- Young Guns was one of the best westerns of the 1980's, featuring a perfect performance from Emilio Estevez as Billy The Kid alongside his fellow Regulators, all born from an idea from screenwriter John Fusco, who was inspired to bring a historically accurate, action-packed slice of the wild west to the big screen.
So this documentary will break down twenty things you probably never knew about Young Guns (1988), covering all the most interesting easter eggs, references and behind the scenes stories from the making of this nostalgic western, including what was really in the Peyote, the Tom Cruise cameo that you never noticed and what Emilio Estevez really thought of Young Guns being a lifelong fan of Sergio Leone.

No one could have played that part better than Estevez.
That's one of my favorite movies . I've seen it countless times . In fact I'm watching it after this video .
With the span of 34 years between the last movie released in this one what is it going to ride a wheelchair
Emilio Estevez apparently lobbied pretty hard to get the role. I guess originally they wanted Kiefer Sutherland to play Billy and Emilio to play Doc. I'm glad Emilio got the role of Billy though, such a natural for that part!
You 100 percent right
I've never met the kid but he is indeed perfect for that role.. He will always be Billy the kid for me. In movies
Young Guns And Tombstone are some of the best westerns I've ever seen.
And "The Unforgiven" with Clint Eastwood.
So you're saying you've never seen the first 20 minutes of Once Upon A Time In The West? Lol
@@jjburkk Never seen it.
@@jjburkk nope.
And Emilio Estevez in Dollar for the Dead or Paul Newman in Hombre and Sam Raimi’s Quick and the Dead
The best scene from Young Guns is when Billy calls down to the sheriff.
Billy: "Hey Peppin!"
Peppin: "I'm hearin ya Bonney."
Billy: "I see ya got Charlie Crawford down there with ya."
Peppin: "Yeah, we got a whole bunch...." A shot to the head takes out the man standing next to Peppin.
Billy: "Hey Peppin, Charlie Crawford ain't with ya anymore." Billy's maniacal laugh gets me every time. lol
It would have been funny if Billy named another guy near the sheriff and that guy gets scared and runs away.
@JoeR,. Great idea. That would have been great.
You are correct. Best scene in the film. 🤣🤣🤣
A dang good scene. My favorite scene in Young Guns 2..."White Oaks, you can kiss my a$$"
😆🤣😂🫡👍YES-BEST PART FOR SURE !
And charlie Crawford was Charlie Sheen's name in two n a half men tv show
I freaking loved Young Guns and Young Guns 2. They are classics and fn rock even now.❤
Saw Young Guns in the theatre as a kid and it blew my mind. One of my faves to this day because it marked a moment in cinema at an impressionable age
same. i was 8 when this came out.
'88 was the year my dad and i started hitting the theaters regularly in what would become our routine well through the 90s.
I was 16, and saw it on a date at a drive-in! I remember the scene where they took peyote and dude puked just standing there really left an impression upon me, and I never did peyote, lol.
I would love to see this in a cinema....was too young but I've watched this movie every year for decades
When I was in 7th grade my gf was begging me to take her to a specific movie I had zero interest in seeing on opening night. But I wanted to make her happy so I went.
It ended up being a great movie called, The Princess Bride!
Hell yes!!
I dont care what anyone says, young guns is a cult classic for all of us 80’s babies that grew up watching movies like the lost boys, la bamba and 3 o’clock high. I LOVED young guns when it came out in made my dad take me to see it twice in the theater lol.
McClary's legacy of loyalty, still stands in Western Mythology.
Great titles!
Young Guns and YG2 are among my top westerns. I would watch them anytime I was home from school sick growing up. I still watch them often.
👍
Same here I enjoyed both those movies and it was actually young guns that got me into hockey ironically. I always liked the classics of the 80's and 90's movies instead of all the new stuff they were putting out for children my age, watched YGs because I had a crush on Emilio at the time so I started trying to find other movies of his which is harder than you think back before the internet and found Mighty Ducks with him as coach. Next thing you know I'm a big hockey fan, side note my teams in the playoffs lets hope they will this time
They're both not very good
@@docsavage8640 Seriously?
@@docsavage8640 To each their own. Good entertainment in my opinion.
Both of the young guns movies were a big part of my youth. Even today if I find myself channel surfing, when I come across either of those movies I can't seem to click it anymore.
