Jason Bateman leaving was detrimental to Silver Spoons, because from what I remember, Ricky’s friends were just a group of generic “‘80s kids”, and you didn’t really have a standout character like Derek for Ricky to interact with. But on the other hand, it let Bateman go on to “It’s Your Move”, which gave us that memorable “Dregs of Humanity” episode (which is really the only thing I remember about it, but that’s enough).
There’s another story that went around back in the day…. It was actually Ricky Schroder’s mother that got Bateman off the show. He had become competition for Schroder and it was Schroder’s show, he had first billing. So when Bateman was let go, producers told him they’d find something else for him. And even when that something else “It’s Your Move”, didn’t last, he went on to “Valerie/The Hogan Family.”
I'd buy that as this explanation here doesn't add up. Ratings is king no matter what character brings the eyeballs. Fonzy took over on Happy Days. Sheldon took over on Big Bang. All this time and I never knew Jason Bateman was on "Silver Spoons." 🤷🏻♂️ I watched the show occasionally and thought it was just okay. I had previously seen 9-year-old Ricky Schroeder in _The Champ_ with Jon Voight when I was 12.
I still remember an ep where they were going to do an Ice Cream shop. Derek proposed they combine their two names for the Shop’s name: “Der-Rick’s.” Rick was like, “It would still be named Derrick!!!” Watched the show all the time. All the guys at school started wearing the jelly bracelets when Rick did. 😂 I don’t blame them for wanting to give Erin Grey more airtime though. I agree. The writers could have kept Derek and just rotated Ricky's friends if they didn't want him taking over. It's always fun to have that real mischievous character in a show, especially when they're funny.

But unfortunately, it didn't last long. I don't think it caught on or something. But he's always been very talented, even as a kid!
Actually, from what I heard, the demise was the opposite of catching on. The fear was that Bateman's character was so popular on It's Your Move, especially with the Dregs of Humanity episodes, that kids would replicate the antics done on the show. Parents wrote letters to the network. The result was beginning with the 14th episode to the 18th and last episode produced, Bateman's character was caught by his mother and he wasn't allowed to scheme the way he did. The toned down version had the show cancelled. The team behind It's Your Move would launch Married With Children two years later - with David Garrison also appearing on that as Steve Rhoades.
He got his own show It’s Your Move. The characters were pretty much the same. They had great chemistry together as friends. I loved Silver Spoons. I had the biggest crush on Joel Higgins! 😂

After it was cancelled, he worked on the 1985 film "Can you Feel Me Dancing ?" starring his sister and produced by their father. During my time in the service in the late 80s, I missed a lot of tv so I never saw The Hogan Family, but I started to be a fan of Jason Bateman through his film career. He’s actually one of a large group of actors doing numerous movies together; Jennifer Aniston, Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader and JK Simmons have done numerous projects together interchangeably. And Arrested Development is on my list of top 3 sitcoms of all time.
Remember when Family Matters became the Urkle show? Seems as if that could have been avoided the show would have gone in an entirely different direction. This was supposed to be a show about the bond between a father and son.
yet both of those shows got bigger as a result, Happy Days went #1 in the ratings and Family Ties was #2 for two years, I think networks WANT a breakout star. Even more recently, Big Bang Theory exploded when they pushed Sheldon into the front when initially it was Johnny Galecki's vehicle as he was famous for Roseanne and other things.
“Being too popular “: Maybe they thought so, he certainly was an outstanding Actor, even then [ having done a season of “Little House “]. But it’s up to the Producers , and directors, writers, etc, to actually give direction to the overall show. Personally I would like to have seen Derek having some serious issues where we could have seen, perhaps some insecurities, and perhaps insight to why he was the way he seemed. But, both actors continued their careers quite well. [ both were good enough to be able to play off of eachother, making for excellent performances from them. But , that’s just my opinion. 📻🙂
Even though IT'S YOUR MOVE was gone after a single season, midway thru the next season, he got a great part in VALERIE/VALERIE'S FAMILY/THE HOGAN FAMILY then took off from there. I noticed on the later sitcom that he was a good straight man, doing a nice slow burn thru indignities, as I've also noticed from David Cassidy when he was on THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY.
