The reason the brush turns backwards, was so the cleaner doesn't seize the fringe on the oriental style area rugs of the day. The belt will jump off the pulley if the position is reversed, so the belt is actually on correctly with the brush revolving backwards.

no, that's the point. the whole motor turns backwards! so, the airflow and brush are in sync.
