Folks, in case it wasn’t clear in the video. If you buy a controller that runs SDJ Pro out of the box, IT DOES NOT MEAN you have a license that can use on a controller that runs SDJ Lite. You still have to buy a license. For example, if you have a DDJ-SX, it will “unlock” SDJ Pro when you plug it in. But IT DOES NOT MEAN, SDJ Pro will all of a sudden work on your DDJ-SB. YOU STILL HAVE TO PURCHASE THE LICENSE, in order to get your SB to run SDJ Pro. While it is kind of annoying that it works like that, the good news is, you only have to purchase the license ONCE in order to use it with ANY controllers that start with SDJ Lite.
This seems to make sense to me. I purchased and Downloaded DJ Pro on Christmas Day for $64.50. Great deal to me but did not install yet. Purchased a DJ2GO2 which arrived on the 28th. From your description of licenses I need to Download DJ Lite and install with DJ2GO2 connected to my computer first, then upgrade to DJ Pro after. I should not try to install Pro before Lite, is this correct? Thanks for reading and replying in advance.
Pri yon Joni hi, I have Dj sb3 and after my 2 free weeks were over for Dj serato pro I subscribed to the Dj serato pro essentials and it worked that same day I subscribed to it after a week of not using it I tried to go so Serato Dj pro on my laptop and it had the “code error 4” and it said “license ID does not match machine I did contact serato through email hoping they help cus I couldn’t find the button on the website where it shows how to purchase the license

I’m an old school vinyl DJ looking to buy a used DVS to play my digital tunes on my Technics and Xone 62 (torn between DS1 and SL3 following Catalina iOS upgrade). I must have visited the Serato website a dozen times and this was not obvious to me at all. This explained it perfectly - just like your minimum Macbook spec video for running Serato - awesome work. Excellent....I have a Denon 1800x mixer that I use with old school Technic turntables. Recenty went from using SL1 to a free trial run with serato Pro. I should add that I've been DJing since the mid 70s, so at my age I kinda like to keep things simple re: technology & bells and whistles. But this was workning out pretty good for me. So yesterday I actually purchased a month - month subscription / license and suprise suprise... back to square one. Not working. I've been all over the Serato pages, watched a few videos and nowhere where was it explained as clearly as you did that I also needed Serato DVS. You even went through various hardware / mixes & controllers and I was surprised to see that you actually mentioned Denon mixer which made it even simpler for me to understand. Thanks for this video. You clarified and simplified alot for me. Just bought a simple controller (Numark Mixtrack platinum FX) got it up and going with Serato Dj Lite....but then wanted to use Dj Pro... thought it was free. Even if I downloaded an earlier version 2.3.5....nope, still have to pay.
Picked up an original DDJ-SB over the summer and it didn't work right with current Serato so I ended up using Mixxx DJ. I now prefer Mixxx DJ over Serato or even Virtual DJ.
@@kaydwessie296 Mixxx DJ is highly customizable DJ software. It's completely free and well worth checking out if don't wanna fork over a ton of cash for Serato Pro or Virtual DJ. Works great with a lot of older DJ controllers and Midi controllers too. It just takes a bit to setup first time.

Thanks for this video, I have a request since you did a great job on the sb3 vs sb2 video. I feel a lot of people are hung up; me especially, either getting the sb3 or the roland 202. Your thoughts and or comparison? Im mainly looking for something to travel with exactly like you do. I tried the dj2go2 and I require a bit more out of it. Additionally, what kind of backpack do you use to fit your sb3 in while you travel (dj carry on bag that fits controller and laptop etc).
This is a GREAT video (even at 3 yrs old)… I am new to Serato eco sys and this video is actually super helpful. Not to mention, I truthfully can relate to feeling like I didn’t explain something “sufficiently” due to my own ongoing struggles with ADHD as an adult. What if your a club dJ and use multiple mixers. For example when you go to purchase Serato DJ pro it asks which hardware you are buying for. It’s impossible to choose one mixer when I may use multiple mixers with my Serato. Depends on what they have.
Carl Finesse if the hardware is made to work with Serato DJ Pro without a license, it won’t matter if you have a license. If the hardware requires a license, the license is on your laptop so you can use any hardware.

I have a Roland DJ-202 controller & have Serato DJ Pro license (that came with it), works quite nicely. So saying that it only allows you to use Serato DJ Lite isn't correct.

Jannixxx the answer is relies on a few things. 1. If you are using the CDJ in HID mode (recommended), you do not require any additional licenses. That is because you are basically using the device as a Serato accessory along with the DDJ-1000SRT. 2. If you are using the CDJ in DVS mode, which requires a timecode track on a CD or flash drive, you will need the DVS license. I do not recommend this because it is limited functionality compared to HID mode. Also note, if your 1000SRT came with the Serato DJ Suite voucher, then it would include an activation for DVS.

