It was really clever how each series dropped him in class but increased his intelligence. One of the best comedies ever and ended with one of the most emotional endings in comedy history.
Never thought of it that way. Great observation 👍 I always see him as being of upper class but disadvantaged in some way. Like in the first he is royal but unimportant as a spare and unwanted and as a Captain in go forth as of decent stock and cleverer than George but without his advantages which doesn’t seem fair
Oh I never thought of that! 🙌
Most definitely. Blackadder all time top 5. A shame in a way that the genius mind of Rowan Atkinson spent so much time on the awful Mr Bean.
Definitely the best ending in TV history. And it only came about because they couldnt figure out how to end it without offending veterans who were still alive.... so they filmed the final scene IN ONE TAKE and played it in super slow motion.
I think I teared up at the end of Blackadder Goes Fourth, and I was only like 8 or 9 when I watched it for the first time.

It was George who asked that question.
That would be 200 feet into the air
It should also be "if we should happen to tread on a mine" and "scatter yourself over a wide area".

The ending broke Britain's heart..
Yes the end of the episode "Goodbyeee" that gets me tearing up no matter how many times I see it. However it does have one of the best lines. Not mine, it didn't. It's only a TV show.
@@Trev359 It is only a TV show but the final episode was far more than that.
What was so great about that was until that point Blackadder was the least emotional comedy going. The fact they included that was both unexpected and beautiful
@@Trev359 Oh congratulations give yourself a pat on the back for missing the point, it may have been a TV show but what it depicts actually happened and was experienced by millions who lost their lives for no particularly good reason, as remarked by Black Adder before he resigns himself to going over the top "Whatever it was, I'm sure it was better than my plan to get out of this by pretending to be mad. I mean, who would have noticed another madman round here." If you had any sense of empathy then that you would have been able to grasp the enormity of it.

Some info regarding the Lady Godiva reference (14:00)
The legend of Lady Godiva is that her husband, Lord of the area around Coventry, taxed the people very harshly. She constantly complained to him saying he was being unfair, and eventually he said he would lower the taxes the day she rode around the town on a horse while naked. So she told everyone to stay indoors and shut their windows, so that she wouldn't be seen, and proceeded to trott around the town while covered only by her long hair. One guy ignored her request, and peeked out of his window, and became known as Peeping Tom, which is where the saying comes from. But yeah, because she did as her husband said, he kept his word, and lowered the taxes.
And when he said "I don't care how many times they go up-diddly-up, they're still gits", this is a reference to the theme song from a 1965 film called Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines.
I'd heard the Lady Godiva story but did not know that was where Peeping Tom came from.
I believe it was her husband who ordered everyone to close their windows and cover them, not her. And I believe she threatened to ride naked through town UNLESS he lowered the taxes and he refused. So she did it. Or am I completely wrong on my history?
@@benwatson5787 I've been told that afterwards for being a perv nobody would speak to Tom which is where the term "Send to Coventry" getting the silent treatment from a group.
@@harrybetteridge7532 That's one theory but since there's no evidence of the phrase being used until 600 years after Lady Godiva's ride it's more likely the phrase "Sent to Coventry" comes from the civil war when captured Royalist troops were sent as prisoners to Coventry which was held by the Roundheads where they were held in contempt by the locals. There are various other theories too but nobody knows for sure.
There's four main series/seasons of Blackadder and each series moves forward in time. It's basically the same characters throughout - they're meant to be the descendents. The first series has Blackadder as being stupid, but the rest they made him the only "normal" one and almost everyone else as being simple. You definitely need to watch them though at some point - the ending of the fourth series is one of the most heart touching moments in sitcom
and don't forget the christmas special. Which contains the best insult of them all(to Baldrick about the subtle plan)
Back and forth was OK but nowhere near as good as series 2-4. Christmas Carrol and the one off episode The roundheads and the Cavaliers however are just as good as the best series 2,3 and 4
The thing I never could figure out how Blackadder et al. ever had descendents since all the characters die at the end of every season without having reproduced.
Yes, those final scenes were executed perfectly.
Ben Elton didn't come on board as a writer until season two and he made the character of Blackadder better, imho.
The ending to Black Adder Goes Fourth is the saddest ending to any TV show ever.

