Prior to iOS 7, I did not consider getting an iPhone. iOS 6 and earlier were too busy, too heavy and too unfriendly. Since then, iOS 7 and later iOS versions making consider an iPhone purchase down the line. Good job on the operating system, good job.
Great to see someone just wanting things to get better for everyone (regardless of device), not stuck bickering about who is right or wrong... awesome review.
To be fair, the SBSettings jailbreak was also around since about 2008 for ios 2. Both toggles came out at about the same time because its just one of those things you needed on both OS. Difficult to say which came first. Around about Android 1.5 (2009 ish) toggles were a standard thing and were included (as a widget for your homescreen).
iOS 7 is the most underrated os to be on the apple inc history, yes, they removed the skeumorphic design, but they made the iOS 7 Look Timeless, and it’s hard to believe that it’s 10 years ago, it felt like it was made 6 / 7 years ago.
because they patented it. its nothing more than easy money, and if apple, a company that was made for making money (like every other company) will use that. if google will be able to do the same, they will.
Nitay A. Except they don't, lol. Google could put up a low royalty for Android and earn millions, yet it's completely free and open-source for HTC, Samsung, Sony, LG, Motorola, and everyone. Apple on the other hand, used it's 'Lightning Port' patent to prevent anyone else from using a male-plug based charger cable (just one example out of many). Why? Because Apple is a shameless, money-hogging company that hates actual innovation, that's why.
You should have added in jailbreak. 99% of my installed jailbreak tweaks were eventually added in new ios. Ex- Sbsettings, wireless sync, battery percentage, moving wallpapers, swipe gestures, and a heck of a lot more. Idk why apple is trying to get rid of jailbreak, they will actually have to invent stuff if they succeed.
Well now that I remember, you can have an animated gif as your desktop background on windows 98, I don't know if that counts because the capacities of this option were very limited because of the hardware of that time, but you can definitely make the thing move.

Actually, you could set a moving .gif picture as your background back in XP days, something that Microsoft removed from vista and seven... (along with the ability to easily customize your log on sound) I have not checked, but it is probably gone on Win-8 as well... so yeah. There were animated wallpapers before vista came out...

It's all based on the person. I have an iPhone 5s and everything is just right. The screen size is perfect,I can read everything fine etc. the hole point of an iphone is to be able to touch all corners of the phone with only one finger [thumb] usually. And iOS is better and faster when it comes to games. But like I said it's based on the person. Maybe someone has huge hands and iOS devises are just to small.

Marques, the "influences" you described actually came from the jailbreak community before companies even thought of these things. They are the true innovators.
Apples IOS 7 in one sentence "You know all those features you have seen on Android phones and have been dying to have? Here you go, now pay $300 for a phone with the same things a $100 phone will give you"
***** You guys realize although its called Android, there are different company's that make different "Android" phones with different styles and changes to the software, like Samsung, Google, Htc, Sony, etc...
Exactly! Lol people compare the contract price of android phones to the unlocked price of the iPhone. The truth is, most flagship phones cost the same. On or off contract but I notice iPhones are normally on sale but salesmen push the sales of android phones in the store. They never say "hey the iPhone is good" the immediately direct you to an android phone. There are 100 dollar prepaid cheap android phones but they run gingerbread with a 3.5 inch screen and not even a 1ghz processor. I sold one when I worked at radioshack and got cussed out because I sold them a cheap phone that couldn't run any apps. Not even temple run and the few apps it did have installed "Facebook and Instagram" it was out of memory. It had an SD card slot but apps2sd wasn't supported in gingerbread on all devices.
Ignore my last comment and let me rephrase what i'm trying to say. Apple products are over priced, you're paying for the brand. It's like designer clothes, you're paying more for the logo on a shirt than the actual shirt. The actual product isn't bad at all, but the value for money is.
Kevin carterR the things i hate about iphones are: Poor signal strength, break easily, crap battery life and overpriced. i also hate the fact that they limit to what u can do.
no you don't i had an iphone 5s and it sucked so no you don't miss out, infact all the things you can do with a jailbreaked iphone you can do with an unrooted android
As expected, the Android version has a much more visible delay. iOS copies a lot of things, but let's remember that most of the time *cough*maps*cough* (although Apple maps have lots of potential, especially with flyover, from my experience Google Earth doesn't compare) they do it better. Hate is welcome, but this is the truth, and it's an obvious fact, it is also easy to explain.
