand blade’s continuous running R1 and very good running R2 but now I wonder what other weapons have crazy new moves
my quality build makes insane use of it, slapped on shard of alex and godfrey icon and it melts anything. on the backburner I use giant hunt great katana and lions claw milady.

It might only work in PVE, PvP probably takes a lot of skill to make viable at the current speed (unless there’s an immense amount of stagger from each hit) I’m gonna go grab this make the build and runnit in PvP and let you know

You're just holding the weapon in your left hand, like it has no weight, parallel to the ground. Looks so cartoonish. DS2 had fantastic powerstance idle animations, wonder why they didn't just copy those.
The moment i grabbed the Great Katana i instantly fell in love, i always wanted a samurai themed weapon that can do decent flinch and break armor and back then my only real alternative was the Naginata which is kinda sluggish, so realising that the Great Katana fills in a gap in my loadout is perfect for giant opponents or mobs with high poise that can't be flinched with regular swords
Dragon Hunter is actually amazing for dragons. I’ve easily killed every ghost flame dragon by locking onto its head and spamming with charged ash with Godfrey and Alexander talismans, and it hits everything hard honestly, at range and with decent hyper armor. I’ve yet to be knocked out of the animation. I love it.
I LOVE how many of the new weapon types have a heavy feint, it was a cool thing that was only on (Heavy) thrusting swords and curved swords, so seeing Great Katanas, Perfume Bottles and Beast Claws get them was sick. Honestly surprised Light Greatsword doesn't considering how slick the rest of its moveset is lol.
You are seriously underselling the dragon hunter’s great katana in my opinion. The skill is very good and the longer you charge it the more range it has. With the right build and enough scadutree fragments you can kinda just keep using the skill over and over without having to get too close to whatever you are fighting and it does pretty good damage. It’s definitely not only usable against dragons. I would not call it situational at all.

When I went to fight mohg I summoned someone to help and out came this shrek dude (he looked exactly like shrek), who dropped me all 3 DLC great katana, and a bunch of other DLC weapons so I got them before I even got close to finishing the game or even got into the DLC 🤣 But I sucked terribly at the game so I was still just getting used to using sorcery and never actually used to swords til about a week ago.
The great katanas are my favorite weapons ever. All of them are unique. Dragon hunter katana is my favorite cuz of the flair. The moveset is a bit slow but i love them so much.
I played through the entire DLC with the Dragon Hunter GK, i have never felt a connection to a weapon so quickly. As soon as i got it in my hands within the first two hours of playing, it rarely left. I was able to down Bayle at Scadu blessing 3, literally killed him before Rellana and didn’t realize he was supposed to be way later because the Katana is just so good.
Monk are you gonna do new versions of the older every weapon videos? Btw I literally freaked when I heard that the first knight Greatsword is a strength weapon but has the godslayer Greatsword moveset.
Testing the Dryleaf Arts and Dane’s Footwork would be cool. Sadly they’re the only two hand-to-hand arts in the game, but their movesets are flashy and the weapon arts are cool.

Completely agree that blood tax + great katana is a fantastic combo. I had it on an occult build, and used it for all the tough fights, it was a life saver. Also, that crouch poke + poking R1 is godly.
i know some weapon movesets are kind of universal across different fantasy games, but the great katana kind of swings like the monster hunter longsword with the light combo and the fade slashes. Even the backhand blades moveset look like dual blades...
Kind of a simple ash of war, but if you are doing a bleed build, I used double slash with blood affinity on Fire Knight Queelign to good effect. I have also used freezing mist with my intelligence build, which absolutely decimates the curseblade if you catch them just right.
Definitely between Light Greatswords and Great Katanas as being my favorite new weapon type. The Dragon Man’s has basically carried me through the DLC with its weapon art.
My advoce is if a dragon is doing the flying stomp lock on to the head and roll backward when he comes down then you get a free hit against the dragon head
Dragonhunter GK being a "Situatonal PvE weapon" is underselling the weapon a bit lol. That Katana has carried me through the entire DLC because Dragonwound Slash working double time as a ranged or enhanced melee option is crazy good against every enemy in the game, not just Dragons.

for rakshasa to make the fight easier, you can spam messmers orb if you have it, he cant dodge it easily and I just damage buffed so much it dealt 6.5k damage per orb Talisman were fire scorpion, ritual sword, the thingy that makes you deal more damage with high equip load and beloved stardust, used the Golden order seal in left (my cast hand) and had the flame knight talisman in my right hand. buffs were flame shrouding, regen, golden vow and howl of shabriri
You can also just parry the ash or space yourself just outside of the range. The npc will only ever use the ash 3 times in a row, so you can punish them with your own ash or golden parry every time they try to use it
they should have called rakshasas katana mountains of corpses or something to match rivers of blood edit: i realise now that the whole rivers of blood weapon was a reference to throne of blood hence the ash is called corpse piler
You actually get no hyper armor on any of the great katans normal moveset outside of rakshasas Katana, it specifically says it has hyper armor so it kind of implies normal great katana does not have hyper armor.
Dragon Great Katana is my favorite to use weapon in the DLC. Ignoring just the dragon boost, having the charging AoW means its boosted by both Alexander Shard and Godfrey Icon, and you can hit with both blade and beam. Ive udmsed it on half the bosses in the dlc, the other half by the Dragon Halberd, my favorite weapon of base game (good moveset and ice lightning is just great lol)
An interesting thing is that the great katana's moveset is pretty similar to the longsword from Monster Hunter. If you pick up a video of the base moveset of the longsword in the most recente MH game you might see the similarities.
Blood great katana is great but I always favor Cold infused weapons with bleed. While it’s less bleed proc per hit your cold proc is basically every 2 hit which is a guaranteed stagger.
The red katana is very tricky, because of how slow it is, I noticed alot of your enemies bated into attacking you, they thought it was over, but u can still go on.

dragon hunters greatsword will have a 4 hit move combo that’s extremely slow but can do boss ending damage

honestly im disappointed its not arcane scaling tho so its not very good with dragon communion builds
im pretty sure you can feint the raksasha heavies too which is really funny considering theyre thrusts and you can just mix it up with a slash
rakshasa great katanas passive also has a second bit, as each successive attack reduces enemy defense.
don’t forget, Dragon Eyed Players also take extra damage from Anti Dragon Weapons
The power stance move set is really just the slower version of the power stance move set for normal katanas

Dragon katana has 2 hits, the initial swing and the charge release can both hit. pair it with 2 handed talisman and godfrey icon for insane damage
