Easily my favorite part of this movie. The absolute moment of clarity as Peter snaps out of the daze as he saw infinity, and focused entirely on Ego. It's such a move for Peter, who's learned that he's basically a cosmic demigod, resort to base human emotion in the time it takes for an audience to gasp in shock. Everything from the dolly-zoom, the music quieting at the sudden realization, even the beats between Ego's admittance to Peter's sudden questioning what he now knew. It's such a great scene!
> Everything from the dolly-zoom, @runedragon1985 Agree with @TheGreatAndPowerfulDC. *Thank you* for mentioning the name of that! I never knew it had a name (silly me - of *course* it has a name it's used so often) I always just thought of it as a "zoom while moving camera". I'd think that for a more "extreme" effect (greater "apparent magnification" [axial?]), the beginning focal length would have to be quite large at the beginning (say 250mm telephoto at the beginning to 32mm wide-angle at the end). But that would mean that the camera would have to be quite far away from the subject unless the subject is like, the size of a toy soldier. Are there special lenses (aspheric) that can achieve a large axial magnification? (Note: I'm not a cinematographer but did do some "old style K1000/Nikon-6006" photography in high school - back when we actually used *film*! Ilford rocks! Not *really* sure about that, but it's what I used. Cheaper than Kodak B/W if I recall.)

Love how everyone here understands that peter did what he did because that's what any human would do that loves their mothers. But then they can't for the life of them understand why he did what he did in infinity war. Love is love and you do anything and everything for it. And if someone rips it away from you like that, you wouldn't be thinking correctly either
I mean thats like saying humanity would all collectively agree on something. There are people that have watched infinity war that haven't watched guardians or if they did, didn't realised the nuance of Quill's character.
I understand Peter’s actions in both, but the difference is in Infinity War he actually had something on the line (i.e. getting the gauntlet off Thanos as soon as possible). Here he had nothing to lose and could just blast away at Ego straight away with nobody in the room, while in IW his actions had consequences not only for himself but also, at the very least, the people in his vicinity. That’s why people were mad like “Damn you just ruined Iron Man’s elaborate plan”
Ikr. 95% of people would do what Peter did in Infinity War without stopping to think twice. I loved that moment because it was so human; you fully understand why Peter's doing what he's doing, you're enjoying (on some level) the catharsis of seeing him try to beat the shit out of Thanos, and yet at the same time you're screaming for him to stop. Great scene.
This was a hint towards Quils rage and how easy it is for him to lose it when it comes to the people he loves. Just like how he lost it when he found out about Gamora, relentlessly attacking thanos.
The funniest thing is that no, he literally didn't know that he fucked up. To him, there was nothing wrong in getting rid of a distraction, and he can't comprehend why Peter reacted like that.
lol, for being a GOD, he is so dumb to say that, why didn't he use his brain that built the cosmos to just lie on that one, what a dumbass HAHAHAHHA, he literally fucked up his own plan lol
We all know that. And he is one of the most powerful MCU characters that Thanos wait to die so that he can do such bad things he did in the MCU as we can ever seen it easily without any hard obstacles like Ego, Hela and etc.
Which reminds me, back when Batman Begins was in theaters in 2005, it was my first time i got mad at a supervillain like Liam Neeson's revealed character, when he told Bruce Wayne how he caused different methods of chaos throughout the centuries and especially in Gotham of it's economics which led indirectly causing the death of Bruce Wayne's parents
"Now I know that sounds bad" He just admitted that he basically murdered the mother of his child who still bearly manged to overcome her death (which he now found out that she was actually murdered). What kind of reaction did he expected peter to have other then rage?
@@melissalayson7275 Here he had a reason to shoot up Ego. And yes Thanos had killed the woman he loved but if he just waited a few more moments to get the gauntlet off of him, then he could've beat the shit out of him as much as he wanted to.
This is probably the most realistic reaction of learning somebody in front of you just killed your parent. You wouldn't start reasoning with them or trying to understand why, you'd just go completely apeshit and try to rip them apart.

