    I can't deny I'm fat. And I know why.
I eat, and drink too much, and spend far to much time in front of the PC, sitting still.
But I would never complain if someone said it to my face. It's my own fault, I can't start a 'movement' telling everybody I'm beautiful, even if I'm fat.

I feel ya. I'm a fat fuck and there's a couple reasons for that.
But i don't blame anyone else for it either, i'm the only one who can change it.
It doesn't really bother me when my doctor or family members tell me i'm big and should do
something about, i know that they're right. I genuinly enjoy fat jokes, if they are well written

Same here. The 'movement' who encourages staying at this weight is harmful for all of us. I'd rather people not insult me because of my appearance , but people can point out how unhealthy I am .

It is easily understood to to the smarter among us. We do get satire, irony, sarcasm, and (using the Oxford comma there) i personally enjoy dry humor, and humor that has little if any filter. Of the UK comedians you listed, Frankie Boyle is my favorite, and i like Jimmy Carr's piercing jabs. He has some jokes that are just evil funny. You're Bang-on with this one as i see it. i was hooked on Python, The Young Ones and Black Adder to name but a few from your rich comedic culture as far as sitcom-esque shows.
You know, i think we have chatted before on this or a Panel Show video, if you recall, let me know.

Don’t encourage someone’s obesity but don’t be cruel to them either. Being someone who has been fat for pretty much their entire life, I don’t like the idea of fat acceptance. You shouldn’t celebrate someone who is obese or morbidly obese. Their life choices are killing them and they’re impacting others around them as well. At the same time, you shouldn’t be evil to someone because they are fat. Don’t say things like, “eat a salad fatty” or “hey fatass” etc. Stuff like that is obviously not helpful and it will only drive them back to unhealthy food choices.

I always says this to people that says “you should accept your body”
No. I am proud that i am a foodie, i can make delicious dishes for that. I am NEVER going to be proud about being fat. I can not accept it. Food as much as anything out there can be a drug. Being fat isn’t healthy it is a sign of addiction to food.

Dude, I had McDonalds twice a day for four months and put on an enormous amount of fat. I switched over to a diet of 2000 calories per day consisting of boring bland chicken, brown/parboiled rice, and basic vegetables. It took literally no willpower to make the transition. I later found out that soy sauce, spices, and a lot of marinades don't contribute too much to calorie intake so now even the food is tasting good.

  • @MikeRees

I agree with you so much about fat acceptance. I am 22 stone, down from a peak of 24 but still... Hovering around 300lb. I've joined a lot of groups for fat people and so often they switch from weight loss as a focus to fat acceptance, and all that bullshit about it being healthy comes in because they're all in their 20s and their organs are young enough to just about cope. It fucks me off no end. On the flip side a "fat club" was set up at work a few months ago and it's strong on shaming each other and celebrating exercise, and you know what? Collectively we've lost 8 stone in 3 months, 2 of those being me. Forget about people's feelings, shame people (to an extent, don't go into abuse), because it might just end up with people having another 30 years of life to worry about those feelings that got hurt

One more thing: Men's Health said something one time that I totally disagree with: "Listen to your brain not your stomach." Couldn't be further from the truth. I'll keep eating even when I'm full. And at 16:50 the old saying is: "If the ingredients look like your Chemistry homework. Don't eat it."

That last point you made is a terrific one. Just get yourself up from your sofa, get ready and go outside - then decide what you want to do. You have moved, you are no longer chained to the TV and sofa, you may choose to go to the gym - you may feel like going to the park...but you are up and out and that is much more in line with what you should be doing. A little motivation is better than zero motivation.

The problem now is that being overweight is more and more common. So instead of addressing it and trying to get people to take responsibility for their weight it's now about acceptance and not body shaming. But the problem is pointing out someone is overweight from a medical point of view and a factual point of view is seen as body shaming when it's not. It's just fact. Take for example the cover of a recent cosmopolitan magazine, they had a very overweight model on the front in a bathing suit, as if to say it's normal and I get they were trying to show a positive image and if anything be against body shaming but to promote someone on the front of a magazine that's overweight and therefore unhealthy is slightly wrong. There is no such thing as being healthy and overweight.

I think what people are leaving out is that their are two sides to this story. First, are the people who are flat out gluttons. I can understand the reasons for people's reaction when they see an overweight person who's being a glutton (especially in public). However, that's not everybody's situation. Being overweight is sometimes genetic no matter what you eat. Case in point, I've met quite a few vegans who were actually overweight. I wouldn't call them super chubby, but they're overweight. The last important oversight is medications. There are many medications on the market where the side effects are weight gain. This is why you should never judge. And even if they are indeed a glutton, it's really none of your business. Speaking of medication, as more and more people are diagnosed with some form of depression, I suspect that even more people, Americans in particular, will have even more weight gain unfortunately.

