Just as a thought - something I have been doing over the last year and it really helped me:
For each building, my "main" unit is mousewheel down, the "secondary" unit mousewheel up. For example in the stable: Main unit scouts = mousewheel down, secondary unit knights = mousewheel up. Camels on S, Battle Elephants and Steppe Lancers on A.
This has simplified unit making so much and I also have way less trouble maintaining military and villager production. it also did free up two additional hotkeys for other usage.
Fire Button on the mouse used as Shift, the most used key in AOE! That's amazingly useful, being always under my thumb.
Forward mouse button is select group 1.
Backwards mouse button is select group 2.
I use the supplemental keyboard buttons, G1 to G4 to select military buildings (baracks, archeries, stables, siege shops, castles) and G5 to select the blacksmit(s)
Windows Key selects the market.
I have Select all TCs in Caps Lock and really like it. I know you can make control groups but the Caps Lock key is so big and it's in the right place, it's really easy to press it while microing in the front
I have it on "5", your is better in theory
i have it on space bar and is very confortable
I have it as the Tilda key which is just to the left of 1. So it's like hotkey 0 (not the actual 0)

You can Overload the Same Key for two Actions when one Action is selection-dependent and another is not.
e.g. if have Q to build a Baracks (which only works when a villager is selected and you already clicked build) and Q to select all Baracks (which only works if nothing is selected that has another Q-buinding. e.g. Q is also Patrol for military units). Same for ArcheryRange, Stable and SiegeWorkshop.
This Way you dont have to move your hand that far.

As someone who uses mainly default hotkeys with some minor changes, this is totally different. Not having to press Ctrl+L for a stable is big, and I don't even know my select all idles hotkey. I would like to adopt some of these changes but changing them all at once might be confusing and not entirely necessary in some cases.

Edit: the default for all idle vills is Shift-, and idle military is Ctrl-, I don't think it gets much more inconvenient than that
Personal having delete on F1 for a long time already and prefer it there...
having mouse 3+4 with idle vil + go to tc, I am using this since I started playing again in April 2020, like it a lot.
using mouse 5 (smaller button next to left mouse, easy to access on my mouse) to select all tc´s
using mouse 6 to go to castle (another small button next to left mouse button, for me a bit harder to click, but ok)
mouse wheel up and down = go to barracks / range
i also changed to whole number keys on the right for e.g.:
7= all barracks
8 = all archery ranges
9 = all stables
4 = all siege workshops
5 = all castles
6 = all markets
1 = all visible mil. units
2 = all mil. units (also many ppl don't know if you hit it twice, u select all mil. water units)
3 = all trade units
have a detected key to select all idle vils too, using mainly in late game though
I don´t realy use the go to hotkeys too much, but sometimes I do and then its nice to have. Mainly I use ctrl groups for buildings, but sometimes I fuck up or forget to add one, then I simply press the select all buildings and make the ctrl group again - this helps me personally a lot swell
other then that using mainly the standard hotkeys, that's fine for me, just changed farm, house and walls (so I can use 2 different fingers to place the building, hope there was an inspiration for someone
I really need to revisit my hotkeys. Getting a good setup is a challenge because I want to keep at least 14 accessible control groups. I don't think I can use the f-keys because I'm on a laptop, but it's probably worth at least trying anyway. It would certainly help to have a few extra reachable hotkeys available.
Step 1: hold Alt, then press F4.

Hi Nili - thnkyou in advance. HOW DO YOU CHANGE THE DEFAULT TO DEFENSIVE STANCE? I dont see it anywhere in the options menu. and yes i have aoe2DE. thnkyou for your attention herer. i appreciate it as its a game changer. _Tom
What are you using Spacebar for? Or did I miss it?
I have my TC/ select all TC set to spacebar/Shift Spacebar.

hey I have a question how do you know how to click the group 4 or group 5. Its' hard to know the difference between them.

Something I don't quite understand is that the number keys are "select control group", but it doesn't actually take you to them. So does everyone press for example "1" and then their hotkey for "go to selected unit"? If so, what hotkey do you have for "go to selected unit"? If not, how do you play?? 11

What is the benefit of making Control groups for military buildings?
I am using "Select all" hotkeys. So for example I want to make 10 Hussars --> Shift + S (select all Stables), Shift + Q,Q (create 10 Hussars). It feels faster for me.. :)
But Pros are using Control groups for stables, etc. Warum?
You might want to have groups of military buildings with different waypoints, for example, a few sneaky stables near the enemy base to constantly spam hussars into their eco. Then you can use select all for queueing up hussar everywhere, but only use your control group to redirect them to your main army.

This has happened to me in the past as well, my personal method now is to strictly avoid any AOE related webpages/twitter/youtube etc whatsoever until I'm finished whatever tourney I'm watching. I recommend you keep going with RBW5 though, there are some truly out of this world sets in there so you won't be disappointed!
@@nat4241 I too was employing that technique, not reading comments etc. however, that doesn't help if a video's content alludes to recent tournament outcomes.