Blackadder is basically Rowan Atkinson playing a similar character through different periods of history - Series 2 is the 16th Century in the court of Queen Elizabeth 1st. Season 3 is the 18th century in Georgian times. Season 4 is during the first world war.
Don't forget the Christmas special in the Victorian era and wasn't there a comic relief episode set in the civil war?

You wouldn't get how great this comedy series was based on this disjointed badly edited compilation. The series followed Blackadders bloodline over 4 centuries. The character George is Hugh Laurie from House (in the US). Blackadder is Rowan Atkinson who played Mr Bean.
I’m convinced Americans watched Hugh Laurie as House, then watched him in Blackadder and Jeeves & Wooster and can’t believe it’s the same man.
I had blackadder long before House was a thing and saw Hugh and Steven guest in tons of work written by Tony and even Edmiston and Mayall. I wasn't big on Fry and Laurie the show nor did I watch commercials but they were both known
I'd say a most likely most Americans didn't know who Rowan Atkinson was until Mr. Bean though.
Us Brits were completely the other way round! Although, tbh, you need to be a good actor to do comedy well so....
My mother just couldn't watch House. We were so into Blackadder and Jeeves and Wooster that she just couldn't accept him as an American who wasn't funny.
I can since I watched these shows long before House came along.
Also the dad in Stuart little.
"Baldrick, your brain is like the four-headed, man-eating haddock fish-beast of Aberdeen."
"In what way?"
"It doesn't exist."
"Eternity in hell will be nothing compared to 5 minutes alone with me and this pencil ✏️"

It doesn't get much more British than this. I really enjoyed watching one of our American cousins react seemed genuine too.
As another American cousin, I can genuinely say I dont think there was a second I wasnt laughing. Ok, maybe at the one or two sad parts, but...yea lol. It's a great show for sure!😁
The format of Blackadder is that each series takes place in a different era and there were 4 series in total. Series one took place in the Middle Ages, series two was the Elizabethan Era, series three was the Georgian era and series four was World War 1.
The clip at 13:00 was from Series one, which you can probably tell is kind of the 'odd one out' in terms of style. It was much grander in scale, with a larger cast, a lot of outdoor scenes and filming on location in old castles and grand houses. The humour was quite different too, it was a 'meaner' type of humour. For series two onwards, they scaled back the production a lot to keep costs down, and started filming it in sets, which were a lot cheaper, and had a smaller, more focused cast. Also, Ben Elton came on to the writing team so the jokes became a lot more refined and well written.
Dont bother with the 1st series. It was a false start, series 2 onwards is the winning combination
The first was not as pulled together but it is still very funny, especially the one with the Spanish Infanta.
I loved the first series. Brian Blessed is wonderful.
@@annastinehammersdottir1290 I loved that one but not as much as the 'death of a scotsman' episode. That was the best.
Disagree, 2-4 are better but that's because they are some of the best television ever made, 1 is only brilliant.
The witch trial is my favourite episode.
A fantastic comedy show. The re-watch value of the episodes are practically endless.
The Lord Nelson joke at 5:00. He was in the Royal Navy and died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. But long before he died; he lost his eye in one battle and then his right arm in another.
Skip the first series, everything after that is pure gold.. the clip compalations don't do it justice! Fantastic work your doing by the way! Thanks!
Actually they found their formula in the last episode of series one. But I agree the other episodes of series one were not to my liking, There is however a select group of people who enjoyed series one the most, I guess it's not easy to please everyone...
@@buggerall I enjoy it the most probably because I get all the medieval references that go over many people's heads. The first series is a lot more clever than people think.