Estevez is one of the most underrated actors and underachieving actors of all time. He should have been an even bigger star than he was for less than a decade.
the part with billy on his horse backwards "hey did you know we're in the spirit world". The whole peyote sequence was epic and hilarious!!!
Young Guns II is one of my all time favorite movies. One I can watch over and over and never get tired of.
I’ve seen Young Guns more times than every other western combined. I still watch it every time I see it flipping through channels.
Did you guys see the size of that chicken! 😮😂
"Why ain't they killing us"
" They can't see us, we're in the fucking spirit world "
Big reptilian chicken!
We're in here.. and he's out there... doin it with his HORSE
I always pictured that chicken Steve saw was prolly at least 5-6 off the ground. If not 10
Dirty Steve, best character.
Absolute Classic Film...Part 2 is even Better!
I love the line from part 2 when Pat.Garrett said even their horses are crazy LO.L
😅🤣😂 not good movies
Great movies!!!!!!!!
I think I've ever made it through Young Guns 2, if I even bothered to.
I liked part 1 better, part 2 was kinda the downward fall of Billy which was kinda hard to watch.
It was a glorious time to grow up in the 80’s. Many great movies including this one right here, Young Guns! I must’ve seen this move 100 times. It never gets old. The John Kinney chase was pure 🔥 🔥🔥
John Kinney must've been a dang good shot and steady and collected in a fight. Cause the man just made a huge target.
Emilio Estevez should have won an Oscar for this role !!!!
I love this movie so much. It never get old. I love part 2 as well. 2 fantastic movies and I’ve been waiting for decades for a part 3.
@Jayhawk9,. That is an absolutely great idea! With sequels all over the place, I believe it definitely would be a hit. It would have to be done very carefully, like Billy the kid lives and as many characters as possible from the other movies that didn't get killed. The lawyers wife, who actually did become a cattle baroness.
I love it too. And it's an intrinsic part of my younger years. I have to admit though, I get what Emilio is talking about. I love Young Guns for what it is...but it doesn't have that classic western feel to it. It just doesn't. And as much as I love the original, and really like the sequel, I think the 3rd one is a horrible idea
Seeing this as a thirteen year old was incredible. It was the first western I though of as being made for me rather than for my dad, and I thought Silverado was kind of a crossover movie for both of us. Saw Young Guns multiple times in the theatre that summer and convinced several friends to watch it with me instead of them seeing Die Hard. When I was in high school I could recite almost the entire script word for word. It cemented a lifelong love of westerns and the old west lore
Really interesting, thanks for sharing
I’ve seen this movie many times but the end scene always gets my blood pumping
I saw this movie in the theater as a kid. When Chavez Chavez showed up with the horses after they broke out of the house at the end...I completely lost it
I loved this movie so much as a kid. Saw it when I was 10 or 11. That's why I loved it so much because it didnt feel like one of those old time westerns. It did feel like a brat pack kind of movie. I couldn't believe they were making a sequel and begged my mom to take me to the theater for it. Loved it too, but hated to see Doc and Chavez die. I cried!
Young guns 2: specifically the scene with Doc's last stand: "Billy!.... let's finish the game."
What a powerful scene that was!
Fun fact...That used the Doc character for that scene, but that scene is actually the real life death of Charlie Bowdre.
Young guns is still my favorite Western. By far
One of the best movies ever made
The worst movies of the eighties are better than anything made today
Same with everything else.
Agreed
One of my all time favorites
The best two gunslinger films ever..
Both young Guns 1 and 2 were born to be classics. It should be left at two.
I've seen this fantastic movie dozens of times. Now I have I learned so much about it that I never knew. What a brilliant video.
For my senior year on spring break, we went to Lincoln County! It was freaking awesome!
This is one of my favorite westerns. Just behind Tombstone.
I liked both movies but I think the second one is better. It visually has more of that western feel and also portrays Billy as a charismatic figure who is starting to believe his own legend with tragic results for those that followed him.
Well said
Young Guns 2 is one of if not my favorite movie of all time!
