He’s an oxford graduate, super smart historian, he just puts on a working class Londoner accent for his stage show.
I wish more people sae his as a character and not as a person. It wouldn't be funny if he was really like that.
massive history buff. his history documentaries are a really good watch. it is a shame that some people take his character at face value and identify with it when his true intention was to mock those very people. one of the reasons he has essentially retired the character now.
the guy is fantasic im scottish and every time he gives us it im in stiches laughing
He's also from a fairly aristocratic background.
@@davidevans2653 Yes it would. Snob.
I worked with Al at a local theatre once, do NOT try to heckle him, he will rip you apart and make you feel so small. but his full act is really funny and off stage he is a lovely guy. He is so interesting to talk with and his knowlage of the war is unbelievable. I could have chatted for hours with him
You can't be a great comedian without being able to take a heckle, and dish it back out 10x the strength!
“Daniel and Spencer…..beautiful British names” 🤣🤣🤣
Our British humour is 2nd to none 👍good reaction lads 🇬🇧🇺🇲🇬🇧
Al Murray 'name a country we have defeated them' and 'countries of the world' are both great.
Oh that's an amazing one
It's not only hilariously funny, it's a jaw dropping demonstration of his incredible encyclopedic knowledge of history.
I've watched it several times over and I holler with laughter every time.
That’s an awesome bit of comedy with a history lesson thrown in

yup. spot on!
One of the most Academic and intelligent comedians out there - absolutely perfect parody of an East End Landlord (pub owner): he's absolutely nothing like this in real life. Astonishing memory for facts

2) His grandfather was a spy.
Who said Americans have no sense of humour. Well done lads for seeing the humor.😊😊😊
"humour" ;)
as a Brit i like these guys - they as you say have a sense of humoUr. Some of the vids with americans reactiing to british humoUr are genuinely painful to watch. These guys seem to be intelligent and fun. My experience sofar, and this is probably unfair, are that this combination of attributes is somewhat thin on the ground in the good old US
Duh you think so?