@@AfterWorkReactions The Lady Hamilton Reference is that Lord Nelson was having an affair with Lord Hamiltons wife and every one knew it. The King personally didnt approve and wouldnt recieve Nelson at court over it.
The first series - The Black Adder - was written by Rowan Atkinson and Richard Curtis. It was very expensive and was almost the only series. For series two - Blackadder II - Ben Elton joined Curtis as writer, replacing Atkinson. It only got made because they cut the budget and made it as a standard multi-camera sitcom with a studio audience and using a small number of sets. In the first series Blackadder was stupid and Baldrick was the clever one. They changed this for series 2 - 4 and the show was better for it. As others have mentioned, each series is set in a different period of history, moving forward in time with each iteration.
Yes making Bldrick tghe stupid one was a cunning plan indeed.

It's not on par with the later series, but it's still worth a watch.
Blackadder came out when I was at secondary school. The next morning after the show we would all be quoting Rowan Atkinson in the playground. I think we would be called 'nerds' nowadays!
Nah you’re cool David.
Nah legends
All of us younger nerds are very jealous you got the chance Dave.
Luckily my nerdy parents tried to get me in to Blackadder from about the age of 4 so I didn't miss out for long :)
Gazmus definitely. They had only fools and horses series 6 and blackadder series 4 same year. Height of comedy. So many great shows in general back then
Each season was based in a different era in history. He was always Edmund Blackadder and depending on which era, determined what he was, a prince, a soldier a butler. He was related to his former characters in previous seasons.
Fantastic. As I’m sure you’ll find out soon Series 1 is set in the late 1400s where he’s the son of the King (this is alternate history as it’s a fictional King); Series 2 in the late 1500s where he’s a noble in the court of Queen Elizabeth I; series 3 is late 1700s / early 1800s where Blackadder is butler to the Prince Regent George (son of George III); and series 4 is set in 1917 during WW1 where he’s an infantry captain. In each series he’s supposed to be a descendant of the character in the earlier series, all part of the Blackadder family dynasty. Each series though his social status declines - but he’s always in the middle.
"I have a cunning plan" is now a British catchphrase.
Each series is set in a different time period! my favourite is the 4th series set in ww1!
There were 4 seasons of Black Adder and each season took place in a different period of English history. Middle Ages, Renaissance, Regency, and in 1917 in the trenches of WW1. Great series and my favorite seasons were 2 and 4. The Mr. Bean character that he did in the 90s was quite the departure from the biting wit of the dialogue in the Black Adder series relying on sight gags and silent comedy.
Rik Mayall who plays Ritchie from Bottom was Flasheart (the one that punches Blackadder) - he's the complete opposite in Blackadder. Also Hugh Laurie from House.
This compilation takes clips from all the series which were broadcast over years and years - you did very well to make sense of it. Each successive series was set in a new era, in chronological order, but each series included a part for most of the actors who’d played a central character before. A character called Blackadder, a man with a venomous streak in his personality (like a snake/an adder), played by Rowan Atkinson, appears in each series, but though his social status/context changes with the century, his personality is basically the same in each series. Blackadder is a courtier in Medieval and Elizabethan times, but he is a butler to Prince George (Hugh Laurie) in late 18th century, and a low-ranking officer in the last series set in the trenches in France in World War 1. Baldrick, played by Tony Robinson, is mostly cast as his manservant, but in the 20th century series is a private in the army. Hugh Laurie is a fellow officer by then...
P.S. Josh - has anyone suggested you take a look at some clips of Hugh Laurie & Stephen Fry working together in their own series? They happen to feature playing characters in Blackadder, but you may like some of their sketches, or their TV adaptation of “Jeeves & Wooster” (based on comic novels originally set in 1920s England and the USA).
ua-cam.com/video/nq-dchJPXGA/v-deo.html I think this must have influenced the artist formerly known as “squiggle”....
Jeeves & Wooster stories are classic!

