I'm 26 and finally bought a brand new Miata in late June as my first big boy purchase post-college and finding a career. You don't see very many NDs where I live, so a lot of people break their necks to look at it and give me compliments at work. Other Miata and even Porsche drivers also wave at me a lot which is cool.

I dismissed his pleadings as it was clear the car simply wasn't fast enough, powerful enough or big enough to be serious fun. It didn't matter that he'd owned both an NA and NB Miata. Put the one cupholder in the passenger knee spot and store the other one in the cubby behind the passenger seat. Then you have elbow room for the controller dial, and your drink is right at hand.

Oh what a small world. At 6:46 you did a u-turn at Loop 360 and West Courtyard Drive which is steps away from the office building where i work. Although Austin is steamy hot in July, the pandemic has magically made our terrible traffic congestion disappear. If you were here a year ago in that Miata you would have been in bumper-to-bumper traffic the entire time and hated it.
Great vid and one of my all time favorite cars. You need to come out to the Hill country to enjoy the Miata. I live in that area, and am happy to get you to some great roads and pretty area for video reviews if you come out this way again. Cheers!
Hey Tim, I have a 2021 Soul Red Crystal RF Club with the Recaro package en route from Oregon. Found it online with only 1400 miles. As for your comment about the Hill Country, please share a couple of your favorite roads with me. I live south of San Antonio and the Hill Country is only a 2 hour drive for me. Can't wait for the car to arrive.
I would love the MX5 with new Skyactive X 2.0 with minor refresh of interior esp thicker steering wheel. Some more softer material and LED styled rear light cluster. Dont touch the front its perfect as it is. I had mx5 ND for 2 year 1.5 litre in europe. Took it for european trip UK france Italy Austria Germany Belgium France Back to UK. Just me and my skies 😂🤣😂🤣
I have an RF GT 2018 -the reason you cannot touch the screen while driving is so you are not distracted, very good design. Wanna change songs, use Siri.
Its always been a nice little fun car for one or two people, the front end kind of looks like a Mazda 3 now and Yes I miss it when it had Pop out front headlights too.
Want more turns, Micah? Didn't anyone point you toward the Texas Hill Country that begins just beyond west of Austin and includes some of America's greatest roads? Aim toward Lake LBJ for skinny dipping. Turn south and on to Luckenbach for BBQ. I lived in Austin for years and still miss those roads even in comparison to great roads here in the Pacific Northwest. The good news? There are very, very few iconic vehicles in automotive history. My personal list includes the 1940 Ford Coupe, the Austin Healey 3000, the Jaguar E-type, the '55 Chevy V8, the Porsche 911, and the Miata, a modern (and better) reincarnation of the classic British sports car. There are other vehicles on my list but I suspect many would agree the Miata deserves to be on it. The Miata isn't perfect, of course. But even the weaknesses and compromises are signs of character. The RF version has some wind noise issues. Live with it if you must have a hard top or get the even more iconic soft top. Big Mac loving Americans don't fit very well. Stop patronizing McDonald's and live longer. If you're too tall consider surgery. Ridiculous cup holders . Don't drink and drive. Almost no storage space. Live a minimalist life style. Can't drive an MT? Learn! The AT is a sacrilege. It needs a bigger engine and/or a turbo. No, it doesn't. The bad news? Mazda is the smallest independent mainstream automaker on the planet and with the exception of the CX-5 (65,000 sold in the first half of 2020) the sales of its entire vehicle lineup are dismal and unlikely to improve significantly in the current and near future economic climate. The CX-9 is the worst selling midsize 3 row crossover in the US and not by a small margin. (13,450 sales vs the next lowest selling Atlas at 25,000) The Mazda6 is an attractive midsize sedan in a shrinking segment but its sales (8100) are worse than any mainstream rival. Even VW sold over 10,000 Passats. The new Mazda3's sales (sedan and hatch) are terrible as well. Down 43% in 2020 compared to the first half of 2019 to slightly over 16,000 units. No expects the Mazda3 to challenge the Corolla