Richard Williams the quick answer is yes. However, some devices don’t require a license since the activation is built into the device. It’s usually devices that are “Serato ready” that require the additional purchase of a license.
Thank you for the very useful info. Here is a strange scenario that I’m waiting for Serato supports response. I have had numerous Serato setups throughout the years. SL1, SL2, Numark NS7 3, Pioneer S9 and the DJM 2000 Nexus. I currently use Serato DJ Pro with two turntables and an S9 without issue. Last night I attempted to connect my DJM 900 and CDJ 2000 Nexus 2 via HID. I connected the hardware via a USB Hub. When I opened the Serato software I was prompted to purchase DJ Pro for $99 or use a 14 day trail. I attempted to activate the software and was unsuccessful. When I reconnect my turntables and S9 it’s still in a trail mode. What do you think?

Here are my 2 questions: 1)I'm big with playlists, i have over 200 from my vdj folder which i have saved over the years from my mobile gigs. How can i transfer them to serato so it will show on my serato pro folder when i open it? I use windows OS. Please tell me its possible. 2)Once i install serato dj pro from the website onto my new laptop, all i gotta do is plug the usb port from port A(From DDJ-SX3 controller) into my usb port on my computer, then open serato pro, and it unlocks, correct? Hey man, thank you for this license explanation. I’m upgrading from a super old NI S4 to a Denon SC Live 4. However, I’m a little upset that I can’t run DVS through it. It’s the right size and I don’t want to go to the larger prime 4. But I’m thinking about grabbing a Denon DS1, if I plugged in the SC live 4 and the DS1, could I run the controller for two decks and my TTbs for two decks?
What really surprises me is that if I were to get a setup consisting of 4x LC6000 and 1x X1850 Prime, I still wouldn't have a license for Serato DJ Pro, if I understand your information correctly.
Hey bro, I'm rocking an old school Serato (Rane) SL-1 but recently bought a pair of Pioneer CDJ 2000nxs2's. Currently rockin the new decks with control discs and they're not connected to each other. I know eventually I've gotta update software and hardware to get the most out of my new decks... any suggestions??? (oh, I'm about to buy a new laptop also, Mac or PC?)
I would get rid of the SL-1 and replace it with a newer one so you can stop using scratch live. It’s 7 years since it’s been discontinued. Also, using timecode under-utilizes your CDJs. I’d you want to get the most out of them, use HID mode instead.

Hi There. Great Video! I have a question: does the DDJ-SX (the old one/first one) unlocks/works with Serato DJ Pro version 2.5.7? Im using a 2010 MacBook Pro, and I've been having issues with my DDJ-SX, it works, but the music suddenly stops and drags like every 10 seconds. I've already downgraded my Mac from Catalina to Yosemite and High Sierra. My DDJ-SX firmware it's up to date, and still doesn't work properly. I would use older versions of Serato DJ Pro before, and it Would work perfectly, now that i downloaded the latest Serato version in order to use PhaseDJ system, my DDJ-SX is giving me the issues i mentioned before. What could be the problem, or what should i do? Thank you!!

Hi Pri yon Joni, I would need some help, as I'm not familiar with this technology. So far, I have only 2 turntables (Technics 1200) as play source and an analogue mixer (Rane Empath, not DVS compatible) that fulfil my needs. I'm now willing to enter DVS world. For that, all I need is an external sound card, a DVS vinyl and licence with Serato, traktor etc... Here are my concerns: 1 - How can I tell my computer/turntables if I want to play a real vinyl or a DVS vinyl ? (Will I have to make the selection back and forth on the rear panel of the soundcard all along my set ?) 2- Once everything is connected. When I will play a real vinyl, will the sound be digital from the sound card or analogue by bypassing it ? Thanks
1. if you are using an interface, you simple click THRU to switch to vinyl. On a mixer or controller, you switch the input selection to Phono instead of the soundcard. 2. When using DVS, you will use a timecode vinyl that controls the audio from the computer, which is outputted through the soundcard. In DVS mode, there is no audio being heard from the timecode record.

what about when you subscribe to serato dj pro. ? i have an sb3 and am subscribed to that on two computers a mac and pc but it still says to activiate or trial. i have the latest firmaware on the ddj sb3 as well as temost recent updated serato dj pro. so am i missing something? it works just fine in dj lite

Yes, get a usb hub. Doesn’t have to be powered and doesn’t have to be usb 3.0. Use a usb 2.0 hub. Virtual DJ lists their supported gear on their website.
So if I have an older mixer would I have to run through an interface to connect dvs on my turntables to Serato ? Or could I just go midi from the mixer to usb into laptop to run Serato?
I have an MCX8000 and recently purchased a Numark Dj2go2. The Mcx used serato dj. The numark uses serato lite. I can't use the license from the 8000 on the dj2go2? I've heard that you can. Confused!!
SEE! Photobooths the way it works is like this. Your MCX “unlocks” Serato DJ Pro. It doesn’t mean you have a full license. It just means you have a device that doesn’t need a license to use Pro. But in order for your Numark to use Pro you have to purchase a separate license. It’s a weird way they do it. However, once you purchase a license, you can use it on any Lite device.