Do you even know what I'm talking about? Did you check out what i asked you to? 5 more controls, including backlight time, brightness and ability to choose external players and the same functionality as iOS's pull up thing. This is in every way better.
IOS does usually have more speed in its apps, because it is a closed system, there is one version, meaning all the apps are optimised for that one version, and run very well on them. although personally, i can handle a little slowness if it means i can customise my phone to my liking
It’s weird watching MKBHD be pretty balanced when talking about Apple and without any condescension, compared to how Apple-bashy he’s been in more recent years lol
Mate, you should see the dislikes when someone picks on android! Don't get me wrong Android is the best phone out there, but so many hate on the iPhone it's ridiculous.
You can't talk bullshit about apple. Giv'em a hand at the insane power crammed into thin mac's, or superfast chips like the A7. The designs are insane and well done. But that Nexus 5 doh...
So apple sues people for using squares but Google..... come on! step up your game! rip them a new one! P.S. I don't want to share this on Google plus and by golly I will flip my shit if I have to uncheck that check box one more damn time
No not yet ***** . its still experimental and optional. They will probably make it compulsory when they make Android 5.0 but its not finished yet I don't think
A couple of things I noticed off the bat. Live desktops go back at least as far as Windows 95. Notifications bar was on Cydia well before android. That style of multitasking was also used in Expose which has been around in one form or another on osx since 2003.
Mez Nope. My cousin's iPod is jailbroken, and he still can't have *complete* control over his device. With rooting on an Android device, you can control how much the clock speed should be on the processor, how much battery the device should consume, and how much power should be put into the processor to improve its performance. Plus, you can completely customize the UI with rooting, from the layout, to the icon pack, to the gestures. Oh wait, actually, Android can already do that, so rooting will put it *far* ahead of Cydia... ;)
I am an Android user, but I must admit Apple was wise for not including features like widgets and stuffs in their operating system until iOS 7. In the past, smartphones' and tablets' hardware could barely handle all those things that's why Android always felt laggy. Nowadays smart devices are more powerful and Apple has no hesitation to bring all those nice features to iOS and still keep it smooth.
Great history on these various models as always MK awesome review. People will always hate on one or the other. Android or Apple which I say there's room for all great companies alike. We as the consumer win in the end by pushing the envelope on innovations. Thanks for sharing the love all around with the comments. Sincerely an Apple-esta. ;-)
FOR ALL WHO DIDN'T KNEW: Apple and Samsung are working together, thats why there are some features from Android copied to Apple. And, when you say "iPhones suck" or "Samshit sucks", you will actually insult your own Apple Company/Samsung Company. well some fanboys really are shit.
FaowEU And what does that have to do ? , Android is not Samsung , but gives Google , which has to search anymore are you, Samsung manufactures just something for Apple, they are not the software development partners to because it is not that Samsung ANDROID develops, and whether they were true pareceiros because of Samsung attack the apple?
+Faowi Yes, and I agree Brand Loyalty is stupid. I hate how Samsung always shits on apple in commercials but loves to take cues from them (Like Apple themselves do at times.)
Multitouch, slide to unlock, quick settings (double rap home and change songs and volume and I think brightness) touch screen keyboard (the T-Mobile G1 did not have an onscreen keyboard until it got donut) android also copied the battery icon (android batter icon was always vertical but now it's horizontal) and it copied the home button right in the middle (Samsung in particular) android copied the front facing camera, the proximity censor, and so much more! Apple made the iPhone and iPhone made android who it is today! So if we really wanna be technical, half the shit y'all bitching about has already been done. The iPhone honestly copied the notification bar. That's it! But android was always visible, Apple had theirs hidden and now android has theirs hidden too. Android is an open OS. Hell there's nothing stopping Apple from making an Android phone! If they wanted they really could make an android phone!
So, another way of saying that, is Apple's MacBook stole all of it's functions from the original laptops. Screen, keyboard, multi-gesture touch-pad, battery icon, etc, etc. You made 0 points in your comment. Steve Jobs once said "Picasso had a saying, he said, 'Good artists copy, great artists steal' and stealing is something we have always been SHAMELESS about at Apple.". When Android was released, Steve Jobs declared "Thermonuclear war" on Android because it was a "Stolen" product. How different can a mobile OS be? They all have to have the same basic functions. There's a difference between the basic functions of a mobile OS and downright stealing an idea. Apple has never "invented" anything. All they do is re-imagine. None of their ideas have been original.
