Driveway washing in the pink Dexter double-tub

  • The activity was not limited to the basement. We also invaded Mike's driveway and ran the numerous machines he had out there for us, including the late-50's (1959 I think Gary said) Dexter double-tub wringer washer. Notice how one tub agitates slightly faster than the other. Gary said this was most likely due to the proximity of the transmission from the left-hand tub and that there is a sort of connecting shaft to drive the agitator. It is very fun machine to use. Taken at the Peoria Wash Party on July 9, 2011.

WOW!!! We grew up with a Dexter Twin-Tub from as long as I can remember (I was born in '52) till it finally wore out in the early 1960s...I want to say ours was built about 1949 or 1950, and it served a family of seven (five children) with very few hitches! Like the ads say, you could wash in one tub and rinse in the other (although Mom still had a separate wash tub full of water for a second rinse by hand)! Even caught my arm in the wringer once--and only once--but those Dexters were amazing.

Showed my Grandmother who got a big kick out of this video! they used to have a Double Dexter similar on farm in Nebraska back in the 1930's - kept it in the summer kitchen. in winter, there was no heat in there, so clothes would freeze as they tried to hang them up on the line. she just told me, "My mother would die if she saw us put those dark clothes in with those whites!" as she watched your video :) she also said they used both sides for washing and they had separate big rinse tubs. it was a big family with lots of laundry - but they sure didn't wear things just once before washing like we do today! thanks for posting!

Boy, these must have been the "cat's meow" back in the '50s! They are probably fairly heavy to move around, I assume. Funny, I could recognize Gary's voice immediately, even before reading the text!

That thing is awesome! I seen one of those at my Grandma's house. Had no idea what it was. This was in 1981 though.

Why is it so quiet and why can't they make machines this quiet anymore?

My old neighbor had one of these. We shared the same basement, (it was a duplex), and I never saw this being used. She had junk piled up all over it. I thought it was the wildest washer... with 2 tubs. But is one for wash? And one for rinse? (I never asked her).

Because your modern machine isn't a wringer, It has to be made to "spin" the clothes and so it isn't a quiet machine.

A Wash party? I wish I were there. I can just imagine all the wives laughing and pointing at their loonie husbands with their toys. Then they go back to the year 2012 and use a nice modern setup.

Aaaaaah those men CAN WASH CIRCLES AROUND ANYONE WHO DARES TO CHALLENGE THEM.
The black guy in the video is me at a beautiful and rare group of professional and very interesting folk who grew up in mechanics and been doing laundry at age 5.
The reason on the mixed load is they where from the thrift shop just to demonstrate the action if the 3 vaned Dexter agitator !
So was not being correct on separation . Which we are the MOST SEPARATE ON FABRICS It will make true racist folk look like liberals if that makes any since lol.
