DOUGSCORE CHART: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/... - Авто та транспорт
I’ll never understand how Doug comes up with those scores,,, like:
Engine “engine is not that powerful and the car is heavy so that gives an 8 out of 10”
Comfort “awesome seats, great material and plenty of leg room so that gives 2 out 10”
8 + 2 out of 20 gives you 3848854 out 100 which puts the car above my bicycle but below my spaceship
Lmao that shits mad funny 👏👏👏👏

@Hey Big Rob Fitness Watch my fuarkin video No. They are actually to conservative
Me: No glovebox?! Bad.
Also me: *never uses the glovebox
It is one of the things I dislike about the ND. No door side pockets either so where do you keep maps (yes I like paper maps) or driving gloves.
It has a glovebox..
Things that go in the glovebox: crumpled up tissues, pens without ink, receipts, a tire pressure gauge that doesn't go lower than 20psi, anonymous coin sized plastic pieces, and straws.
12ealDeal Fastfood napkins, expired gift cards, that plastic trim screw that fell off the car but you don’t know from where and it could be important so you just toss it in there.

The 1990 gave you the same feeling with 115hp. It’s simply one of the best cars ever made, no matter the generation.
I totally agree, we may not be in the golden age of the RX-7 anymore, but Mazda has never let the Miata stray from what it has always been. A fast, light, smiley little car that’ll guarantee more fun than a Mustang on a track day and in daily driving.
Hopefully this will be my first car.

Keeping the Miata roughly the same very light weight and increasing the horsepower from 155 to 181? That's a no compromise win right there
If they would put a turbo and have it at 225-250 it would be perfect
A factory miata with a turbo wouldn't be a miata imo. They've always been low horsepower, low maintenance, high fun cars. If someone turbos it, that's fine, but I think they should stay N/A.

They still lost weight even with the power top...
Why, why, Whyyyy give me a real spare tire. If you can make this car lighter than it's predecessor you could have figured out a way to have gotten a spare tire in there somewhere.
"car does not have enough power" then gets excited about how fun it is. Clearly the power is enough
0-60 in less than 6 sec. will do nicely, in my book.
The 0-60 is almost as good as my G37 which has 330HP
em745a lol no it’s more like 1200-1300lb heavier.. I have the lighter RWD sedan version and the RF adds over 100lb to the mx5
but I guess in its heaviest config with full tank of gas vs mx5 soft top it might be more like 1500lb
but yea I’m convinced mx5 rf will be my next car
Even the 2016-2018 with 155hp is a pretty quick car. People look only at peak hp numbers and ignore the power curve and more importantly the torque. My 2017 rf launch edition is a torquey car for its weight and is a blast to drive with the 6mt. If you don't smile ear to ear driving a miata then you don't like fun cars.
I have a ridiculous little Ford ST150 pocket-rocket that came with GT stripes from the factory just to make sure everyone pointed a laughed.
The few that have driven it were shocked and had a huge grin at the end though cos it handles so and is just fun to drive.
It's a road legal Go-Kart with a 2.0L engine so no tube lag, weighs less than this Miata and it eats corner better than most AWD Subarus I've driven....... I love it.
The MX-5 was only ever called the Miata in the US. Say “Miata” to someone in the UK and only petrol heads and those that payed NFSU will know what you’re talking about. I love the RF version just for being so different to anything else of that size, price point and ilk. Great video as always Doug.
the Miata was the original name and it was created for the American and Canadian market- not UK.
@@mjor6406 I’m aware of the Canada/US target (taking inspiration from classic British sports cars), just pointing out the name used in the UK and lack of the use of the Miata name outside of the North American continent. 👍🏾
I got a soft top in April this year and coming back to watch some of the videos that pushed me to buy it, makes me very happy with my decision. I am in love with this car even with the normal “drawbacks” such as trunk space and interior room. It is perfect for me and I don’t regret selling my Malibu to get one of these because the driving experience is just sublime, even at 181 hp. You don’t need more in one of these. If anyone is wondering or hesitating, go for it, you won’t regret it!
Same here, i got a soft top manual miata 2020 and its been the most fun ive ever had in a car since i bought it, just coming back to see all the reviews that pushed me into getting it, its super super fun!!!