It reminds me of when Tony found out Bucky killed his parents, there was nothing rational in his mind at that moment, he was angry and wanted revenge, even though he knew it won't change anything, and there goes The Avengers.
give me a break but then the only life Tony was only risking was his own in this Peter risks his own and possibly his team but in infinity war he risks half of literally everyone and everything and loses
The important thing is, even if it isn't an admirable action, what he did in infinity war, it was the action most of us would have taken under the same situation. Everyone giving Starlord crap for causing half the universe to die, but would you consider that at all? No. You wouldn't. You don't think about the future when your present and past is being threatened. If you're even slightly impulsive, you take action before you speak or think because it's easier to do so in grief.
@E Kobayashi Assuming if he/she's a real Japanese/Chinese person, then his comment is perfectly appropriate culturally. No reasons for you guys to nitpicking.
I can never get over how cool it is to see Peter draw so fast and without hesitation in moments like this, this scene especially and the scene where he just woke up in a hangover in guardians 3 and was ready to throw down with Adam Warlock not having any idea what's going on but just starts blasting. Star Lord is so cool.
Yeah, lots of people hate him but the movie was always going to need a scene where they almost win, but someone had to be sacrificed, someone had to make the "mistake". Thing is, it was perfectly fitting for Star Lord to be the one to do it because he's emotional and acts on impulse under stress of that. He made a rash decision to hit Thanos but it was also such an in-character thing to do that it was perfect.
It explains why he did it, but it doesn’t “justify” what he did because the consequence of his action led to half of all life in the universe being obliterated.
@@malcador He kneows in terms of calcul but to him, they're nothing. This is why he wants to assimilate everything, because nothing else than him (to his knowledge) is as eternal as he is. Oh man, that zoom effect and Peter’s “What?” as his eyes return to normal is probably my favorite scene in this whole movie, with Yondu’s sacrifice being an _extremely_ close second. It’s just such a great moment.
Fun fact: That cool effect is achieved by putting a camera on a dolly and pulling it backwards, but zooming in at the same time. It creates that dramatic background zoom.
Ego remind of my father who treated my bad when she had cancer. I got enrage when I saw that movie after Ego said he put brain tumor in her head. My dopehead dad neglected my mom. She died of brain cancer
All he had to do was not admit to killing his mother and he would've had Peter on his side. Villains literally monologue themselves to death sometimes.
Seeing Peter shoot the hell out of Ego after he revealed he was the cause of Peter's mother's brain cancer was so cathartic for me, especially since I was still recovering from my own father's death by lymphoma three years prior.
GotG 1: his mom dies GotG 2: he kills his real dad and watches his father figure Yondu die Infinity wars: the love of his life dies leaving him with nothing left It’s no wonder he snapped at Thanos when he did.
In IW, the other heroes saw it coming . They felt that he would have that reaction to her death, and really didn't blame him, even though needed him to hold it together. Except for Dr. Strange, because he knew that Thanos had to defeat them on Titan, in order for them to win in the end.

Moments later he loses Yondu, the only paternal figure he has left. So is not far fetched to think that Gamora's death pushed him to the breaking point.
2:53 'Peter, this is the sea...' Referring to the infinite expanse of the universe. CRUSHING Peter's last human comfort to show the relation of the song to his purpose; which was to expand across the cosmos. That single clever existentially dark line is my absolute favorite of this movie and I'm amazed it's not more talked about.
It explains in the movie.. The planet and everything besides his brain is just him manipulating the molecules around himself. The Kurt Russell form is just a puppet, the planet is not part of him. None of it matters except his core.
There’s a reason his name is literally “Ego”. He’s not really a god, he just has immense power and that power went to his head. Of course he has a physical, attackable form.
Everyone applauded when Starlord did this, but I'm sure everyone was quite mad in infinity war where he basically did the same thing to Thanos with the same results. The only difference was, Thanos won that time.