Lady Hamilton was Lord Nelson’s mistress. And, his Lordship lost his eye and his arm in battle. So .... there you go.
And ... the character of George ... do you recognize Dr. House??
The show goes through several seasons. Each season has characters in different times in history. First is the Medieval period, then the Elizabethan period, then the Regency, and then WWI. Blackadder is the evil son of a king in the first, a member of the court in the second, the king’s butler in the third, and a soldier in the fourth. Blackadder and Baldrick are the two characters who are consistently in each season in more or less the same relationship. You really need to watch the whole thing.
i do like the line 'you ride a horse rather less well than another horse!'
The lady Godiva joke about her showing off with nothing to wear is because lady Godiva famously rode through Coventry in UK on a horse naked. 😌👍
Blackadder is set in 1485 Atkinson plays Richard IV son Edmund
Blackadder 2 is set in 1850's Atkinson plays a tudor trying to not get executed by Queen Elizabeth I
Blackadder the third is set in the late 1800's Atkinson plays the Butler of Prince regent aka prince of Wales
Blackadder goes forth is set in 1917 during world war 1. Atkinson plays Captain Edmund Blackadder
Personally think series 2 was the best. Although my favourite episode was in series 1, the witch smeller.

I did history in school but don't remember much beyond what you'd gain from documentaries. However, Blackadder and Goodnight Sweetheart are great ways to learn tiny (if a little inaccurate) pieces of history. Which reminds me. Watch Goodnight Sweetheart. It's brilliant. Love Blackadder especially when Rik Mayall appears in an episode in each series as Lord Flashheart- he’s hilarious in it. If you ever start this series, skip series 1, rowan has a stupid voice which he changed from series 2 onwards and becomes much better

I love the episode - World War I - when Blackadder is just about to face a firing squad. The firing squad go to see him the evening before and introduce themselves! Hilarious. Then we see Blackadder come out the following morning looking blase and the soldier on duty (our lovely comedian, Jeremy Hardy, so talented, and who died of cancer not long ago) says, ''I must say Captain Blackadder, I have to admire your balls!' And he says 'Perhaps later'. Then the bit in front of the firing squad where he is placed in front of a wall and asked where he would like to stand; he says 'behind the wall!' Wonderful.
Not enough from Blackadder 2. It's surely the funniest season.
Hahaha first I though it was the third, then the second and then the fourth. Now I love ALL (but first season)
Yes. Finally an American reacting to Blackadder. I absolutely love this show
Blackadder had 4 seasons, each season plays in a different era, so that's why it seems to jump all over the place. It'll make sense once you watch it. The funny thing about Blackadder is that he's a victim of his own pride.. he calls everyone stupid, but all his scheming to get rich over the backs of others always backfire hilariously. That's the real fun of the show for me. And the supporting cast is brilliant as well and really make the show into more than just a Rowan Atkinson vehicle.