Brilliant
5.8 seconds to sixty isn’t slow, what the hell. Not everything needs to be a rocket ship
Doug's scale and opinions are heavily biased towards the higher end of the spectrum. The Miata hustles, but think of all the crazy machines he reviews. It is clear, at least to me that he does very much appreciate lower-power normal cars, but driving 2s and 3s and 4s so often likely has numbed him to thinking that 5.8 is slow. Sort of like what happens to bikers after we've owned something with 100+hp for a little while (reminder, bikes are light); 4.0s 0-60mi/100km starts to seem like a minimum acceptable value....
But nobody really needs to defend the acceleration of a Miata, that's not the point
I like the idea of being able to prod that redline without upsetting the local police too badly. Hp is probably just about perfect where it is for maximum surface street fun.
Compared to a V6 Honda Accord with a cold air intake takes 7 seconds to get to 60
As fast as older Gen Boxsters. I test drove a 2019 and I thought it was pretty good.
Sure, if it could get near or crack 200hp, that would be great. But Doug mentions the Mazdaspeed Miata and that Turbo version is SLOWER than this generation Miata.
lol, you're yelling "I want a LACK of power".
That lock beep volume thing is actually awesome. When you come home late and my car goes ITS FUCKING LOCKED lmao

Miata's are build well.
I daily drive an 1999 NB, it lives outside year round because I do not have a garage and I just love it. It is just the daily fun that lifts up the commute and then it is fun for weekends as well. And you can drive with the roof down even when it is snowing (and even when it is raining as long as you go fast).
PS. Four wheel drifting in the snow rocks.
Nah, it will. Most miatas from the 90s are still going today, same with the NB and NC. I think it will last.
mine's about to turn 30 and it's still going strong, nice try
Wow, look how far we've come now your Miata warns of speed cameras when your speeding. Back then, you just didn't have to worry about speeding in a Miata unless in a school zone. Miata still gets the award for smiles per gallon.
Doug missed the biggest ND quirk/feature, under the hood. The Skyactiv engine runs primarily on compression ignition, rather than electronic or mechanical(like a diesel). This means that the powerplant has a 13.0 compression ratio...and good luck boosting that while not destroying the rotating assembly. The engine makes power like a gas engine, but has many of the quirks typical of diesels. It has the "lopey" diesel idle(REALLY pronounced on cold oil) and many of the typical diesel low-rev noises. It also runs like garbage on cold starts, when the engine is reliant on the electronic ignition(you can tell when the computer cuts it off and it magically smooths out). The best part is the high compression drag on downshifts, it has mechanical drag like a V6 or V8. I wonder how many people think that there is something wrong with it, when it is just how the machine operates.
The Miata's secret weapon is that it is like Nissan's Z, or Dodge's Challenger, it is an experience car. It is not about numbers, or being the best in it's market position. It is about the joy of driving, and a car that makes you smile. So few cars exist, like these, that are about enjoying the commute today, not aspirations of what you MIGHT do tomorrow.
The Miata is so beautiful, it looks so smooth and sleek, it's like a caress in your cheek.
Nice poetry

18:18 To be fair, the 2019 miata is over 400 lbs lighter with only around 20 horsepower less than the BRZ of the same model year. While I agree with his point that it needs a little more power to compete in the modern era, the BRZ is disproportionately underpowered.
It is it’s what people been complaining about since the brz came out
The Miata came out in 1989 and the BRZ in like 2012 so indeed it should be held to a different standard
@@roddydykes7053 Hes comparing the current model year every time. Just cause a car has been around for longer doesn’t mean it doesn’t have to compete with the market.
The funny thing is that the BRZ in reality has 170/180cv with a big hole in the mid range power, while the Mx-5 is sooo progressive from low.
I personally own an RF, and the less powerfully 1.5 version. It doesn't need more power at all, the BRZ is nowhere near as fun as the MX-5 for bends and turns. That's why the MX-5 doesn't need more power, you don't buy an MX-5 for drag racing or straight line speed, you get it for going around bends faster than you should.
I love that you speak quickly, I get so tired waiting on some UA-camrs to just spit it out. Well organized too. Good job!

