    1998 Corvette C5 has a compression ratio of 10.3 to 1. all of my other vehicles have a compression ratio 10.5 and higher they all take premium unleaded fuel only. 91 or higher. I use Sunoco 93 and 94 when it was available only. Anything less would lead the Corvette to pinging and pulling timing on acceleration during the summer. I also splash some 100 octane once in a while and the Corvette loves it. Never pulls timing when it's 98 degrees outside.

      @@motorgearhead, Believable. In 2009 when on vacation, we had a rental Prius. That car was so slow, that I drove it very hard. Full throttle with the gas engine working hard was a common thing. It did not get anywhere remotely near the 45 mpg that Toyota claimed. Was wondering why it was so bad, and saw that it weighed almost 3000 lbs according to Toyota, (not much less than my C5 Z06 and C6 Z06) and we had 4 adults in it. ( probably around 3650-3700 total weight) That trip pretty much convinced me that I will never own a Prius. We do have a 2500 lb 2015 Honda Fit 6 speed manual as a daily run around town car, and it is a much more powerful car than that 2009 Prius, and gets 39-40 mph on long round trips. Steady speeds--not having to stop or briskly accelerate makes a huge difference in cars you wouldn't expect. V8 Raptor sees an average of about 12, but I've been able to get 19 mpg when I am able to do a steady 50 in a 45 limit on my way out to a friend. In a 3.4 Cayman S with the direct injection I can see over 32mpg doing a prolonged but steady 70 on the interstate. But I think I was most impressed when drove from Chicago through the mountains to Deal's Gap (TN) with it and got 23.5 mpg...towing a trailer with a motorcycle!

    I had a 2003 6spd C5 (+5hp/15lb.ft tq from factory) with slight intake/exhaust mod for more power/possible mpg. Driven NOT the way it was meant to be driven @ 55-60mph, I easily broke 40mpg! 6th gear is extremely tall, making low cruising RPMs for ridiculous mpg, but closer ratio lower gears make for much more aggressive launches- best of both worlds! My Automatic C5 (same engine, slightly better mods) could only get 34mpg under same driving conditions, and wasn't nearly as quick. 6 spd manual forevermore!

      Nice! My old c5 auto(had the 3.15) would do 47-50 (UK mpg) at 50-55mph. You only had to breath on the throttle, almost on off at times but it was ridiculous how good it could be.
      My c7 z51 cannot get close to this in v8 mode! Around 37 mpg at 50 mph.
      I’ve checked both figures on the dash to actual mpg(by filling tank) and was impressed they were within 1%.
      I always wanted the 6 speed c5 but they’re so rare over here!!! :)

      @jeladsnikpoh1289 Рік тому +1

      @@GazRsExtremeBrickMachines Yeah, the 6spds are difficult to find and cost more on this side of the pond too. Definitely worth it! My auto was also the 3.15 ratio. To compare, the 6spd is a 3.42 ratio with lower gears at bottom for acceleration, closer ratio with 6 instead of 4 gears (for less 'lag' after shifts), and taller final gear for low RPM mileage. The later 6spd cars (2002/+ I believe) had that extra 15lb/ft torque at lower RPM than auto's because GM knew the 6spd could handle more oomph without stressing the transmission. I love alot of things about the C7, (style, interior, power, sound), but all that 'mpg improving' technology they added like direct injection, cylinder deactivation is junk ('rubbish', for real English speakers). Heavier car, but should get better mpg than C5 and C6s, but doesn't. Major engine issues because of all that, too. If it were more reliable, and repairable by a normal person like myself, I would absolutely buy the awesome C7 with 7spd manual!

      @@jeladsnikpoh1289 nice cheers! Yeah that’s what baffles me with all the new tech but it’s worse off!
      Being the 7 speed manual I never use eco mode other than the first week as I have read about the issues! Most of the time the transition felt seamless when cruising but when you pressed the throttle a bit harder and it goes from v4 to v8 it wasn’t a good feeling to me so I never used it again.
      The car far exceeded my expectations though, really well put together and drives great. The thing I find weird is there’s quite a lot of c7’s in the UK and as far as most are aware there’s not been any of the issues with either the torque tube or engine. I know we don’t have the extreme temperature rangers as you do in the states which could help. Also they’re most likely weekend toys for many here and really taken easy.

      @jeladsnikpoh1289 Рік тому

      @@GazRsExtremeBrickMachines I'm glad you're not having issues and hope that continues for a long time! One thing I should share is about that direct-injection, while being great fuel-atomizing improvement, it has the 1 major flaw. It doesn't spray fuel over the valves to clean them, so valves get so junked-up with diamond-hard carbon, it hurts power, mpg, eventually leading to burned or bent valves, compression issues, engine knocking, etc. I'd recommend installing a quality 'oil catch can' to minimize oil going back into the valve area, turning into carbon. Also highly recommend a water/methanol injection system, which sprays a fine mist over valves, super cleaning them better than fuel additives (fuel additives don't clean valves on D.I. engines, because fuel doesn't spray over them). Other great benefits of water/meth kits are slight increase of power and MPG because of added 'compression' in cylinders, and much cooler engine. By cooling the engine, and also drastically reducing the risk of engine 'knock' you have potential for a much greater amount of horsepower with less wear on engine, or a much cleaner, longer lasting engine in stock form. There's no risk of hydro-locking or rust, and is very common to due on extreme horsepower turbo'ed corvettes, souped-up extreme diesels, etc. Only way to clean the valves on your direct injected vehicle, and has all these other benefits!

      87 octane burn faster and more complete than higher octane gas. High octane is less detonation susceptible because it burns slower. Legit Street Cars tuned his manual C5 to get 400 crank HP and 40 mpg. He tuned it to run 17:1 afr a load load cruise. My '97 T/A manual got 27 mpg with 3.73's on the highway and it made 400 whp. My '08 Mustang GT got 32 mpg with a manual and 3.31's. Why? the massive low end torque and numerically low gearing in overdrive (the T/A had a double overdrive) allow the car to cruise along at 1700mpg. They're also aerodynamic and lightweight, compared to modern vehicles. Compare this to my 200 HP Mini Cooper S. I get about 27 mpg on the highway. Even in 6th, I'm running 3k rpm on the highway. That burns a lot of fuel.

    The C5 gets great fuel economy unless you're in hooligan mode. I have one, so I speak from experience. In comparison to the 350 in my older 1980 vette that had less HP, the fuel economy is night & day better in the c5. But I'm not a fan of not running 91 octane in it. From what I read, it only detunes for 87 octane if it hears pinging. It only hears pinging if it's already happened. If it's already happened, it's already done some slight damage. I can't say how much, but if it's an engine you want to perform and last a long time, you don't let it get damaged by low octane fuel.
    In a pinch, if it's all you can get, sure, go for it. But don't run 87 on a regular basis unless you have a way to manually tune it for 87 ahead of time. And you will lose some performance. When I bought my c5, I didn't realize it called for premium, as my old '80 didn't and I was used to that. I filled it with enough gas to cruise home (a couple of hours) and drove so mildly that I don't think it was ever a factor, likely still ran on the 91 map. The next day, in the daylight, I noticed the sticker and it's had 91 ever since. Never so much as a hiccup either time, and great fuel economy.

    The Corvette is great on gas. It may have a huge engine, but it's a very understressed engine pushing around about as much weight as today's subcompact CUVs. The gearing keeps the engine revs very low cruising on the highway because of the gobs of torque, and it sits super low to the ground with an aerodynamic body.
