fast breathing from slow walking, faster heart rate when just walking, Being cold all the time and almost fainting when making sudden movements (dizzy standing from sitting) can be signs of iron deficiency too.
I had a Ferritin level of 3. I couldn't walk upstairs without being winded and my heart started going into tachycardia randomly. I was miserable and barely able to function. 2 iron infusions later, I felt good again. Never neglect your health. I never will again
I have the same thing with the heart it's horrible on the left side. I take iron tablets above the recommend amount. I don't think one tablet a day works for ppl like us with severe anemia. I feel my iron gets depleted in hot weather also any iron I accumulate during non period days get depleted again on my period. Do I'm popping iron pills to survive
I had all over itch and was going crazy. Went to my doctor, got tests done and had bad anemia. She then refered me for a colonoscopy and unfortunately I was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Itchiness was the only symptom I had. So please, everyone, look for medical assistant even if you think it may be nothing too serious...
My doctor told me I was anemic many years ago. I used to have to go in and get vitamin B 12 shots in the arm but my insurance doesn’t cover that anymore and I can’t afford to go to the doctor for $250 each time. I don’t want to take iron pills because they constipate me. But I have stopped running. I have zero energy anymore. I get very pale when normally I have a good color, … and now my skin adjusting all the time. I no longer have health insurance so I can’t afford to get blood work.
@@HH-gv8mx try liquid iron instead of tablets and take with a glass of fruit juice 1 hour before a meal. It is much easier on the stomach and doesn't cause constipation.
I'm 52 low iron. I was craving ice all the time. Shortness of breath is also a symptom. I was so low iron I was almost needing a blood transfusion. I believe the low iron was due to my heavy menstrual cycles. Good info! Thanks!
I was diagnosed as anemic many years ago after tested by my gynaecologist. It was directly due to heavy periods. I started taking spirulina tablets which stopped it really well.
Lol, I feel you. I was absolutely obsessed with ice for about a year. Routine labs showed my h/h was so low I DID get a transfusion. It was from my periods and went away after an ablation. I just thought I had never realized how delicious ice was before ;)
@@hascjl can u explain what is ablation Im also anemic die to heavy period I used evening primrose capsules it helped because atleast I don't get to bleed many days and few times in a month but I wish to have my normal period again 3 days
I had an IUD because I was extremely heavy periods for 7 or more days. Now I don't have any bleeding. Ask about that first before getting a n ablation which is cauterizing the uterus. Also using cast iron pans help with getting more iron.
Wow I had no idea that low iron could lead to generalized itch. I've struggled with maintaining stable iron levels throughout my life, and dry skin/ itch is definitely something that I've experienced. Thank you for these nutrition-oriented vids!
heavy periods can cause it. internal bleeds from ulcers or small tears from NSAIDs abuse. low stomach acid as well. or mixing certain foods that stop iron from being absorbed, eg calcium or anti-oxidants.
I've been a vegetarian/vegan for almost 10 years while being super low in iron and my hair shed like crazy but I refused to accept it. Then I was diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia but Minoxidil would only work to a certain extent. Now I've been eating meat again for six months and my hair completely stopped shedding. It makes me very sad to do that but after being on a plant based lifestyle for almost a decade, I think it's fair to admit my body doesn't absorb iron and protein from a vegetarian/vegan diet as well as I thought.
@@b0nemachine in general it was ok but iron and ferritin were extremely low. I tried to supplement but couldn't digest the pills most of the time so it didn't work out that much for me :(
iron is really tricky and people sometimes don't know a lot about the digestion :( I've been vegetarian for 5 years, had anemia too and just last year I learnt a lot of things about iron and the digestion of it. I'm going to write a bit about it in case it helps: The thing that surprised me the most is: DON'T consume coffee, tea or chocolate before OR after eating (2 hours before and after), it won't let it absorb. Calcium and iron don't mix, calcium will compromise the absorption of it. Vitamin C is a really helpful so having a salad with lemon juice with your meals, could be lemonade too, orange juice and other vit. C rich fruits will definitely help iron absorb better. Legumes every day if possible, lentils are rich in iron. You must soak them the night before or 8-12 hours (I'd go with 12) before cooking them, this goes for all legumes except red lentils. When you're about to cook them, discard the water and with chickpeas and beans you can go an extra step and boil them once, discard the water again and boil them again.
Everyone understand, and please read this! If you are anemic, they often cannot detect it unless you have an elite lab test. If you have heart pounding, if you walk up the stairs, if you’re tired, you can hear your heart pounding in your ear, if your hair is falling out, your skin is getting really pale get to the doctor as soon as possible. You can die from anemia. When I got to the hospital hem count was three with one being death. I was very very lucky that I knew to check myself into the ER.
I was the same made it down to a 2 cause I was tied of them telling me I was ok and giving me blood transfusions they wondered how I was still alive. Still trying figure out why it continues to drop so crazy.. I never made it back over a 10 hemoglobin or a 20 iron
@superamanda what was the reason of your anaemia?? Pls share.. I'm very afraid cause I've diagnosed sever anaemia few days ago.. I've gone through blood transfusions and iron intake... I still don't know the reason of my anaemia
This is ME! One other cause is Lyme. I was diagnosed with Lyme, particularly a live form of Babesia, which gets into the red blood cells and restricts blood flow. My broken shoulder from 10 months ago isn’t healing properly because of lack of blood flow!! Also I’ve been told I look “pasty”, with no color. The biggest problem is that I am extremely tired, and can’t drive far. You also mentioned dry skin, and about a month ago, I was in my daughter’s car that has black fabric seats. There were flakes of my skin (I thought it was dust!) all over her seats! My doctor is trying to do blood work, but I can’t drive there, so I keep canceling. She mentioned this, so I’ve been taking iron supplements, and I hope I can function soon! THANK YOU!