Envious!
With a manual transmission the 0-60 times difference between the Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ and the Miata MX5 is small (0.3 seconds), the Difference between the automatic transmission is 1.2 seconds. That's a big difference
As an mx5 owner let me add:
- you missed the TWO secret storage cubbies behind both seats. Each are the size of the glove box. Good for manuals etc.
- the stalk in the intstrument cluster also does the dimming for the dash if you twist it.
- yes, we do ignore the gear position indicator but are often infuriated by its ridiculous suggestions. 1700rpm in 5th- it wants you to go to 6th. So you shift and rpm drops to like 1300 and then the engine is lugging so bad as to be useless. GAH mazda should ditch the stupid thing!
there's only one secret cubby in the RF (behind the passenger seat) - only the cloth top gets 2 cubbies. (unless they changed it recently)
Mr Doug, Pontiac put speakers in the headrests on the fiero
The shift indicator truly is stupid.
Is there a way to reprogram that ridicolous shifting advice to more RPMs?
The gear position indicator is a lot more useful than you suggest; you just have to know how it works. Putting aside the value of informing you what gear you are in (which is sometimes useful -- e.g.,you get on the highway and get up to speed, but forget to shift from fifth to sixth gear), the indicator varies its suggestions for upshifts depending on how you drive the car. If you are just loafing around town and accelerating mildly, the indicator will usually suggest one gear higher than you might otherwise think to use, and may even sugest that you skip a gear, in order to save gas. (Which you are of course free to ignore... unlike that "skip shift" manual transmission GM used in some Corvettes.) The relatively high torque of the engine and low weight of the car means you will not lug the engine by following that advice. On the other hand, if you romp on the car, accelerating briskly and winding out the engine in each gear, the indicator will suggest holding each gear longer and will not suggest skipping gears, as the suggestions of the indicator will then be based on maximizing acceleration rather than gas mileage.

Doug the type of guy to review a lykan hypersport and then a Toyota Prius the next day
They're not going to make a high horsepower Miata. The whole point is to have one of the best driver cars out there which means having the most fun driving it. When a car has around 250hp or so and up, you're not using all of that horsepower the majority of the time whereas when you have 150hp, you're flooring it everywhere which makes the overall driving experience greater in my opinion.
I'd beg to differ. True 250hp might be too much, but 150hp is definitely not enough. I see them getting destroyed in autocross and time attacks all the time. the 181hp 2019 might be good. I'd stick with s2000's or kswap/2zz mr2 spyders.
@@MR_71_BLACKBIRD excuse me, not enough for who exactly?
I only hear this from Americans, and it's amusing, since their speed limits are a joke and are enforced hard. The rest of the world also gets the 1.5l 130hp version, which is plenty enough for having fun with such a light car. Take this on a European or Japanese mountain road , and it's perfect.
Also in many countries cars are taxed according to their power, so having too much hps makes it too expensive to maintain.
Not too sure where you're going with the American culture thing. You're giving off a snobbish European bias. Americans constantly drive over the speed limit and do so brazenly on interstate highways. We don't have emissions restrictions in most states and absolutely no HP restriction but that's not the point. My point was take this light car where its supposed to shine and it falls behind. I've seen it get beat down habitually in autocross, time attack, and road course racing. Hence why they're making the mx-5 club car because it is not competitive at all. If I were wrong they wouldn't have made the mx-5 cup car. They especially wouldn't release it in the states if it were competitive. If the cost of maintaining a 200hp coupe is too expensive to maintain you really shouldn't be buying a sports coupe to begin with. It's only $60 for 5 quarts of mazda moly oil with a filter. My 190hp 2zz mr2 spyder is only $65 for 6 quarts of motul 0-40 with a filter and I crush miatas every track weekend(except for boosted 90-97's).
The Miata doesn’t need high horsepower because it’s lightweight, with that it feels like your going fast
I've owned an RF for a year and had no idea about the speed camera recognition, thank you!
I had a sweet power sunroof in my 1988 Mazda RX-7, but this car takes malleable roof design to a whole new level. I LOVE the roof in this car!😍
not many cars could beat it in the curves..

