Here in Scotland, a good 80-90% of our humour is based on the idea that we hate all of humanity on principal, and ourselves most of all. It's why a lot of our comedy comes off as really harsh if you're not used to it
Frankie boyle is the top. Writes for everybody and nobody else comes near. Front row seats is a death sentance.
Frankie Boyle is pretty much the definition of "savage". He's actually mellowed out a lot lately, since he became a father, and his worldview is actually very empathetic and socialistic, he just cuts directly through the shit as a moralist, and takes no prisoners in his comedy. There's a long conversation between him and Russell Brand on Brand's channel, in case you're interested, although that would be far too long for a reaction, and nowhere near as funny (although they're both funny men, obviously).
I'm from Croydon in south London, since you asked. Croydon has, let's just say a "mixed" reputation.
He had a kid when he was on Mock the Week. It's fair to say he's just incorporated one of his comedy idols more into his material (Bill Hicks), and I guess it calls for it with this political climate.
I wouldn't say he's mellowed out at all, did you see the Michael Jackson's children's hospital bit which was one of his more recent jokes?

This is neither the time or place Patrick, but I knew Kennington along The London Road 55 years ago as a really safe place but it started to,er,change.It was no longer safe.Many residents I knew thus moved to Norbury,Thornton Heath ( in particular) and Streatham soon after and then in The Mid 1980's those areas began to, er, change so many moved onto Croydon fuirther along,as you know and now YOUR area has, er, changed ( 6 stabbings in 10 days recently ) and now I go for a Sussex walk and find....residents from Coulsdon and Croydon. As predicted more than 40 years ago Next stop THE SEA.....:)

Hackney is a London borough famous for gangs,shooting,stabbings it's like the Bronx in the early 90s. Belfast is famous for religious violence between Catholics and Protestant and was a literal war zone less than 20 years ago (literal holding the real meaning. The troubles in northern island were from the 70s to the 90s) the British army vs the IRA. Frankie jokes about that because Scotland has similar religious violence but to a much lesser extent.
Yea, there's even a Wikipedia article on the Glasgow Effect. Life expectancy for men in the city as a whole is almost 7 years lower than the Scottish average; look into the real shitholes like the Calton and you're almost better off in Iraq or the Gaza Strip.

I'm from a quiet town in Scotland called Largs, it's one of the more "posh" area's in Ayrshire... and there have still been 4 murders within a mile of the house I grew up in when I was there.
So that's one of the "nice area's" of Scotland in the 2000's, for context of how rough it was up here at the time he made those jokes lol.

Frankie was brought up in an area called Pollokshaws and it's right next to Pollok, both areas are known to be really tough with the levels of poverty that was and the poor quality of housing available, add the serious gang problems, alcohol, drugs and unemployment prevalent at the time, thankfully both areas as well as many places in Glasgow, money has been spent on improving the housing and creation of jobs, they still suffer the same social issues as anywhere else but not to the extent as before hence Frankie's utterly disbelief at the 4 well do guys from Pollok and wondering if he has entered an alternative universe.

It's his giggle that gets me, every time. :) Frankie Boyle is notoriously outspoken, edgy you might say. Not all our comedy is that insulting. It's his style and people love it, although it can sometimes hit a nerve. Glasgow is notoriously rough, though better than it used to be, and Edinburgh is the posh part of Scotland. Very different though not so far distant. Kevin Bridges is another famous comedian from Glasgow. Comedy thrives in places where life is hard.

I’m from a town called Greenock, which is about 30 mins from Glasgow. This town is known pretty well in central Scotland for being a shithole lol. Murder / stabbings are not “common” but not rare, drug addicts are everywhere and the town just looks a little bit unloved! We have an infamous celebrity called Catman (The Catman Of Greenock), who some people say never existed but there is footage of him here on UA-cam, if you look it up you’ll find it! He was a man who lived outside and allegedly only ate rats and mice, chose to not speak (rumour always said he lost his tongue) and didn’t / couldn’t walk. Basically lived like a stray cat. It’s weird as fuck - a warning if you choose to look it up lol but shows how weird this town is. Some people claim he’s still alive but he’s not been seen in like 10 years! He also had weird cat-like feline eyes you can see in the video, it’s crazy. So yeah Greenock is a crazy shithole 😂😂😂

I've been watching British comedy for a while. There are shows called panel shows, where they'll have two, or more, panels of comedians competing each other for points. Mock the Week is good, but there's "Would I lie to You", "8 out of 10 cats". And on a more intellectual level, there's "QI". Keep the vids coming. I enjoy them.

Greetings from the Gorbals in Glasgow/Scotland Devon, Frankie left the Gorbals as a wee boy and moved to Pollokshaws, the Gorbals at one point was one of the notorious schemes or projects in the UK, it was predominately Irish (Donegal) Catholic which is Frankie's heritage also from the Clearances starting in 1845 up to present day. one of the theatres you saw Frankie in there was the Citizens Theatre in the Gorbals...☘

I was born and raised just 3 miles from Brixton at The Elephant and Castle in South East London and had 28 fantastic years there until the area,sadly,started changing and I,reluctantly,moved to the very edge of South London and the surrounding suburban County of Kent in 1983 and I STILL miss the stimulation and vitality that living 3 miles, in the other direction, from The West End and Central London brought me. I only moved 10 miles away but this area is so safe that I STILL do not have a lock on my back door 35 years later....lol

I think you’ve misinterpreted what I meant. Of course Scotland is in Europe, I’m not debating that. I’m talking about the cultural references, colloquialisms and “patter” that Frankie uses is very much Scottish humour. You can’t simply state it’s ‘European comedy’ because Europe as a whole is culturally vastly different.

Totally love your reactions Devon. When i lived in the USA i would not dare show my American pals this. They would be so shocked i think they would gasp themselves to death.
I'm in Scotland, I'm mostly Scottish/Viking... I like saying Viking rather than Scandinavian because I have a ridiculous macho streak I admit! It's a tiny village called Wanlockhead (I know it sounds like something out of Star Wars!) It's the second highest village in the UK or something. There's a village just up the road called Leadhills -both are charming and lovely with a history of lead mining and some bicker about which is the highest hahaha, they're like two and half miles apart! There's also gold up in these here hills! So people go gold panning in the streams from far and wide... I don't! But people do.
I moved from a career in the music industry when the ass fell out of it due mainly to the big boys (EMI, Geffen etc) not preparing for digital stuff. Also had some addiction issues to work on and now a personal trainer amongst other things. So I moved to an isolated area to work things out. With a lot of books, box sets of DVD's, in a nice cottage to just pull myself together and start something new.
We don't tend to get offended by comedians giving us a hard time here (sometimes do, don't get me wrong because I've seen it go wrong!). But it's because we know who we're going to see, and know it's a risk in the front row with a Frankie type hahaha! But also we insult our friends.
I remember standing next to a friend who was on the phone arranging an *ahem* meeting between me and someone else. And he said something like, "Yeah, he's a big cunt, but not police. Losing his hair but doesn't seem to realise it. Resembles a balding terminator... or Jason Voorhees only to to be fair not quite as ugly!" I think it was more insulting and went on for longer, but I was rolling on the floor laughing! So I just said something like, "gimme the phone you stunted accident of nature, hobbit looking prick"! And we all had a laugh, the girl/dealer on the end was laughing, and so were we. Good friends too. Kept in touch online cos both managed to quit our poisonous lifestyles and became healthy and relatively successful.