Oh my, I absolutely love that you included the difference in checking for iron deficiency/ how it presents in people with more melanin. It’s such an important topic in medicine! Love to see it!
I’m a doctor (qualified 3 years ago) and they often teach conditions only in white skin. This is terrible because many conditions appear differently in darker skin tones which means they are more likely to be missed and more likely to die.
UA-cam won’t allow me to link the petition but there is a petition you can sign called “Medical schools must include BAME representation in clinical teaching”. You are more than welcome to sign. We have reached 200,000 signatures.
I experienced many symptoms of iron deficiency for so many years. My hair was thinning, my skin went from oily to extremely dry, vertical nail ridges, and MAJOR problems with no energy. I saw multiple Dr’s and no one could figure out what was wrong. They all did the common blood tests, but everything was normal. It wasn’t until a new Dr tested my ferritin that I got an answer. My ferritin was a 7! Wish I had known to ask for that test!
How did they treat it - just iron supplement? My ferritin has been below 10 for over two years. Several times the lab has not been able to detect it. One of my doctors says I need transfusions, but my other doctors say ferritin doesn't matter unless Hgb is very low. I do have symptoms; that's why it was checked initially.
@@cicir423 if they won’t get you in for a transfusion, some of them will suggest supplementing. It usually takes months of supplementing though to get levels back up. It’s such a pain. You also have to be very careful not to go overboard if you’re not being monitored.
My ferritin is 44.4 - units ng/ml reference range vast at 4.63 to 204.00. Methodology CMIA. 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ if anyone can explain as I’m still low at this level right?
Its amazing how some primary care docs down play iron deficiency, in my experience. Even if it wasn't extreme, it still makes a huge difference when left untreated for a long time.
Agree! I had to do a blood panel to get on low dose accutane. When I went back to look at the test results from early 2020, my iron levels were so low then too, but my doctor never mentioned it as a concern.
@Sandra R Wow, that's negligent. We have to be on top of these doctors sometimes, unfortunately. They just give you very basic info usually and I have to ask a million questions. Learn so much from Dr. Dray😃
@Elisa Holland Well, depends on what issue. Usually I feel so much better right after infusions, like energy wise. Not out of breath or feeling that head 4ush when you get up from the floor or kneeling down. My nakls and hair got better months later I could see the nails improving. I had waves on a few finger nails that were there forever and after months I noticed they were gone. Had no idea it was because of that.
the skin infection thing is so real... when I was super anemic my acne got so much worse and wouldn't heal. A couple weeks after starting iron my skin starting clearing back up.
Thank you! I have been struggling with anemia all through the pandemic as my gyno provider closed in 2020 and I went without care for a long time. While I knew most of these symptoms were part of anemia, angular cheilitis was a new one to me and I had dealt with that too with no explanation. It's very distressing to have all of these random things happening while you're trying to be strong, keep moving forward, and live your life in a pandemic. Putting all of the pieces together and knowing it's not all in my head is very validating and empowering. Thank you.
The pandemic had me all messed up too. Parenting, working(closed for 2mos), stressed out to the max. It was a complete shit show and did a number on my nerves. I began shedding in 2021 really bad. Then it never stopped. Gor covid in 2022 and it ramped up from there. More hair loss... Today I just started an Iron supplement hoping I can reverse some of this damage. Hope you're well 💕
I have struggled with anemia most of my life. A nurse told me that drinking OJ with iron pills will help your body absorb it because of the vitamin C. I try to eat a lot of beets too. Even with prenatal vitamins, I was very anemic during my pregnancies. I also have mitral valve prolapse which makes me more lethargic. I have always had hard cycles and bled a lot. Dry heaving, horrible intense pain, cold sweats were a normal monthly part of my cycles before having babies. Men have it sooooo easy. I can't wait for menopause!
Menopause is horrible too so be careful what you wish for. I’m on bio identical hormones now so it’s better but insomnia and hot flashes were ruining my life.
For me, my low iron was due to the fact that I was consuming gluten and gluten in my body inhibits iron absorption. Had very dry skin and fainting spells from time to time. Would also feel lightheaded if you squat down and get back up. Cutting out gluten and taking iron supps once in a while helps.
Same for me!! I never realized I had a gluten intolerance until I started getting acne all over my cheeks that I had never experienced, constant bloating and stomach aches, and constipation. (Sorry, TMI) In conjunction with that. Hair loss, dry itchy skin, extremely low energy, mood swings. I finally got Blood Builder and cut dairy and gluten for good measure. It is like night and day difference.
The best I ever felt was cutting out dairy and gluten. I went from wanting to stay home all the time and being exhausted and hiding from everyone to smiling and wanting to go out and wanting to socialize because of more energy. That lasted about a week and my husband brought home a pizza and I gave in and slowly went back to eating whatever. But I will never forget that amazing week of feeling my energy return which makes me think about trying it again.