Doug the type of guy to call the police when UA-cam goes down.
I'm dying I don't know why that was so funny
I remember being 18 when this video came out and thinking “damn, i wish i could buy one of those things one day, they are gorgeous”. I bought a 2016 black mx5 at 20 years old and been driving it for two years, Thank God for this opportunity
i’ve been thinking of getting one for a daily driver for myself , they look nice and the interior is amazing , manual transmission and 2400 pines with a retractable fastback sounds amazing . either that or i’m going for speed and power .
Doug is the kind of guy that goes into tire shops and take a good whiff of the fresh rubber.
And say"Good Morning Ladies. Are you ready for my Dough Score!
you could review a brick and I’d probably still watch
Chizzy JV the Supreme brick?
i'd be more likely to buy the brick than this piece of #$@&
He’d even review all its quirks and features and review it on autotrader.
LOL... but, only if it had wheels.
"And today i'm going to show you all the quirks and features of this brand new 2018 brick".
Thank you so much Dough! This review was amazing✨✨✨✨
I marvel at (appreciate) the minutia like the raised dots on the key fob, just like I love how my Panasonic cordless phones have a round, raised speaker port that is perfectly centered so that if you lay the phone on its back and spin it, it will go on and on, perfectly balanced - lol! An engineer or product designer literally had to literally build that in, as the location and balance are absolutely perfect, tho it serves no purpose I can think of. Doug, you're not geeking out alone ;)
My Mazda experience was a new 2003 Mazda Speed Miata. I had it for 10 years and put nearly 200,000 miles on it. I did regular maintenance on it and when I traded it, the original clutch and brakes were still on it. No squeaks or rattles. Fit and finish still looked new. Not one mechanical failure or repair. The mpg was high and insurance was low. For the money, you can't beat it.
bob wallace well said. Hands down best sports car.
@69mrbrightside691 I have a 370z right ow and have had 7 starting with the 240 and up. I've had those all my life. Even though these are faster, they are also heavier, get half the gas mileage and are coupes. The new Miata looks like a BMW clone from the outside to me. To answer your question, I would not rule one out.
Features score is 5/10. Lane departure, rear backup camera, heated seats, nav that tells you to watch out for speed cameras when you're speeding, Bluetooth, climate control, power roof. C’mon, Doug! It definitely has all the modern car amenities one expects. What’s deceptive is how analog the car actually feels. It doesn’t feel like you’re playing a video game, it’s more like you’re in a classic car from the 60s that looks like it’s from the future.
Correct!
Atleast a 6
Maybe if mazda finally decides to do a retrofit of Apple Carplay/Android Auto instead of only catering to their new SUVs and sedans, the score would be higher?
SPOILERSSSSS!!!!
LordTyroxx every mazda having the mazda connect system installed can be upgraded to apple carplay/ android auto ^^
So its not exclusive to their latest models
Bought one a few months ago and it's changed my life... my wife and I have been having an amazing time going on weekly drives. There's simply no better car to drive with the top down to go through the canyons - living in southern California is a huge plus.
Doug, you missed a big “quirks and features“ item under the hood. The MX5 has something practically no other car has, a tube that goes from the intake manifold, across the top of the engine and into the cab. It’s purpose? To transmit engine sound to the driver.
doug the type of guy to think moveable cup holders are genius
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
it actualy is
It kind of is genius...
its ingenious
Genius until you lose them and now you have no cupholders.. 🤷🏾♂️
This Miata's glovebox is designed for you to get shot by the cop when you get your registration
Not if you're European. :D
Not if you are Australian :D
But, BUT AMERICA is the greatest country on earth! How do I know? Just ask us.
@Dave Yates Racist! How dare you say it's a white man's car! Insensitive racist bigot! Probably privileged too, trust fund racist bigot! Oh wait my bad, that's a leftist thing. Haha good one my bro 😂😂😂👍
I don't/can't imagine a black guy driving this 😂
I just bought an NC. 2005. Considered the ND. The one I bought had a head unit for added technology which was good. But my considerations were me being comfortable in the car ( I'm 6 foot). Let's just say there's more space in the NC. And I love the compartments it has. And I think the shape is more of a classic, rather than curvy futuristic style. And I do love the soft top because it's just so simple. The engine in the ND is what I'd love to have. And the tech. But having said all that, regardless of which MX5 you own...they are, as Doug said ....FUN !!! :)
Now this is how you do a review....Great Job....I'm looking to get a new car and this was one of my considerations....got lots of quality info here :)
Doug the type of guy to review a sports car and the only thing he mentions about the motor is the fact it doesn't have a cover.....
The Pontiac Fiero of the '80's also had speakers in the headrest. They were ahead of their time. lol
Capt. Irk the miata in ‘89 had it too
It's almost like trends and innovations are repeating themselves in a different order, i think they're running out of things, or waiting for old fuckers to die so no one can say anything about it.
So did the 1st gen MX5... Doug has a habit of making something sound significant which isn't.
So did some models of the NA MX-5, mine does. It isn't a new thing at all.
a-head
You missed the most interesting quirk about navigation: the cues for it play only from the driver's side left speaker so it won't annoy the passenger and the passenger can still hear the music at the same volume.
I have an MX5 and absolutely love it. It is so dependable and fun to drive.
I think the air vent in the middle along with the tiny "afterthought" one is like that because it resembles the Miata's taillight