CD Shawn you need a controller or mixer that supports DVS. Depending on which controller or mixer that is will dictate if you need to purchase a DVS license or not. Look it up on the Serato site as I indicated on the video. It tells you everything.
Richard Williams Richard Williams each software has a different answer. Let me go one by one. Rekordbox: 1. Plug and play with with SOME Serato controllers. 2. Possible to MIDI map but will require Rekordbox compatible audio interface/mixer/controller to output audio. 3. DVS only on Rekordbox plug and play devices. Virtual DJ: 1. Plug and play if Virtual DJ has made it compatible (which they do for just about every controller out there. If it’s not out yet, it will be). 2. Possible to MIDI map. I was told the jog wheel is ALSO possible to map in HID mode for better response since MIDI is laggy. Haven’t been able to test it. 3. DVS possible if hardware is built to do it. Traktor: 1. MIDI map only. Jog wheel will have latency since mapping is MIDI only. 2. DVS now possible in Traktor Pro 3 with any hardware that is built to do it. (See my video using Traktor 3 with a DJM-S9).

Thanks for this video, I have a request since you did a great job on the sb3 vs sb2 video. I feel a lot of people are hung up; me especially, either getting the sb3 or the roland 202. Your thoughts and or comparison? Im mainly looking for something to travel with exactly like you do. I tried the dj2go2 and I require a bit more out of it. Additionally, what kind of backpack do you use to fit your sb3 in while you travel (dj carry on bag that fits controller and laptop etc).

What if your a club dJ and use multiple mixers. For example when you go to purchase Serato DJ pro it asks which hardware you are buying for. It’s impossible to choose one mixer when I may use multiple mixers with my Serato. Depends on what they have.
Carl Finesse if the hardware is made to work with Serato DJ Pro without a license, it won’t matter if you have a license. If the hardware requires a license, the license is on your laptop so you can use any hardware.

I have a Roland DJ-202 controller & have Serato DJ Pro license (that came with it), works quite nicely. So saying that it only allows you to use Serato DJ Lite isn't correct.

Jannixxx the answer is relies on a few things.
1. If you are using the CDJ in HID mode (recommended), you do not require any additional licenses. That is because you are basically using the device as a Serato accessory along with the DDJ-1000SRT.
2. If you are using the CDJ in DVS mode, which requires a timecode track on a CD or flash drive, you will need the DVS license. I do not recommend this because it is limited functionality compared to HID mode. Also note, if your 1000SRT came with the Serato DJ Suite voucher, then it would include an activation for DVS.

Once you own the Serato software you can use that license on any compatible official Serato hardware, right?
Richard Williams the quick answer is yes. However, some devices don’t require a license since the activation is built into the device. It’s usually devices that are “Serato ready” that require the additional purchase of a license.
Thank you for the very useful info. Here is a strange scenario that I’m waiting for Serato supports response. I have had numerous Serato setups throughout the years. SL1, SL2, Numark NS7 3, Pioneer S9 and the DJM 2000 Nexus. I currently use Serato DJ Pro with two turntables and an S9 without issue. Last night I attempted to connect my DJM 900 and CDJ 2000 Nexus 2 via HID. I connected the hardware via a USB Hub. When I opened the Serato software I was prompted to purchase DJ Pro for $99 or use a 14 day trail. I attempted to activate the software and was unsuccessful. When I reconnect my turntables and S9 it’s still in a trail mode. What do you think?

No you didn't. You get PnT Flip and Studio which are not available with base SDJ Pro.
DJ Anchlusszeit Serato Studio is not included in the Suite and Serato Flip only costs $29 by itself.

1)I'm big with playlists, i have over 200 from my vdj folder which i have saved over the years from my mobile gigs. How can i transfer them to serato so it will show on my serato pro folder when i open it? I use windows OS. Please tell me its possible.
2)Once i install serato dj pro from the website onto my new laptop, all i gotta do is plug the usb port from port A(From DDJ-SX3 controller) into my usb port on my computer, then open serato pro, and it unlocks, correct?