As a fat bastard myself, in my case at least, every word of that was truth. I had to have a gastric sleeve section (about 80% of my stomach removed) or I was gonna die. I was 173 cm and 165kg (5'8" and about 365lb, I think). Over 2 years, I lost 60kg (130-odd pounds). 12 years on, I've started to put some back on, but nowhere near what it was.
It was ENTIRELY my own doing. I actively disliked and avoided healthy food, including the majority of vegetables.
Still do, in fact, but I'm trying...
And what you were saying about portion control was exactly right. The thing about ingredients you can't pronounce, though, not so much. A lot of ingredient lists use scientific names, even for natural substances, mainly because you wouldn't fucking touch it if you knew what they actually were. For example, Wiki these: cochineal (the colouring used in red M&Ms, at least, it used to be); castorum (basis for many vanilla flavours); gelatine, ambergris (used in both food and perfumes). All totally natural products, but would YOU buy it if it said instead "crushed beetles; secretions from a beaver's anal gland; rendered hooves and trotters; whale vomit"? Because that's what they are...

Devon, I spent my entire life being told, “You have such a pretty face; if you’d just lose some weight!” So crushing since Mom was the one feeding me! Even in my 50’s she’d say it! What is needed is new words, new strategies to talk to young, overweight people, especially with teens! “Are you going to eat that whole thing?” Myself being oppositional, my last response was, “yes, and since you’ve said that, I’m going to eat two!” Not a healthy response, but a learned one!
In recent years I’ve lost over 100 lbs due to health issues and I feel so much better!! But it sure wasn’t parental or societal influences that caused it. It was pain, depression and alcoholism that did it. And I sure wouldn’t recommend alcohol as a treatment for obesity!!
Love ya, Devon, and I appreciate your honest reactions!!

You go to a gym to get fit and healthy and they offer you fatty sugary calorie laden food... that's insane and completely defeats the purpose of going there in the first place. In the US they give sugary food for free in the hope they sign up again next year.

Man I used to be so obsessed with being fit and healthy, I ended up getting a job I grew to hate and it took up so much time I just ate convenience food. I had a pretty ignorant stand point of how it couldn't be that easy to fall into the trap of gaining a lot of weight and it ended up happening to me. But it's true you do know what you're doing, I knew I wasn't eating clean and at the start you do like to deny it but honestly it becomes a comfort thing.
I feel that it's a crutch to avoid feeling down or truly becoming depressed, I experienced depression through my teenage years right into my mid 20's. Now, when I don't feel myself the first thing I'll do is look for food and even knowing I don't want to keep doing it. It lifts my mood, I'm not morbidly obese but it is already affecting me in minor ways and it's something I'm keen to break the cycle of. Having been obsessed with the gym I know that really the hard part is getting into the cycle of going to the gym and once you it happens there's almost no better feeling. I miss leaving the gym feeling weak as hell then just getting the rush knowing you're doing something that helps you in the long run.

After my thyroid surgery I found myself joining a gym/spa that my older brother belonged to ,
they had a sauna and a hot tub, that I'd scheuale my workout routine to include enough time for at least a half hour to wind down in these areas. Also I found it helpful to have a routine that included bringing a protein drink and banana to replenish myself with. Besides I had the motivation of wanting to look good at the dance club that was looked forward to on Friday &
    Saturday nights.
And even though this provided a good -or as Ricky might say, a proper-cardio workout, the purpose was probably defeated bag the amount of alcohol consumed-
I too have trouble with confidence and the beer helps.
But it's funny I felt confident at the gym because to me it was all about aspect of physical fitness--except fir the part about wanting to look good at the club, but that was just a side goal, then when I got to the club I would bring my own shots of encouragement before going in,usually two 40ozs to get me started, plus this was cheaper than the clubs beer prices. 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸

i lost 100 lbs 10 yrs ago, modifying my diet, and never have i regained...the hard part became to stop losing weight and level off. i also have Hypothyroidism, which is the disorder that many claim as the reason they became obese. i was 260 lbs, but at 6'3" it wasn't really something that stood out. In addition to avoiding type II diabetes, i was able to drop my cpap device, heart medicine, and my knees certainly thank me.
i'd share my diet plan, but not being a dietician, i wouldn't want to give advice for anyone without a doctor reviewing it first, as i don't want to cause harm in the event this plan doesn't work for others. The biggest sucky thing about that much weight loss is all the extra skin that remains and it doesn't seem to have any plans of adjusting to my new weight. :D

Agreed Devon. Thank God things have changed. There are still countries that have the cast system where people with darker skin are considered lower than light skinned. Some go to extremes to lighten their skin. As far as weight goes, I got up to 16.5 stone (231pounds) a few years ago and my knees were screaming for mercy. I made a conscious decision to get back to my normal weight of 14 stone and the pain in my knees Miraculously disappeared. Times have changed & I'd like to think that we are a little wiser now.