it's also useful because it's the easiest one to attach a air vent phone mount to
Not sure if you missed it, or didn't feel it was worth mentioning, but there's another little quirk about the trunk. But first, a story of how I discovered it. We had some time before a meeting at work, so I was just outside the building with a friend showing off my latest drone. Time came for the meeting to start, so I threw the drone in the trunk, shut the trunk, and as I did, realized I had tossed the key fob in the trunk as well! With the doors locked, I was SOL! I called Mazda roadside and gave them my location, type of vehicle, and let them know I locked the keys in the trunk. An hour later, a service vehicle shows up, and the first thing he says upon seeing that it's a Miata is "I hope you didn't lock the keys in the trunk!" Well, actually... He informs me that once he jimmys open the door, the alarm will render the trunk button inoperable, and since there's no pass-through between the cabin and the trunk, your keys would remain locked in the trunk.
I called Mazda roadside back, again, MAZDA roadside, they should have known this, right? Anyway, they said if the guy can't access the trunk, my options are to either have the car towed to the dealer, or they could call a locksmith out to replace the locks. Having a spare key back at home, I opted for neither of those. I had only had my Miata for a couple months at this point, and suddenly I remembered something I had glanced over in the manual. I went to the back of the car, and, located under the lip, over the license plate, and off-set to the right, is a little hidden button for opening the trunk. Since the key fob was in the trunk, it was close enough to allow the button to still operate (in fact, they make it so it's impossible to lock the keyfob in the car, I would later realize). I pressed the button, the trunk opened, I grabbed my keys, and called MAZDA roadside back to thank them for wasting two hours of my life. lolz.
I had no idea anyone didn't know that button was there. I don't think I have once opened the trunk with anything other than that button.
@@zetto156 yea this is a bit weird, never used a key fob to open any trunk I've had haha
The Mustang has the same hidden feature.
wow, I've always opened the truck with that button or the one in the cabin, hardly ever with the fob. Well, atleast now you know.
Incredibly long story. You could have summed it up with one sentence.
I'm definitely one of those dozen people who love the two dots as wheels on the key fob
No more. Now the key is cell-phone sized.
I had first gen miata, drove it for 21 years in Cleveland Ohio, I got a second set of wheels (steel) for winter and I put Blistex winter tires on them. I know it sounds like I'm exagerating, but I swear, we drove that car in snow depths that you might not even in a 4 wheel drive. This Miata went everywhere and never got stuck. NEVER. Come spring, change the wheels and you were good to go for the rest of the year. So fun at a light when the car next to me would slip and slide, and I could just power away. A GREAT year 'round car. Only thing wrong was the salt in Cleveland winters eventually took it's toll, and the rocker area and wheel wells mostly went away. Still, I sold it for $5000. as is and the guy was happy to get it.
Nothing gets me more excited when even Doug says there's a tiny quirk that no one will care about. That's when you know it's gonna be good.
Not kidding, the cupholders and those bumps on the key fob would be the deciding factor in me pulling the trigger on it. I love little things like that and they'd make me smile every time I drove it.
Yeah, the second and more sensitive coolant temp gauge readout was missed by everyone but Doug. Its presence is proof that Mazda engineers are motorhead FANATICS!
The stop sign/speed limit sign recognition makes this the perfect car for Bird Box.
So true
well, speed limits really don't matter anymore in birdbox, so.....
My 2011 3 has the turn signal volume setting, and I love it. It's almost silent on low. I've always thought turn signal noises were annoying and unnecessary when there's a bright flashing arrow on the gauge. Glad to see they stuck with it, but it feels like the low is too loud. I'm sure at highway speeds, it's much quieter though. I'm saving up for this car for when I have enough cash or earn enough income to comfortably finance the remainder over 36 months. As a single lady with no kids, it's a dream.
i have the same car (2009) with same feature. but have you noticed that a 2019 car and 2009-2013 car has the same turn signal sound?
Making turn signals louder is a great idea!! I never ever notice turn signals in my VW when the radio is on what's worse, the steering wheel perfectly covers the indicatios so I did happen to be driving around with hazard lights on for a while befor I noticed they were on...
Also convertibles are loud. Obviously with the top down, but even with the top up it has wind noise making it louder than a normal car.
The Mazda MX5 doesn't need anymore power from standard, Its got enough. The car isn't designed to be fast, it's supposed to be the best handling car ever made and that's why it's so light weight.
What the Miata needs most at this juncture is seat height adjustment. At 6.1" I could use it.
@@sonicliberation fr, I'm 6'3 and I currently own an 86. Wish the miata is as roomy
I mean, it's still decently fast. 0-100 in 6 seconds is all that most people will need..
yes it foken does, for the same money u can buy type r in UK, more space more power and safer and for handling? ill get a lotus, this car is a huge fiasco, because the lack of power i will get a 370z sport.
@@azteka6103 what? Civic type r for the same money? lol
The car looks so sick with the roof up! Definitely one of the best looking convertibles out there.
I love that you can turn off the trunk light! When I'm working on my car and I leave the trunk open I hate that it stays on!
I was floored at how well a new MX-5 handles like it's on rails on the Autobahn at 135 MPH with a relatively short wheelbase.
