Mazda MX5 Long Term Owner's Review!!

  • My 2018 Mazda MX5 Miata ND has been with me for 2.5 years now. This video will share with you if the Mazda MX-5 Miata is a keeper car, and what to expect if you are contemplating a purchase. My MX 5 is a 2018 miata, which makes it an ND1. I modified it to suit my driving style and personality. Here I discuss the Miata's trunk space, the interior room, driving response and how it makes me feel after over two years of ownership. I also talk about some maintenance areas like the soft top, as well as the paint of the MX5. I also mention my Miata's 2 year fuel economy, which will surprise a lot of people. It is a fuel miser, despite being a peppy and responsive sports car.

    I’ve had my ND1 since November 2015 and it’s still a thrill to look at every time I walk up to it , and an even bigger thrill to set out on the road .
    In my opinion the Miata is the world’s sports car of record. there are certainly faster cars out there but none really add to the pure driving experience that a Miata eagerly bestows to its driver.

      What did you like about this dull machine gray color, how is that more than just a primer color ? I ask because I’m a painter of 45 years, so I know about colors. Help me understand, really I mean it sincerely. Other than because you just like it, compare it to something like a match to some idea or reason that color works for something special .

    • @Scott.Mariani
      @Scott.Mariani 4 роки тому

      @@hugot12 Good question. As a painter I would be surprised if you ever saw a primer with a deep color like the Machine Grey. Since color is a very subjective and personal thing I will not argue the point with you because you obviously have very strong opinions about it. To me the Machine Grey, with the NDs sexy lines, evokes images of a smaller Aston Martin or McClaren F1. I find the Machine Grey with red highlights make me smile and to me that is what matters. I really like the Soul Red and I have had several sports cars in White with saddle tan interiors so obviously I like that combo too. I hope that helps you understand a little bit of why I love my current Machine Grey ND Miata.

    • @hugot12
      @hugot12 4 роки тому +1

      Scott Mariani I have to apologize, that isn’t the grey I thought it was, it is kinda stealth classic looking like the Aston Martin. With the right wheels in that metallic darker grey color are perfect. Withe nice lines of this Miata, that color will show it off. My soul red is very hard to touch up the tri color. It’s a base metallic of copper red, transparent red as second coat before the final clearcoat. None of the metallics are going to be easy to deal with. I had the front bumper, partial hood,front section of fenders clear guard applied. Now I’m at peace from rock chips .
      Good luck with that nice Miata of yours

    • @Scott.Mariani
      @Scott.Mariani 4 роки тому

      @@hugot12 no problem. I am glad our conversation was enough to get you to take a closer look at the Grey. I replaced my Beep Beep horns with a Tornado Twin Tone yesterday so when I am driving in stealth mode, one downside of a dark car, I can make my presence known if needed.

    I’ve got a week-old 2020 Miata RF GT automatic Soul Red-and have spent so much money on adding stuff on it (most of the cost is labor of dealer installations): footwell lights, the quilted mats, alloy pedals, the trunk tray, and other little things- almost all ideas came from watching your videos. Next week, I’m having the interior and exterior ceramic coated.
    I haven’t had much time to drive since I’m working from home 100% due to pandemic. And most of where I go at 15-mile radius, I use my bikes and electric scooter. Right now, I guess- I enjoy just ADMIRING/LOOKING AT this beautiful car than driving it. Haha.
    I do miss my 2016 MINI Cooper S Convertible, however (it has lots of stuff in it that I did not have to add anything when I bought it).

    I have the 2016 soul red automatic. I had manual transmission enough in my life since I’m 64 now. If you take the time to learn the auto trans , you will realize how great the auto/ manual option is just perfect. I live in Northern California, riding in the mountains, the Ducati race bikes can’t keep up in the twistes .My auto trans with paddle shifters is only in 3-4 gear as in the corners your not shifting much. If you know what your doing in manual mode, trust me it’s sweet as pie. In traffic brothers, you will curse the on off clutch pedal. Hands free enjoyment, if you want more rpm, use sport mode. Sorry the RF. Lines are horrible, sleek long body design looks shortened to a stubby little car. This car was meant to be a total unmodified convertible with a soft top. RF looks like the Buick Opel from the 70’s. The car is too small with the fastback targa top design. With the black or white grey color, it’s even smaller looking . Dark rims also make the car with the dark colors look even shorter. It’s as if the soul red with silver rims make the car look longer, sleeker, flowing the lines out properly. Any dark color emphasize a short car too much This is not a Daytona Ferrari in length, but with the top down, soul red and silver rims, it looks more like a little Ferrari. I have almost 4 years with this 2016, it still looks perfect, and is a blast of a great handling car.

