I always love watching these two guys. As classic as Red Dwarf is, these guys are in a league of there own. Like how Rik spells his name with a silent P (The Young Ones Reference)
I saw this stage show too. The ad libs were scripted because the same thing happened when I saw them, but it didn't make it any less wonderful. They were genius because they were so in tune with their audience. Rik was something special and I miss him so much.
Rik Mayall (Richie) also appeared in the Blackadder insults video as Captain Flashheart. He unfortunately died of a heart attack after jogging in 2014.
Honestly the plays were better than the show at times, they always let the audience know when they screwed up, because they'd spend minutes ripping into eachother over each blunder.
"That was the best Reg Varney I've ever seen" refering to Rik saying "ooooo Miss Jones". Reg Varney was the main character in the 60's/70's sitcom called 'On The Buses' The "Miss Jones" line was used by Leonard Rossiter who played a landlord called Rigsby from the 70's sitcom 'Rising Damp'. Getting the shows and actors mixed up was the joke.
@@michaelthompson6885 Yes, Rising Damp. It's set in a bedsit. FYI in the UK a bedsit is one room in a townhouse that's been converted into individual living areas with shared bath and kitchen. Rigsby (Leonard Rossiter) is the landlord.
Have you seen the Japanese Bunker scene from Bottom? It's the absolute most hysterical scene! Actually all the Bottom stuff is golden. Oh, and Adrian Edmondson's wife is Jennifer Saunders, who was 1/2 of French and Saunders comedy team. She created Absolutely Fabulous another great British comedy!
If you like Rik Mayall's comedy, try watching an episode of 'The New Statesman'. He plays the character of Alan Bastard (U.K. politician). It is quality.
They did 5 tour shows, Bottom Live, The Big Number Two Tour, Hooligan's Island, An Arse Oddity and Weapons Grade Y-Fronts Tour. The first in 1993 and the last in 2003.
@@stevemcmosh4271 Hooligans was the first one I discovered. It was the off script bit with the bunker that is probably still my favourite moment in Bottom.
Never really found bottom that funny, but appreciate it’s comedy for others. The young ones however, brilliant! University Challenge is one of my favourite episodes 😂
Another tid bit of information is that the name of the main theatre in Southampton is called the mayflower. Which takes its name from the ship called the mayflower which took the pilgrim fathers to America which started its voyage from Southampton.
I love the live stage shows more than the actual tv series. So funny, 4th wall breaking with hilarious (but reportedly scripted) bloopers that elevates the whole thing. Pure genius.
Confirm these are scripted, this is the Southampton show, I saw them live in Torquay with the same 'breaks in character'. It doesn't bother me though, it was amazing to watch live and at the time it made the show even better.
@@martynclarke5167 To be honest, knowing the breaks are scripted is even more impressive than if they were real. It shows how great they were at writing and acting they were to make it so convincing.
Yes, one of several live tours they did, a different story each time. I went to see all of them (and this one twice!). It was a great experience. RIP Rik.
Check out The Last Hurrah.....it's more an audio book that Rik did and of anyone is a fan of Rik then this definitely needs to be heard. He was given complete and full rein to be as crazy, filthy, insane and genius as he wanted to be...the result is a work that is as close to how insanely genius Rik was in real life
for my 15th birthday my mum got me tickets to bottom live, Holligans Island! to see them right there in front of me was incredible! after so many hours watching the VHS boxsets, I'm now 36 and love Bottom as much as ever!
I miss Rick mayall, he was a massive part of my life growing up from Young ones, bottom, drop dead Fred, Guest House Paradiso and the live bottom series, an absolute legend of British comedy and didn't get the recognition he deserved really. R.I.P Rick Mayall. A stalwart of British comedy.

They did 3 tours of their live show, Rik always used to get the giggles in every tour, the best one for me is from their third tour (hooligans island) with the door to the bunker fail. Rip Rik, one of my fav comedy heroes.
I knew you were in for a treat with this clip- the chemistry between Ade and Rick was amazing and the friendly competition when they go off script is side splittingly funny. Oh to have been in the audience that night!
In case you didn't realise, Rik Mayall (Richie) also played the Flashheart character in Blackadder that you watched a few days ago. He was a true genius
If you like Bottom, they have an earlier series available on dvd called Filthy Rich and Catflap, and an episode on 'the comic strip presents' series called Mr Jolly lives next door which is hilarious.
Man that was great. I saw them live in Nottingham about 20yrs ago at the Royal Concert Hall and it was one of the funniest shows I've ever seen in my life .Their improv abilities when deviating from the script are epic .

Bottom Livewas filmed in 1993 at The Mayflower Theatre in Southampton as part of the Bottom Live Tour. The tour was so successful that Rik and Ade wrote and recorded a third series of Bottom for the BBC in 1995, before continuing their characters' exploits in further live shows.
i will just say the method most people used to record shows back then, they would record them in a studio with a small studio audience then do the same shows in a theatre and record the laugh track, its the same way we have recorded live shows in the past because they usually have a show on 2 of nights but have access to set up and rehearse in the theatre for longer, you record during rehearsals to get the shots and angles that you want without distracting an audience, then record the audience and any improvised parts on the 2 live nights then mix it all together
The clip is from the live show that toured the UK. Ade and Rik were brilliant together!