A secondary character becoming too popular on a show!?! What about Fonzie on Happy Days? Or Latka on Taxi? Those characters helped the success of the show, not hurt it.
I'm not so sure why they fired him..i like Silver Spoons. They got rid of him. Just because He's too popular and too successful. Foolish reasons to get rid of someone. Shame on those directors and producers. They should've been investigated, sued, and fired. If they got cleared of any wrong doing there's no justice.
I think it's terrible they let him go. They could have shown another side of Derek...like if Ricky was feeling bad about something...Derek would have been the friend he can turn too. Was It's Your Move a spinoff of Silver Spoons? If they couldn't keep him on Silver Spoons, they should have spun his character off and put him in the time slot under Silver Spoons.
That’s such a lame excuse!! Too popular?! They really could have kept him. Dumb executives were not representing the primary demographic of this show - preteen/ teen girls!!
Would this be somewhat similar to firing Jaleel White from Family Matters because he became popular? So popular he became the star of the show. If I'm not mistaken, he was originally a throw away character for an episode or so. Boy, did those plans change.😂
I've never understood the concept of "People really like this (person/product/song) so we need to get rid of it." Seems to run counter to making money and isn't that what it's all about at the end of the day?
Contract and storyline direction....she actually did something similar during her Rhoda days, but the outcome was much different with Valerie. Oddly enough, that was in the summer of 1987 when the show was beginning its third season. Silver Spoons had just gone off the air that spring.
Jason on SS was unbelievably good actor…for his age…..sharp….funny…..charming af ..in fact Erin Gray would be charmed by him so much ……well, let’s just say she felt “confused”,that’s another completely different story in its self…
The train set was awesome and I was so jealous of it. I also like Batemans character, thought he was awesome in every scene and missed him when he left. After that, never heard from him again and must have drifted off into obscurity. 😂😂
I am almost 45 years old and I remember silver Spoons it was a great show and love it so much that I got all the years on dvd. And I think they should have kept Jason Bateman he was good in the show and 1 of my favorites and if the show was on now they would have kept him so I don't think that was right to just let him go. And I just subscribed.
The 80's was a time for diversity, and a ahow focused on the 2 rich, white, boys was falling out of favor. Including a lot more Alfonso Ribeiro made the show far more diverse. This made much more sense for the times.
They wanted to give him a spin off, but the creator had final say and blocked the show runners from doing it. They made "It's Your Move" in it's place. Which beyond David Garrison as the adult lead, felt like a precursor to Married with Children. As the Spoons and Move show runners later went on to create the only hit the young Fox Network had. I dunno, maybe Tracy Ullman counts
It’s Your Move was a great sitcom. Should they have fired him from Silver Spoons? As a compliment to Jason Bateman, yes, I think they had to. His magnetism would have made it the Jason Bateman show just as Urkle did to Family Matters 8 years later.

Remember when Family Matters became the Urkle show? Seems as if that could have been avoided the show would have gone in an entirely different direction. This was supposed to be a show about the bond between a father and son.
Bateman was good at comedy. Schroder was more of a dramatic actor. They were good together.
After Fonzie hijacked 'Happy Days' and Michael J Fox became the focus of 'Family Ties'; firing Jason was probably a preemptive move by the producers.
yet both of those shows got bigger as a result, Happy Days went #1 in the ratings and Family Ties was #2 for two years, I think networks WANT a breakout star. Even more recently, Big Bang Theory exploded when they pushed Sheldon into the front when initially it was Johnny Galecki's vehicle as he was famous for Roseanne and other things.
I used to watch "It's your move." I always remembered Steve Steve the pet peeve from Married with children.
Sounds like an inspirational story....The one who was let go is, as far as I know, is still an A-list actor forty years later.
Erin Grey was a bombshell. Especially on Buck Rogers on NBC.
Excelent video!
Thanks!
I loved Bateman both in Silverspoons and It’s your move.
Two really great sitcoms.
Another great video!
Thanks!