    • @ReygansRides

      It's the best automatic transmission found below $40,000. 90% of MX5s sold here are A/Ts.

    • @hugot12
      @hugot12 4 роки тому

      Reygan's Rides my wife first leased this car, then we finally bought it outright. Of course some dealers tried to lease these few MX-5’s available for almost 525.00 per month, I paid $400 per month. Leasing a Miata isn’t always good. I think when it was all done, we paid about 32k or more. The best deals were the 2018 cars, they offered them at such a discount, especially when the 2019 was near launching. That 2016 of our was more costly as the first of this new model and the demand for them with higher lease negotiations. Leasing works if your almost never going to move on from leasing and a more expensive sports car higher leasing costs, then it works better than buying eventually just getting an older car .
      Moving up to a new car every new lease always avoids maintenance costs , repairs, new tires etc.

    Ever since I bought my 30 th anniversary edition mx5, it has been my daily driver and I love it. Obviously it's impractical being a 2 seater (having never owned one before I had never thought I would have to put my jacket in the boot every time if I have a passenger, things like that) but for 95% of my commutes (to work and back) its awesome. I am lucky enough to drive in a low trafic road full of successive roundabouts with full visibility that I can just tear through or oversteer through when I fell like (which is most of the time, I go through tires like they were candy).
    My only gripes with the car are the excessive body roll even with after market coil-overs and the fact that the new 181 hp motor doesnt like turbos so I m limited to 220hp given by the BBR package. My "family" car, a stage A 2012 WRX-Sti, whips my Miatas ass on the track. Still, I prefer drivng the latter.

Will I be able to drive comfortably without touching the springs or doing any coil over stuff? Basically keep everything stock except the wheels and tires. Oh, BTW, I really like your Fujimura exhaust. I'm planning to get the HKS Legamax Premium ones from rev9. I liked quite a few others but want to stick to a twin tip one. Any suggestion?

    • @ReygansRides
      @ReygansRides  3 роки тому +1

      Hello Haseeb! The wheels and tires are perfect for the ND, advan made them with the MX5 ND in mind. So no issues at all. However, it will sit taller if you don't lower the car. That's why I changed to coilovers so I can adjust the height settings. The Legamax is a great exhaust, not too loud but sporty sounding enough. Go for twin tips if possible. Enjoy your MX5!

      Reygan's Rides Hello once again! Thanks for the advice. It’s worth mentioning that we have quite a number of speed-breakers back here, some of which are abnormally high. Therefore there’s always a good chance of brushing the undercarriage, which happened a couple of times. And if by putting the beautiful Advan wheels gives an inch rise to the car (which would be beneficial a lot of times), will there be a performance or a handling issue? Regarding the exhausts, I have shortlisted a couple more ie. the Goodwin racing and the Flyin Miata hush-o-matic. What do you say? Thanks for all your advice.

    • @ReygansRides
      @ReygansRides  3 роки тому

    Anyone know if the mx5 soft top mt has the limited slip differential like how the rf manual has it?

    • @ReygansRides
      @ReygansRides  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, it is standard in all local MT NDs.

      @@ReygansRides thank you so much! I'm on the fence with purchasing the soft top because of 2 reasons mainly if it had an lsd and the durability of soft top when it comes to our weird local weather haha. Gonna be getting my own mx5 this september. If i go for the soft top manual i can get it immediately but if i want the rf i have to wait for 6 months after paying for it.

      @@nooberp4020 go for the manual ND soft top if you like driving top down a lot. The RF is for those who occasionally drive with top down.

    Sir, ano po mas better bilhin mustang or miata rf?

    • @ReygansRides
      @ReygansRides  4 роки тому

      I like both, it depends on your preference. Mustang is a muscle car with great straight line performance and passenger comfort while the Miata is a car that puts handling and weight savings at top priority.

    • @loumartin8851
      @loumartin8851 4 роки тому

      I have a Mustang, and next year when I buy, it may very well be a Miata, but current Mustangs, even without the Magna Ride handling package, let alone with it, are far, FAR better in the twisties than they used to be. I can't say if they handle better than a Miata, (though I'd bet with the Magna Ride handling package they do), I'm just saying that the S550+ generation, (2015 - Present), are not just straight line performance machines, they actually handle twisties very well. Still... I'm kinda chomping at the bit to scratch that Miata itch I've always had, lol.