ArbitraryChaos Thats right... i mean apple didn't invent the mobile, or the touch screen or the mp3 player, i don't understand this "Everyone steals from Apple" argument
ppl with I-devices act try their best to make them seem superior to justify the overpricing which to me equals classist behavior . the only thing i give apple over android is the camera . kitkat is going to destroy apple as time go by
And what's the point of Apple ripping off Android and Windows features, what matters is the product that you're paying for! Apple takes the idea and makes it better, just as many other companies do it, including Google! Android fanboys just keep getting worse, you all need to stop, enjoy your smartphones and stop bitching about Apple.
I think that it is not just Android fanboys, but Windows and Apple as well. I was watching the D5 conference with Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, they don't want those fanboys. Granted, they are competing, but they don't want to make rivals or wars. Yes, Apple is going after Samsung for making a me-type casing of the iPhone because that style was patented. Certain things can be copied, just not everything.
***** ... The first iPhone was terrible lol. It was 'different', but it didn't sell well. The 3rd and 4th generation iPhones (3 and 3G) however, reeled in a lot of cash and support :P
Apple's designs r very very feminine, they use the color white and makes their os way too bleak. Gay men must really love Apple, not that have any problems with gays. I hope Apple should stop discriminating their straight designers.
1:21 there's my old baby phone lasted over 5 years. It finally broke when the scroll wheel fell off the battery lasted like 1 hour there's was dots from messed up pixels on the screen and the charging port was soo sensitive that if you even taped it it would stop charging.
I really enjoy your videos, your good looking, great voice and knowledge has made you my go to youtube guy for information on Apple and others. Great Work!!!
The swype from the left feature was not from google at first. The first time the swype gestures appeared on a cellphone was on the Nokia N9. That was the first phone without even buttons to control it, just swypes. Live wallpapers I think was first on linux. And the live multitasking, just like you said, was first on WebOS, then, a little different live multitasking was on the Nokia N900. Those 2 S.O. were the only ones to have "live" multitasking. Android freezes some things. WinPhone too.
Apple did not come up with the term ''Parallax'', it's been around for a while before iOS7 was released. Parallax scrolling was already everywhere on HTML5 websites.
Thanks Marques. I wish that I could ramble on about where iOS7 Features came from. But, I learned a lot listening to you. Awesome review of iOS7 Features' originality!
Great to see stuff like this that isn't just some Apple or Google fanboy rant. Your reviews are better than 99% of the material put out by major tech sites. Keep up the good work.
Actually I'd say a few things were in other places earlier than the video puts it: -- Live wallpaper: No doubt the mobile inspiration comes from android, but the first ones to do something of the sort was Linux (with 'Compiz' or certain versions/configurations of mplayer that could be put into 'desktop mode' which would essentially turn your mplayer window into your 'desktop wallpaper'). -- Swipe Up/Ctrl Center: Something similar was present in pre-"sense UI" versions of HTC's UI. 'HTC-TouchFlo' (on windows phones), it had a '3d Cube' thing that you could swipe up to get (it looked like the main screen was perhaps the bottom side of teh cube) each side of the cube had various controls and quick-access features. In fact when I first saw the notification center or the ctrl center it immediately made me think of the touchFlo ui. And yea, very good point you made at the end. I think too many people get caught up (myself included) in "OMG apple sucks they steal everything". To be honest, the very nature of technological growth and innovation necessitate sharing of ideas. In a perfect world, everyone would just share ideas and work together, but in our world of commercial capitalism this is the next best thing (Although, there is a point to be made about the whole "apple never innovated anything"?).
iOS 7 has been out for some time now, and looking back on this video it hits home with the history of certain features. Though accurate, I don't think one can truly say that Apples new features "came" straight from other places. I think certain features were obviously needed and Apple made more changes alongside the obvious ones. Still a good video though.
The fact this is almost unchanged in 2022. This was really a legendary update.

***** Well only the top spec android devices are expensive, but take the Moto G for example, It is way less than an iPhone and can do the same stuff.
I dont know how to contact you personally, but the outro track is "Channel 42" not 41 :)
"FaceTime Audio" also known a Voice over Internet Protocol
if u never had any apple product, you missing out
missing out on a load of crap. no ty :)
Wat crap?.... Apple products provide class.
This guy secretly hates apple, he'll never admit it on you tube. I just feel it.
Squirtle Well Apple is bad... so ya
Squirtle The question is who doesn't hate apple?