❤❤❤❤ Hello friends JUST WESTERNS. We are a team of Sports writers and Togheter with or Edtitors and Directores from our National Agency Brazil, with great honor, we are interacting with you, to congratulate you on the YOUNG GUNS Film article.... All the actors who are part of it, they are extraordinary, but the biggest higlight for us Brazilians is, without a doubt our Icon LOU DIAMOND PHILLIPS. We have already wact watched several films woth him. We thank the film LA BAMBA witch made him an actor and filmmaker who revolutionized the entire generation of international cinema. Congratulations Lou Diamond Phillips! Congratulations to you too. Hugs. Marisa Pereira de Arruda Editor-in-chief of Sports Brazil ❤❤❤❤
Hello Marisa! You are right. Lou Diamond Phillips is a wonderful and talented actor who continues to do amazing work on screen. His speech in 'Young Guns' is very powerful and would have been too difficult for many actors to do convincingly but he did it perfectly and you believe every word he says in that speech.
My wife and I loved watching him play our favourite character in the recent TV series called 'Longmire'.
I hope I get to see him in many more roles.
Now you guys have Poatan, Alex Pereira!! 🗿🗿🗿CHAMA!!
Gets all the recognition from me... top shelf 👌
One of my all time favorites! Great movie, a story line that keeps even the most ADHD person engaged, and characters that most people can relate to.
Fantastic movie, even still today!!
Love young guns! Great movie and nobody could have done better than Emilio
What great memories of both YG I & II. Me and 2 other friends of mine were reenactment actors from the New Mexico Gunfighters got hired to do some stunts for the movies. Got a picture with the autographs of crew that played the parts of the regulators.
The fun times on the movie set and the adventures we had will not be forgotten.
Young guns was a great part of my childhood seen both movies dozens of times. Maybe more. Loved them.
I remember riding my bike to the movie rentals to watch this over and over! Loved it! The 2nd one as well!
Thank you for this awesome content i love young guns it is my favorite western and one of my favorite movies of all time.
Nice work, bro! 🤘
Thanks man
I was 10 when young guns was in theaters. I liked how this movie turned out. I remember going to the theater to see this one and young guns 2.
BEST WESTERN EVER FOR ME
The “Heavy Metal of westerns”. I like that.
Young Guns and Young Guns 2 are amazing!!! Loved all the actors!!! Bon Jovi had a part in the second movie too! He was the long hair guy in The Pit. I have watched these movies several different times through the years and my kids, well they are in their mid 20's now, love both movies also!! ❤
What a great movie. One of my favs.
This movie got lots of recognition at the time! You act as if it was not a big film! It was huge at the time!
thank you, you did this movie justice.
I initially liked the film but found it a little too "hip" for its own good. Years later, I think it's excellent! Gritty, dusty, and awesome!
Great film, great cast. great sound track.
I grew up on old cowboy movies because of my mom and grandma. I didn't like any of them. This was the first western that I enjoyed. Both the original and the sequel are still my favorite westerns and I'll watch them anytime that I see them on TV. Also, I'm not even a Bon Jovi fan, but Blaze of Glory is an amazing song. The lyrics fit the movie so perfectly. It's one of the greatest movie soundtrack songs ever written.
That was informative and easy to watch
I recently had the opportunity to view this film and found it to be an exceptional cinematic experience.
Don't know wich one i like more, haven't watched them in over 25 years...
Great video, thanks for all the information
Never understood why this film never gets any recognition myself ... must've conservatively watched the film 100 times back in the 80s/90s ... Great casting, the chest scene ... wow, just wow ..
Great movie(s) man, excellent video you made
I liked it ! Still 1 of my favorites! And the cast spectacular !!
It’s hard to believe but seeing the gatlin gun scene at the end in theaters was one of my earliest memories at about 2 1/2 yo. I remember standing in the back of the theater watching this and thinking how awesome it was. Probably wasn’t there for the whole movie just there waiting with my family to pick up the older kids (as us Mexicans always roll with a relatives entourage, lol). Our movie must have ended sooner, probably Roger Rabbit or something since I kind of have memories of seeing that in a theater too and it was released at about the same time. As an adult those two are some of my favorite films. Moral of the story I guess is you never know when you’re making a memory for a kid.
🤣🤣🤣
Awesome movie ❤
superb video
Young Guns III? Mannnnnnn!!!!!! I can't wait!!!!! I saw the first two in the theater, and I own them both, today. Just so everyone understands, back in the 80's We didn't really respect movie reviewers. Back then everyone knew that they were just shills.
