I had acanthosis nigricans all over my face, neck, back, shoulders and sides of my arms for 20 years before I found out what it was. I was poor and NO ONE ever asked or gave advice; doctors and otherwise. People made fun though. "take off that mask, Halloween's over" or "you should stop doing drugs." It kinda still hurts. Early on, I thought it was sunburn, as it grew darker in contrast to my normal complexion, my social life got worse. My eyes began to darken and I thought I had cancer or something.
Let me support what Dr. Dray stated and has discussed previously; It was insulin resistance all along. Your skin is the largest organ on your body. When your insulin is consistently high like mine was (biscuit for breakfast, subway for lunch, pizza for dinner and soda with each), insulin became a poison and I believe it began to leech out of my skin in creased and weight-impacted areas (sitting and lying down).
Here's how I cleared it up starting back in 2019:
First, face it, some "foods" aren't foods. If you think a cupcake is food, stop eating them because they aren't. They cause a deficit in your body's structural nutrients. They cost too much to break down and the energy the yield is too short lived. That's why you crave more.
Next, I got my blood sugar down in three weeks without exercise (I couldn't, my knees and shoulders were so inflamed I thought I had arthritis) by not consuming added sugar of any kind; no cookies, no cakes, no soda pop and no snacking.
I refused to take insulin when it was prescribed (They called me prediabetic) because I believed that Diabetes was a disease of excess insulin so how could cramming more insulin help me (I thought; it's good to think for yourself)? Instead, I ate 1.5 meals a day between 1100 and 1600. I drank water and unsweetened tea along with a cocktail of vitamins by 1830 (Vitamin D and Zinc specifically). I forced myself to sleep by buying blackout curtains and turning off my tv by 2100.
Where I didn't have AN, I had strawberry or chicken skin. I bathed in 2 cups of ACV in a full bath and rubbed my wet skin (sloughing) with hypochlorous spray before drying off. The dead skin and gunk I rubbed off after bathing surprised me. That practice 3 times a week along with a rosemary/castor oil rubdown unblocked my pores; chicken skin dead after six months! The sloughing increased blood flow too.
AN cleared up everywhere after 19 months except for my face, but it's noticeably lighter. My testosterone went up too. What made me check is that my leg hair and arm hair began to grow and I lost less hair after combing my head hair. After noticing these changes (six months in), I asked for a test at my doctor's office and took another three months after. Remember, it took 20 years of this damage, it will not go away overnight.
In conclusion, I know this seems a bit personal. However, if anyone is still reading this it's likely a serious concern, problem or stigma. Yes, it happened to me and by visiting channels like this one (thank you DD) I learned enough to manage it on my own. I came from humble beginnings and couldn't afford to go to a dermatologist early in life. Today, I'm much better off and I'd like to help others via posts like this. DD is right. This is a great video and you'd be surprised, but all you need is this information (knowledge) and a little discipline, and you can heal yourself. It costs nothing to eat less and on a schedule. Don't drink water after 1830. The ultimate benefit is that it wasn't just my skin that cleared up. My shoulder and knee pain went away because the joint inflammation receded due to my diet. My kidneys healed and my liver function returned to normal. My regularity returned (you might have to restrict dairy) and so did my energy. As I write this, I feel as alone as when I dealt with all of the abuse, but my life is so much better I can take care of myself and I have my spirit back. You can too! Don't eat sugar for a week or two and you won't believe what your body will begin signaling to you! Good luck, I wish you a better journey than mine, but you have to start right now. No one can do it but you.

My husband has had diabetes for many years and has diabetic neuropathy and many of these skin conditions. One that I did not realize was part of his diabetes are the occasional blisters he gets. We have even visited doctors about them, but were never told that it was from his diabetes. I learned something! This is a very important message - skin care for a diabetic is so critical and can be very difficult.

Businesses should be made to include information booklets about diabetes, explaining it fully, with every product that contains high sugar/carbohydrates. People really are unaware of just how insidious and deadly diabetes is. Its only when they get sick and a diagnosis that they are made aware of just how damaging sugar is. In school you're just told to brush your teeth, I think the education surrounding sugar should go alot deeper than that. Doctors need to explain the severity, aswell as directing people to change diet along with medication.

"It's a serious disease and I do not wish it on anyone" Absolutely TRUE. What I see, again and again, is the fact that, probably because it's so common, that diabetes is being perceived "no big deal". IT IS a huge deal. Thanks for a very interesting, very informative video. I didn't know diabetes affected the skin to such an extent.

I’m one of those idiots who thought it wasn’t a big deal. A couple of years ago my blood work showed pre-diabetic and didn’t do anything. I was already struggling with severe depression, anxiety, chronic pain and low mobility. I was overweight and gained more. I can barely stand and walk, live alone, can’t cook and have no one to depend on. A couple of years later, I had my blood work done 3 days ago. To no surprise it shows I’m type 1 diabetic and issues with my heart. I’m seeing my doctor in a week, now that will be an interesting appointment. I already can’t deal with any stress, so I really don’t how I’m going to survive this! 🙏🏻

For anyone who hesitates getting the A1c, I urge you to do it. I was diagnosed after apparently being diabetic for a long time. It was too late for me; I have severe pancreatic atrophy and liver cirrhosis. I don't drink. They say my diabetes is killing my liver and it's irreversible. Don't put it off, get that test now and if you're diabetic follow your regimen extremely carefully so you have a long life.

Thannkk youuu! T1D here, and I found this INCREDIBLY valuable, because it helps me know what to look out for as I age. I'm a fairly well managed diabetic as of now, but I haven't always been, and luckily haven't experienced any of these skin conditions yet. Been watching your channel for just over a year now, and you always seem to have something new and valuable for me!

amazing video! I am an RT student and for clinical rotations im in the subacute where I noticed some of these findings. The candida and the oral yeast infectionsin the trached patients is very common and was refreshing to here that most of these findings come from diabetes. We mostly have been focusing on respiratory studies of course, but we only occasionaly touch on other issues in the body. It all effects every area in the end! Thanks for the medical class for diabetes 101 :)