Squirtle How do YOU know?
tasseldancingmike BOO!
Squirtle What's the point of liking apple? They take "new" features, that other phones have been using for years, and put on a ridiculous price.
You have a bunch of very high quality videos and i really enjoy watching all of them, Keep it up dude !
Google "easy controller" android app. Who does it better?
Fakus Namus iOS, because of better integration with the core OS. Shouldn't be that hard to understand.
Do you even know what I'm talking about? Did you check out what i asked you to? 5 more controls, including backlight time, brightness and ability to choose external players and the same functionality as iOS's pull up thing. This is in every way better.
Fakus Namus You don't get it.
IOS does usually have more speed in its apps, because it is a closed system, there is one version, meaning all the apps are optimised for that one version, and run very well on them. although personally, i can handle a little slowness if it means i can customise my phone to my liking
androids really looked like shit compared to iphones back then
*touchwiz
The Nexus phones were actually pretty decent compared to Samsung's bloated touchwiz
try to show this in an apple event, LOL
Good to see you back in action buddy!
It’s weird watching MKBHD be pretty balanced when talking about Apple and without any condescension, compared to how Apple-bashy he’s been in more recent years lol
Soooo apple took a bunch of good things and made them better. . . I see no problem with that.
LoL
More like worse
More than a 1000 dislikes come from apple fans who think that Apple is always number one and everyone else just copy their stuff. :-)
Mate, you should see the dislikes when someone picks on android!
Don't get me wrong Android is the best phone out there, but so many hate on the iPhone it's ridiculous.
*****
take it easy, who cares about haters?
I don't :-)
Yeah I guess....
iPhone's are probably my favorite though even though android phones are way better. Just Sayin =D
You can't talk bullshit about apple. Giv'em a hand at the insane power crammed into thin mac's, or superfast chips like the A7. The designs are insane and well done. But that Nexus 5 doh...
i like the fact that you dont take sides and you realize it depends on personal preference
So apple sues people for using squares but Google..... come on! step up your game! rip them a new one!
P.S. I don't want to share this on Google plus and by golly I will flip my shit if I have to uncheck that check box one more damn time
Its not real multitasking
The only real multitasking ive ever seen on a phone is on Paranoid Android roms :P
You mean Android with its Java virtual machine? Damn right.
No not yet ***** . its still experimental and optional. They will probably make it compulsory when they make Android 5.0 but its not finished yet I don't think
It is now 😀
Yeah. Android also copied the lock screen notifications
That is a lie.
+Quade Carter I want what you're smoking.
True
Apple: the only company that uses bing except the company that made it...
apple copied android and android copied apple, simples as that.
***** iOS what? both companies copy each other
***** neither is IOS
***** but you undertood what i meant with my first comment right?
***** Actually android inc is a company, now a subsidiary of Google.
Michealkinane thanks x)
OMG! Apple stole ideas off other people?? No way..
Uh yeah well duh
WTK - Perfection lol you are subscribed to pewdiepie, no need to reply with an insult lol , you give yourself grief.
Geoff W. Him and 18 Million other people are Subscribed to PewdiePie.
7'sGaming 20+million
Yeh well when I posted that comment it was 18Million +
It just pisses me off that Apple seems to sue everyone for paten infringements and yet it seems they are the biggest infringers in this case.
They're a money grabbing company. What'd you expect?😅🤷♂️
A couple of things I noticed off the bat. Live desktops go back at least as far as Windows 95. Notifications bar was on Cydia well before android. That style of multitasking was also used in Expose which has been around in one form or another on osx since 2003.
One word, Cydia.
Android still beats Cydia...
Lol, with Cydia, I can turn my iPhone into an Android...
Mez Lol, with rooting, I can turn my Android into a PC...
And Cydia can't?
Oh wait, actually, Android can already do that, so rooting will put it *far* ahead of Cydia... ;)
2022 anyone?
AirDrop.... has anyone actually seen someone use that?
Um.... Yeah, like ALL the time. Lol
Ramal Wickramasinghe ive never seen anyone use that, yet hundreds of people using nfc, yet I see 2x more iphones then I do Android Flagships
Just the weird world that we live in surrounded by all sorts of tech.
Well, nowdays your comment Is soooo stupid. Everyone is using AirDrop
***** Search google first
Actually yes they do work together! come to think of it samsung makes most of apples batteries and apple develops some software features
***** they work together...samsung makes the Processors for Apple..
ArbitraryChaos Honestly I read the first two lines and didn't read the rest.
