They’re manufactured though, this is way more natural as it was just a podcast that was adapted for tv which is why it’s a cartoon, but idiot abroad and moaning of life were just too obviously scripted! This was when he wasn’t acting up for the camera and was just spit balling with his mates!
Yeah but an idiot abroad was brilliant. You can’t just say ‘oh it’s scripted it’s shiiiittt’ Karl isn’t really the type of character to act up in front of the camera. And we saw him in his most uncomfortable environment, genius.
Sermonia Games that’s exactly what I thought, right up until I tried to rewatch an episode! It was like Top Gear, might have at one point seemed off the cuff, but once you actually listen to what is happening, you notice that it’s not actually natural when you compare it to other stuff! I’ve re watched a lot of the stuff he had done in the early days, including the bonus feature Gervais did on his stand up DVD where he interviews Pilkington! I can say that it’s scripted and it’s shit, because it’s scripted and presented as if it’s natural and also, it’s fucking shit!
Green and White sorry mate but I’ve got to disagree, you won’t meet a bigger pilky fan than me, I literally fall asleep at night playing the xfm shows from back in the day. Karl is not the type of guy to act up in front of the cameras for fame, he doesn’t like fame.
19:01 - If you didn't get that, Karl actually thinks that Stephen is a freak, because he's 6'7". He thinks it's a disability and once even referred to him as an invalid, back in their radio days, which Stephen got really angry about.

I designed my own see-through toaster in school because of Karl's idea of it in this episode, and got an A. He's not as stupid as you might think.

Karl is from Manchester. This is why he's called a "Manc' (pronounced mang-ck)," as in "Karl is a bald headed Manc'." Karl is very fond of his former home Manchester, having moved to London to find work. Whereas Londoners at that time stereotyped Manchester and Northern Britain generally as backward, simple, and unclean. Think the American south stereotype.

@G-Funk 1 The animated HBO series uses audio from their podcast series, edited down to just what they considered the best stuff. Their XFM radio talk show went on for years before that.

As other people have pointed out, the XFM radio shows were the best, and are where it all started. You can find them on here but they're like 45 minutes + each. They also build quite slowly as Karl (who was only the producer on the show) becomes more comfortable with speaking live on air. They're just audio though so mightn't be suitable for a reaction.

I’ve watched all of these atleast 10 times as well as all of the XFM radio shows, monkey news and twaddle compilations. I found a new type of funny though watching you watch it 😂 love it!
There are a few British dudes you should check out that are not your typical British comedian. There's Paul Chowdry, Doc Brown (check out his "My Proper Tea" Rap), Romesh Ranganathan... I could continue. They bring in elements of other sides of British Culture, 2nd and 3rd generation "immigrants" and the reality of growing up in a "white" country. Gives a real flavour of real UK society, one with a chequered past but a beautiful woven tapestry of colour and culture which is generally becoming far more progressive, but there is still work to be done.

In US terms, think of Northern England as the Southern US. The West is kind of like the Midwest here. The South is a more metropolitan for the most part, Cornwall not withstanding. That’s an incredibly broad description so apologies for that. My husband is from Reading which is in Berkshire. It’s about an hour outside of London. They have the same preconceived notions as we do about various states.

The thing about Dyson actually makes sense, just not the way Karl tells it. There is an enormously well respected physicist/mathematician named Freeman Dyson, who was definitely 'up there with Einstein'. He's just not the same guy as James Dyson, who invented the Dyson vacuum cleaner.