If anyone reading this loves the Young Guns movies, you have to see Old Henry. It's epic!
one of our favourite westerns its a classic
This and Repo Man are Emilio's greatest roles.
No. "Wisdom" is his best work. "That Was Then This is Now" and "The Breakfast Club" are right behind.
Great movie! Gotta give some love too though to Casey Siemaszko for Three O’Clock High.
Agreed.
When a movie takes me back in time to wonder what might have happened it draws me to research the known history to where I keep an amazed attitude about these outlaws and their life of desperation and fear to avoid everyone they knew.
Great movie, each character was excellent Emilio was awesome.
Luv 1 but 2 is another level and maybe my fave western soooooo underrated in photography, scope and well everything! "I'll make you famous"
My Uncle Bill loved westerns, the Young Guns movie made me understand why.
Watched it over n over
Regulaaaatoooorrs (slow motion) that peyote scene is awesome.
Did you see the size of that chicken 😂
one of my favorite movies.
All my friends and I loved Young Guns. My dad took us the first day it came to our theater, but we ended up sneaking into it at least another 3 times.
Jon Bon Jovi’s entire Young Guns album was my fave at that time. I esp loved Santa Fe and Miracle!!
Remember 1988, this movie was great 👍 one of my favorite Westerns still remember as a kid pretending to get tossed out 2nd story in a chest and jumping out shooting!
I love young guns. Seen it i dunno how many times. Have 2 copies on dvd and 1 on blu ray. Perfect cast.
Both were great. The second one is arguably the best of the 2. It didn't disappoint
Estevez absolutely nailed it as Billy the Kid. I hope they get him back for the third one. I also loved his older alias in the 2nd one.
For those who like westerns, watch Tim Blake Nelson in ' Old Henry '.😅
My fav movies of all time is Young Guns and Young Guns II! I wish they would make a 3rd one!
I loved both movies would love to see the third!
I was taken to see this on a date when I was 15 and discovered I like westerns!
I love them both equally. I'm a huge fan of Billy the kid and of most of the characters in this movie no matter who is playing the character of Billy the kid, but I have to admit that Emilio's version of Billy the kid is amazing and he brought an awesome character to life very well. I can't wait to see the 3rd part whenever it comes out.
Young Guns was a Classic the day it was made. A Great Modern Western!!!
I still like the first one best.
I was old enough to see it in a theater but didn't. I caught it on cable and fell in love with it. I was like 12 and it made a huge impression on me. I didn't hate the second film, but it just felt different.
Always watch both...couldn't pick a favourite
Best Billy the Kid movie ever, this movie changed westerns. So awesome. Correction on 4:26: Don't forget Casey Siemaszko's earlier (1987) role in "3 O'clock High"!
A friend who guided them and helped them with horsemanship RIP. Enjoyed the young actors he was a great Cowboy and friend.
Got young guns 1 and 2 , great movies to watch over n over , great movie about billy the kid
Young Guns is an example to show no genre is actually "dead", a film of any genre at any time as long as it has a connection to the generation at time of release. The reason the likes of Heavens Gate or Silverado were not successful was that they followed the template of long, slow burn contemplative westerns of the 70s. Young Guns fits perfectly well alongside the faster, high concept, more thrilling movies that made up the biggest hits of the mid to late 80s
Emelio's laugh MADE the movie!!
One of the best movies ever 🤗
Love this movie
I liked it. The peyote seen was really good. You never see that much detail in movies, slowing down the voice and all. Fear and loathing in Las Vegas was similar when he started fighting the bats and seeing weird things in the club. 😅
Can't wait for Young Guns 3 to come out
Fantastic movie!
I love the “Pals” epitaph and the entire theme of loyalty among men.
Also, Terence Stamp is what I like to call “NNG,” or “Never Not Good.” He could be in a Doritos commercial and I’d watch it.
Who else got goosebumps and shouted regulators when Chavez rode back to the burning house to save them shouting "regulators"?
In ‘88 I was 19, and my friends and I would quote this movie constantly. YG2, as well.
I love this movie!! It was so great!!
Did you guys see the size of that chicken
Hey dog, you see the size of that chicken?? 😅