Jamell Lewis Typical Apple fan boy
ArbitraryChaos Thanks for explaining the same thing i would write in a comment here. :)
Steve Wozniak was the right guy, Jobs just ruined it.
ArbitraryChaos
Thats right... i mean apple didn't invent the mobile, or the touch screen or the mp3 player, i don't understand this "Everyone steals from Apple" argument
Basically they are are selling old wine in a very attractive bottle with a huge price tag...great video dude... Peace ✌
ppl with I-devices act try their best to make them seem superior to justify the overpricing which to me equals classist behavior . the only thing i give apple over android is the camera . kitkat is going to destroy apple as time go by
Apple is just good at stealing other tech ideas & claim to be the first to invent it!!!
Apple invented hot water when they added fingerprint scanner.
I know there's phones in 2010 that have fingerprint scanner, and even earlier
***** Shit...
They will probably count 100$ per 1 liter of hot water... iBolier...
***** Yes. And Android is going to copy it soon.
Brigapes I've heard about its new version in Android. They'll call it Hot Puff-Cake version 1.1
Perry Tilton I know, I just said it based on experience.
just admit ios 7 copy android dont try to cover the moon with your finger with your explanations
***** ... The first iPhone was terrible lol. It was 'different', but it didn't sell well. The 3rd and 4th generation iPhones (3 and 3G) however, reeled in a lot of cash and support :P
Breaklog Samsung doesn't own Android, it's Googles baby.
Android wouldn't exist without Apple, but yet at the same time, iOS wouldn't exist without Android.
***** Apple was released on 1976, so who's first?
Nice description bro ! now i can tell people about what came from where on I phones lol
iPhone sucks
I think we can all agree to this statement.
Isai Sanchez Yes, enjoy your locked down OS, overpriced devices, and Samsung processor iSheep.
Isai Sanchez CrAPPLE iShit
Cole MacMillan so i guess im also a fanboy???
Yuk... i hate ios
im not sure.... dont wory, ill show myself the door
+Geolistic You don't have to like an OS to watch a video about that OS. That logic makes no sense.
Apple's designs r very very feminine, they use the color white and makes their os way too bleak. Gay men must really love Apple, not that have any problems with gays. I hope Apple should stop discriminating their straight designers.
Most users of Android are men, so lots of women use iOS.
Do You even know what bleak means?
There are more gay friendly apps on the Android store, so I think your information is wrong.
what im trying to say is apple uses their products to manipulate pop culture and makes the norm realy realy bad.
Harmonyww because google doesnt restrict their app store
1:21 there's my old baby phone lasted over 5 years. It finally broke when the scroll wheel fell off the battery lasted like 1 hour there's was dots from messed up pixels on the screen and the charging port was soo sensitive that if you even taped it it would stop charging.
Android sucks balls
How, and don't be a dick I just want to know what your reasons are.
I got an android tablet and I just hate the operating system I think that it is just stupid
SABRESROCKGAMING But how is it stupid?
SABRESROCKGAMING so you're the dumbass that's buy a tablet from the get go knowing you're gonna hate it. Wow the stupid in this one is very strong...
SABRESROCKGAMING What android tablet?
I think the jailbreak community has a big influence here too.
Awesome review of iOS7 Features' originality!
dude you rock! It's my second of your videos and I loved it! Keep the good job
this video was recommended to me on May 2022 :)))))
Great to see stuff like this that isn't just some Apple or Google fanboy rant. Your reviews are better than 99% of the material put out by major tech sites. Keep up the good work.
Actually I'd say a few things were in other places earlier than the video puts it:
-- Live wallpaper: No doubt the mobile inspiration comes from android, but the first ones to do something of the sort was Linux (with 'Compiz' or certain versions/configurations of mplayer that could be put into 'desktop mode' which would essentially turn your mplayer window into your 'desktop wallpaper').
In the description it says the song is called Channel 41, but It's Channel 42.
why did this exact video got recommended to me
Absolutely love your videos Marques! Always top notch!
Great reviews and nice topics.
Videos are enjoyable to watch. Many different mobile devices reviewed and well explained!
Subscfribed definitely!
iOS 7 has been out for some time now, and looking back on this video it hits home with the history of certain features. Though accurate, I don't think one can truly say that Apples new features "came" straight from other places. I think certain features were obviously needed and Apple made more changes alongside the obvious ones. Still a good video though.
nic video BTW The song at the end is amazing don't change it