I keep being tested for celiac which is coming up negative, but I suspect that gluten is playing a role in my severe iron deficiency. I also have a host of stomach problems like constantly. Hmmm.
I've always struggled with low iron anemia because of heavy menstrual cycles. Tried to go the natural route, but my doctor was too concerned that my organs would start to shut down and put me on birth control. Though I don't love being on hormones, it has helped a lot and I'm now back to normal iron levels. The pica is real though, I craved ice like it was a drug!
I wrecked my teeth so badly chomping on ice during the second pregnancy. It was a compulsion that was so hard to resist, and I failed resisting most of the time.
@@lisamarierosso2713 they stop the heavy bleeding which is causing the low iron levels. If you take birth control pills for birth control, there will be no noticeable difference in your iron levels. Anything that can stop the heavy bleeding will stop the heavy loss of iron.

I have low iron and this explains so much of all my problems. The skin itching I always thought was allergies but I hope it will improve with iron supplements. Thanks for making the video.
I had sarcoma cancer that took part of my stomach & 7" of my bowel, the part of bowel to take in iron & I no longer have it. So I have to get iron infusions every 2 years. I'm lactose & gluten intolerant. Only eat organic & drink only Fiji water. No sugar or sodas & no fast foods. This is a life time thing now.
My only clue to being iron deficient was an growing craving for ice chips. I had had exceedingly heavy periods for years, yet none of the doctors i had consulted ever thought of checking my iron levels. I read about a link between ice chip cravings and low hemoglobin on the Mayo Clinic website and asked to be tested. By the time i returned home after giving blood for the test, my doctor's office had left a message that i required an emergency blood transfusion because my blood count had decreased so much. I had no other symptom except feeling tired "in my bones" and craving ice.
I had dark circles under my eyes since I was little. I stopped all dairy about 5 years ago, and they have never been dark since! I found out I am lactose intolerant
Yes I suffer from iron deficiency and I’ve had several iron infusions and blood transfusions. It’s an ongoing process and I don’t know why my body doesn’t absorb iron very well. I just hope one day I will be able to stop the problem.
Low blood pressure was my main symptom for YEARS! Under 90/60 most of the time with close call fainting episodes. I was told I had hypotension. Found out accidentally when eating molasses (iron/copper/magnesium) cookies for two weeeks. My previous consistent 88/ 58 (or lower) for 10+ years on a good day went almost immediately to 111/71 on average days. The type of iron matters! Time to rethink the way the medical industry operates.
My wife has been struggling with impetigo for over 6 months. This makes so much sense. I wish our dermatologists pointed us in the right direction instead of endlessly feeding her antibiotics.
it is unfortunate the hemoglobin dr doesn't give more information to patients. Did you hem dr. discuss your GI track? Did your hem dr ask you if you eat calcium w iron? the two don't mix. Calcium will absolutely stop iron from binding. Did your hem dr ask you about your periods? instead of just treating iron deficiency anemia it would be more helpful to get to the source.
@@nmjime5560 I do have trouble digesting things but my menstrual cycle is the main issue, and my ferritin is actually worse off than my hemoglobin. I have had several iron infusions but unfortunately developed an allergy to them :(
I was about to make an appointment with my son's doctor to have his iron levels checked because his big toe nails are spoon nails - thank you for pointing out that this is completely normal in young children! :)
I had restless leg syndrome at night for quite a while before my OB/GYN tied it to low iron. I started taking supplements and the RLS disappeared. Great video!
My RLS has been absolutely awful these past few months (I used to get it every so often but not nightly like I do now). I had a full panel of bloodwork done last week and most of my numbers point to iron deficiency anemia. I really hope the RLS gets better when I get my iron back up 😩
I had RLS so bad I was barely sleeping. I was referred to a hematologist for other blood draw results but the hematologist identified only low ferritin. I got on iron and it took a few months but the RLS is 99% improved. I would complain to every doctor I'd see that RLS was my biggest problem. No one checked for iron until the hematologist. Ask for the test.
I had the same issue. Still do at times. I have anemia and have to stay on top of my supplements. The RLS can be sooo irritating! I've noticed it gets worse when I'm really tired and also certain cold medications set it off.
Fantastic info! Wish I would have known this while caring for my mother-in-law. Her dementia made it a bit difficult to diagnose when to go to a doctor, and she needed blood transfusions a few times due to low iron. I could have (a) gotten her treated sooner, and (b) looked to see if other symptoms (like itch, dry skin, etc) resolved shortly after the transfusion (thus possibly sparing her unnecessary visits to other doctors for those symptoms). But, now I know. Thank you Dr. Dray. It is obviously you care about not just your career, but specifically people well being. Thanks!
I've had the strongest desire to eat chalk (pica) for years and I recently learned I have iron deficiency! Watching this video, my super dry skin, spoon nails and hair loss make so much more sense.
In parts of Africa where I grew up pregnant ladies eat the soil from termite tunnels built on trees. Fascinating link to needing more iron in the diet.
Thank you so much. This should be the go to video on iron. So many people told me to take iron, but I don't have these symptoms, but I'm beyond exhausted all day, every day, and feel like my body is dying. I'm calling my Dr back if I can stay awake during business hours. I'm going crazy. But I think to many people jump to advise you take iron, but to much iron can affect your liver, heart and also present with fatigue.
