    I was told by an old man I knew, you baby a new engine and take it soft, you will have a soft ass motor. If you ride it and are hard on it you will have a hard ass, tough engine. It took me a while to understand that.

    Followed a procedure similar to this one breaking in my 2016 Africa Twin. At 20k miles now it burn no oil and runs like a striped ass ape. Oil life seems to be good too still has decent viscosity and minor contamination between intervals. Clear and slightly dark like "tea color" but never black or cloudy. Great video.

    I completely agree with your recommendations. From small engines to class 8 diesel truck engines I built as a professional tech, my first step was to heat cycle it twice. Verify no leaks while heat cycling. Then take it out and drive it like you stole it. Especially in a semi or a pick up truck in my opinion. Those engines should be happy at wot from day one.

    No mechanical issues that need to be addressed immediately. All mechanical issues should be addressed immediately. Nice video, also lots of engine braking will help seat the rings. Also they say to run them hard, and to run it how you’ll run it so it’ll break in according to those conditions it will be in most of its useful life.

    After rebuilding my grizzly 700 tried the break in procedure as mentioned but after 1500km I got crack in cylinder :( . Im still wondering what can be the cause for the crack. It was aftermarket not OEM cylinder so maybe that's the reason, hard to tell.

    I just broke in a shovelhead rebuild the old fashioned way..."take it easy, don't over rev it, shut er down and grab a beer, etc". How about scored cylinders and burning oil after 300 miles? I'm trying it your way after I'm done with the re-rebuild.

    I am in the process of rebuilding my top end on my exc. I wonder If i should run instead of a 10-50w conventional oil to something thinner for the first 20 minutes like 15-40w before getting back to conventional oil of 15-50w and then to the synthetic oil i usually use. Btw. Thanks for the great info!

    Thank you for this important information. I replaced my cylinder with a new cylinder/piston and ring kit. I gapped my rings to spec. Offset the top and 2nd ring as required. Upon running it, it started to smoke a couple of minutes in and continued to smoke. Will the new rings allow it to smoke until the are seated correctly? I also replaced the the valve seals. Thanks

      @@rxsend9944 I know this is a late reply but sometimes oil will build up inside the header and the exhaust. Even after the rebuild some people don’t even think to clean them out, but the oil will need to burn out of them as well.

    I have a 95mm bore. Converted to inches is 3.74 inches. My application requires the high performance street strip guide from the ring gap chart(.0045") for the top ring and(.0050") for the second ring. When I multiply those numbers by my bore size I come up with 0.01683 for the top ring and 0.187 for the second ring. What do you recommend I set the ring gap to according to those numbers?

    • @darrenbashby
      @darrenbashby 2 роки тому +1

      I do not think the ring gap should change by bore size. The rings should be gapped to manufacturer spec. If you are using factory rings stick to their spec regardless of bore. Same would go for aftermarket rings. If the recommended gap is 0045, that is what you need.

We have a 2006 Honda Rincon TRX 680 that sometimes revs up with little forward motion when in gear while at the same time at idle, even with the torque converter solenoid manually switched off the bike will creep forward or backwards. With the same solenoid turned off it still also grates into forward or reverse. Any ideas?? Many thanks. Cheers. Hugh
