ND Owner here too. The supercharger like whine you hear is actually just 3rd gear. My Motorcycle makes the same sound in second and third. It's because 3rd is a straight cut gear.
Ive just past the first year of ownership, of my Sep 7th 2021 MX5 MD2 Sports Venture. Its been the perfect transport, totally reliable, nothing has gone wrong, no lights on the dashboard, oil level stays rock steady on the dipstick, and strangely enough, the tyres have not deviated one little bit in pressure. I check the pressure every week, and its always reading 2 Bar, no fluctuations due to the change in outside temperature. I know Mazda MX5s are supposed to be reliable little things, but my car, with 4285 miles from new, is reliability personified.
Hello from Scotland. Great review. We've not had ours long but you're right it's a superb ownership experience. You do meet some lovely people. Stay Safe.
The red RF ND is one of the most beautiful cars.. I would buy an ND2 soft top for the power price as well as slightly better performance because that's just what I prefer. And lol I definitely agree with you about push start ignitions, I WANT TO TWIST IT! It's so unsatisfying pressing the button instead of all that tactile interaction you get with a normal key.
Planning on getting the ND in a couple years as my retirement present. But can only afford a used one, though. The one thing that caught my attention the most in your review is that you actually drove it off road. Although it wasn't in extreme off road conditions, it was still impressive for quite a low slung sports car. Not that I'll be going off roading with it but as a person who loves the outdoors, there'll definitely be occasions where I'll have to get off the asphalt to be where I want to be at. Enjoyed your video. Keep up the good work!
Hi KSS Rider, Thanks for your kind words. A used one is a wise option, let the previous owner take the depreciation hit Hopefully you will come across an example that's up to your liking 😀
@@TheCWO Yes, hoping to come across a good find when the time comes. Not easy as MX5s are pretty rare here in KL. Worse case scenario, I'll have to get a recon unit, which means paying a bit more. But the biggest obstacle would be the missus. She will kill the idea immediately if she knows about this dream of mine. 😄
2:32 I think that's because the car turns off the power steering motor when not turning, and requires a little effort to activate it. My 2 does the same.
Nicely done review...evidently the auto locking feature was dropped after 2018, because my RF Club with BBS Package had the auto locking feature where my 2021 does not. Enjoy your car...I do mine!
I really am considering this roadster over a boxster because of its reliability and fun factor but I’m 6’4” and don’t wanna feel like a giraffe sitting in a bathtub. I’ll be going to a dealer to try one on. Cheers😎🤘🏼
Hahaha.. I like that giraffe in a bathtub analogy 🤣 Try both the Boxster and the roadster out to be sure on which speaks to you more. I do get your concern as a Cayman I once had costs quite a bit once it hit 6 years of age (30000 kilometres on the clock).
At 6ft 4 i recon you might struggle getting comfortable inside an MX5 Im 5ft 11, and im borderline comfortable, just enough leg space, but only just. Anyone north of 6ft 2 will not find a comfortable seating position.
Nice and honest vid! My dad used to own an NA decades ago, I only drove it myself a few times but it somehow stuck with me. Today I drove a demo-ND at a Mazda-dealer; softtop, 1.5. Great little car, an issue that I haven't seen mentioned before though is that I seem to constantly push on the rotating menu-button with my right arm (LHD here). I found the ride-quality quite stiff as well, even though I currently drive a BMW 1-series with an M-package. I need to save up a bit more (even for a used one - cars are expensive here), we'll see what next spring brings me!
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your insights 😆 I'm surprised by the 1.5 riding stiffer than a 1 series with M sports 😮 Anyways, look forward to seeing you in an ND in the coming spring!
Hmm... I have a 19' RF and my adaptive lights swivel individually with my steering wheel angle. The right one turns right and the left turns left. Is this what you meant?
I have the same now for almost 2,5 years with 32000 km on it. It is true that the exhaust sound gets better and better but for me the greatest annoyance is the fact that you are not able to keep a phone call or music running when you stop the engine. I cannot understand how Mazda can built sth. like this. If you want to keep on speaking on your phone you have to keep the engine running. Other brands cut the power when you open the doors. Besides that I love this car and I drive it everyday of the week.
@@TheCWO Hello. You can do that to start the power (electricity) without the engine but not the other way around. This means you can listen to music and have a phone call before you start and without the engine running but you cannot stop the engine (by pushing the button once) without loosing electricity and by that means your phone call. There is a solution in the aftermarket to that problem but still I do not understand Mazda's thinking in this matter.
I think I would love to get one for the wife and I to cruise around in. However, we do have 4 kids and if I wanted to take 2 of them to dance class or baseball or to school then I would not be able to. Yes, we have a minivan and I have a truck but it would be fun to be able to take a few of the kids with us at times. It is for this reason that I am thinking that I will wait to see the 2022 86 and BRZ. Sure, no convertible but still fun to drive cars. I have thought about the Mustang and Camaro but have just never really liked those 2.
More than that - some of the other cars you could compare to the Miata are hundreds of pounds heavier. Weight is the enemy of fun. Have a more substantial sounding door closure and you’re looking at a 2,700lb Miata…..which will be slower and less playful
I know what you mean. My 2016 Scion FRS was just totaled. I am still in shock and very bummed. I drove that car year round with snow tires, and had a blaster, even in snow. Just brought home a 2018 Miata RF Touring. Planning to put snow tires on and waiting patiently for Spring when I can have the top down. Have fun picking your ride. I’m 70, need to find a solution for the golf cart and clubs.

On the ND2, both sensor and camera.