@@sophisticat7673 they looked a bit lost that’s all I meant. I’m British. And I do understand that it can be difficult to understand the the “joke “ no sarcasm intended.
I like that you as Americans can laugh at jokes made about America. I think many Americans get WAY to wrapped up in patriotism and fail to laugh at themselves. Not that it’s only Americans who do this.
Al Murray the Pub Landlord is one of the best comedic parodies around. He's as much taking the piss out of certain British people as he is anyone else. Well done for seeing the humour and not being offended, haha. You got a new subscriber for that!
GUYS You HAVE TO SEE HIS - **AL MURRAY - NAME A COUNTRY WE'VE DEFEATED THEM* So funny and you'll see where his history becomes comedy, not easy to do but SUPER FUNNY
We take the piss out of everything in this country, glad u guys take it in good humour 🤝🤣
Including ourselves.
Guys don't take it to heart, he takes piss out of french, germans etc. But he is one of our best comedians along with Peter Kay.
It's great to see two dudes having a laugh and not taking things too seriously. It is a comedy show after all. Al Murray's persona, being The Pub Landord, is obviously smug and proud but as you clearly recognise, it's just to make the audience (and you) laugh.
As well as “Name a country, we have defeated them” and “Countries of the world”, also have a look at “Undefeated World War Champions” (or something like that)
Worth mentioning that Al Murray has a degree in modern history among other things so he has a good idea generally of what he is talking about when it comes to historical events.
The Pub Landlord is a character played by Al Murray, and the ;accent is Cockney from East London.
As an Englishman who hates no-one i can honestly say I've never taken the piss out of someone I didnt like
I recommend you look up his series on the end of WW2 where he drove an American jeep across Germany, following the route of the allies, ending up in Berlin. It isn't comedy, but it is eye opening, moving and educational.
GREAT REACTION, TRY AL MURRAY,
" NAME A COUNTRY, WE HAVE DEFEATED THEM " HIS HISTORY IS SPOT ON. HE HAS AN OXFORD MASTERS DEGREE.
British guy here, who subscribed just now after watching another reaction video about al murray... not a fan of reaction videos usually, but you guys are great, light hearted and understand the humor without being offended. You guys would be very popular in england, you understand our humor! love to you both!
Great Vid guys. You take Als humour exactly as its intended. He never tries to offend, he just tries to make people laugh. A comedian of the purest....the guy doesn't even tell a single joke!
They say Americans don't get British humour. But these 2 prove everyone wrong. Keep up the good work fellas
These two are laughing at his accent.
Not his jokes
I really am impressed with the way a lot of you Yanks can take a 'roasting (this is an American term and in the UK we would say 'being taken the piss out of'). I think this demonstrates a great deal of maturity.
Yes I agree, because we're used to it in the UK!
We use the expression 'roasting' in exactly the same way in the UK too. Do you live under a rock?
Oh guys, you have found a gem in Al Murray, you should look at his other stuff. The full 2019 show is on youtube. You should look at snippets as well such as , "Name a country we have defeated them", "Al Murray on Nations of the World" and also "All parents must watch this". He created this stage persona of an old fashioned, rather bigoted, jingoistic misogynistic pub landlord, the reason for the bar on stage is your supposed to a customer in his pub when you watch him. He did several tv series with this character in a show named Time Gentlemen Please. That's also on youtube. In reality he is very well educated, having a History Degree from Oxford and has been given both an honorary MA and honoraty PHD. His entry on Wikipedia is worth reading. Once your familiar with him there is even an upload of him performing in a small bar in of all place France, entitled Al murray "here to help" in paris april 2013.
It is always worth listening to what Al is actually saying! It isn't just comedy! The guy is way more intelligent than this character would have you believe!!
I'm a Brit, I've been to the USA a few times and, I think that, Americans are lovely people. They are VERY welcoming and friendly. It was a joy to visit America, mostly because of the lovely people there. 🥰
You guys are lovely Americans. You are such good sports, with Al Murray taking the piss about America. Us Brits do love Americans, though. That is genuine. 🥰
I second that
I can't agree. I haven't met them. I only love people I know and have deep feelings for. Love is such an overused word. :)
All Brits love all Americans? That seems very undiscerning.
Are you wanting to apply for citizenship?
@@dinerouk No. I'm just describing my experience when I've visited the USA and when I've worked with American people as well. 🥰
You've hit a gold mine in Al Murray!
This Al Murray’s stage persona . He calls himself “The Pub Landlord”
Yup. He portrays the typical old style pub landlord who is patriotic and has something to say about everything.
haha HELL YEAH! He's the type of publican that would listen to all your stories while takin your money, polish the glasses while givin you lie advice, and pick you up and carry you out when you'd had too much. Perfecto!
Time Gentlemen Please.
He's satirising the small minded little Englander mentality. Some people didn't get this at the time. "Go on Al! Tell it like it is!" He's mocking people like you ya muppet. He's actually an intelligent cookie.
@@mikmook4781 Not really Mik. I think you are sort of missing his point. He isn't 'mocking' anyone. He is a comedian playing a character 'the pub landlord'. He could equally be 'the London cabbie'. Many English/British people are very patriotic but equally can take a joke and laugh both at themselves and the Landlords logic as to why Britain is Great.
Al Murray is very intelligent and can speak fluent German, he has loads of videos to watch, he has a history degree from Oxford University, you’ll love more of his act
He did actually say "From which vanquished nation do you hail?", but those subtitles were misleading for a lot of the time otherwise!
Yes if you look up Al Murray and countries, he describes all the countries GB has beaten in wars. Very funny.
A very intelligent funny comedian he really knows his history. Top Standup from Al you beautiful people Murray.
Al Murray is a oxford graduate with degrees in history, this character is clever it is a caricature of a certain type of working class white male, its done so convincingly that for a while people didn't realise he wasn't like that. He had a TV series called time gentleman please and is hands down one of the fu niest and smartest comedians o
On the circuit today.
His character is "The Pub Landlord" that's why there is a bar. I'm from Liverpool, England and i struggle with his accent sometimes
If you can laugh at a joke about yourself, you're a true man of humor! Nice one guys!

Al Murray is hilarious. “ Scots scousers and geordies” is a good one. I saw him live a few years ago and laughed so hard my throat swelled up the whole next day.
Being British i just hope the American people take this all in fun as it was meant to show. I would love to be there sometimes with our allies in Great America.
I remember a time when people didn't feel a need to hope others weren't offended.. Being offended is a choice.. Its a comedy show, Al Murray is a comedian, he i supposed to tell jokes, i'm pretty sure people know why they are there & who it was they paid money for tickets to see.. Why would people be offended geez.. He didn't even say anything offensive & you are still worried people may have been offended.. This is the problem with the world today, the world has gone mad..