or the Civic but the Jetta and the KIA Forte outsold the Mazda3 by well over 2 to 1 in the first half of 2020. The newly released CX-30 ranked 24th among compact crossover sales with 17,000 units sold in the first half of 2020 but even that performance is based in part on cannibalizing the sales of the CX-3 (down to 4757 sales for 2020.) In the midst of all the carnage there's a bit of good news from the Miata. Its sales are actually up 10% in the first half of 2020 compared to 2019. But a total of 4320 Miata sales isn't going to provide significant help for Mazda. It's a niche vehicle that was saved from extinction by FCA's investment for Mazda to build the Fiat 124 Spyder sibling. And if sales of the 124 are a guide, FCA is unlikely to repeat that assistance (A total of 969 124's were sold in the US in the first half of 2020 but even that's better than the 25, yes 25, sales in Europe.) It may well be, in fact, that some Miata customers see the writing on the wall and want to buy one before such a great automobile disappears, altogether. I truly hope the Miata survives and that Mazda doesn't lose its status as an independent manufacturer to become a subsidiary to, say, Toyota but I'm pessimistic. Bottom line. If you want a Miata, buy one now.
Thanks for the review. Tested the 1.5 RF and loved the way it drove and the smooth comfortable ride but it lacked power, so ordered the 2.0 RF GT without a test drive as none available. Only had it a few days but really disappointed in the ride quality, much firmer and harsher than the 1.5., really uncomfortable but none of the reviews I've seen mention it. Is this due to larger wheels and Bilsteins or is there a problem with my car?
Great car but I just couldn't live with the giant blacked out side "windows" in the rear buttresses. The previous Mazda 5 hardtop convertible was still a convertible albeit a bit odd looking.
I wish Mazda would offer it in more vibrant colors. I don’t like any of its current colors, including the red you’re in. I think they’re all boring IMO. The limited edition orange was nice but it sold out quickly. Something like Honda’s Boost Blue or Toyota’s Voodoo Blue, British Racing Green, traditional red, yellow etc.
I have a 2020 miata. That touchscreen thing is REALLY irritating, it’s very nearly enough to push me into something like an EcoBoost Mustang. The key is also unnecessarily large and has tiny buttons. I wish the control knob was further forward next to the USB ports and there could be a bigger phone holder where the knob is. Small complaints, though, when you get to have something as fun as this.
Thanks for weighing in! I always love hearing from actual owners. It can be hard to tell whether short term annoyances get better or worse with time. Where Miata is concerned, now I know!
Micah Muzio These things are important! Bad ergonomics can really grind your gears after a while. The touchscreen thing is baffling, but it’s probably not as annoying in other Mazdas that put the screen further away from you, so you’d default to the knob. I’ve never owned another Mazda, so I wouldn’t know. I’m glad the new Mazdas seem to have bigger screens and different interfaces too.
William Mackay you’re kidding right? An Ecoboost Mustang is not the same driving experience at all, nice car in it’s own right, but vastly different dynamics
As a former Austin area resident for 25+ years I hope you had some good Texas Bar-B-Que. Oh, the bats are more impressive in Round Rock up I35 North from Austin.
@Micah Muzio since you owned an s2000, do you think its a good replacement? I had a s2000 CR, but regrettably sold it. I'm thinking of a getting a ragtop miata now. What do you think?
It depends on your expectations. The S2000 was so elemental and singularly focused, it's hard to find a direct replacement. But the Miata hits a lot of the same emotional notes. If I were looking to recapture that S2000 magic I'd probably buy a Miata, enjoy it as-is, then when the warranty expires bolt on a supercharger.
I love the look of the RF. But, I can see why the traditional convertible would have more of an open air experience. I would love to hear which one you would choose and why. Oh, and which one does your wife prefer? :)
Love this car. I do wish they would give you a LSD option on every trim level. Also if the very roof was 2 inches taller in the fat top so I could fit in one. I would personally take the ND V2 over an S2000 it is that much fun.