"That guy has a different opinion? Kill him, kill him now! Wholesome poggers moment! I tip my fedora to this legend! He said he doesn't like Star Wars? It's treason, then 😈😈 amirite my fellow 12yo:s?"
I sometimes wonder if Ego was brutally honest with Peter because he subconsciously never forgave himself for killing Peter's mother and wanted Peter to punish him for it. Despite his Egotistical plan, that decision made him question himself to the point where he was never sure he wanted to proceed.
I think it's more like Ego believed that Peter was so far under his control that his son wouldn't have been phased by the truth/would understand Ego's selfish reasons for doing what he did.
@@madamefluffy4788 Ego didn’t realize how traumatizing his former lover’s death was for Peter.
Our emotions give us power beyond thing's like "Ego".
It is a method used in Vertigo, Hitchicok's movie
> Everything from the dolly-zoom,
@runedragon1985 Agree with @TheGreatAndPowerfulDC.

Yeah because Infinity War is treated like a bigger deal.

You mean the stakes that got completely reversed a year later? These are superhero movies, there are no stakes. Love how everyone here understands that peter did what he did because that's what any human would do that loves their mothers. But then they can't for the life of them understand why he did what he did in infinity war. Love is love and you do anything and everything for it. And if someone rips it away from you like that, you wouldn't be thinking correctly either
I mean I get it. There's no direct negative consequence from this outburst. But it's still a stupid critique.
@@divaalfirman3295 exactly, it's not that I don't understand, it's that I don't agree.
Ikr. 95% of people would do what Peter did in Infinity War without stopping to think twice. Everyone giving Starlord crap for causing half the universe to die, but would you consider that at all? No. You wouldn't.

Kurt Russell needs to play more villains. He was outstanding.

Rewatching this, it's obvious that what he did in Infinity War was in-line with his character perfectly.
That will be like the Fifth Element movie in our time line then the future, it might have The Last Avatar instead of the other four elements in one person.
Actually it made sense what Peter did in Infinity War: He had to watch his mother Meredith die slowly, then he had to kill his father Ego because he killed his mother and because Ego was a genocidal bastard. Moments later he loses Yondu, the only paternal figure he has left. So is not far fetched to think that Gamora's death pushed him to the breaking point.
Still doesn't make like quill more...he needs to be less impulsive
@@13Dragonblade Certainly so, but I am exposing the why he did it.
Exactly
2:53 'Peter, this is the sea...'
Referring to the infinite expanse of the universe.
CRUSHING Peter's last human comfort to show the relation of the song to his purpose; which was to expand across the cosmos. Ego let go of his empathy for mortals and could not stay in one place with Brandy (Peter's mother) and must follow his ultimate purpose. That single clever existentially dark line is my absolute favorite of this movie and I'm amazed it's not more talked about.
Never understood why Ego had to have a physical brain?
Plot reasons.
Because he's psychic or some shit, able to project a physical body to utilize and move about.
It explains in the movie.. The planet and everything besides his brain is just him manipulating the molecules around himself. The Kurt Russell form is just a puppet, the planet is not part of him. None of it matters except his core.
Ego started out as a physical brain. That's "the light."

Yeah because there were higher stakes and he ruined a team effort

Starlords attitude can be both a good thing and a bad thing.

I sometimes wonder if Ego was brutally honest with Peter because he subconsciously never forgave himself for killing Peter's mother and wanted Peter to punish him for it. Despite his Egotistical plan, that decision made him question himself to the point where he was never sure he wanted to proceed.
Naah. He is simply too egoist. He can always wait or flee intead of implanting tumor.
I think it's more like Ego believed that Peter was so far under his control that his son wouldn't have been phased by the truth/would understand Ego's selfish reasons for doing what he did.
@@madamefluffy4788 Ego didn’t realize how traumatizing his former lover’s death was for Peter. Up until that point Peter had accepted that his mother’s death was a tragic twist of fate in a cruel universe. But to learn that it was no accident and the one responsible was standing right in front of him? No amount of phenomenal cosmic power would make up for that.
When you said “egotistical plan” was that pun intended?
Ego is too egotistical to be empathetic. His core purpose is literally to make everything in the universe a part of him. He has ZERO empathy, and cannot possibly understand how his words would truly affect others. He's a classic psychopath, and it's a bit reductive to just call him evil. He completely lacks empathy, and is a danger to any form of society due to that.
