- 1980s TV hit "Silver Spoons" was on the air for five seasons. Cast members Ricky Schroeder, Joel Higgins, Erin Gray, and Alfonso Ribeiro reunite to talk about starring in the iconic show.

@@ilovemusic7280 The 80s is the singularity of pop culture. There is something for everyone to appreciate and love, and no matter what comes in and out of fashion, the 80s will remain alive in spirit.
In fact, I have been thinking that once this whole Wuhan Flu biz is over and done with, I will have the most highly evolved immune system on the planet to the point where I can be deemed a higher life form. And as I higher life form, it will be my duty to rise up and reshape society to my own visions. It will have an eternal 80s motif (with some late 70s and early 90s tossed in). It will be like totally awesome, dudes.
Jason Bateman was on this show too, great Cast of actors and actresses..Don't forget how every episode had a lesson to be learned...

Hollywood is all about pushing poltics and hate now which has left me dumping it..
I don't even keep up with new shows anymore..
I may miss a good one but most just make me mad, .

What I liked about Rick in this show is that he played a child that was popular and had humility, while also being believable. He was a really good role model.

I think that train was available, or a similar one was. My mother lied to me and said my cousin in Virginia got it and "it was junk."
Show of hands. How many as kids and teens made up elaborate floor plans and property layouts back in the 80s for their future home, plans and layouts that included one or more of these trains?

I grew up in the 80s and was totally addicted to this show. It's terrific, and so many stars came out of it.
"Rick is a kid, but intrinsically a good actor" ... cannot agree more. His role in the movie "Champ" .. is the stuff of legends! Its the first time that I cried on the movie!
Walter Manfred I think he could make the hardest person cry watching that movie such a talented actor and it's awesome that he's working with the military like he is makes me a bigger fan of his and I was already a pretty big fan lol.
I bawled watching it and still remember it.
I saw the Champ when I was little and cried too. I live in Germany now and it's funny people don't know him from the Champ but from "Little Lord Fauntleroy" (from around the same time) which many people still watch every Christmas.
Did you ever see him in The Eartling movie? He was so good at such a young age. That movie made me cry.

I miss the Modesty of the 1980's It was the last Era of Helpful neighbors and genuine people.
Joel Higgins was a great TV dad back then. I miss this time period so much.

I was such a huge fan of this show. So cool to see the cast reunite. Awesome!
'Ricky' Schroeder - as he was then known - was my very first crush thanks to Silver Spoons. So cool to see how down to earth they all seem, in some ways true to the characters they played. And THIRTY years later they've all aged so well! Dye Joel's hair brown and he could almost step straight back in the role! And I've loved Erin Grey since Buck Rogers. Alfonso's never left the public eye and enjoyed such deserved success. All good people!

I used my crush on Ricky and later Alfonso as motivation to do my homework. My 7yo self was like, “I’m doing this for Ricky.” Lol

@@1158supersiri I couldnt stand jason Bateman on SS. His character was arrogant, condescending and sarcastic. Always trying to "1 up" Rick.
@@dinamule1119 That was his character. It wouldn't make sense to have both having the same personality. I heard one of the main reasons Jason was taken off of SS was because his character was overpowering Rickys and you can't have two stars on the show especially when the side kick was becoming the more popular one.
@@1158supersiri Nooooo, Ricky & Freddy were better. BTW when I was a child & adolescent, I crushed on Corky Pigeon. He was cute, & I've identified with "nerds" all my life. (I liked Ricky but not in a crushing-on way, because he's not a nerd, & Jason Bateman's character was much too mean & tart-tongued. Ugh! Erk! Gah!)
As an adult (since 1986-87), the TV nerd I have crushed on is Skippy from Family Ties.

I was hooked on this show. Silver Spoons was a great show. Last night they were airing reruns on TV and I just had to watch. Brings back really good memories as a kid.

And, here we are 10 years later. I watched Silver Spoons right from the beginning. Many famous actors appeared on the show when a child. I absolutely love Alphonso Ribeiro. He's smart, kind, humble, a good person and actor. I don't recall if this show is where I first saw him, however, I grew up watching him.

JL yes she had, tragic.. things didn't work out the way she wanted it.. she fell into drugs and dropped her career by the mid 90s.. her life went downhill from then on...

4 and 5 are my favorites seasons because Billy Jayne (Brad) was my favorite. He was really funny. He was great on Parker Lewis too and that guest appearance he had on Golden Girls as Blanche's grandson which he won an award for his performance. I never bothered to watch the first two seasons because I liked Rick and Jason Bateman older. Hogan Family and the rest of Silver Spoons needs to be put on DVD.

just don't make them like they used to. I was young (born 1981) when this was on; channel didn't always come in; remember Alfonso and loved how they opened the door!
No they sure don't make them like this anymore. Back then it seemed the TV shows, even the comedy shows, were more earnest. They weren't afraid to take themselves a little seriously. They weren't interested in being self-referential, or smart-alecky and non-committal among other things. By today's standards it's old fashioned, even quaint, but it also seems pretty nice.
satyricon451 It was a way different time back when these shows were made, I think the simplicity of the show is what makes it so unique and special. Today's shows are all in your face comedy nothing subtle about it. Just don't make em like this anymore and it's sad.

TRIVIA: The actress that played Ricky's Mom (Christine Belford) lived in the actual "Amityville Horror" House in the 60's before the kid killed his family. She also played Steve's Mom on "Beverly Hills, 90210".

I used to watch this show as a kid and remember crying on the episode where Ricky reluctantly shot the deer when he went hunting lol...anybody remember that? Ah man, I miss my innocence as a kid..I'm going to find that episode now and re-watch lol

He played a recurring character though.
He was essentially fired from the show.
Supposedly Rick's mom felt Jason was upstaging Rick. Rick's mom got Jason indirectly fired.

That usually happens on shows like this. The co-star always upstages the main star. Jason Bateman (Derrick) was funny as hell. A lot of times he was funnier than Ricky.
I love Jason Bateman than and now.
Bateman was basically the live action Bart Simpson, then it was Brice Beckham as Wesley T. Owens who became that kind of character on Mr Belvedere. Then along came Bart. Bateman was such a breakout star they gave him his own show, called It's Your Move.
I miss seeing Joel Higgins on the screen - I watched him in Silver Spoons and my all time favorite movie and later TV series Salvage1 - One word to describe him = Charismatic! Thank You Joel!

I remember when Nick at Nite did an 80s sitcom marathon backing in the early '00s it took me like 5 episodes before I realized that Alphonso was Carlton. I was born after this show aired so I didn't know.