Only the people who haven’t spent much time in a current Mazda think that the console control knobs are bad. That is totally wrong. Mazda engineers are on to something. It is a much easier, faster and safer way to navigate thru the display. Way way way safer. Mazda don’t ever get rid of console controls. I drive a 17 Mazda3 and I love the controls
Hey Micah, “Micah Muzio” is your channel right? You keep asking people to subscribe to “Micah Drives” and “Micah Flies” so I’m confused if there’s more channels than just this
Blasphemy, yes...but necessary in this market and lets those with leg/body limitations enjoy the car. If autos improve sales, great. Ppl who want a manual will buy one. Ppl who don't want to shift can still enjoy the fun.
@Ryuichi Tanaka I said it would be nice with a Turbo option for those that want the throw-you-back-in-your-seat feeling that turbocharged engines bring. I'm not saying it needs more power and by all means I never mentioned it needed more power. But its lightweight and chassis excellence would be even more fun if they added a turbo that made around the same to 200hp.
@Ryuichi Tanaka I don't consider it that way. See I'm among the few that think naturally aspirated engines need to go. I love the feel of a turbo engine. Not only that, but it's good fuel economy (on most cars). I got a 2016 Hyundai Tucson with a 1.6 turbo, and it's very stout and quick for only 175 horsepower, but I can get anywhere between 29-31 MPG on a 170-mile trip going home from my college. Bare in mind, I'm supposed to average 28 on the highway. I mean yes, some N/A engines are good, but turbos are starting to really prove themselves worthy.
@Ryuichi Tanaka For instance, take a look at Honda. They used to offer a 2.4L I4 and a 3.5L V6 for the Accord. Now, it's a 1.5T and 2.0T. I've driven the 2.0T with the 10-speed auto, and I absolutely loved that powertrain. Nothing will ever beat the charismatic sound of the VTEC roaring from that V6, but the 2.0T personally makes up for it with the power it puts down, and returns better fuel economy. I'm not saying Mazda should just drop the 2.0L engine, they should keep it, and for some that want a little more fun, throw in a turbo. Heck, make a Miataspeed variant with that 2.5L turbo! That I would be dying to do a review on!!!!!
Why does every car need to be have upgraded infotainment , we come to the point where cars only had radios , now fucking spoil generations bitch about having the latest infotainment. "Upgrade to the automatic"? Wrong. That's an absolute _downgrade._ In fact, if you're considering getting a Miata with an automatic you need to reevaluate your entire life. Or just get another car.

They are excellent sporty cars, very very reliable!
As a former Austin area resident for 25+ years I hope you had some good Texas Bar-B-Que.
Oh, the bats are more impressive in Round Rock up I35 North from Austin.
I can confirm. Austin's BBQ game is strong!
Micah Muzio I love your car reviews. 👏. When you did your Chevy SS review I bought one after missing out on the Pontiac G8.
As a Honda S2000 enthusiast, seeing this ND miata and the lack of a modern 2020 S2000 to stand against it and the Porsche Boxster is disheartening.
Honda is the H&K of the car world. They make great stuff, but refuse to sell you what you really want.
I love the look of the RF. But, I can see why the traditional convertible would have more of an open air experience. I would love to hear which one you would choose and why. Oh, and which one does your wife prefer? :)
I prefer the open top experience.
I'm hoping to buy one ,and if I ever come across extra money I would wrap it in a purple color
Trade you my 1999 NB with Dual Cats??? Yes, and Amen! & Truth Be Tellin!
I just wish the leather was a slightly darker tan.
Mazda seriously needs to put the new cx3,mazda3 motor in the Miata. 250hp and 320 torque. It would be a Rocket!!!
Omg that beard daddy 🔥. Miata is 🔥too 😊
Love this car. I do wish they would give you a LSD option on every trim level. Also if the very roof was 2 inches taller in the fat top so I could fit in one. I would personally take the ND V2 over an S2000 it is that much fun.