I cant beleive your doing this video. I just took my mom to hosp for her iron being so low. Thank you for this. They are trying to determine if its do to loss of blood somewhere. Wow. Thank you Dr! I forwarded this to mom and shared. Xoxo dana
I was recently diagnosed with low iron, low hemoglobin, currently on iron supplements for past 1.5 months, had iron through an IV as well, it definitely helped, iron supplements must be taken on an empty stomach, no food, tea, coffee etc for a minimum of an hr otherwise it interferes with proper absorption. We'll see where my levels are at mid Feb, hope to see positive results. Due to ckd I can't eat red meat.
Excellent information here! I've been gradually seeing some shifts of this over the last year or so. This is super helpful. My integrative doctor has recommended VerVita Black Cumin Seed oil. And, I believe two things I was doing may have played in as well: 1) Taking Vit D3/K2 liquid 10,000 IU AM and PM over the last year perhaps made my calcium too high thus blocking iron absorption; 2) Not soaking my almonds high in phytic acid which blocks iron absorption which I eat daily. Finally, some other bacterial/pathogenic infections I am working to clear with various protocols (Dr. Bob Beck's protocol of micropulsing, magnetic pulsing, ozone water and ionic collidial silver) are probably also a factor. I've battled staph and skin boils on/off since I was 12. This information is invaluable. Thank you!
Interesting. My girlfriends and I were just talking about this about 2 weeks ago. One of them was very low on iron & since she's been taking supplements, her energy level & overall well being has finally gone back to somewhat normal.
I appreciate this video so much! Thank you Dr. Dray! Ive been suffering from hives and hair lossfor 2 yrs and now i just realize i have anemia. Noyone has ever made the connection between these 2.
This video is great. My doc recently ran tests that showed my body was not utilizing iron at an appropriate rate. I had several of these symptoms, but no one had linked it to iron before her. You both are a blessing to those of us who just want answers.
I had iron deficiency and due to this I got dark circles under my eyes and I feel tired and short of breath while going on stairs. Also my muscles are aching at night. But after taking iron tables I feel better.
My ferritin was 1 when I was showing all these symptoms my pcp said it wasn’t related, days after my 1st iron infusion they were gone. I had pagophagia, angular cheilitis, pale eyelids. And a lot more. Thank you for this video
I had a blood transfusion which did nothing. Eventually I had a partial hysterectomy and now still take iron daily. Ferritin slowly increased. Heavy periods were the problem. No chest pains. Make sure take iron with calcium for better absorption. Good luck.
I have been seeing a Naturopathic doc for almost two years. Recently had my ferritin levels checked. I was at a 6. I have no low iron symptoms whatsoever. We are currently treating my low iron with supplements and diet. I had a postpartum hemorrhage with my first pregnancy 15 years ago. I had high Candida a year ago and an h. Plyori infection last year, too.
My symptoms were subtle too. Looking back, I would get dizzy when I stood up, wanted to go to bed early, and craved ice crunching. I eat foods rich in iron, no idea why I don’t absorb it. I’m five months in of six months of prescription iron supplements.
@@sandrar6670 no mix it with calcium. calcium stops iron (non hem and hem) from being absorbed. and don't mix it with polyphenols either. don't take NSAIDS too much, they cause tiny tears after long term use and a regular endoscopic exam might miss that, ask for a Capsule. Thanks for this informative and educational video! I suffered anemia (including the signs that dr dray mentioned) during my horrible high school days due to heavy period ,which leads me to anemia, ovarian cysts and bleeding disorder. My blood pressure went so low that I almost lost my precious life but thankfully I’m admitted to A&E with roughly 5/6 bags of blood transfusions.Since my discharged, I make sure I eat more healthy balanced diet & lifestyle whenever I can and took iron tablets only when my blood pressure were not good or on the third day of my period. Please don’t ever try take anemia lightly. Signs I struggled are: hair loss, purple nail, dizziness, shortness of breath, pale skin and gum, weakness.coldness etc.
Darn…I am taking my anemia lightly. It’s always treated so…I don’t know, it’s so common! Take iron! But I know mine is really bad and know I need treatment ASAP.
I have all of the symptoms you described but they’ve gotten much worse as of late. Are used to run a lot and now I can’t even run anymore I don’t have any energy. I get dizzy and pale I’m always cold… years ago my doctor told me I was anemic. But I don’t wanna take iron bells because they make you constipated
This is really informative and I’m learning a lot. In regards to the itching I think what is happening is that people with anemia may also have parasites. The parasites are leaching the blood and nutrients, which is causing the anemia and leaving whatever chemicals a residue which causes the itching. What do you think?
How do I know if what I’m taking is enough? I have dry skin, mostly my legs, and struggle with staying hydrated even though I drink adequate water. The itchiness, dry hair, occasional excessive hair shedding, boils under arms, fungal skin infections and yeast all hit home for me as I’ve had these things occur over the years. I had no idea that collectively this may have been due to low iron. I knew about the fatigue and that was typically what I went by, but the fatigue was probably not the first sign and if I was feeling fatigued I was likely dealing with one of more of the other issues.
As someone studying to become an RD, I really appreciate these very quick recaps of all the physical manifestations for all the micronutrients! Thank you!
