I've been playing this game on and off since I was a kid and as a Bulgarian I can't say how plesantly surprised I am that there is a Bulgarian civ and campaign. I'm so happy that this community is still so active and that the devs are continuing to show it love and support, incredibly underrated game!
Indeed. Age of Empires 1 and 2 were the first computer games I ever played (before we even had a computer at home) and the first ones that got me hooked and made me interested in strategy games in general. I remember how almost 20 years ago I was discussing with friends rumours about a hidden Bulgarian civ or how it's being made for a new expansion or as some kind of a mod. And now those rumours are finally coming true!
Oddly enough Ivaylo was probably not a regular farmer, most likely a powerful Despot who's crest was that of a Warthog. Possible missinterpretation by the Byzantine Chronicler who named him so. Its a very fairy tail-ish interpretation but a welcome one. Odd that they didnt choose more prominent rulers like Krum, Simeon or Kaloyan.

I am the designer of this campaign and Ivaylo's personal story -- how it has come down in history, whether misinterpreted or not -- struck me as a powerful one to share with Age of Empires players. Bulgaria's history is unfortunately not very well known outside of that country. I thought focusing on a character that wasn't just another king would resonate with players from around the world. The life of a common man who challenged the rule of a "tsar, a khan, and an emperor" and fell tragically is a powerful story to share.

Btw: Are you able to answer some more questions regarding the shaping of the campaign or civ or is it just confidential behind the scenes stuff? I am really curious to see what the development process was like for it.

A playthrough of these new historical campaigns would actually benefit a lot from giving it some additional historical context. Especially when the newness of this game wears off. Nothing out of the ordinary is needed though, just some Wikipedia bits about the historical units and what happened IRL would make these playthroughs a lot more interesting for the average viewer, who doesn't have a clue about the history of Bulgary.
I'm wondering what you did differently. It mine it stays stuck on find and defend the village. Yellow never turns me to enemy. Neither does green. Makes the mission super easy.
Now I'm wondering what happens if you ally the Tsar. Will he turn on you once you killed the bolyars or/and Tatars, or will you get a different victory story at the end? This looks like this has more replay ability.
Plan is to go through all the old campaigns over time, so yes. Not unlikely that I play through the old campaigns on Stream and upload them to UA-cam afterwards.
This is why I don't play multiplayer - waaay too clicky. I like to take my time. I have huge respect for people who can play like this, but man it gives me a headache! :)

So I found a way to cheese this mission: by intentionally avoiding finding the town, but find the mill and the 2 vills first, I just boomed all around the map, strip mined everything, go imp, shank the tartars, and amass an army of trebs and cav archers to gank the tzar. Yes this is done on the hardest difficulty level.
I used to dislike the Forgotten Empires/HD Edition campaigns because their voice acting and cutscenes felt so indie-ish and typical of modders. Not as good as the original ones (even if that Wallace campaign voice acting was a bit atrocious) but the DE really seem to have fixed it up nicely.
Interesting why they choose tsar Ivailo from all of the huge Bulgarian history... Not saying that its bad but it would be so so better if they picked khan Asparuh etc. I am Bulgarian btw and i love that they put my country in the game thank you ♥️ also some of the things that the units say are strange 😁 it sounds a little bit Russian there is such thing as subiratsya there is sabiram but ok. You have shortened the mission. If you ally with Konstantin, you need to kill Tatars, then Bolyars and in the end, Konstantin betrays and you have to kill him too. But it's the more efficient way to complete it to just go for Konstantin.

Konnik is basicaly a unit you can make when enemy has pikemen and archers... since enough will survive to kill the archers, while the dismounted ones will kill the pikes.
There were some missions that started with a big battle, by aoe standards mind you.. These are some large battles that come to mind with a set number of troops vs set number of troops Joan of arc 5 El cid 4 Dracula 1(towards the end), 5 Prithviraj 4 Tariq ibn ziyad 1,2 Le loi 2 (siege) Le loi 6
My brother's name is Ivaylo and he is a big fan of this game. He is so lucky. He can play this game playing himself as the main character in the campaign.
@theViper I noticed in my DE, that the Ivaylo Campaign and the Kotyan Khan Campaign switched the dificulty , Ivaylo has only two swords. After seen this video I played the whole Ivaylo Campaign just for fun :D greetings from Germany
Aaaaaactually it's rather likely that Ivaylo was a nobleman, considering he married the queen afterwards. The descriptions of him being a farmer as well as the derogatory nicknames for him are, IIRC, sourced from Byzantine chronicles, and the Byzantines aren't to be trusted to describe anything related to their old nemesis fairly.
Will you redo all the previous campaigns now with DE? I have played the Joan Of Arc campaign on the beta and they have increased the difficulty a ton so it would be interesting if even you could get a real challenge.

That scenario looks magnificent. I love the dynamic that lack of farms provides. Makes food essentially a more valuable resource than gold
and you also have your economy scattered over the whole map which makes conquering the bolyar towns more relevant. I love the DE.

It hurts to admit, but I have grown to like the new graphics, and the new campaigns are solid. Quite like the new civilizations as well.

@theViper I noticed in my DE, that the Ivaylo Campaign and the Kotyan Khan Campaign switched the dificulty , Ivaylo has only two swords. After seen this video I played the whole Ivaylo Campaign just for fun :D greetings from Germany

Aaaaaactually it's rather likely that Ivaylo was a nobleman, considering he married the queen afterwards. The descriptions of him being a farmer as well as the derogatory nicknames for him are, IIRC, sourced from Byzantine chronicles, and the Byzantines aren't to be trusted to describe anything related to their old nemesis fairly.
No farm is not at all annoying if you use cav archers.

I have played the Joan Of Arc campaign on the beta and they have increased the difficulty a ton so it would be interesting if even you could get a real challenge.