$1.839 for a gallon of Regular? Jeebus, that's cheap.
Welcome to Texas :)
Texas, aka "fuck the environment".
@@sanchopanz1476 And same to California Sancho!
@@sanchopanz1476 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 keep paying $5 in commie cali
@@speterbilt Its like $3 not 5
Only the people who haven’t spent much time in a current Mazda think that the console control knobs are bad. That is totally wrong. Mazda engineers are on to something. It is a much easier, faster and safer way to navigate thru the display. Way way way safer. Mazda don’t ever get rid of console controls. I drive a 17 Mazda3 and I love the controls
Whoa, it has a 2.4L motor? Thime index 0.25s.
I'm getting it in automatic with the soft top.
Is that a Miata or a DelSol or a Supra? I'm confused
It's a 2liter engine and not 2.4L as you listed on your video.
The convertble miata will be my next car...
Did I read that gas station sign right?!? ITS LIKE $3 PER GALLON WHERE I'M FROM!! 😡🤬
Even lower than that in Houston. Oil industry is hurting bad right now. Talk to your politicians about that excessive gas tax...
So if you ever wanted to drive a go-cart on the street legally here’s your chance.
Nice niche auto, especially where size is a concern. Ok, now review the C8 Corvette.
Decent ride. Great vid.
Hey Micah, “Micah Muzio” is your channel right? You keep asking people to subscribe to “Micah Drives” and “Micah Flies” so I’m confused if there’s more channels than just this
Why the hell would you travel to Austin TX (an excellent city) right now? 🤔😲
Hello! How tall are you?
5' 10"
How long are your legs? I have short legs but long torso..6’2’’
You should be fine because of the short legs
That car absolutely suit you, Micah. Maybe it could be a "date night" car?
Automatic Miata?!?! Blasphemy!
An automatic MX-5 IS acceptable.... if the driver's left leg is amputated, paralyzed or otherwise inoperable.
Blasphemy, yes...but necessary in this market and lets those with leg/body limitations enjoy the car. If autos improve sales, great. Ppl who want a manual will buy one. Ppl who don't want to shift can still enjoy the fun.
I think a turbo would be nice in a Miata... punchy and quick. Would reduce some weight even more maybe...
@Ryuichi Tanaka or Mazda could just take that turbo engine and make it an option... I see more "FIAT-as" than Miatas here in my area.
Soul red is their greatest color and their worst color all in one. Looks great when clean, but chips so dang easy (ask me how I know).
Great roadster, I prefer the ragtop however.
It just looks terrible with that folding hardtop, the proportions are all off
Man that Mazda infotainment system has looked outdated ever since it was first introduced.
Why does every car need to be have upgraded infotainment , we come to the point where cars only had radios , now fucking spoil generations bitch about having the latest infotainment. Apple carplay and Android auto is enough , for a car , there's no need for a fucking iPad size screen when one should be driving not playing with their screens 🤦♂️ I hope this planets causes earthquakes and hurricane's , this world population has gotten to entitled
@Ryuichi Tanaka Mazda uses that system for all their vehicles, not just sports cars.
Mysterious White Van™ was excited about the title but left disappointed. Remarks: how is the Miata's a/c performance in 104° heat?
You can tell Muzio was hot by the noise of the A/C.
True!! I can’t hang with that Texas humidity.
More MX5 videos !
"Upgrade to the automatic"?
Wrong. That's an absolute _downgrade._
In fact, if you're considering getting a Miata with an automatic you need to reevaluate your entire life. Or just get another car.
You really fixated on that one sentence, and gloss over all his others about the manual?
@@ALMX5DP
Yup.
That one sentence with both 'upgrade' and 'automatic' is an oxymoron with Miata.
Get the AT. Trust me.
@@benedictdonald4338
Get yourself a psych eval. Trust me.
Got a follow car eh? Budgets going up I see.
That Ferrari has probably appeared on the Normal Guy Supercar channel a time or two.
Automatic trans on a Miata is not an upgrade.