When I had my knee replacement, a few years back, I had to give two pints of blood, as an autologous donation, with two weeks between the first and second pint. When I had my pre-operative lab tests performed, my primary care physician called me up and told me I could not go into surgery with my blood count that low. I explained that I had just donated my own blood, two pints in two weeks. She replied that it might not be enough, considering how much I would lose during and after surgery. Sure enough, my blood pressure tanked two days after surgery, and the two pints I’d donated in advance were not enough to bring my blood pressure up to normal. I went into surgery anemic from the autologous donation, and thus needed a pint of someone else’s blood to bring my blood volume, and my blood pressure, back to normal.
Whenever I had a massive amount of blood loss through cycles. It was uncanny how I started to crave ice and lettuce, especially iceberg lettuce! I also drank lots of coffee for energy, but it didn’t work after a while. Then I started eating coffee beans and that didn’t work after a while. My doctor also said that one of the medication said I was taking made iron less absorbable. The deficiency stopped after I got a hysterectomy. The only other time that my Pica cravings came back afterward was when I had about of ulcerative colitis, and I lost a lot of blood. Just about all of the things that this doctor said that happens regarding symptoms, I had them
This was really interesting to me! I work with pts with lots of issues with hemoglobin levels and it's so helpful to know more about some of the dermatological signs of low iron.
very informative. did not know that iron deficiency affected skin and hair loss! was told that part of my issue with chronic headaches and my craving for ice were possible signs or iron deficiency. since i've been taking an iron supplement daily for anemia for almost 4 years, i have had very little in the way of itching, i don't crave ice as much, and the only headaches i have anymore are due to the changes in weather. i'm also not losing nearly as much hair as i realized i was prior to taking the supplement!
Great info on this topic. My body does not absorb iron in any "normal" way. I have been getting iron infusions for nearly 15 years now, every 4 weeks. As I am getting older and the IV iron does not seem to be holding at a good level for as long as it did years before, my skin is becoming drier and my hair is getting thinner. Thanks for the info again....it may help someone who has a issue like mine and doesn't realize it.🙂
are you bleeding internally? it's odd that an infusion doesn't last and you drop back that low in less than a year. Maybe ask your GI dr for a Capsule Endoscopy- that looks deeper into the small intestine than a regular endoscopic exam.
@@realhousewifeoftransylvania1.0 yeah, it's crazy. usually people very low only need an infusion yearly. I wish doctors took the time to exam why an infusion is needed in the first place. Hemoglobin drs need to work with GI doctors, as a team. Too often in the USA doctors don't work together with a patient.
@@nmjime5560 Over the years, I have had many....upper and lower. That is one of the first things they do, when you have this issue. My body will just not absorb iron...it is a thing many people have. Thanks so much dr dray. You answered all my symptoms. U confirmed everything is due to my anemia. No wonder. You're the only one who completely explained it. Not even my doctors did. You are a blessing ❤
Thanks for this Video Dr. Dray! Your comprehensive breakdown of iron deficiency symptoms provides crucial information beyond the commonly known fatigue and weakness. The detailed explanation of visible signs - from pale skin and dark circles to spoon nails and angular cheilitis - helps viewers identify potential iron deficiency early. Your inclusion of less obvious symptoms like itching and increased skin infections makes this guide particularly valuable for early detection.
This is so helpful! I have pretty bad ulcerative colitis and in the last couple years my skin has become so dry, bumpy and itchy with lichen nitidus. I've also gotten so many cysts and staph infections all over plus dry/damaged hair. Time to get on an iron supplement I guess.
Thank you for this video, especially clarifying "pallor." I have microcytic, iron-deficiency anemia due to short menstrual cycles and heavy bleeding, and poor irin n absorption. One very important factor that doctors usually don't consider in adults is consuming large amounts of tea and, to a lesser extent, coffee. These beverages have components that bind to iron and prevent its absorption. There is a case study of a 46yo man who developed severe microcytic anemia due entirely to his habit of drinking an average of 6 cups of tea a day, 5 days a week.
@@ElizabethBattle That's what I figured. Thanks for confirming! I actually don't like any tea, but I'm trying to drink the fruity concoctions instead of soda or high-calorie juices at least some of the time...

Dr Dray, I so appreciate your description of how pallor presents itself in those of us with darker skin tones. Unfortunately some doctors do not take into account that we can have different visual presentations of a condition.
It was found that I was anemic when I was admitted into hospital with kidney failure for 10 days ,coming out of hospital I was put on vitaminB12 and iron tablets which I have to take for 6months ,but the problem is this was a Nephrologist that put me on it ,and now I would need to buy over the counter which will be better iron tablets or vitamin B12 or both ,because I have most of the symptoms explained here ,having blood transfusion is out of the question ,because I have a rare blood group .
Thank you for such a thorough breakdown of this topic, you are an excellent teacher - pace, delivery, enough detail for us to understand and not so much to bamboozle. You come across as a natural explainer but I'm sure that's due to the research and planning you do beforehand. Learnt a lot from this and your other skin care videos 👍👍👍
Currently pregnant - 18 weeks- and experiencing almost every symptom except instead of itch, it feels more like restless leg syndrome. Taking an iron prescription to feel better soon. The sore in the corner of my lips/ mouth was the first thing to heal so far 👍 Thankfully I’ve figured this out in previous pregnancies so I knew to ask for an iron check and prescription. The key for me is to take the prescription with a glass of orange juice as vitamin c helps absorption and with a big meal that doesn’t have dairy. Dairy inhibits absorption. The big meal helps me not throw up the iron pill as it is hard on the stomach
I'm loving these videos and am amazed at how much vitamin deficiencies can affect the skin and hair. Thanks so much for the hard work and research. Happy Thursday, Dr Dray! I hope you have a tranquil evening. 💙

My husband had a terrible back itch. He has had bladder cancer for over 12 years. He had a bad fall in October and had lots of X-rays and a ct scan. One of the X-rays showed a dark area on his lungs. After a lot more resting, the oncologist found that he now has “bladder cancer of the lungs”. We had been told his cancer was transitional and would not spread to other parts of his body. He has been going through infusion treatments for the cancer and has had two iron infusions. He hardly has any back itch at all now. We did not know this could be a side effect of iron deficiency.
