      Winter Haydn lol that's my most difficult fact to reconcile. Why would black folks (or Hispanics in my case) believe in a source that guided persons to conquer us by force and "teach" us the words of god?

    • @Mr.BluePants
      @Mr.BluePants 6 років тому +24

      Tony Almonte Well Spain has always been a christian/catholic country/kingdom for centuries, since it existed pretty much.
      I don't know where you're from, but if you're Hispanic being christian could make some sense, being that from Spain or from a Spanish speaking South American country (conquered by Spain) or from the US or another country but with latin heritage, which has always been christian since the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Spain) reconquered their territory from the muslims (who had previously conquered those territories).
      Now black people being christian just makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, specially if they had slave ancestors in their family history. It's not like the Bible rejects slavery, if anything it embraced it, since at the time it was written slavery was a common and normal practice. Even Jesus was okay with it, telling the slaves to respect and serve the masters...
      As many religious people do, they obviously cherry pick the parts of the Bible that are okay and pretend the bad parts don't exist or interpret them in a way that doesn't sound as bad, but it's always a ridiculous stretch when they do that and you can easily deconstruct their wrong interpretation every single time. And there are also the 90% or more of the religious folks, notably black people for example (but others too), whose total knowledge from the Bible comes from church and never actually even read the Bible a single time. And some of the ones who did read it didn't understand most of it and just use their pastors, etc to help them interpret it and obviously because of that they fall prey to their biased interpretation of the biblical passages.

    As an American atheist, I support and defend everyone's right to believe in whatever they want, free from discrimination, as long as they are not physically or emotionally harming anyone. I also think religious freedom should be a two-way road: we should all be free to practice the religion of our choice, but we must also be free from having someone else's religion practiced on us.

      I agree, but in my opinion I like to add that religion should not interfere with science. That’s when I get angry. Teachers, like many I’ve had, have told students in biology or whatever that they don’t need to accept these scientific theories. They treat them as hypotheses instead, and America suffers as a result.

    • @shawnsimmons1308

      Evan Wolfla...Agreed!! Religion has no business being in a science classroom!! History have proven that the success of religion is directly proportionate to the failure of education. Personally, I think Robert Ingersoll put it best, "If people were a little more ignorant, astrology would flourish - if a little more enlightened, religions would perish."

    You ever hear about the Milk Jug Prayer test?
    A professor of sociology did this. They got a group of 300 college student volunteers. 100 of them were directed to pray to the god of their choice for assistance every time they needed to make a decision, or when there was a problem. 100 were instructed to pray to a jug of milk kept in a refrigerator in the professor's office. And the last 100 was the control group, they were directed to not pray at all. Each group was then told to record how often they got positive vs. negative results.
    When the experiment was over, they counted the positive results. Turns out, praying to the Milk Jug got the best results out of the three groups.

      Speaking as a Christian, I think you should explore your third statement and it's question (and of course I would recommend exploring it by reading the bible lol. A good start would be the story of Joseph and his brothers which is at the end of Genesis.) That's worth your time if you haven't made up your mind already. I think your other statements are perfectly logical.

    I'm a huge fan of George Carlin. I have watched a few "reactions" recently and stumbled on yours. Yours is the most thought out and concise I've seen. I've subscribed and will check out other videos you've produced. You are very well spoken and I agree with your opinions. Well done! My condolences for your losses too. I've lost a few family members from cancer as well and that along with other things brought me to really question religion. I watched George when these specials came out. I was in my teens and very impressionable at that age and really embodied his logic. Thanks! Liked and subscribed sir!

    Good reaction. He has a lot of good stuff and he said it at a time when it was more controversial than it is now. I'm suggesting Doug Stanhope on Nationalism again. Stanhope is a brilliant comedian, who is way to controversial to be mainstream.

      I became aware of Stanhope after he played a part on Louis CK's show where he was an old best friend of Louis' who was suicidal. He was amazing and then I started watching his standup. Louis CK needs to make a comeback soon. Just the brutally self-deprecating material he could do about his infamy for wacking off would be an epic set. At some point, when enough time has gone by, this will happen.

    Your comments on cancer and praying hit home for me. I started questioning a number of years ago. I finally decided a couple of years ago that there was no god (more than likely). I shared my decision with my sister (who seems to be falling into Catholicism more deeply of late) a year or so ago. A few months ago, she told me that she figured out that all of her health problems (I question her health issues, personally, and they're not life-threatening or anything remotely serious) started when I became an atheist. Needless to say, I'm a bit annoyed (or livid) as that makes it sound as if she's blaming me. Thank you for your thoughtful comments.