It's called comedy.
The pub landlord is a brilliant character, but its more like "the London Cab Driver" There are far more Cabbies like this than Landlords.
Al Murray is actually a drummer and is director of a Drum Manufacturer called British Drum Company.
It's very clever humour. Al Murray is a drummer and an amateur historian. He graduated from St Edmund's, Oxford, and the mouthy pub landlord is just a front.
He's hardly an 'amateur' when he has a history degree. From Oxford no less.
@@relfyem I've got a LlB from London. Doesn't make me a lawyer.
Amazing response to an amazing, much loved British comedian!!! The character he plays here, and it is a character, has a bar on stage because he's playing a pub landlord (so you are right before correcting yourself - it's a bar that you'd find in a pub). Whilst he is taking the piss out of Americans he is also making fun of us British as well. It is brilliantly constructed though!!!
The clever thing is,if the audience guy had been from a different country the whole of that skit would have been different
Good job fellas, good to see you get the humour and can laugh along with us. Everything in our country is about taking the piss out of each other for a laugh. It doesn't matter whether it's your family, friends, work colleagues or pet dog, it's all the same to us and meant in a friendly way. Thats how you can tell we like you! haha!
Hey guys not sure if anyone else has mentioned this , when he says the British invented gravity he was referring to sir Isaac Newton who in the late 1660s discovered the theory of universal gravity . So obviously him being British the brits invented gravity lol . Great reaction to a very funny and clever man
It's Einstein's theory of relativity.
@@jrobs1133 yep was away with the fairies when i text that but i think you get what i meant
His act is a parody of a pub landlord from the recent past. Strong East London accent, dodgy views, macho persona.
He roasts all countries he talks about including the UK. He was insulting our past history of colonialism in this video with his references to the moon.
Congrats, you got the joke! :)
Glad you like him.. there's always affection and respect behind this type of humour, so never take anything Brits say seriously...except the fact the British invented gravity!🤣
Yeah us Brits demonstrate that we like someone by taking the piss. The time to get offended is when we get VERY POLITE with you haha
Pretty sure it was an apple that invented gravity, an Englishman just noticed it. Of course just noticing things and then taking credit for creating it is extremely British. I mean you lot think you invented India.
@@bf5175 Don't forget it was a Royal Navy officer Francis Beaufort, who discovered wind.
@@bf5175 ..nothing 'invented' gravity sweetie.. the comedian was joking. After all, this claim fitted in rather well with the rest of the theme. I jokingly repeated it, in case the reactionist missed the joke. Better steer away from comedy, especially clever comedy, if you don't 'get it'.
@@pipbaxter5286 LOL. Whoosh. This is the most hilarious comment ever.
Let me explain, sweetheart. You see the British comedian joked that a British person, Sir Isaac Newton in case you don't know, invented gravity. The apocryphal story being that an apple fell on his head and gave him the idea. So my joke was that it was the apple that actually invented gravity and that all good ole Isaac did was observe it and take the credit for it.
Here's some advice for you, don't try to insult people that are smarter and better educated than you are. All you've done here is prove that you didn't get the original joke and therefore didn't get my joke either.
Or as Abraham Lincoln put it:
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt."
Have a look at Al Murray, name a country and we have defeated them and Al Murray on Nations. They’re probably his best 2 sketches.
Al Murray is playing his comedy character "The Pub Landlord" here. It allows him to take the p*ss out of sexists and racists without them realising it. He's an extremely intelligent guy, and very very funny.
Al Murray is the pub landlord met plenty like him over the past 20 years
"He has a bar, uh, no, a pub, sorry." Uh, nope, you were right the first time. It's a bar.
He's playing a charactor and a feckin good one at that 👍
I really like you guys. Not many Americans seem to appreciate British humour, and it makes me happy to see you get it and laugh and not get all bent out of shape at a gentle ribbing.
Al Murray's 'Name a country we have defeated them' is the best one after this to react to.
By the way, you were correct the first time - Al has a working bar on the stage, not a pub. In the UK 'pub' is short for 'public house', which is the building with the bar inside of it. The bar is the counter with the beer taps. :)
Al Murray is playing a character called The Pub Landlord, which is why he always has a bar and a beer on stage.
The character is a kind of send-up of those bartenders who stand behind their bars serving the locals and talking about how their village / town / country is the best place in the world and imparting 'wisdom' and definitive opinions on everything. But it's also poking gentle fun at our own enjoyment of considering ourselves so great, as well as daring other people to get offended and thus prove that they also wish to believe themselves superior... and in so doing, showing we are all exactly the same.
He's a very, very clever man, as you will see if you watch 'Name a country...' He's actually an Oxford educated historian among other things.
Hi guys! Great that you can laugh at yourselves. Personally I think its a sign of maturity. Cheers.
Another video thrown up by the algorithm. Watched it in full, these two guys look like proper genuinely likeable blokes. But as with all these American react to British comedy videos. 99% of the humour goes over their heads. Regardless, would love to have a beer with them.
There is a lot that goes over our heads but we try our hardest to understand it all. Much love and thanks for the compliment.
Can I have two words to describe Great Britain? Fackin Beu'iful
Ah give it a rest mate they got most of it.
99% went over their heads?! I know that's just hamfisted bantz (a sure sign you shouldn't go down the pub with them) but it's wild, like you're imagining there's hours of research needed to understand anything he says, when really it's just a thick unfamiliar accent
I was thinking the same thing. Was just about to put this exact comment on but you beat me to it
Al Murray is brilliant. This is his 'Pub Landlord' persona - based on a particular kind of landlord, which most British people will have encountered at some point in their life.
Great to see two Americans with a sense of British humour, not getting offended or defensive . Al is a much loved British legend! 👍🇺🇸🇬🇧
he's really talented.
i love how he works the crowd.
he's so fast.
he usually goes through the entire front row and roasts them all.
One thing that a lot of people miss due to watching isolated clips is that part of the pub landlord act is that his wife has left him. Hence the line: "It doesn't matter who comes first when you're on your own" and the follow-up: "It's been a year!" He would often use the latter when sex was mentioned.
I got to meet him after one of his smaller warm up gigs and he is a true gent. The most impressive thing about his show to me is his ability to remember everybody he talks to, their name, their job and then bring them back into a joke when it fits. Very intelligent comedy hidden behind a very convincing landlord character. Definitely check out more of his stuff, he does a good bit about naming a country great Britain hasn't conquered.
Edit - just saw you did that, keep up the good work.
I have been to a few of his shows - bloody brilliant - the way he remembers people names & jobs is amazing & then takes the mick out of them .... very funny!
I know lots of americans and i tell them the same thing, our humour is attacking ourselves. American comedy doesnt do that very much. When i was dating an american girl she didnt get my humour because i would make jokes at my expense yet she thought i was being mean to myself. Once they know the rules, americans love english humour....like you guys did. Oh, this was first video of yours i saw. Am subing.
Al Murray character is the Pub Landlord! LOL
Al Murray stand up is actually very educational. I recommend looking up the part in his stand up show where he asks the crowd to shout out countries that the English never conquered… 👍🏻
Nice one guys, need to let you know (if you don't already) that he is playing an out-of-date character of an in DENIAL old ENGLISH BARMAN (that still believe the Empire still exists adnwe run the world still!). Yes it's hilarious and he was Oxfrod educated and is one of the finest historians in the UK, but this was his break playing this guy. He just goes off on a mad rant like every drunk British bar owner from the last generation does FACT!
"goes off on a mad rant like every drunk British bar owner from the last generation does FACT" I've no doubt there are one or two of this sort of character in existence somewhere (let's face it, there's one or two of anything you can imagine if you look hard enough). But I've never come across it myself, so it certainly isn't a 'FACT' that 'every drunk British bar owner from the last generation goes off on rants'.
Love the way some celebrate the fact they can say... The empire is gone... Isn't the world a lesser place for it...?