I had sore corners of my lips and tounge. I craved ready salted crips and ate upto 3 x 25 gram bags per day (not very comfortable with a painfiul mouth!) I alao had RLS which alerted my doctor. I had very low iron levels and had to have a blood transfusion and IV iron. I'm now on iron tablets every day, I take the iron tablet with a soluble vitamin C tablet drink to assist absorption and avoid tea & coffee at least half an hour before and after taking them. Tea, coffee and dairy inhibits absorpsion of iron. I haven't eaten ready salted crisps since a few weeks after having the IV iron and starting the iron tablets.
Excellent video!!! I had a scary syncope incident last month during a heavy period. Turns out my iron was very low. My lethargy, itchy skin, hair loss, which I thought were due to aging or other causes, now are explained. The tip on checking the lower inner eyelid is super useful. I've taking my supplements and iron-rich foods, but it seems I'm not out of the woods. Thank you for this video.👏
Oh my goodness thank you so much for this video. I have skin infections, dry skin, and dry hair bc of my iron deficiency. I expected the hair and dry skin issue but skin infections I never knew was related to my iron deficiency. This is motivating me to do better with taking my vitamins and following my PCP instructions on seeing the hematologist for infusions. Thank you so much!!!!
Thank you for the education. I have been working really hard to keep my hgb up. It seems with having a series of hip infections, 3, it has been a work in progress.. Hgb was as low as 6.2 after 3rd surgery and rcvd 2 units of blood. Today happy to report it's a resounding 11. I will implement some of your suggestions.⚘
Fighting for almost 50 years. Had multiple blood transfusion, folate acid meds. I’m Thalassemia Beta minor along with iron deficiency (can’t absorb it). The one that drives me crazy is the shortness of breath (everyone tell me why I’m breathing so hard), rapid heart beat, lightheaded and numbness in the hand and feet. I do get Charlie Horses in my calf to many times when I’m asleep. Also I tend to bleed easy and can’t control it (I think it’s from overdose). I have past it to my son he was diagnosed at 3 year old and he is on Iron supplements. I feel like the older I get the more it gets allot worst.
I have a hiatal hernia which caused Cameron stomach ulcers, restless leg syndrome, hair loss, rosecea flair worsening, superficial thrombosis, pica, iron deficiency anemia from bleeding Cameron ulcers, painful tongue and more. Had iron infusions and finally going to get my hernia fixed and Nissen Fundoplication. So interesting that all these conditions are rooted in my hiatal hernia.
Another excellent educational video, gastroenterology nurse here who sees lots of iron deficiency, I’m btw plant based and my iron studies are excellent. My diet is far better than when I ate meat 😀
I have Crohn’s disease. And recently my skin has been itching a lot, I have zero energy. I stopped running which I used to run at least five days a week. Years ago they told me I was anemic. But I don’t wanna take iron pills they constipate me.
@@HH-gv8mx I get a bottle of water and put honey and lime juice from fresh limes in it and drink that but I have to keep it up because my iron levels will deplete over time. So I hope u try it and see if it works. It definitely gives me more energy too. It started working fully within two weeks tho. I also made 3 bottle a day
Good video! I have a MPN (polycythemia Vera). Due to weekly phlebotomy my iron stays extremely low that I’m extremely anemic. I get the itch, fatigue, hair fall out, dry skin, headache and dizziness. Being Low iron causes difficult breathing for me too.
I had no clue all of this can be tied into low iron. I was literally watching this video as my jaw is opened because you broke things down in such an informative and understanding way I was in awe. Thank you!!!! I have had some of the things you have mentioned so I feel it is a double or triple whammy. Honestly you really are helping so many people, thank you, thank you!!!! 💗

So….THOSE BALD PEOPLE ARE LOW IN IRON?
Oh god that me 😩
fast breathing from slow walking, faster heart rate when just walking, Being cold all the time and almost fainting when making sudden movements (dizzy standing from sitting) can be signs of iron deficiency too.
My symptoms exactly
Can I ask what has helped you?
My symptoms too
@starlite7785 iron infusion
That’s me alright
I had a Ferritin level of 3. I couldn't walk upstairs without being winded and my heart started going into tachycardia randomly. I was miserable and barely able to function. 2 iron infusions later, I felt good again. Never neglect your health. I never will again
What caused your iron deficiency?

I have the same thing with the heart it's horrible on the left side. I take iron tablets above the recommend amount. I don't think one tablet a day works for ppl like us with severe anemia. I feel my iron gets depleted in hot weather also any iron I accumulate during non period days get depleted again on my period. Do I'm popping iron pills to survive
How did the infusions go? Did you get side effects ?
I was soooo tired after my period I started iron tablets and am doing better now 😊
Were you deficient in iron and ferritin? How many mg did you take daily?
