I've owned like four different copies of AOE2 over the years. I used to play it as a little kid - just liked going into scenario mode and smashing the armies into one another :) I still don't own DE (just HD), but like a week ago I decided I finally want to actually learn how to play. I had never learned hotkeys or unit counters or build orders or anything like that; I just sort of clicked through menus and took my time and built up my base. I like the idea of putting your left hand on home row and typing the hotkeys just like you're just typing your keyboard - I'm so used to WASD for video games that I sort of automatically set up that way, but knowing the layout now makes setting up on home row is really intuitive and should make things a lot easier to press. Never even stopped to consider that there was a method to the madness with the hotkey layouts when I started trying them this week - I was way too busy stressing about the AI murdering me :D Edit: Actually, when you play, do you keep your fingers on ASDF or WASD? Building units seems easier from ASDF but WASD seems like it might be easier for the CTRL + SHIFT stuff.

Very helpful setup, I didn't even notice the hotkeys for buildings were in order of keyboard. qwert,asdfg etx xD totally made it all much easier! as well as not grouping cavalry with infantry and siege, just little things a new player like me totally missed. All upgrade buildings on 5 just such a good short concise video thank you.
I can’t assign the tilde key for idle villagers instead of the period key. My computer simply doesn’t recognize the key. Has anyone had the same problem?
I set up a control group for a unit and now I keep seeing the control group set to this unit. I dont want any unit to be set to the control group 1. And I cant remove the control group. I thought maybe right clicking on the control group but that doesnt work. If I have a control group set to 1 and a control group set to 2. I can right click one of those groups, and that group gets deleted from the control groups. But I keep having atleast 1 control group. To me a bit annoying. Wish there was a way to completely clear the control groups, so that all 0-9 are unbound.
I have been playing this game on my Xbox for definitive edition but I don’t know how to delete buildings on Kbm delete button won’t work so I need your opinion please

How the hell do I change "Select all idle workers" from "Shift+."? Even if I change both of the keys for select all idle works it still only works with "Shift+." which is pretty awful. It's like it's hard coded into the game?!
I can change it as I want. Perhaps there are problems with your game installation/player profile, or the file for the hotkeys is maybe in read-only, or something along those lines...

I mostly play Starcraft2 and Remastered. I really want to play AOE series of games but the units are just too tiney for a low vision like me.
@@Eric-dd8bk Definitive edition has an hd dlc that comes for free that lets you zoom in pretty close to the map now

For group 5, how are you selecting all the markets, monasteries, etc.?

Press ctrl and select all the buildings you want. Then ctrl + 5

Try pressing the key twice, when you are assigning it.

Been playing for years, but I learned a lot. Your explanation of the hot keys was simple and direct.
So how do you assign then select a control group?
Example: Ctrl+1 to assign, than press 1 to select the control group.