Check out Al Murrays Road to Berlin, a series about the allied invasion all the way through to the war in Europe's conclusion.
Another great comedian now sadly passed on is Dave Allen, his humour of yesteryear is still relevant today, without doubt one of the all time greats, there is a lot of his work on youtube, one I love especially is about him teaching his kid to tell the time, although I have seen it over and over it still has me in fits of laughter.

Great reaction to great humour, guys - it's entertaining in itself watching you two crease up at funny stuff! He's the pub landlord that's his routine ❤️😂
Just saw this pop up because of the message about hiring 500k views and the subtitles that show up while it autoplays before I click on the video came up saying "Hey guys, we're embracing sex 21" 😆😆😆 your accents aren't that difficult to understand, not sure how the subtitle bot picked up "Embrace The Suck" as Embracing Sex" but I'm sat here laughing so much at that, totally brightened up my morning 😁😁😁
Anyway guys, keep up the great work with these videos and thank you for keeping us entertained through these difficult times 👍😁
Al Murray, and especially his pub landlord character as you saw here, is fecking brilliant.
ANY of his stuff is worthy of a watch.
His sketch on how global finance works is brilliant, I've laughed as hard as I did for that, for a LONG time. It was one of those "oh god, I gotts stop laughing because I can't breathe!" Moments.
Glad you enjoyed this! If you haven't seen Lee Evans yet, you might want to check him out. Often regarded as one of the greatest stand up comedians in Britain.
Glad you enjoyed him as I love his humour. As others have said he’s a super bright guy who is mocking the Brits every bit as much as the countries he’s supposedly mocking in his stereotypes and general piss taking. As for the accents, we have some doozies here so I shouldn’t worry about not understanding everything he said. A full Glaswegian, Belfatian, cockney, Yorkshireman, Geordie or person from the Valleys, speaking in dialect can be totally incomprehensible to most. Most brits probably have more American English input via tv and films than they do accents and dialect outside of their own than anything else now that Neighbours isn’t as popular as it was and Paul Hogan isn’t on the adverts etc anymore.
Al Murray, The Pub Landlord, brilliant.
Al is on tour in 2022, it is called the "Gigg for Victory" tour.
His depiction of Hell seen through the eyes of different nations is tear-inducingly hilarious