I had all over itch and was going crazy. Went to my doctor, got tests done and had bad anemia. She then refered me for a colonoscopy and unfortunately I was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Itchiness was the only symptom I had. So please, everyone, look for medical assistant even if you think it may be nothing too serious...
I'm so sorry to hear about that. I hope you are doing well.
Hi try looking in to fresh parsley tea

Good info! Thanks!
Did you end up with the blood transfusion? How are you managing your anemia?
Thanks for watching
heavy periods can cause it. internal bleeds from ulcers or small tears from NSAIDs abuse. low stomach acid as well. or mixing certain foods that stop iron from being absorbed, eg calcium or anti-oxidants.
@@nmjime5560 also drinking alcohol can cause it.
Have you tried ferrous bisglycinate form of iron. It has one of the best absorption when taken with vitamin c
Wow had no idea either...
But did your blood tests say you were fine while Vegan? I'm curious.
I'm going to write a bit about it in case it helps:
The thing that surprised me the most is: DON'T consume coffee, tea or chocolate before OR after eating (2 hours before and after), it won't let it absorb.
I appreciate you being vegan, but maybe for you to feel better, consider three arrows heme iron. Hope you feel better soon, I know how you feel.❤️
@@lisab.2081 There are liquid iron supplements like Floridix that are more absorbable.
Lack of sodium can do you in just as well, too!

@@koachcarter5678Are you ok now? What was the reason??
Thank you for addressing iron deficiency symptoms in darker skin tones- as an RN this was never taught in nursing school.
Yes it was, in later years
@@aphroditeg2712 and how do u know when she went to school? To say yes it was "in later years".
Most of this information is not taught at all in nursing school.
That's very odd. A basic blood test always checks ferritin levels especially if you tell your doctor your feeling extreme fatigue
Did any of experience shortness of breath and chest pain?
Dray😃
Takes a long time to recover too, even after levels are restored. I’m told up to 2 yrs.
@@realhousewifeoftransylvania1.0 For sure, I’ve had critical improvements quickly as well, but certain effects take longer to fully recover I’m told.
A reminder that gluten sensitivity is different from gluten allergy. They both can cause anemia and gluten sensitivity is really hard to diagnose.
the skin infection thing is so real... when I was super anemic my acne got so much worse and wouldn't heal. A couple weeks after starting iron my skin starting clearing back up.
Good to know! My skin and hair hate me right now
@@sherirottweilersforever7772 my mom went through it with no issues. Not everyone struggles lol
Menopause is not a disease and not horrible for all women. Learning your body and giving it what it needs during menopause can help.
For me, my low iron was due to the fact that I was consuming gluten and gluten in my body inhibits iron absorption. Had very dry skin and fainting spells from time to time. Would also feel lightheaded if you squat down and get back up. Cutting out gluten and taking iron supps once in a while helps.
Did you have dry skin especially on your face ?
Same for me!! I never realized I had a gluten intolerance until I started getting acne all over my cheeks that I had never experienced, constant bloating and stomach aches, and constipation. (Sorry, TMI)
In conjunction with that.
@@Angel-gb9gi its okay to cheat a little! But dont fall into old habits. Your body and mind will thank you 🥰
I keep being tested for celiac which is coming up negative, but I suspect that gluten is playing a role in my severe iron deficiency.
Yeah I had to go on birth control as well! It’s annoying to remember to take it everyday at the same time, but it’s way better than being anemic lol
I wrecked my teeth so badly chomping on ice during the second pregnancy. It was a compulsion that was so hard to resist, and I failed resisting most of the time.
I never heard about birth control pills raising your iron levels 🤔
@@lisamarierosso2713 they stop the heavy bleeding which is causing the low iron levels. If you take birth control pills for birth control, there will be no noticeable difference in your iron levels. Anything that can stop the heavy bleeding will stop the heavy loss of iron.

I have low iron and this explains so much of all my problems. The skin itching I always thought was allergies but I hope it will improve with iron supplements. Thanks for making the video.
Did the itching feel like bites?
Wow .. I have never come across so much depth on iron deficiency .. thanks a lot. You are very knowledgeable Doc.
I had dark circles under my eyes since I was little. I stopped all dairy about 5 years ago, and they have never been dark since! I found out I am lactose intolerant
Huh interesting.
Restless leg syndrome is also tied to low levels of iron. Not quite in the deficiency range for some - even just lower levels can result in RLS.
Exactly.
“The itch” is such a real thing and I’ve never been able to explain it 😮
My wife has been struggling with impetigo for over 6 months. This makes so much sense. I wish our dermatologists pointed us in the right direction instead of endlessly feeding her antibiotics.
Have your wife get a blood test done. Tell them to check for iron and blood disorder. They can determine it.
I’ve dealt with chronic anemia and have seen hematologists for years and I didn’t even know some of these! Thank you for making this!
it is unfortunate the hemoglobin dr doesn't give more information to patients.
Shame on your doctors

My RLS has been absolutely awful these past few months (I used to get it every so often but not nightly like I do now). I had a full panel of bloodwork done last week and most of my numbers point to iron deficiency anemia. I really hope the RLS gets better when I get my iron back up 😩
RLS is the worst! They have these vibrating devices that help when ppl have nothing left that helps.
@@carlyjulie9461 I can certainly empathize. I hope things get better for you!
Thanks!