“Being too popular “:
Maybe they thought so, he certainly was an outstanding Actor, even then [ having done a season of “Little House “].
📻🙂
Its a good opinion
Even though IT'S YOUR MOVE was gone after a single season, midway thru the next season, he got a great part in VALERIE/VALERIE'S FAMILY/THE HOGAN FAMILY then took off from there. I noticed on the later sitcom that he was a good straight man, doing a nice slow burn thru indignities, as I've also noticed from David Cassidy when he was on THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY.
Soooo, they got rid of Bateman because he was too good?!? 🤯 Something doesn't make sense about that.
Agreed!
He looks like Hopson from Wonder Years because he sounds just like him.
Note that the ratings declined after Jason was fired.
Bad move for all involved.
After the show moved from Universal, it was on the same soundstage as Facts of Life.
A secondary character becoming too popular on a show!?! What about Fonzie on Happy Days? Or Latka on Taxi?
Those characters helped the success of the show, not hurt it.
Rickey and Jason made a cute couple.
oh no, that's gonna ruin his whole career
Well done! Great video!
Thanks. Hope to see you and Dave again in August sometime
I feel like his character was the most interesting aspect of Silver Spoons. I watched Silver Spoons reruns in the 90s (80s born Millennial).
Jason Bateman was fired because he was a better actor!
Spoons is our fav show. Always love it. I always wondered why Leonard was replaced by whats his name
I dont think it was a spin off. But I'm not sure
That’s such a lame excuse!! Too popular?! They really could have kept him. Dumb executives were not representing the primary demographic of this show - preteen/ teen girls!!
I think so too!
Would this be somewhat similar to firing Jaleel White from Family Matters because he became popular? So popular he became the star of the show. If I'm not mistaken, he was originally a throw away character for an episode or so. Boy, did those plans change.😂
But they didn't offer Jaleel White
his own starring sitcom apart from Family Matters. Regardless, he chose
to stay on board the original show.
LOL! Yes they did!
I've never understood the concept of "People really like this (person/product/song) so we need to get rid of it." Seems to run counter to making money and isn't that what it's all about at the end of the day?
Understandable my friend
They could have kept him, all they had to do is cut back on his screen time.
Valerie Harper got fired from Valerie aka The Hogan Family
Contract and storyline direction....she actually did something similar during her Rhoda days, but the outcome was much different with Valerie. Oddly enough, that was in the summer of 1987 when the show was beginning its third season. Silver Spoons had just gone off the air that spring.
From Derek Taylor to Marty Bryde
It sounds like something he'd put on his resume to explain a hole. "I was just too popular!"
lol!
Jason on SS was unbelievably good actor…for his age…..sharp….funny…..charming af ..in fact Erin Gray would be charmed by him so much ……well, let’s just say she felt “confused”,that’s another completely different story in its self…
If there was a Mt Rushmore of child actors who grew up to have very good adult careers then Bateman and Jodie Foster are definitely on it.
For sure!
I did watched silver spoon in the back in the 80s of course!!! I was teenager that time
*he got his own show after called Arrested Development* ⭐️
One of my absolute favs!!!!
Decades after 😂😂
The REAL reason!? Was there a fake one out there all this time?
I thought that was kind of a strange reason why they let him go
I heard that he was just dying to do the critically-acclaimed teen Wolf 2 movie. Shocking how that didn't win an academy award.
LOL!!!
Well done 🎉
Thanks!
The 80's was a time for diversity, and a ahow focused on the 2 rich, white, boys was falling out of favor. Including a lot more Alfonso Ribeiro made the show far more diverse. This made much more sense for the times.
Bateman: "...I don't know what I expected."
It's Your Move was a precursor to Married With Children. It was the same creative team. David Garrison was on both shows.
I was a HUGE fan of Silver Spoons growing up. It was the having a ridable train IN YOUR HOUSE, that won me over. I mean, what kid wouldn't want that!?
It’s Your Move was a great sitcom. Should they have fired him from Silver Spoons? As a compliment to Jason Bateman, yes, I think they had to. His magnetism would have made it the Jason Bateman show just as Urkle did to Family Matters 8 years later.