      I watched an in depth interview with Carlin about his writing. He said that as he continued writing, he stopped seeing himself as a comic who writes his own material, but as a writer who performed his own material. Which he said he felt like he was more holding lectures than performing bits. Which I think is when he really was at his best. Stuff like this (even though I love the hippy dippy weather man, his 7 words bit, his time bit even though that was prolific as well. Even his stuff bit). Stuff like this was definitely his brain on 100%. .

    you come across very centered, i like the fact that you base your believes on what makes sense logicly, but at the same time you seem very compassionate towards people of faith as well. On the contrary Ben shapiro who is purely driven by ego and a 'im right you're wrong' mentallity can be downright nasty. He can turn any simpel conversation into a fight over whose right, and he is so determined on being right that if anybody disagrees, they are to him just 'stupid' or 'ignorant' etc. Excactly what the problem with religion is, just two sides of the same issue. We need more people to see outside their own little bubble and not live through a set of belief systems, it kills the ability too see another human being for what they truly are and not just a label that the mind sticks to it.

He was more of a social commentator than a straight up comedian, especially towards the final act of his career. Carlin is not pandering to women, those are his true beliefs. He says things like that throughout his career. His views on this subject were outdated, for sure, but he was an old man. Now of course, most men know women and men are equally evil and selfish. Women are just more subtle most of the time.

    • @FallingGalaxy
      @FallingGalaxy 5 років тому

      Women can be more subtle about it due to social pressures for them to behave in certain ways, while men are taught to behave in other ways. So it's definitely socially created to be that way, rather than natural. My parents raised me, a female, to be blunt, truthful, etc and its only OTHER people who act offended when I speak up and say things that when a male says the same things I say in the same exact way, he's 'respected', while I've been told I'm being rude and tactless. So there's a problem. But yes, men and women can be equally cruel and 'evil'. They say psychopaths have far more males among them than females, but I argue that it's just the females have learned to hide it better because they've had to. A male psychopath who lacks empathy and displays brash behaviors is often encouraged and motivated as a 'leader' (Trump - he's a malignant narcissist, which means he's a psychopath, but his narcissism overrides his psychopathy, but many of his followers like his 'tell it like it is' attitude even though they seem to fail to note he only doesn't give any craps and that's why he's so 'bold' not 'brave'). While women/female children who show signs of lacking empathy, or bold, aggression are taught to squish that, to behave politely, to fake caring behaviors, etc. So I bet there are a lot more women without a conscience out there, probably matching men in numbers, than we know about.

    Devon, like your take on the late George Carlin’s “comedic genius” with using language as a component (parody) in his skits. His command and use of language was so spot on and hits varied topics of “social taboos”-clearly out of the park! For the most part, leaves many in his audience thinking and at the same time, laughing it away. Just a comment on the topic of “organized religion” or for that matter on deities-“agnosticism” should not be confused with being undecided or uncommitted to particular side of a debate or disagreement. According to Thomas Huxley an English biologist and a tenacious champion of Charles Darwin and skeptic-in the contexts say of knowledge, in general, use of agnosticism helps us differentiate between what we know and believe.Wondering if there exists some parallel when the “hanging Apple” (knowledge) was the temptation of the, “Adam and Eve garden story?” (Just saying.)

    I came from a background where religion existed at face value, but was never thrust upon me(like Catholicism. Get it?). I also tried believing in God, but I never really felt it like certain people did. I went on a Youth Group field trip and I volunteered to be saved with three other kids in tow. All of them cried at the same part of the prayer. I did not. I completely understood what I was saying at the time, but none of it made me have a reaction like a beautiful epiphany. I saw this special almost a year after that happened, and his wording and honest delivery of this material struck so true to me. Best of luck with the growth of your channel

    I'm an ex-Catholic(yes,I actually went to Catholic school as well,)and I absolutely love George's entire routine!When it comes to this particular religious sect,there is way too much judgement and shaming,and hardly ANY acceptance and forgiveness.When we started practicing our cursive writing,I was ambidextrous(you can write and draw with both hands equally well,)they FORCED me to only use my right hand so I would appear "different."That's just one tiny example of how they demand everyone to be the same,no individuality is tolerated.

    George Carlin never did "jokes". His gig was social commentary. Satire. He was probably the best their was. He made you think about things.

    Carlin was a master of Rants.
    A big thing that many people who are into stand up don't know, is that it doesn't just have to be one liners and set ups.
    It's about an experience with the crowd.
    You can have a crowd on their feet cheering without telling a single joke. This half of comedy died when he did.
    In the 90's, Carlin went dark as fuck. Even his biggest fans had to stand back and think about what was going on with him.

    What made Carlin so great is that he was talking about these things 40 years ago back when people didn't discuss this stuff in public.
    Being an atheist is controversial today but could you imagine doing this on television 40 years ago it just simply wasn't done! Carlin just like Richard Pryor they were both Trail Blazers.

    He was ranked as the 2nd greatest stand-up comic of all-time!! This was in the early 2000's after 9/11 but before people like Louis CK, Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, & Bill Burr became really big. Dane Cook was huge at the time. Pryor was ranked as #1.

    George Carlin is one of the most intelligent comedians of all time. I used to go see him practice his new comedy specials at the comedy club on Sunset. I was in my 20's then. 50 now. He'd come in have sheets and sheets of these new scripted comedy stories and he would say stuff like have you had your two fucking drinks minimum, maybe have another one or two because a lot of this material is new and you might want a few more drinks and then he'd go out and KILL IT, we'd be laughing so hard we'd be on the floor.