Great reminder especially for me working in ED/ER for tips for low iron in people of Colour eg the palms !
Thank you!

I had a blood transfusion which did nothing. Eventually I had a partial hysterectomy and now still take iron daily. Ferritin slowly increased. Heavy periods were the problem. No chest pains. Make sure take iron with calcium for better absorption. Good luck.
@@julien4741 Calcium does not help iron absorption; it actually stops it! Best to take iron with vitamin C (e.g., orange juice) on an empty stomach
I also have Vitiligo. My spots surfaced in 2009 when I was pregnant with my second child.
Make sure you don't have h-pylori too. It messes with stomach acid, and 2. causes ulcers. Both will be made for iron absorption.
@@sandrar6670 vitamin c with your high iron meals helps too, could be a lemonade, orange juice and others fruits rich in vit. C or the actual vitamin c supplement and super important: Don't consume tea (only rooibos or herbal infusions), coffee or chocolate 2 hours after eating
@@nmjime5560 I Avoid NSAIDS, never take them even if I have a headache.
Funny you should mention h pylori, I just got my gut biome test results and I have it.
Thank you!
Doctors rarely test for this. Most would just prescribe an anti itch cream
I am anemic and it's a constant struggle to stay on top of. Thanks for this video!
My goodness i feel blessed that this was on my feed. The best advice thank you. I have low thyroid and my skin and hair is a confidence breaker.
I’ve suffered from low iron. Thank you this was very educational. I hope you’re also a medical professor because you excel at teaching
Thanks for the info again....it may help someone who has a issue like mine and doesn't realize it.🙂
So sorry to hear this hun 😥
are you bleeding internally? it's odd that an infusion doesn't last and you drop back that low in less than a year. Maybe ask your GI dr for a Capsule Endoscopy- that looks deeper into the small intestine than a regular endoscopic exam.
@norman jime You would think and hope that's the first thing they did. If not, wow.
At Texas Oncology, where I get my IV Iron, there are a good number of people that have the same issue.
Life changing. I never understood the symptoms. I try to donate platelets but struggle with my iron. Now I’ll know by these signs.
Thanks so much dr dray. You answered all my symptoms. U confirmed everything is due to my anemia. No wonder. You're the only one who completely explained it. Not even my doctors did. You are a blessing ❤
I totally agree. Most doctors don't go into detail about our conditions. They just write a prescription and send us off to the pharmacy.
I told my doctor so many of these symptoms and she never mentioned iron! Sucks that I need to get medical advice from UA-cam…
Would that be only real (black, green) tea or just any fruity concoction...? I'd imagine only real tea can cause that...
@mariad6519 Yes, only actual tea from the Camelia sinensis shrub. :)
@@ElizabethBattle
That's what I figured. Thanks for confirming! I actually don't like any tea, but I'm trying to drink the fruity concoctions instead of soda or high-calorie juices at least some of the time...
@mariad6519 The vitamin C in those drinks will help you absorb iron! :)
@@ElizabethBattle
Yeah, I read about that. Thanks. Well, grapefruit juice with my morning coffee is a religious ritual I don't plan to give up on anyway... ;-) I'm not strict and disciplined when it comes to such things. In fact, I'm a rebel at heart and hate limitations of any kind... :-(
Dr Dray, I so appreciate your description of how pallor presents itself in those of us with darker skin tones.
The sore in the corner of my lips/ mouth was the first thing to heal so far 👍
Thankfully I’ve figured this out in previous pregnancies so I knew to ask for an iron check and prescription.
The key for me is to take the prescription with a glass of orange juice as vitamin c helps absorption and with a big meal that doesn’t have dairy. Dairy inhibits absorption. The big meal helps me not throw up the iron pill as it is hard on the stomach
A hearty yes for the science-y things! Thanks, Dr. Dray ♥️
❤️YES ❤️
My doctor told me my low iron level is responsible for my bad sleep/insomnia. What do you think?
I'm loving these videos and am amazed at how much vitamin deficiencies can affect the skin and hair. Thanks so much for the hard work and research. Happy Thursday, Dr Dray! I hope you have a tranquil evening. 💙
Good info..Tqsm. I am from Malaysia and been diagonised with 9.4 Hemoglobin so Anemic😢. Been having itchy skin, boils etc and now thanks to your info I understand better. TQSM
Thank you, doctor! Absolutely, please keep the nutritional deficiency videos coming! This, I think, should always the main places to start in wlth any health concern.
I'm impressed with this lady's knowledge.
Wow

I expected the hair and dry skin issue but skin infections I never knew was related to my iron deficiency. This is motivating me to do better with taking my vitamins and following my PCP instructions on seeing the hematologist for infusions. Thank you so much!!!!
Wow! I need to make sure I'm getting those correct amount of iron. Thanks!
My hair is super thin but I've been taking the vitamin D3 and my hair and skin looks so much better sense I took that.
I'm so sorry. A friend has this, and she struggles, too. Sending hugs

I have a hiatal hernia which caused Cameron stomach ulcers, restless leg syndrome, hair loss, rosecea flair worsening, superficial thrombosis, pica, iron deficiency anemia from bleeding Cameron ulcers, painful tongue and more. I have Crohn’s disease. And recently my skin has been itching a lot, I have zero energy. I stopped running which I used to run at least five days a week. Years ago they told me I was anemic. But I don’t wanna take iron pills they constipate me.