I have to disagree with your point, about someone being derogatory to you can be "motivational" to do something. I think it's glossing over the fact that a lot of people with problems have low self esteem, and calling them "ugly" or whatever can be destructive too. It's possibly part of why we have more teen suicides, of people going down self destructive paths. There can be many reasons for folks problems, and some people don't have the tools around them to fix it. And you know, some people may be content with being fat, not exercising. I think it's presumptuous to think everyone would like exercising, or putting in that effort to be thinner. There were many fat people in the past, and it was never a problem, now people feel like its ok to abuse fat people, or "help them" to "change their behaviour" and "be healthier". Why? Why do you have to comment, if they haven't asked for help? How do you know they aren't happy where they are? Could it be they become unhappy, because others feel like its ok to comment about their weight or fitness level in a derogatory way?
Maybe we should stop judging others, and accept them however they are. Then maybe their self esteem would be better, and they wouldn't be as self destructive, or terrified of going into places like gyms.
We don't know other people's story, so who are we to judge?

    • @DevonDaVinci
      @DevonDaVinci  5 років тому +1

I will agree with you that not everyone can take critique and use it as motivation, I don't believe I was referring to everyone being able to do this. I haven't watched this video for a while so I don't know fully what I said, but if I did that it was a mistake on my part. And, I'm not saying that people should be able to just walk up to random people and just talk about their bodies, but for someone that is close to me or someone that asks for my opinion better not be shock that I don't support their choices about diet and exercise. Unhealthy is unhealthy, and being happy about it is irrelevant to that. People that do drugs may be happy as well as people that drink excessively, it still doesn't make me expressing concern for them wrong or bullying. Now if someone is using derogatory names then yes that is wrong, but by saying that it is unhealthy and a bad decision is not wrong no matter how they may feel about it.

the worse thing people do is starve themselves when trying to lose weight. the trick is to eat tiny portions more often. when you miss a meal and get hungry your body reacts by making fat cells to store calories in so as to keep you from entering that weakened state you get when you aren't eating balanced meals. then every time you get hungry your body reacts and you actually gain weight. if you snack on healthy foods all day, not to the point of stuffing yourself just to keep your body from storing fat for a rainy day. eventually your body will use those saved calories thereby getting rid of those fat cells and you actually start to slim down. healthy regular eating works better than starving yourself fat.

I'm not super crazy overweight, but I am indeed fat and working on losing weight.
I never ate any desserts because I don't like sweets, but I actually ate a lot of food that was super high in sodium. Like, I would have 300 to 400% of my daily sodium intake every day and it's a fucking miracle I never got any heart disease.
But now I walk 2 to 6 miles every day and I'm usually only eating one meal a day and maybe a light snack if I still feel hungry. The meal I eat is always super balanced and so far after about 6 months of doing this with a few cheat days I've lost about 20 lbs. I never went on a diet and changed what I ate, I just started eating less.

I was never really over weight, just chunky- as my mother would out it. This somehow developed into a dislike of the idea of being overweight, and tried to be health conscious about the food I ate, including salt intake, avoiding it like the plauge. But because this was the main source of,what I didn't know at the time was a critical nutrient, iodine, I developed a thyroid condition.
This probably should have caused me to gain weight, except for an avoidance of too many sweets and sodas. To be very honest I do tend to look down on obesity in others, but try to curb that responce whenever it rears its ugly head, except if that person has an annoying personality, then I criticisize their weight--in my head.

When I was growing up we use to have a regular babysitter,a sweet elderly neighbor from up the block,we would see her out in her back yard gardening or feeding some squirrels. There was thus one time where she couldn't make it to babysit so my parents got this other neighbor to fill in, I didn't like her because she cohesrt my other siblings to join in with her in tormenting me , threatening me with lewd comments to where I ran into the bathroom and locked the door, with the threats continuing.
She happened to be obese, and I couldn't help associating her irritating behavior with her unattractive weight appearance .
It took me awhile to disassociate obesity with unpleasantness .
Then I fell in love with the comedic talent of one Dom DeLuise in the movie "The End".