Hey man, thank you for this license explanation. I’m upgrading from a super old NI S4 to a Denon SC Live 4. However, I’m a little upset that I can’t run DVS through it. It’s the right size and I don’t want to go to the larger prime 4. But I’m thinking about grabbing a Denon DS1, if I plugged in the SC live 4 and the DS1, could I run the controller for two decks and my TTbs for two decks?

What really surprises me is that if I were to get a setup consisting of 4x LC6000 and 1x X1850 Prime, I still wouldn't have a license for Serato DJ Pro, if I understand your information correctly.
According to the Serato website, your mixer requires a paid upgrade to use with Serato, if you don’t have it already.
Hey bro, I'm rocking an old school Serato (Rane) SL-1 but recently bought a pair of Pioneer CDJ 2000nxs2's. Currently rockin the new decks with control discs and they're not connected to each other. I know eventually I've gotta update software and hardware to get the most out of my new decks... any suggestions??? (oh, I'm about to buy a new laptop also, Mac or PC?)
I would get rid of the SL-1 and replace it with a newer one so you can stop using scratch live. It’s 7 years since it’s been discontinued. Also, using timecode under-utilizes your CDJs. I’d you want to get the most out of them, use HID mode instead.

Im using a 2010 MacBook Pro, and I've been having issues with my DDJ-SX, it works, but the music suddenly stops and drags like every 10 seconds.
I've already downgraded my Mac from Catalina to Yosemite and High Sierra. My DDJ-SX firmware it's up to date, and still doesn't work properly.
I would use older versions of Serato DJ Pro before, and it Would work perfectly, now that i downloaded the latest Serato version in order to use PhaseDJ system, my DDJ-SX is giving me the issues i mentioned before.
What could be the problem, or what should i do?

I would need some help, as I'm not familiar with this technology.
So far, I have only 2 turntables (Technics 1200) as play source and an analogue mixer (Rane Empath, not DVS compatible) that fulfil my needs.
I'm now willing to enter DVS world. For that, all I need is an external sound card, a DVS vinyl and licence with Serato, traktor etc...
Here are my concerns:
1 - How can I tell my computer/turntables if I want to play a real vinyl or a DVS vinyl ?
(Will I have to make the selection back and forth on the rear panel of the soundcard all along my set ?)
2- Once everything is connected. When I will play a real vinyl, will the sound be digital from the sound card or
analogue by bypassing it ?

1. if you are using an interface, you simple click THRU to switch to vinyl. On a mixer or controller, you switch the input selection to Phono instead of the soundcard.
2. When using DVS, you will use a timecode vinyl that controls the audio from the computer, which is outputted through the soundcard. In DVS mode, there is no audio being heard from the timecode record.

Yes, get a usb hub. Doesn’t have to be powered and doesn’t have to be usb 3.0. Use a usb 2.0 hub.
Virtual DJ lists their supported gear on their website.

I have an MCX8000 and recently purchased a Numark Dj2go2. The Mcx used serato dj. The numark uses serato lite. I can't use the license from the 8000 on the dj2go2? I've heard that you can. Confused!!
SEE! Photobooths the way it works is like this. Your MCX “unlocks” Serato DJ Pro. It doesn’t mean you have a full license. It just means you have a device that doesn’t need a license to use Pro. But in order for your Numark to use Pro you have to purchase a separate license. It’s a weird way they do it. However, once you purchase a license, you can use it on any Lite device.

CD Shawn you need a controller or mixer that supports DVS. Depending on which controller or mixer that is will dictate if you need to purchase a DVS license or not. Look it up on the Serato site as I indicated on the video. It tells you everything.
What about using Rekordbox, Traktor, Virtual DJ, etc on Serato controllers, mixers, etc? DVS or non-DVS setups?
Richard Williams Richard Williams each software has a different answer. Let me go one by one.
Rekordbox:
1. Plug and play with with SOME Serato controllers.
2. Possible to MIDI map but will require Rekordbox compatible audio interface/mixer/controller to output audio.
3. DVS only on Rekordbox plug and play devices.
Virtual DJ:
1. Plug and play if Virtual DJ has made it compatible (which they do for just about every controller out there. If it’s not out yet, it will be).
2. Possible to MIDI map. I was told the jog wheel is ALSO possible to map in HID mode for better response since MIDI is laggy. Haven’t been able to test it.
3. DVS possible if hardware is built to do it.
Traktor:
1. MIDI map only. Jog wheel will have latency since mapping is MIDI only.
2. DVS now possible in Traktor Pro 3 with any hardware that is built to do it. (See my video using Traktor 3 with a DJM-S9).