Blackadder: Baldrick, you wouldn't see a subtle plan if it painted itself purple and danced naked on top of a harpsichord, singing "Subtle plans are here again!"
I grew up on this show. Learned quite a fair bit of history through it actually. And the last episode is actually pretty brutal. God this show is funny.
Insults is like a second language to the British
Regarding the "changing timeline" comments near the end of the video, Blackadder ran over 4 seasons, and each season focussed on a descendant of the original Blackadder, all named Edmund and played by the brilliant Rowan Atkinson. Season 1, the Middle Ages. Season 2, The Tudor period (1500's), Season 3, the Regency era (early 1800's). Season 4 , World War 1 period (1914-1918). Many of the other stars also appeared in later seasons, Tony Robinson, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie and Tim McInnerny.
Must be strange for you After Work Reactions to see Mr. Bean and Dr. Gregory House in a comedy show together 🙂
FYI, Prince George/Lieutentant George is played by Hugh Laurie, who, years later, played Gregory House. He was famous for many years in the UK before becoming House.
when you watch it, just skip season 1, it was a flop, Rowan hadn't yet worked it out yet. Season 2 onward is pure gold
Thanks bud =]
Black Adder Goes Forth just brilliant .
The actor who plays Baldrig is something of a genius in real life and has hosted many documentaries of history and archaeology and smart stuff.
Tony Robinson was great on time team. Seen a few of his random documentaries that I enjoyed too. Rowan Atkinson is also a really intelligent guy. Comedy legends
@Rebel Historian I read he also became a hgv driver to research a role, and still does it from time to time because he can. I live in Cambridgeshire, and heard from multiple people that he occasionally drops in and does lectures at one of the colleges also. Might not be completely true, but I don't see a reason to doubt it really. The Strikes me as a guy that goes after knowledge or skills to better himself.
@@damonburn5273 he also has an immensely high IQ and is classed as a 'super genius'
On his own style of humour, in the 2nd series when he's trying to sell his house, and one prospective buyer tells him
'You've certainly worked out your banter haven't you!'
to which he responds immediately
'No, this is a different thing. It's spontaneous and it's called wit!"
You should definitely start watching it on the season based around World War 1
You, sir, are legend, for appreciating this classic British humour. It's the bollocks, as we say in the UK.
this really pisses me off, all the jokes out of context, who the hell told him this was a good video to watch?
Nah, I'm a veteran "Blackadder" viewer and I agree with the man: these are all just elaborate ways of telling a person they're dumb.
Like most British humour creations, the general narrative is just a way to include jokes and sketches.
Although the first episode of "Blackadder II" is a fine example of a good narrative and moreover, it can be watched seperately.
All episodes of a particular series are seperate entities so no need to watch them in order for most part.
With the exception of course of the final "Goodbyeee" episode of "Blackadder Goes Forth"
Definitely better off just watching any one episode from II, III, or IV ... they're all good.
First series is very different...
I've enjoyed this show for decades and the jokes are funny on many levels
Each series is set in a different time period. From the 2nd series onward Rowan Atkinson as blackadder is fairly similar but the character is completely different from how he was in the 1st series.
That is awesome thanks for the info bro =]
I envy him being about to watch these great episodes for the first time!
Thumbs up before I've even watched it
Absolutely standard behaviour for this channel 😄👍👌🏼
Thanks bud =]
Blackadder goes Forth is a brilliant series
You definitely don't need a real knowledge of history. It can help sometimes, but its only ever really extra flavour rather than core requirements. Definitely a show worth watching. Alot of people say to skip series 1, thats up to you, I don't think Season 1 is bad per se, but its a very different creature to teh rest of the series that followed it.
Thanks man, I really enjoy this series so far =] I don't like to skip seasons so if I were to watch this from the beginning I would watch the whole thing.
Skip season 1 and miss Brian Blessed as Richard IV you must be MAD I TELL YOU MAD.
The Elizabethan series, where he had to sell the house to avoid execution, had my favourite line. One of the potential purchasers commented on the awful smell to which he replied "Oh that's the servant. He'll be leaving with me"
I can’t wait for you to do Catharine Tate - Lauren French lesson. Maybe do Lauren in other lessons and situations first then the french one will be funnier Xxx
I think I love your infectious laugh, never worry about not getting the history
As some of the others have said, I would also skip series 1. Still a decent watch but doesn't really represent the humour in the final 3 series and the specials. If I was to rank my favourite episodes it would be a majority mixture of series 3 and 4 with a few episodes of season 2. They definitely got better as they went on and such an amazing cast.
Blackadder is in my top 3 British comedies, only fools is another so I'm really enjoying the Patreon videos pal. Eddie and Rich from bottom both make an appearance in Blackadder goes forth, one of the best episodes. Rich also appears in series 2. Would love this to be the next on Patreon.
I Don't think your have any issues watching the series, yes there are historical references and you wont get everything but primarily its a comedy and you have already proven you get British comedy.
Thanks bud! I really am enjoying Blackadder so far. I will be doing a poll soon once I finish another show so make sure you vote =]
@@AfterWorkReactions The Young Ones is also a masterpiece of British comedy!!!
I'm British some of those went over my head good video mate keep up the good work
